A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKMrs Michelle Cairelli2019, our year of harvest, has been such an abundant year for us at St Philip’s Christian College Gosford. Our school continues to grow and thrive. Students and staff are loving our new Technology facility. Our Junior School musical was wonderful, with lots of parents and families in attendance; a beautiful Gospel message through song and dance, always so sweet with every one of our Junior School and several Middle School students involved in the production. If you came to the Book Week parade, you would see that our Stage 3 Wakakirri production is no less heartwarming and beautiful. We have such amazing teachers and students to make all this possible and I love how mindful they are to bring Glory to God in their productions.

Our enrolments this year have reached 585, which is above our prediction, and even above our faith numbers for this year; what a GRACIOUS AND ABUNDANT GOD WE HAVE AND HOW FITTING IN OUR YEAR OF HARVEST!

Our subject selections for Years 11 and 12 have been able to be significantly increased and we are now offering several tertiary VET options as part of the HSC subject selections. This will enhance students ability, not only to gain employ-ment but to enter into university. For those who choose to do the VET III in Educational Support will even be able to ‘earn and learn’ as they complete paid hours of Teacher Aide work in the school as part of their course. The courses we will be offering in addition to traditional HSC subjects can be found on page 14 of this newsletter.

I have also been meeting with Christian School Principals from other Christian Colleges to see how we can support each other in offering more subjects in Years 11 and 12, to reduce the number of TAFE and Distance Ed subjects that children sometimes have to do.

I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 21 September, at our annual Spring Fair.

FROM OUR CHAPLAINMr Geoff Brown

On Friday we farewelled Mr Marthinus Van der Walt. During his farewell speech at our morning tea, he noted that he had to change his teaching style. He said that in South Africa they had a method for dealing with students that was different from our relational and loving approach.

When you think of religion, what comes to your mind? A set of rules, regulations and obligations...or a deep, intimate relationship with God?

I like to consider myself someone who has a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I believe He died so we could have a living, vital relationship with Him, not just a bunch of rules and regulations we’re forced to follow.

Yes, there are certain guidelines God wants us to follow, but His purpose in giving them is to protect us from the consequences of bad choices.

When we have a real relationship with God through Christ, life gets exciting because He stirs up a passion inside us to love people. And we don’t have to struggle to do the things He calls us to do—it just happens naturally.

God calls us into relationship not religion, not religion and I repeat again, not religion.

Take inventory and ask yourself why you do what you do. Is it out of obligation? Or is it because you love the Lord and desire an intimate friendship?

God loves you, and desires to have a vibrant, enjoyable relationship with you. The greatest thing you can do is get up every single day and love Him in return.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S DESK

Fantasia’s JourneyWell what a journey it was! Many months in the making, culminating in three wonderful performances with audience numbers reaching over 1200 in total. Thank you so much to our dedicated main cast, our wonderful Teachers who worked tirelessly to bring so many elements together, our parent volunteers and all of the students who stepped out of their comfort zone and performed in front of a packed audience.

I couldn’t have been prouder of our school and truly felt as though we were “World Class for the glory of God”. Of the many emails I received there was an overwhelming theme of how well the Christian heart of the musical shone through. Thank you once again for supporting this performance!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLMrs Helen Finlay

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

On the Monday following the musical Mrs Frost, Mrs Fahey, Miss McKnight and I travelled to Perth, WA to visit two schools, West Beechboro and Ellenbrook Primary. Both of these schools, like our Junior School have been recognised for turning around their results in literacy by focusing on explicit instruction in the classroom. What was of particular interest to us, was the sharp trajectory they have experienced in their mathematics results, which was the reason for our trip. These schools graciously opened their classroom doors to us and we had a couple of jam packed days observing the lessons, chatting with teachers and asking countless questions to their very accommodating and patient principals, deputy principals and teachers. As a result of our visit, we are starting to put into place the foundations for introducing a new mathematical program next year, one that has been based on the very successful Singaporean Mathematics program called Prime. So “watch this space”, very exciting things are happening in teaching and learning at St Philip’s.

