It was a celebration of languages and cultures on Wednesday morning when the talents of our LOTE students and the LOTE department were showcased at assembly. Well done to all the per-formers for entertaining us during the assembly.

A Chinese proverb states a ‘language opens another window to look through to see the world’. It was good to see our Year 12 boarders getting in-volved in Reading Week this year, and they looked an interesting rabble as Captain Hook’s crew mates followed him obediently to school! The opposition weren’t quite as obedient on Friday night, howev-er, when Captain Hook returned from the AFL semi final looking very battered and bruised. However, the opposition were vanquished and Jess, Margo and Heleama’s team are in the final at 1pm this Saturday at Traegar Park. Good luck and we hope to have as many boarders as possible down there supporting them. Friday afternoon also saw nine of the girls take the opportunity to go and meet the Young Australian of the Year. They all came back very inspired and many thanks to Chris Leesong for organising this.

Friday was also Caelli’s 18th birthday. Over the years since she arrived, she has presented the kitchen with some interesting requests in terms of her birthdays cakes. While lots of boarders are happy to settle for a chocolate cake, Caelli surpassed herself this year with a request for a rainbow unicorn cake. Ketut, Tracey and Angie rose to the occasion and there was a very happy 18 year old. Thanks to all of them for their efforts.

On Saturday evening it was the boarders’ turn to cook. While some groups chose straight forward recipes such as chocolate brownie, others were very ambitious. Martha, ably assisted by Louise, Brooke and Kirsten, made a Kenyan beef and rice dish and salad, Hanna, Lyarni and Skye made

On Sunday afternoon Milco, Umema, Martha and Helena took homemade scones and muffins to the residents of Old Timers - a lovely thought and many thanks to them for that.

That’s plenty for one weekend – and next weekend we’re off camping on Saturday evening to Simpson’s Gap, to farewell our Year 12 boarders.

Neata Glass Giants NetballEnd of Season Presentations...

Last Saturday, Neata Glass Giants had their end of season Presentation Night at the Chifley. It was great to see the club come together to celebrate the end of a fantastic season. This year, we not only had students play for the club, but also a number of St Philip’s staff members. Over the season our 15&Under players filled in for the higher grades, and it was great to see both students and staff working together on the netball court. Thank you to all the juniors that willingly filled in whenever they were needed.

Each week, the following staff and students would put their best foot forward and play an hour’s worth of netball. It was fantastic to see all teams having fun and making improvements over the year... the wins were just an added bonus!

Chaplain’s Message A LIVING BIBLE

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright.

He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt and wild hair. The service has already started so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says

anything. Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realises that there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behaviour at the college fellowship, trust me, this had never hap-pened in church before!)

By now the people are really uptight and the tension in the air is thick. About this time the minister realises that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-grey hair, and a three piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for what he is going to do. How can you expect a man his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long

time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can’t even preach his sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane to the floor. With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion.

When the minister gains control, he says, “what I am about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen you will never forget. Be care-ful how you live. You may be the bible some people will ever read. LORD help me to be as accepting of others as you are of me. You accept me no matter how I am dressed or what I have done. Open my heart to accept others as quickly and fully in LOVE! Lord forgive me my sins like I forgive other’s sins against me. Help me to become more like CHRIST. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen”
