Sligo Live and CCÉ Sligo Town Branch jointly host the ‘Fiddler of Dooney'. The first of twodays of intense competition will see the under 16 fiddlers compete for the Junior Fiddler ofDooney title. The competition was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of the oldest and mostprestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. Winners have come from all over thecountry and from traditional musicians based overseas. Competitors need not be tied toany rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligostyle with its infectious lift.

For more than a century there have been strong linksbetween traditional music in Sligo and the U.S.A. Torecognise and strengthen this bond, The Fiddler ofDooney has an adjudicator with strong bonds to thetradition in America. Brian Conway, Winifred Horan, TonyDe Marco, Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke and Maurice Lennonhave all filled that role. This year we are privileged tohave Jesse Smith, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and now living in Dublin, joining former winner MaeveDonnelly in judging the competition.

Horslips, the Irish supergroup which disbanded in 1980,before making comebacks in 2009 and 2011, are to pleasethe crowds one more time when they explode onto theKnocknarea Arena stage at Sligo Live. The band thatdefined a generation, lit up Sligo Sounds 71 - Ireland’sfirst-ever rock festival. At that time nobody had seen anact like them, mixing prog rock with traditional music. They turned trad into rock! Fintan O’Toole described it wellin the Irish Times: “Within a year, Horslips, extravagantlycoiffed and dressed up like peacocks at a wedding, weretuning up their electric mandolins. Within another year, they were the biggest rock band yet seen in Ireland.”
