We may think that the Holy Family had no real problems or struggles. A er all, Jesus was the perfect son, never unruly, nor disobedient, not spoiled like so many children of our day. Mary ran a perfect home, always neat, clean and dy, no ma er what was going on or who might visit. Joseph came in from his shop a er a busy day to find a peaceful se ng with no worries or cares. But all of this is so far from their real life. The Holy Family was subjected to all the stress, tension and anxiety that are common in any family today. However, in that home where there was a great deal of love, Jesus grew in grace, age and wisdom.

Today’s readings speak of family values and responsibili es. Fathers and mothers are reminded of their responsibili es to their children; children to their parents, husbands and wives to each other. Our families are the basic unit of our Church, our society and our world. If our families are faith-filled, strong and healthy, sharing care, concern and love, so will be the world in which we live. If families have lost their way, then we can expect more of the same vicious cycle that our modern society suffers and experiences. There must be a return to the ideals of family life, where love, discipline, kindness and order reign supreme if we are to find the happiness and peace we so desperately long for. A family is the place where love can truly happen.

To live together demands a great deal of giving in and sacrifice. St. Paul tells us what we are to do if we are to live well together. He says: Clothe yourselves in mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, pa ence and forgiveness.

Above all we must love one another, which is not just a ma er of words but also of deeds. These essen al family virtues don’t happen overnight. We have to work at them every day. Families are to spend me together sharing all their hopes and dreams. Parents are to listen and not just nag their children. Children are to be respec ul and obedient. And above all, they are to worship and pray together. The family is to be the source of healing and forgiveness for one another. If we do not find forgiveness there, where shall we ever experience it?

Your family is more than just a family. Your home is more than a place where you live. Children are a gi from God and parents are to teach them how to love and live life properly. Your family is to be a sign of God’s saving work for all of His people.

May your family grow in grace, age and wisdom every day of this New Year.

ANSWER: Each year, on the first of January, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. But, what are the origins and meaning of this solemnity?

Looking back in me, we find that prior to the liturgical reforms made a er the Second Va can Council, the first of January was occupied by the Feast of Circumcision of Jesus. Following the Jewish custom, Jesus was taken to the temple on the eighth day a er his birth to be circumcised and to receive his name (Lk 2:22). Following the ancient manor of calcula ng

me, the first of January is the eighth day a er the feast of the birth of Christ, Christmas.

With the revision of the liturgy, we now modify the focus of the celebra on: “1 January, the Octave Day of the Na vity of the Lord, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, and also the commemora on of the conferral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.” In 1974, Pope Paul VI explained the nature of the celebra on: “This celebra on, placed on January 1 ...is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salva on. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the ‘holy Mother...through whom we were found worthy to receive the Author of life.’ It is likewise a fi ng occasion for renewing adora on of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad dings of the angels (cf. Lk. 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gi of peace” (Marialis Cultus, num. 5).

We usually celebrate the important feasts in the Church for eight days, hence the Octave of Easter or the Octave of Christmas. It is certainly fi ng that on the final day of Christmas, we stop and give God thanks for the sacrificial “yes” that Mary made, which allowed God to become incarnate. When we each make our daily sacrificial “yes”, we also allow God to enter in to the world.

QUESTION: What is the significance of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God?
