A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKMrs Helen FInlayIt has been an action packed couple of weeks at the College to finish off a very busy term indeed.

Firstly congratulations to the graduating class of 2017. Mrs Cairelli interrupted her honeymoon especially to be part of the celebrations and to wish this wonderful group of young people well as they prepare for their Higher School Certificate. Winnie the Pooh even made a special guest appearance and left them with the quote:

Mrs Cairelli told me she prayed very hard about what words wisdom to impart to Year 12 in her final formal address to them. Unbeknown to each other both the girls School Captain Kathryn and Mrs Cairelli both shared the same Bible verse from Joshua 1:9.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God

will be with you wherever you go.”

Last Saturday God blessed us with clear blue skies and balmy temperatures for our second ever Spring Fair. Our heartfelt appreciation must go out to the countless hours our teachers and volunteers put in to make this Spring Fair an enormous success. As many of you may be aware the proceeds of this event will be going towards building a new school playground. Thanks to the nearly $12,900 raised by the Spring Fair we are now a very healthy $44, 386 towards our $92,000 goal! A further $1000 was raised by students on the day before Spring Fair in a coin trail which meant Mrs Kelly (it was the day before she became Mrs Cairelli) had to make good on her promise of attending the Fair in her wedding dress!

A number of us were privileged to witness Mrs Kelly wear another wedding dress the following day as she said her vows before God and became Mrs Cairelli at Liberty Church Gosford.

If you were watching the Today Show on Tuesday bright and early you may have heard our wonderful College mentioned with a picture of our teachers wearing their underwear on the outside on the screen. It was all for a very good cause. I am excited to announce that we were one of the five winners, each announced daily, of the Win $5000 For Your School Captain Underpants Competition! Thank you to the staff who were willing to leave their dignity at the door and be such good sports, all in the name of building a better school for our wonderful students.

It was exciting to see so many people join us for our second Spring Fair and it was bigger and better than last year. Once again God blessed us with favourable weather so that every-one could enjoy the day. The petting zoo and reptiles were a big hit, the amusement rides managed to help burn off all the fairy floss and lollies. The food kept everyone refuelled and the atmosphere of community was exciting to be a part of as lots of people involved themselves in the various activities. The funds raised from the Fair all go to help build the Junior School playground and I am very pleased to announce that we have made approximately $12,900 which is a fantastic result.

There are so many people to thank as it is a huge task to or-ganise a Spring Fair. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped us on the day – whether it was cooking on the BBQ or assisting on a stall and everything in between, your support and assistance was very much appreciated.

Thank you to the SPCC teachers who have worked hard in preparing the students for the Fair by coming up with a great variety of stalls. Thank you also to the SPCC administration

staff who worked so well behind the scenes to make the event run smoothly, both in the lead up to the event and on the day. Thank you to all the families who came along and enjoyed the day to create such a positive atmosphere.

Thank you also to all our sponsors that help contribute to our day, whether it be through sponsorship funds or through donations to our chocolate wheel.

A very special thank you must go to the committee: Hilda Van Hoving, Tracey Hawkins, Penelope Waugh, Ainslie Quilty, Tina Van Gestel, Emma Thompson, Mark Worrard, Michele Stewart. There were numerous hours spent meeting, prepar-ing for meetings, setting up and packing down. Without this team the Fair would definitely not have happened. My thanks also to their respective families for their sacrifice in allowing them to attend the meetings, and then for the extended fam-ily members who all helped set up and pack up – children and husbands alike. It was a huge effort and I was very thankful to work with such a great committee. Thank you for all your hard work and support.

Mr Cameron Johnston

A SPRING FAIR THANK YOU!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL CHAPLAINMr Geoff BrownTo Our Graduates,

You’re probably receiving a lot of advice. But before you set off down the winding road before you, here are a few travel notes from my own journey. They may help you navigate what lies ahead.

This road of life you’re gazing down is a road to life, but only if you follow The Way . The road is going to get very hard at times. Other roads will look very appealing to you when you are weary, discouraged, confused, angry, tempted by some desire, or grieving. They will appear much easier. Beware. The path of least resistance is the path of least reward. Jesus goes much further.

