Whidbey Island farmers are growing and raising more than 300 varieties of veggies, herbs, fruits, flow- ers and livestock, and visi- tors can explore the farms this weekend (Sept. 12-13) during the 2015 Whidbey Island Farm Tour. Learn how farmers are producing value-added products using sustainable practices and providing edu- cational opportunities to students from near and far. Also learn about Whidbey’s local agriculture, taste truly fresh foods, and check out the wide variety of products from our producers. Nearly a dozen farms all over Whidbey Island are opening doors — or gates — to visitors and sharing their contributions to Whidbey’s agricultural landscape. Visit a working horse farm on North Whidbey that offers breeding, training and an educational facility. Wildwood Farm will show- case and demonstrate saddle seat riding, dressage and hunter/jumper. Or visit the sheep at Glendale Shepherd in Clinton and learn how the Grade A dairy farm uses sus- tainable farming practices and produces handcrafted sheep milk cheeses. Students at the Greenbank Farm’s Organic Farm School will offer guided tours that will include animal feeding, seed cleaning and veggie harvesting and tasting. The tour, which is spon- sored and organized by the Whidbey Island Conservation District, is free and participants can start anywhere and visit as many or as few farms as they like. Some farms are offering events at specific times, and a few are open Saturday only. Tour hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. New this year, learn about the history of agriculture on the island from pre-settle- ment to the modern era. Learn the stories of farms that are over 100 years old as well as those that are new to our agricultural community. Many farms will host food purveyors, activities and entertainers, so bring the kids and spend the day “down on the farm.” For more information, go to www.whidbeyfarmtour.com WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2015 | Vol. 1, No. 19 | WWW.WHIDBEYNEWSTIMES.COM | FREE ACORN PROPERTIES, INC 32800 SR 20, Suite 2 Oak Harbor WA 98277 Phone (360) 679-4585 Each Office Independently Owned and Operated If you’re ready to buy or sell, We’re ready to help.