BOOK WEEK 2019Mrs Belinda Bolger & Mrs Alisha Carman

Book Parade DayWe had a beautiful sunny day for our Book Parade and it was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents attending this year. The costumes were amazing and thank you to all of the parents for their hard work in creating them. Thank you also to Mrs Cairelli for her beautiful reading of ‘Possum Magic’ with a very life-like Possum puppet! Well done to Stage 3 and their teachers for an incredible Wakakirri performance that truly touched many of us in the audience with it’s emotional theme surrounding our drought-stricken farmers.

Thank you also to all of our parents who supported our Book Fair. We have sold around $6500 of books which is an incred-ible result! This will enable us to purchase new teaching ma-terials for Junior School. Thank you also to the parents who generously donated new books to our Library.

Well done to all of the students who entered our Colouring in and Lego competitions this year. Our judges had a tough job in choosing the winners as the standard this year was so high!

Author/Illustrator VisitThis year we enjoyed a visit from award-winning authors Kate and Jol Temple. They were a dynamic duo who kept our stu-dents entertained and engaged with many stories of their ex-periences in writing and book publication. Kate and Jol are very talented writers who encouraged the students to be cre-ative in their writing by demonstrating techniques such as re-verse poetry. The students were encouraged to keep a journal of their ideas and given some great ideas on how to develop characters in their stories. Meeting authors such as Kate and Jol is a special experience and we hope our students had fun!

We hope you had a wonderful day!

BOOK WEEK - A SENIOR SCHOOL PERSPECTIVEMrs Marjorie Lamrock

It was such a pleasure to observe our Stage 4 and 5 English students “building community” with Junior School in their literacy activity as part of Book Week. The students were active is asking the Junior School students to talk about their favourite books and characters and then either read to their student or were read to by the Junior School student.

The capacity to read is indeed a powerful thing, opening up the world of the imagination and possibility. It is a “secret power” far more valuable than super heroes and is the bedrock of learning. It was wonderful see the sub schools coming together to foster a love of reading.

It is only Week 5 but it feels as though Term 3 has been much longer! Always filled with loads of exciting events, with plenty more yet to come, I am passionate about seeing our students engaging in activities and events that inspire them, develop a love of learning, and that develop their areas of passion and purpose.

Earlier this Term, Mrs Maggie Healey and I went to Brisbane to participate in the Adolescent Success Conference.

This conference, held annually, is the only organisation in Australia with a focus on education for students in the Middle Years. We heard from keynote speakers varying from university professors, psychologists, school leaders, and even an educator heavily involved in the development of PISA – the assessment that evaluates educational systems from around the world in regards to their scholastic performance in mathematics, reading and science. The focus of this year’s conference was developing ‘future ready students’.

Mrs Healey and I had the opportunity to visit a Brisbane Middle School, who are renowned for their technology innovation. We participated in master classes and sessions focused on topics specific to developing 21st Century Learning skills in middle years’ students, delivered by teachers and educators from all around the country. With nearly 50% of the jobs that our Middle School students will be employed in not even in existence yet, there was a large focus on the skills that need to be taught and developing in our students to prepare them for their future. We are very excited to see how we can implement some of the things we have learned and been inspired to do in our Middle School. Watch this space!

As part of my Masters of Education study, I came across a case study of some schools in Perth who have turned their academic results around with some strongly supported pedagogical practices. Sharing this information with Mrs Finlay, the Head of Junior School, to encourage her with things already happening at SPCC. Mrs Finlay and I were enthusiastic to witness first-hand what approaches those Perth schools use in their classrooms and to see what we could further implement here at SPCC. Last week, Mrs Finlay and I, along with Miss McKnight and Mrs Frost, visited West Beechboro Primary School and Ellenbrook Independent Primary School in Western Australia, previously struggling schools in low socio-economic areas to now achieving above national benchmarks in literacy. What piqued our interest about these schools was their Singaporean approach to teaching Mathematics, which has seen them achieve a sharp upward trajectory of their results, particularly in NAPLAN. These schools kindly agreed to host us, allowing us to watch their Literacy and Numeracy teaching in action. We all walked away inspired about the things that we are already doing at SPCC that are seeing success and what we can further implement for even greater improvement with a consistent approach from Kindergarten to Year 6.

