Since greenhouse gases are vital toour survival, why has the term takenon such a pejorativeconnotation? How do clouds, aerosols, and the

planetary surfaces affect the climate? Does the basic mechanism thatexplains the maintenance of a livable

planet explain the data in climate plots?

How are ice cores and paleoclimateindicators (temperature proxies)used to infer climatic conditionsand changes in the past? Could any

present changes be part of a naturalcycle of change the Earth is alwaysundergoing? How robust are global climatechange indicators? What is the evidence that humanactivity is a cause for global climatechange?

Committee on Economic and Pro-fessional Affairs

While the overall percentage of unemployed people in the US hasgone down in recent months, theunemployment rate for chemists andmaterial scientists has reached 4.6%.The committee continues to work to-wards meeting the changing employ-ment needs of our members despitethe highest unemployment rate for ACS members since 1970.

Automation of radiopharmaceutical synthesis and ef cient pre-clinical screening of new tracers accelerate transla-tion of agents from bench-to-clinic. RadioMedix Inc, a Houston-based biotechnology company, provides solutions

to these needs. RadioMedix is focused on commercialization of SmartMedix system, automated-module for production of SPECT and PET radiopharmaceuticals. This new disposable cassette-based system generates tracersin less than 20min with high yield and purity, limiting user exposure to high doses of radiation. All labeling proto-cols are compliant with cGMP regulations. SmartMedix can accommodate all commercially available 68Ge/68Gegenerators, methods for radioisotope puri cation, and protocols for synthesis of PET/SPECT agents.

RadioMedix Inc. is also developing theranostic agents and new chelation platform for PET/SPECT imaging. Our lead theranostic candidate, GlucoMedix, has been selected to target glucose transporters (GLUT1) overexpressed incancer cells. It can be labeled with short half-life isotope, Gallium-68, to provide high sensitivity and speci city of early tumor detection. GlucoMedix has demonstrated superior imaging properties than 18F-FDG showing limiteduptake by heart tissue and brain in animal studies. GlucoMedix can be also labeled with beta-emitting isotopes suchas Lu177, Y90 for potential therapeutic applications.

Recently, RadioMedix expanded research capabilities by addition of two new facilities, Mansour Center for Targeted Molecular Imaging and Therapy and cGMP suite. Our company offers state-of-art imaging services for

pre-clinical validation of new tracers. RadioMedixs cGMP suite is equipped for radiolabeling of lead candidates, optimization of their kit formulation and QC analysis for Phase I/ II clinical trials. We are ready to serve the researchcommunity of chemists and clinicians. Izabela Tworowska, Ph.D., M.S.Pharm.

    The EntrepreneurialInitiative Advisory Board

The Entrepreneurial Initiative Advi-sory Board (EIAB) was authorized

by the ACS Board of Directors in2012. Funding for a new program, the Entrepreneurial Initiative (EI)was authorized as a two-year pi-lot effort, and the board will serveat the pleasure of the ACS Boardof Directors. Michael Lefenfeld(Chair), Judy Giordan, Todd Kim-mel, Sadiq Shah, Mike Strem,Sharon Vercellotti, and Bilal Zuberiare members of the EIAB, and theywork with ACS staff to achieve their goals. EIABs mission is advancingthe careers of ACS members towardthe creation of quality, sustainable,U.S.-based chemistry jobs throughthe creation and growth of chemicalstart-ups. The plan is to acceleratechemical innovation and restore thegreater chemical enterprises historicleadership in creating sustainable

jobs for U.S.-based chemists andscienti c professionals.

    Entrepreneurial Initiative Activity

Entrepreneurial Training ProgramACS has launched the Entrepreneur-ial Training Program (ETP). Thenext application period will openOctober 1st. The ACS has partneredwith Kauffman Fasttrac to offer a training program that stimulatesinnovation and entrepreneurship. The program offers three curriculathat correspond to the needs of ACSmembers at different stages of their entrepreneurial plan. In the rstcompetition for July four of six ap-

plicants were chosen for the Entre- preneurial Training Program.

Optimize your entrepreneurialplan! Apply to the Entrepreneur-ial Resource Center (ERC)

There are resources available to helpyou develop and execute your suc-cessful entrepreneurial plan at Entre-

preneurial Resources Center (ERC).The ERC has been designed tocultivate new strategic partnershipsand make existing ACS resourcesmore accessible to members in order to advance entrepreneurship and cre-ate new job opportunities throughoutthe chemical enterprise. Twenty of twenty-six applicants were acceptedinto the Entrepreneurial ResourcesCenter for July 2012.

The next application period for ETPand ERC will open October 1st for

    both ETP and ERC.
