Dear Division Members: As we head into August and look forward to the 256th ACS National in Boston, it has been a very productive and exciting time in the Division of Small Chemical Businesses (SCHB) since the New Orleans meeting. Some highlights include: • Completion of an Innovative Program Grant (IPG) entitled “Expanding SCHB’s Presence in the ACS Northwest Region,” awarded to SCHB in January 2018 and lead by Joe Sabol SCHB has been selected as a finalist for ChemLuminary Awards: •Global Engagement Award for Technical Divisions •Recognition of Innovation and Outstanding Service to Members of a Division •Outstanding Local Section-Technical Division Collaboration SCHB submitted two proposals for IPGs: •“SCHB Member Business Development at Regional Meetings”, submitted by George Ruger, SCHB Chair Elect •“Advancing Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Innovate Now- Launch ~ Leverage ~ Lead”, submitted by Jennifer Maclachlan, SCHB Communications Chair, and Mukund Chorghade, Ph.D., SCHB Alternate Councilor and Chairman Emeritus SCHB members Bill Carroll, Jr. and Joe Sabol will be inducted as Fellows of the American Chemical Society SCHB has put together an interesting and informative program. Tuesday evening is the ChemLuminary Awards Ceremony, and SCHB is a finalist in three categories. Viewing posters and reception is at 8:00 P.M., and the awards are at 9:00 P.M. Please attend and cheer for SCHB!

PROGRAMMING

BOSTON BULLETINSCHB Program Committee

Details of the ACS 256th National Meeting, August 19-23th, 2018, themed “Nanoscience, Nanotechnology & Beyond”, are found at www.acs.org/boston2018, including the on-line meeting planner and mobile app. The final program is also in the July 30th C&EN.

The SCHB program will primarily be in the Aloft Boston Seaport Hotel and the Boston Convention & Exposition Center (BCEC), except for special events Reception and ChemLuminary Awards.

The SCHB Executive Committee will hold their open meeting on Saturday, August 18th, from 6:00-9:00 P.M. in BCEC 104A.

On Sunday, August 19th, be sure to attend the SCHB Open House & Continental Breakfast from 8:00-9:00 A.M., hosted by Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr, LLP, followed by presentations on SCHB benefits, programming, and resources. In the afternoon will be Intellectual Property Basics for Chemical Businesses, with refreshment provided by Osha Liang LLP. Both are in Aloft Boston Seaport, Mann 3.

Sunday from 5:30-7:30 P.M. is the SCHB poster session in BCEC Hall B2/C and the SCHB Booth 1732 in the Expo, BCEC Hall A. The Expo will also be open Monday and Tuesday 9:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. SCHB members are invited to take some time at the poster or in the booth. REGIONAL MEETING REPORT 2018

SCHB Program Committee

George Ruger presented an SCHB poster at the nanoMARM meeting on June 3rd in Bethlehem, PA.

SCHB was an exhibitor at the 22nd Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference, June 18th-20nd in Portland OR. Members George Ruger and Joe Sabol represented SCHB. The 23rd GC&EC Closing the Loop will be June 11th-13th, 2019, in Reston, VA. Symposia proposals are due September 10, 2018: http://www.gcande.org/call-for-symposia.

At the 73rd Northwest Regional Meeting (NORM), June 24th-27th in Richland, WA, SCHB was a sponsor of a full day of Innovation Programming and a half day on the impact of wine science innovation, organized by Janet Bryant and Judy Giordan.

The Midwest Regional Meeting (MWRM) is coming up October 21st-23rd, in Ames IA, with SCHB sponsoring Entrepreneurs Tool Kit: Resources and Best Practices, organized by Abhi Kantak. For more information, see: www.mwrm2018.chem.iastate.edu.

Gerry Meyer, SCHB α-member, received the American Insti-tute of Chemists Gold Medal in Philadelphia on May 9th, 2018, at Science History Institute (formerly Chemical Heritage Foun-dation) Heritage Day. In addition to Gerry’s award, given were Bolte Award for Industrial Chemistry, AIC Award, and Othmer Award in memory of the Founder (and benefactor) of the In-stitutes. “I am honored to have received the Gold Medal and to have participated,” said Gerry. The annual event is held at the Institute’s building at Independence Park. SCHB IN 2019 AND BEYOND

The ACS 257th National Meeting will be in Orlando, FL, from March 31st to April 4th, 2019. The theme will be “Chemistry for New Frontiers.” It is not too late to organize a symposium, and if you are interested, contact Joe Sabol [email protected]. Abstract submission will open August 20th, 2018.

The ACS 258th National Meeting will be in San Diego, CA, from August 25th-29th, 2019. The theme will be “Chemistry of Water.” SCHB will submit its proposed symposia in December 2018; contact Joe Sabol if you would like to organize a symposium.

Pacifichem will be in Honolulu, HI, from December 15th-22nd, 2020. If you did not submit your symposium proposal in the first round, the second round call for symposium proposals will be open January-April, 2019. For more information, please see: www.pacifichem.org.
