A Prayer of Solidarity During the COVID-19 Pandemic

For all who have contracted coronavirus, We pray for care and healing. For those who are particularly vulnerable, we pray for safety and protection. For all who experience fear or anxiety, we pray for peace of mind and spirit. For affected families who are facing difficult decisions between food on the table or public safety, we pray for policies that recognize their plight. For those who do not have adequate health insurance, we pray that no family will face financial burdens alone. For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status, we pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all. For our brothers and sisters around the world, we pray for shared solidarity. For public officials and decision-makers, we pray for wisdom and guidance. Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all. Grant peace. Grant comfort. Grant healing. Be with us, Lord. Amen.

Our parish will be served by Father Paul Zywan (Pastor),

Father Ken Kezmarsky (Senior Parochial Vicar), Father Bill Terza (Senior Parochial Vicar), Father Jason Charron (Parish Chaplain) and Deacon Gerry Como.

Our Diocese of Pittsburgh strategic reopening plan includes phases based on comprehensive recommendations from the diocesan COVID-19 Task Force in coordination and consultation with state and regional healthcare leaders. The phases give definition to how we can work with the Commonwealth’s guidelines to restart our in-person liturgical celebrations. We have, and will continue to be vigilant in doing our part to help “flatten the curve” of the spread of COVID-19. Through all of this we have seen, in so many ways, that Christ is with us always.

The Pastor and each parish reopening team will develop a system that adequately allows the faithful to gather, in a way that meets all requirements stated in the guidelines. Each Pastor should assess his specific situation to determine a method for keeping track of the number of people attending and controlling attendance so it does not exceed allowable limits (see pages 5 & 6 for plans specific to our parish grouping). A parish may consider establishing a reservation system for Mass attendance for both weekday and weekend services. Creating a reservation system may allow the parish to know exactly who is attending Mass on any given day in case contact tracing is necessary. Daily records should be maintained. Merely depending on “first-come, first-served” for Mass attendance may not be practical. We need to be prepared for changing directives.

BECOMING ONE

It’s Pentecost Sunday, the culmination of the Easter season and the birthday of the Church! We have been gifted by the same Spirit who transformed the disciples of Jesus into brave evangelizers for the faith. In one month we will celebrate our own birthday into the reality of a new parish. Jesus’ mission of proclaiming the Gospel of God’s love for all, which He entrusted to His disciples and sealed in them by the gift of His Spirit, is likewise given to us this day to carry into our world. Let us continue to pray for ourselves and our new parish: “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.”

We miss you and look forward to being together in our Churches for worship! Until then, you continue to be in our daily prayers and we ask for your prayers too. Our daily and weekend Masses continue to be broadcast on YouTube. Thank you for your continued support. We are in this together!

MAY 14 DIOCESAN NEWS RELEASE On Thursday, May 14, we received a news release from the Diocese in which Bishop Zubik shared details regarding the plan for the gradual reopening of Churches. For the Diocesan News release, open the link: https://www.diopitt.org/news/diocese-of-pittsburgh-announces-gradual-reopening-of-churches-starting-may-15

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER – REOPENING GUIDE On Friday, May 15, a Comprehensive Reference Guide developed by the Diocesan COVID-19 Task Force Team was

sent to all clergy in the Diocese. The 43-page document titled, Moving Forward Together, details health and safety

guidelines that need to be met as Churches reopen for on-site liturgical celebrations.

Moving Forward Together, was to be reviewed by the pastor and priests, in order to assist in decisions on reopening based on the government guidelines, as well as our “assessment of the ability to meet all the necessary health and safety requirements … ”. After a thorough examination of these guidelines and thoughtful discussion, we have assessed that some of these requirements can be met at the present time, while others will take more time and planning. At the direction of the Bishop, the pastoral decision is to be made by the Administrative Priest Team. Based on the complexity of the guidelines, we are not at the present, able to move forward with opening our Churches. In addition, in this transition with the parish merger just six weeks away, the new Pastor/Administrator will be free to implement these guidelines when and as he sees fit.

