Today the solar plant covers 23% of the island’stotal energy requirement. The main challenge wasthe grid stability due to fast power fluctuationsrelated to cloud movement. SMA Sunbeltintegrated a Li-Ion storage facility to absorb suchfluctuations, provide energy shifting andfrequency stability functionalities also at nighttime.
The observed solar fraction reaches 88% atmidday.

The battery system has been designed to allowfor a second phase expected for 2018.