“For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7

Know the Book. Do not neglect the Book. Store the Book in your heart. Daily Bible reading has nothing to do with your performing a ritual for God’s approval, but has everything to do with your spiritual survival. The Book will keep you sane, because the Book tells you what’s real. What you perceive with your senses, how you interpret your perceptions, and how your emotions respond are unreliable indicators of reality. They will frequently not tell you the truth. And when they do, their reports will often be faulty because they are based on a very thin slice of reality. They can’t tell you the big picture. You need to know what God says is true and stand there.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths”. Proverbs 3

Many, many times it will look to you like God’s promises are not real or will not come true. At those moments - I can’t stress this enough - don’t trust your perceptions. I have learned this lesson over the past 30 years in many different, and at times severe, ways. I tell you the truth: Not once have God’s promises failed me, but my perceptions have failed me again and again. So, live in the Book and it will help you live.

Ask God for everything. When praying for your own heart, don’t be afraid to pray, “whatever it takes.” God loves those kinds of prayers. He takes them seriously and answers them. You will not always recognize the answers initially, because they will come in ways you don’t expect. And they will often be harder than you expect.

“And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Luke 11

Always remember, Jesus wants you to be you. He doesn’t want you to be anyone else. You bear God’s image in a unique way. You have a unique calling on your life.

You will be tempted all along the way to compare yourself with others. Sometimes you will feel the pride of superiority; sometimes you will feel the pride of inferiority. In all your comparisons, Jesus’s word to you will be, “What is that to you? You follow me.”

At the end of your journey, the status and achievements the world most admires will mean nothing. All that will matter is whether or not you faithfully stewarded what Jesus entrusted to you.

May God keep you and bless you all the days of your lives.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLMrs Helen FinlayTeDDY BeArS’ PiCniCWhat a lovely time was had by our Kindergarten children, their Year 4 buddies and families at our annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. We were blessed with beautiful weather and it was so lovely to have precious time to spend together.

HelP PrevenT BOreDOM in SCHOOlI recently read an excellent article regarding how parents can help “Train the Brain” so that their child successfully func-tion on social, emotional, and academic levels. The following tips were suggested:

1. Limit technology, and re-connect with your kids emo-tionally • Have family dinners, board game nights (see the list of my favorite board games), go biking, go to outdoor walks with a flashlight in the evening2. Train delayed gratification • Make them wait!!! It is ok to have “I am bored“ time – this is the first step to creativity • Gradually increase the waiting time between “I want” and “I get” • Avoid technology use in cars and restaurants, and instead teach them waiting while talking and playing games3. Don’t be afraid to set the limits. Kids need limits to grow happy and healthy!! • Make a schedule for meal times, sleep times, technolo gy time

• Think of what is GOOD for them- not what they WANT / DON’T WANT. They are going to thank you for that later on in life. Parenting is a hard job. You need to be creative to make them do what is good for them because, most of the time, that is the exact opposite of what they want. • Kids need breakfast and nutritious food. They need to spend time outdoor and go to bed at a consistent time in order to come to school available for learning the next day! • Convert things that they don’t like doing/trying into fun, emotionally stimulating games4. Teach your child to do monotonous work from early years as it is the foundation for future “workability” • Folding laundry, tidying up toys, hanging clothes, un packing groceries, setting the table, making lunch, un packing their lunch box, making their bed • Be creative. Initially make it stimulating and fun so that their brain associates it with something positive.5. Teach social skills • Teach them turn taking, sharing, losing/winning, com promising, complimenting others , using “please and thank you”

The passage that comes to mind when I read through this list hails from Proverbs 22:6.

“Train up a child in the way he should go,And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

We made it!! As we come to the end of another busy yet productive term, we can reflect on and congratulate some of the achievements of our Middle School students. HRIS Carnivals, Sporting Gala Days, the Lion King Musical, Book Week, Enrichment Showcase, Bring a Friend to School Day, Open Day and Spring Fair have all been fantastic platforms to present the gifts and talents of our students and they have all done us proud. A special thanks to the students and parents who assisted in the preparation before and on the day of the Spring Fair. We were especially blessed with phenomenal weather and a fantastic turn out from the school community.