NEXT STEPS There are some steps presented in the diocesan Moving Forward Together Reopening Guide that we can make right now, namely: Identify a COVID-19 Safety Team ideally comprised of clergy, staff, volunteers and a health care professional for the purposes of implementing and monitoring the guidelines. The Safety Team will be responsible for the following: Designate a cleaning and sanitizing team to meet safety recommendations as noted by the CDC and EPA. The team should develop procedures that create a safe and welcoming environment utilizing the diocesan toolkit provided by the COVID-19 Task Force Team. Training of ushers and greeters, securing staff and volunteers who will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing, managing seating arrangements, designating a distinct entrance and exit from the Church buildings and maintaining social distance requirements. Establish a system of accountability and reporting of cleaning and sanitizing schedules according to use of the building.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to help us sanitize and prepare the churches for worship and prayer. The more volunteers we have, the more smoothly things will go as we look forward to eventually opening for Mass. Volunteers must be under the age of 65 and free from serious health conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory, or an immune deficiency disease). See the Sign-up Form on Page 6.

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER Continuing in the “Yellow Phase”

CHURCHES OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER HOURS for Private Prayer at each Church: 11:00AM – 2:00PM, Monday thru Friday. There will be seating in designated areas only so that cleaning and proper sanitation can be carried out on a regular basis. The areas open for private prayer will be clearly marked. In addition to daily cleaning and sanitizing, the use of masks and social distancing (maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet) is required for any use of the Church buildings. ENTRANCE into and out of the Churches will be as follows: - St. Clare of Assisi – use the side entrance closest to the parking lot, near the Tabernacle - St. Elizabeth of Hungary – use the side entrance closest to the school parking lot - Holy Spirit – use the main entrance doors - St. Thomas à Becket – use the main entrance doors closest to the Chapel RESTROOMS in the Church need to remain locked, as it is not possible for staff to clean and sanitize after each use. SIGN-IN Please sign-in upon entering the Church. If someone becomes ill with COVID-19, those in attendance will be contacted to be alerted of the potential risk.

CONFESSIONS The Sacrament of Reconciliation will continue to be offered on Saturdays from 10:30 - 11:30AM in the parking lot of St. Thomas à Becket Church. Two priests will be available to hear Confessions. Those receiving the sacrament, will pull up to the station where the priest is seated and remain in their vehicle (maintaining at least a distance of 6 feet). Due to the limitations of the outdoor arrangements, anonymous (behind the screen) Confessions will not be an option. The use of masks and social distancing is required.

FUNERAL MASSES Limited Funeral Masses with cleaning/sanitizing guidelines in place, expanding to groups of no more than 25 people. The use of masks and social distancing is required.

WEDDINGS Limited Weddings with cleaning/sanitizing guidelines in place, expanding to groups of no more than 25 people. The use of masks and social distancing is required.

BAPTISMS Due to the extensive protocol outlined in the Moving Forward Together Reopening Guide, the scheduling of Baptisms will be postponed until we are confident that we can fulfill all of the health and safety precautions and requirements. When Baptisms resume, the use of masks and social distancing will be required, with groups of no more than 25 people.

HOLY MASS The broadcasting of daily and weekend Masses will continue at this time. Please go to “YouTube” and search for “parish grouping 225”. Daily Mass is broadcast at 9:00AM and the Saturday anticipated Mass [this is also Sunday Mass], is broadcast at 6:00PM on Saturday evenings. This Mass can be viewed any time either day after the Saturday 6:00PM broadcasting.

After review of the Moving Forward Together Reopening Guide, the Administrative Priest Team has decided that more time and planning is necessary in order to meet the health and safety requirements (i.e., implementing the COVID-19 Safety Team, Cleaning and Sanitizing Teams), before a date can be set to resume the public celebration of the Mass. This public celebration of the Mass in our Churches will not be on June 1 or the weekend of June 6 and 7, but will resume at a later date to be announced. As a reminder, until all restrictions of the pandemic are lifted, the faithful are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass during this phase.

Please mail this form to your Church Office.

LOCATION OF SACRAMENTS We all seek to return to normal relations with other people during these difficult times. As we make decisions as to the location of Confessions and Mass, this is done from the perspective of how we can best minister to you, given the logistical constraints that none of us are used to (i.e., Confessions in the parking lot and possible outdoor Mass). Some of the factors we must take into consideration are ease of access, accommodating two stations for confessions, the layout of the parking lot and developing a regular schedule/site in order to establish some sense of routine. We ask you to be mindful of three important considerations: First, these accommodations are temporary; second, we are becoming one parish and we are presented with daily opportunities to grow, go beyond our comfort zone, which will help us more fully live this reality; and finally, Jesus waits and is longing to embrace us through the sacraments – calling us into a deeper unity in the Body of Christ.

