St. Peter Summer Learning Plan 2020
We all need to take a break in the summertime! Have some fun. Keep your body, mind and
soul in shape! Lay out a blanket in the grass, hop on and read.

Incoming 1st through 8th grade students have a required summer reading assignment. The goal
is to encourage reading for pleasure and to help students transition from summer to a new
school year. Summer reading is one method to help build literacy skills by increasing reading
fluency and comprehension.
All incoming Grade 1 students have a login and password for Raz-Kids, an online guided reading
program we use at St Peter School. Minutes are tracked with Raz-Kids so teachers can check
progress.
If you cannot access Raz-Kids at home, you can go to the Lorain Public Library or supervise your
children here at St. Peter School on Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9:00 to Noon.
Over the summer, students are to visit www.raz-kids.com for a minimum of 60 minutes per
week.

Grade 5 Summer Reading Assignment

Summary: Enter the hilarious world of ten-year-old Kenny and his family, the Weird Watsons of
Flint, Michigan. There's Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron, who's thirteen and
an "official juvenile delinquent." When Byron gets to be too much trouble, they head South to
Birmingham to visit Grandma, the one person who can shape him up.
Assignment: Read the historical fiction novel and complete the following questions to
demonstrate that you have read the story. Attach your work to this sheet. As you read,
remember to re-read any sections that are difficult and use your comprehension strategies.
This summer reading assignment will be included in your first quarter grade and will be due
Friday, August 23, 2019.