INSPIRE Last week, Middle School hosted our first INSPIRE Day. Regular classes were put on hold for a whole day and students from Year 5 – Year 8 opted in to a session in an area of passion or interest, where they could delve in, beyond the surface, in enriching activities. The Inspire Day activities included Knit a Blanket, Mountain Biking, Slum Survivor, Bits Beyond Bits, Yoyo Magic, Triple Threat (Dance/Drama/Sing), Introduction to Photoshop, Maths in the Mall, Board Game Bonanza, Cake & Plate, Confessions of a Craftaholic, and Lego Masters. It was inspiring to have all of the Middle School teachers share their passions and areas of talent with our students. A special thank you to Mr Johnston, Mrs Cairelli, and Mrs Claire McCormack from Cake & Plate who supported Middle School and shared their passions and talents also. I would like to acknowledge Mr Hynd for all of his effort and hardwork in organising and facilitating the day. Hopefully this is a day we can make an annual event in the years to come.

Book WeekBook Week is always a highlight on any school’s calendar. Middle School have been involved in lots of activities throughout the week. As a way of encouraging creativity in our students and to keep reading engaging, fun and relevant, some Middle School students participated in our Bake-A-Book activity. We had some creative, whimsical (and delicious!) submissions showcasing some true talent amongst our students. Thank you to Miss McKnight for organising this imaginative way for students to be involved in Book Week.

It was exciting to see many of the students and staff get involved in the Book Week costumes and for our Year 7 & 8 students to be working alongside Junior School students to create books.

UniformOver the past few weeks, we have had numerous requests from parents searching for lost property items. Pastoral Care teachers will often remind students to look for their items or to collect them at the end of a lesson. However, we implore you to please put your child’s name on uniform items and encourage your child to check student reception and the Middle School lost property basket. There are still many uniform items without names on them, which makes it difficult to return to students. Many uniform items are often left in the Hall, on the oval, or in specialist rooms such as the Drama, Music or TAS rooms, and daily there will often be a plethora of jackets, blazers and hats left outside on benches at the of the day. Staff will encourage students to be responsible for their own items and to check all appropriate places.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF STUDIES & INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIPMr Peter Muddle

There is so much going on at St Philip’s Christian College Gosford. Term 3 is a massive one regarding the number of events that are taking place around the school. In the first 4 weeks of the Term, we have had students involved in so many things – here are a few highlights:

MADD NightIn Week 1 our Year 12 students showed their wonderful gifts and abilities through their performances and showcase of major works in the hall. It was a great time of celebrating the hard work of the students and teachers throughout the year (and the Mexican food truck was a special treat also!). It was a great night to celebrate the achievements of our students, and to thank God for his provision of wonderful facilities in our school.

Trial ExaminationsOur Year 12 students have recently completed their HSC trial examinations, and many of them are finishing off their major works in readiness for sending them away for marking. We pray that they can turn their attention to studying for the final HSC examinations now, as they seek to find their direction for life beyond school.

Inspire DayLast Wednesday, our Middle School students were involved in the inaugural Inspire Day event – where students could choose an elective for the day in order to explore an area of passion under the guidance of passionate teachers and presenters, and with the support of some wonderful Year 11 students. Workshops included everything from cupcake decorating, Lego masters, knit a blanket in a day, slum survivor, maths at the mall, and many more activities. We have so many wonderful programs happening in our Extension and Enrichment space, and I am so grateful for the work of Mr Nathan Hynd in providing this opportunity for our students.

Book WeekThis week has been a celebration of reading through Book Week – an encouragement for our students and staff to continue to develop and foster a lifelong love of reading. There has been much excitement in this space over many years.

Fantasia’s JourneyOur Junior School musical was a wonderful highlight of the gifts and abilities of our students. Our staff and students worked so hard, and the musical was a wonderful success. Well done to Mrs Finlay and her team.