REQUESTING CANDLES LIT IN OUR CHURCHES If you would like to have a candle lit for a special intention, please mail your intention(s) with a check/cash to the Church Office. You can also call the Church Office to request that a candle be lit for a special intention. In order to prevent possible transmission of germs from touching the candles and/or candle stick lighters, candles will only be lit at your request, by staff.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS We are all excited about reopening the Churches. However, if you are not feeling well or you are vulnerable (over the age of 65, have a compromised immune or respiratory health issue, or another risk factor), you are encouraged to continue praying from the privacy of your home. We ask that everyone follow the standard prevention protocols: wear a mask; maintain social distance of 6 feet and practice frequent hand hygiene. Any time you feel ill, please stay home.

Office of the Bishop May 27, 2020 Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit and Saint Thomas à Becket Parishes: On April 12, 2015, when I initiated On Mission for The Church Alive!, who of us could have ever imagined the ways in which the COVID-19 virus and crisis would affect every aspect of our daily lives? As we continue to live through many changing realities, please know that I pray for you daily asking our Heavenly Father to shower you with abundant grace, good health and much hope. Despite present challenges with the pandemic, your parishes completed the merger process of consultation with parishioners, and members of your Pastoral and Finance Councils signed a petition to move forward with the merger plan. In turn, your grouping administrator (pro-tem), Father Frederick Cain, petitioned me to merge the parishes. On May 7, 2020, the diocesan Priest Council and Vicars General gave consent to the proposal, and I have accepted these recommendations: Effective July 1, 2020, your current parishes will cease to exist, and the new parish of Triumph of the Holy Cross will take their place. Every member of your current parishes is now a member of the newly formed parish. Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish will also inherit all of the assets, responsibilities and liabilities of the current parishes. Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish will be served by the following clergy team: Father Paul Zywan, Pastor Father Jason Charron, Parish Chaplain Father Kenneth Kezmarsky, Senior Parochial Vicar Deacon Gerard Como Father William Terza, Senior Parochial Vicar Your current grouping administrator (pro-tem), Father Frederick Cain, has requested and has been granted permission to begin retirement. Your priests and deacon have worked diligently in service to you and to God throughout this process, and I am deeply grateful for their care and leadership. This has not been a simple task. Jesus never promised that it would be easy to carry his message of love and mercy to others. He was clear that sacrifice would be necessary. However, you are positioning your new parish for more effective ministry by addressing financial needs, sharing resources and allowing your clergy to focus on the spiritual work for which they were ordained. With your faith in Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit, I invite you to warmly welcome and serve each other as you become one parish family. Grateful for our continued efforts together in being On Mission for The Church Alive!, and for our belief that “Nothing is Impossible with God, I am Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend David A. You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What is happening on the other side? As tides continue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery and the effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of their presence is left behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its humble mark upon the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble still makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be big.

You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that, can influence time and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that; fierce and torrential and then almost still and silent, creating and recreating nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit continues to move over, around and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit and unknown possibilities to what we humbly bring with us and that same Spirit eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ. The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their friend-God, humble offerings and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very little. Do you believe that you are being led and that you have a purposeful life? We often do not realize our value because we do not think that the little we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A little flour mixed with water and embraced by a prayer of blessing transforms simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharistic presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gifts of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underestimate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an elderly widow, the listening ear offered in one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry and the loving shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gifts offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone.

Remember our faithful departed in your prayers …

Mary Aileen Guba

Mary Ann (Klawinski) Radziukinas

May all souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

With Pentecost, the disciples significantly changed. They were charged up and ready to go. They received the Holy Spirit and no longer harbored fear and apprehension. They knew who they were and what needed to be done. With the peace of the Lord and the power of the Spirit within them, they set out to do amazing things with simple means. We have received the Holy Spirit as well. What keeps us from truly understanding the mission of Christ and continuing the advancement of the Gospel? Some may think this was a work of the past and not relevant now. Others may believe that the work set before me is simply about doing what I need to do to merit heaven and has little do with my brothers and sisters. Take a good look at the world. More are in need of hearing the Good News than there ever were. We have the power to get up and out and start doing life-changing things!
