This week we welcomed Bruce McKay, Margaret & Ian Wheatley and Kevin and Lina Goode to St Philip’s, when Bruce made his annual visit to present the McKay House captains with their ties.

This tradition and the close associa-tion the College maintains with College Founder, Fred McKay’s family is very important to us all.

As Bruce mentioned to the College community at Wednesday’s assembly, it was his father’s (Rev Dr Fred McKay) choice to build a residential college here in Alice Springs and what a marvellous choice. It’s nearly 50 years since the residential college opened and in that time the College has grown to include the day school (which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year) and our student numbers for 2014 are nearing 700.

The success of the College has been due to the vision and dedication of Headmaster, Chris Tudor and the hard work and commitment of past and present staff, students, parents and supporters.

The potential of the College and our students continues to grow and evolve, and as I mentioned this week, each and every per-son has a choice in how this is developed and put to use. Making the right choices is vital in harnessing the abilities and gifts that we have been given.

Just like any other family, our boarding family has its ups and downs and last week was a challenging one for our boarders. I think we were all very pleased to reach the weekend and enjoy some down time either out with friends or relaxing in the dorms. On Friday we relaxed with movies and on Saturday we went ten pin bowling which we all enjoyed. Any previous boarding bowling records were well and truly bowled over by Kris Wheeler who proved himself not only a pro soccer player but a smooth operator on the bowling alleys with an impressive 169, at least 40 points ahead of

anyone else! Well done Kris! We’re wonder-ing what other talents he’s keeping hidden! On Sunday we swam, went to the stadium and got ready for the week ahead. This coming weekend we’ll be going to the Year 11 play, going on a Progressive dinner on Saturday night, and those who have cho-sen to, will be going to archery on Sunday morning. We’ll also be re-starting Friday fitness - a great way to start the weekend.

3 Strikes in a row...Boys’ Boarding News

It was another fun filled weekend in boys’ boarding. Friday night was the usual movie night, with the boys watching a selection of DVDs. On Saturday evening all the board-ers who were in for the weekend went ten-pin bowling at the Dustbowl. Wayde Shadforth was the king pin, with a total score of 118, followed closely by Mitchell McCormack on 117 and Isaac Motna on 113. Ethan Bowman also showed some glimpses of brilliance with 3 strikes in a row!

With the summer months ahead of us, it means many of the boys have now started up summer sports. Zach White has started well in the local U17 cricket competition and Jake Auricht is also playing in the U15 competition and had a match last Wednesday for the St Philip’s junior side.

Ethan, William Stojic, Wayde and Hayden McGregor are all playing soccer in the sum-mer 7s competition which starts this Thurs-day. Their team “A.S. Milan” are favourites to take out the U15 competition. Corby Borrett, William, Ethan, Mitchell, Isaac, Kaea Pomare, Mishai Elvey and Hayden are all playing hockey on a Monday afternoon. Kaea made his debut last Monday and impressed with two goals. Ethan has also been performing well and has been a con-sistent goal scorer!

Just a reminder it is Exeat weekend next weekend, November 8th until Sunday 10thNovember.

Year 11 Exam Timetable Semester 2

Triathlon Record SmashedThe College triathlon season is on again and two weeks into the Term 4 season James Steer and Jasper Edwards have both broken the long standing College Student Record held by Mitch Scott. James’ time of 17 minutes and 2 seconds took almost 20 seconds off the old mark.

Jasper Edwards was also under the old time, finishing in 17:13. Some “smart” racing saw both boys take a huge chunk out of their personal best times. Alia Clark-ElSayed and Jordyn Kindness (who is too young to attend St Philip’s College, but is joining us in 2014) also set some of the fastest female times seen since Jess Fuller was at the College.

With a few weeks to go there is a good chance these records will fall further. With a few minor tweaks to their race strategy can James or Jasper beat Mr Knott’s best time of 17 minutes flat to become the first Philipians to complete the course in under 17 mintues? Will Jordyn or Alia become the fastest females to complete the course? Come along on Friday mornings to find out. Racing starts at 6:30am sharp and is followed by breakfast. Tony Knott Head of PE
