Activities include kids’ kitemaking, beginning sport kite lessons and sport kite demonstrations. One of the festival’s most popular children’s event, the Teddy Bear Drop, is slated for 1 p.m. both days. The event is for children ages 10 and younger. Children will also have the opportunity to learn how to fly a sport kite and play vari- ous kite games. A mass ascension, in which anyone can partici- pate, will be at noon both days. The first 50 people to sign up and participate in each event will receive a special- issue event pin. A mass ascension is where everyone is invited to fly a kite of the specified style on the field at the same time. The style of kite for Saturday is either delta or cellular and for Sunday, flat/ bowed or sparless. Fliers come from all over to compete. In years past the festival has had fliers from Oregon, Southern Washington and even Canada. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday eve- ning, the indoor kite com- petition takes place in the Coupeville High School gym. The event consists of fly- ing the kites without wind — using only the fliers’ body and hand movements. The festival will offer some food options, including hotdogs sold by the Central Whidbey Lions Club. There is also a raffle with items donated from individu- als and businesses from all over Whidbey Island. The raffle is the club’s main source of fundraising.