Subject Information Expo and SelectionsI enjoyed meeting with Year 8, 9 and 10 parents and students at the end of last Term as we held our subject information evening, which provided an opportunity for students to indicate their electives for 2020 and beyond. It has been wonderful to see the way in which our new electives have been embraced in allowing our students to explore their interests in a number of new areas. I am pleased to report that the following subjects will run in 2020:

• Year 9/10 students will study Christian Life Studies, English, Mathematics, Science, Geography and History, and in addition will study 2 of the following subjects as electives: Marine Science, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Activity and Sports Studies, Food Tech, Textiles Technology, Information Software Technology, Commerce, PVDI (Photography), Hospitality (Year 10 students with the opportunity of commencing the Year 11 course early), and Combined Metal and Timber Work.

• Year 11: English Extension 1, Advanced, Standard and Studies, Mathematics Extension 1, Advanced and Standard, Business Studies, Modern History, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, PDHPE, Ancient History, Community and Family Studies, Studies of Religion I (compressed, to be completed in Year 11 for the HSC), Visual Arts, Hospitality (Food and Beverage), Music, Textiles and Design, Information and Digital Technology (VET course), Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (with Narnia preschool) , Certificate III in Christian Ministry, Certificate III in Education Support.

We are excited about the many opportunities that our students will have to explore their passion and purpose, and look forward to our subject offerings continuing to expand into the future.

Staff Professional DevelopmentIt seems like a long time ago, but in the last week of the student break, our staff attended the St Philip’s Christian College Conference at SPCC Cessnock. It was wonderful to join as a group of schools, united in purpose as we seek to serve our school communities in being faithful to God in the task of Christian Education.

With so many things happening around the school, it is a good reminder that our busyness ought not just keep us on our toes, but keep us on our knees! We need to trust in God in all of the busyness and to give thanks to Him in all things, not least of which the wonderful things that make us busy serving Him. I would encourage you to be prayerful in particular for our Year 12 students who have less than 30 days of school left before they graduate. Please pray that they will be able to work to the best of their ability, but not to be defined by the success of their studies. Pray that their identity might be strongly rooted in Christ Jesus.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOLMr Cameron Johnston

Welcome to Term Three. The final Term for our Year Twelve before they graduate. The final Term of Year Eleven before their HSC year commences. It is a Term filled with many activities and opportunities for our students to develop and grow in their skills and character. Some such areas are highlighted below.

Senior School Students Building Community It has been encouraging over the last few weeks to see the ways in which our Senior Students have been building community across the different Sub-Schools. A couple of weeks ago a number of Senior School Students helped serve at the Junior School Musical. They gave their time to sell food, tickets, usher the guests and even help behind the scenes. I know the Junior School staff really appreciated their assistance in which the students helped, in their small way, to make Fantasia’s Journey a success.

Another event that the Senior School students have contributed to has been the Middle School Inspire Day. This was a day in which all of Middle School could elect to do an activity for the whole day, rather than their regular classroom lessons. Our Year Eleven students helped to support the staff run these activities. The Middle School students really enjoyed this level of interaction with the Senior Students,

and the Middle School staff were extremely appreciative of their contributions. The students pictured, for example, were helping on a slum simulation activity that Mr Brown looked after, to help Middle School students experience life in a slum and to appreciate all that we are blessed with in living in Australia. Well done to our Year Eleven!

Ski TripOver the recent week Senior School students have enjoyed some time on the slopes. With an amazing season for skiing at present they no doubt will return with some great stories. My thanks to Mr Maher and Mrs Healey for organising this fantastic opportunity for the students.

Cru CampOur Core Value of Christ First is of first importance to our College and so we are eager to explore ways in which we can support our students to engage in ways that this can be put into practice. Our College is partnering with Crusaders and Gosford Presbyterian Church to help run a Day Camp for students in K-6 during the October holidays. Our Senior Students will have the opportunity to be Assistant leaders in the program. Helping to lead small group discussions, activities and music. This is the first time that we have been involved and hopefully it will be the first of many as we seek to train and equip our students to go out and make disciples in His name.

Book WeekThis week saw the whole College be involved in Book Week. There were some amazing costumes and even the Senior School Staff were in on the act. Given the new arrival of our very own Mr Muddle, the theme for our staff had to be Mr Men or Little Miss Characters! My thanks to the English Department for organising the activities for our Senior Students to go down into Junior School. It was a fun day of learning for all involved.