As we enter the school holiday period and an abundance of free time, it is a reminder to parents to be vigilant with your child’s online presence when using social media and other apps on their digital devices and MacBooks.

The website angelshope.org.au provides saddening results of a survey of Middle School aged children about online bullying. Below are some of the reported statistics:

o Hurtful teasing was reported as the most common bullying behaviour, followed by lies. o Bullying is more common in Year 5 (32%) and in Year 8 (29%), with 1 in 4 children aged 8-14 being victims of online

bullying.o Bullying by females is more covert, while males are more ‘in your face’ about it.o Peers are present in 87% of bullying interactions, mostly as onlookers who do nothing to help.

Over recent weeks, it has come to our attention that some of our students are engaging in common social media trends, such as the ‘Like for a TBH or rate’, where students rate or comment on each other. Unfortunately, it can and has been used as a form of bullying, disguised either as ‘joking’ or through anonymity. There have also been instances of taking and sharing photographs or films other students, without their knowledge or consent.

Some of our College expectations and MacBook agreements for use state that students are not to:

- Access, post, store or communication information, images, video or other materials that is inappropriate or offensive to others.- Use any recording device or post any recording without the explicit permission from their classroom teacher nor record any person without their permission.- Abuse, vilify, defame, harass or discriminate.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ASSISTANT HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOLMrs Bronwyn Fahey

St Philip’s Christian College, Gosford ~ College Newsletter 11

As parents, we encourage you to be attentive to your child’s internet use on both MacBook and personal devices. You can help protect your child by:

4 Ensuring that technology with online access are used in open areas of the home.

4 Banning computers from bedrooms and other secluded areas.

4 Becoming a ‘friend’ of your child on social media sites they use.

4 Setting clear boundaries and regularly discussing online dangers.

4 Talking with your child about protecting themselves by never posting images or information that could be used to embarrass or harm them if it fell into the wrong hands, never open or reply to unsolicited emails or messages, and report bullying, harassment and inappropriate messages.

‘Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift. Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

Make a clean break with all cutting, backbiting, profane talk. Be gentle with one another, sensitive. Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.’ Ephesians 4:19-32 (Message Version)

Stage 3 have been reading and discussing picture books that focus on the theme of ‘Belonging’ this term. Through this, the students have begun to recognise and challenge stereotypes as portrayed in digital media. As part of an in-class task, students were asked to create a persuasive text to either

challenge stereotypes or promote inclusion and diversity. The students really enjoyed the challenge and created some thought-provoking posters.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOLMr Cameron Johnston

YeAr 12 FinAl DAYSThe week has belong+ed to the Year 12 as they celebrated their final days of school. Tuesday morning the Year 12 students and staff enjoyed a BBQ breakfast on the waterfront. Wednesday was their celebration day which included their final assembly and Chapel, along with a Year 12 vs Staff soccer match. The soccer match wasn’t much of a celebration for them as the staff taught them one more lesson in their 6-1 defeat of the students. Thursday was an emotional day as we farewelled the Year 12 for the last time in their graduation service and celebrated with them at their formal. The Year 12 have done very well and have provided positive leadership, camaraderie and service to the school. We will miss them and we pray for them as they work towards their Higher School Certificate and their life beyond school.

SPrinG FAir We were blessed with another amazing day of weather for the Spring Fair this year. Next year we will need to pray not only for blue sky, but less wind! My thanks and appreciation to all the Senior School staff, students and parents for their contribution to the success of the day. I know there were many cakes made by YearNine and Year Ten, and that the Year Eleven students did a great job helping on a variety of stalls, while the Year Twelve seemed to enjoy having fun on the day – especially the laser tag! Special thanks go to the children of the Van Hoving, Budge, and Worrard families who helped after hours to set up and pack up the Spring Fair so well. It was a great service to the school and very much appreciated.