Year TwelveThis week we welcome back our Year Twelve students after their Trial HSC Examinations. The last couple of weeks have seen them complete their final assessments in most of their subjects, with some subjects, such as Visual Arts and Design and Technology, still requiring the final touches on student major work before final submission. It will be an important period now for them to work together as they head closer to the finishing line for their time at the College. Please pray for them that they will be energised to finish strong and to leave a positive and lasting legacy. We look forward to celebrating the Year 12 Graduation with the Year Twelve students and parents on the 26th September.

New StaffAt the end of last week we farewelled our Maths and Chemistry teacher Mr Van Der Walt. He was taking over a maternity leave position for Mrs Frankham who will be working at Newcastle SPCC commencing next Term. Mr Van Der Walt was a very supportive staff member and desired all students come away with a passion for Maths. He is now teaching at Hillston Central School which is near Griffith. We wish him and his family every blessing and thank him for his tireless work during his short time with us.

It has meant that we have needed to replace Mr Van Der Walt and we are thankful for the arrival of Mrs O’Shea to take over the teaching of Maths. She has teaching experience from her time in Sydney and she will be joining us on a Part-Time basis looking after Year Seven, Eight and Nine Maths. We welcome her and look forward to helping her settle in to our community.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR UNIFORM SHOPMrs Alison Gill - Area Manager

Summer Uniform: Just 5 weeks to go of Term 3 with our winter uniform and this week we have seen some parents coming in to purchase summer uniforms for Term 4. It is not too early to bring your child in, beat the crowds and have an enjoyable shopping experience. Once you know the sizes you need, why not check out the 2nd-hand area for some summer items currently available and we have more bags of items to process this week. Senior School Skirts: In the coming weeks, the Uniform Shop will be have stock of SS grey skirts with a longer length to cater for some of our taller girls. These will be available in sizes Y10, W10 and W12. Our SPCC Uniform Policy states: Dresses and skirts are to be knee length and skirts are to be worn on the waist. Shoes: Every day and sports styles available all year round…*Supportive *Leather upper *Multi-fit system means they cater for all foot shapes. * Full-foot protection *In accordance with the school policy. Girls Dress Hats: If your daughters hats need a bit of a spruce up then here are the instructions from our supplier, MountcastleCARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR POLY PROPYLENE HATS• Sponge gently with cold water & use a mild soap (Lux or Sunlight – no abrasive chemical products) to remove spots.• Scrub soiled area with a small soft brush.• Rinse in cold water & shake dry.• DO NOT MACHINE WASH, TUMBLE DRY OR PLACE IN DISHWASHER.* It is recommended that your Mountcastle hat be professionally reblocked once a year to maintain its shape* If the hat band/ribbon has frayed over the years or is stained then you can purchase a replacement one from the uniform

shop for $20 (a lot cheaper than a new hat). Scarves: Soft, warm & and embroidered SPCC scarves. $22 and available now. The Uniform policy states – “Scarves may be worn in Terms 2 and 3. It can only be the black, SPCC embroidered scarf”. Rain Coats: 100% waterproof raincoats that protect from the wind and rain while travelling to and from school (especially good if catching public transport). They are durable, comfy and clear so you can still see our great SPCC uniform when out and about. All sizes, one great price - $22! Second-hand: We are appreciative of the families that are supporting the school (and helping other school families) by dropping in uniform items to be sold via the shop or making a donation to our welfare boxes. When purchasing or selling second-hand items from any of the 4 SPCC Uniform Shops you can be assured that you are purchasing good quality and correct uniform items as our processors follow the SPCC Second-Hand Policy and this ensures that standard of uniform at St Philip’s remains high. Consignment forms are available at the shop or by downloading from the SPCC webpage via the ‘Uniform Shop” tab. At the end of each Term you will receive credit vouchers for any items of yours that have sold and these are like “cash” and can be used in the uniform shop or swapped with another parent for cash. If you no longer have children enrolled a credit to your bank account will be applied. If you have unwanted uniform items (they don’t fit anymore etc) and would like to receive credit to spend in the shop, then please bring your items in to be processed. A current list of available second-hand items is listed overleaf.

Any questions or concerns regarding uniform items, please see staff in the shop or email [email protected].
