In 1975, in a field in Annaghmore, a small gang offlying enthusiasts got together and formed Sligo’s first (andonly) Aero Club. Forty years later, Kate Winter meets one ofthose founder members, Gerry O’Hara, along with his long-term flying companions and fellow members Ben Healyand John Curran, to get just a few of the stories so far. Kieran Gorman AKA Perry Blake sits sipping his pint in alocal pub in Dromahair, wearing wellies and chatting withsome locals. He may have raised a few eyebrows when hefirst arrived in the village, complete with "a shock of Billy Idolbleach blonde hair" in an old purple Mercedes withnumber plates reading 'CEX', but these days, he fits in alittle better. Damien Tansey is not onlyone of Sligo's best knownand most respected

solicitors, he is also recognisednationally as an expert in hisarea of litigation. Joining forceswith his son, Ciarán, whoseextensive expertise lies incorporate law, they haveopened the new law firm,Damien Tansey Solicitors, inCastle Street. The two menspeak to Sligo Now aboutpractice, ethos and hard work.

Tell us how the recentlyfounded Damien TanseySolicitors came into being herein Castle Street?DT:Well I founded DamienTansey and Associates in 1980and grew it into a very bigpractice, perhaps the biggestin the West of Ireland in 2008.And in 2008 we joined withCallans of Boyle. A confluenceof events conspired to create,in my mind, an inevitabledecision to resign from the firmthat resulted, Callan Tansey, and to instead set up a newone, at the very beginning ofthis year.CT: And when I heard thatDamien was going to found thisnew firm, I said I was in. I wasvery keen to bring what I'velearned over the past ten orfifteen years in the biggest firmsin the country “to the party”, soto speak, and to bring thatexpertise to Sligo.

Was it something you hadaspired to over the years, toeventually open a practicetogether?DT: Any father has an ambitionthat his sons, if they are in thesame profession, would joinforces to create a larger force. But in 2008 when the mergerwith Callans occurred, theyweren't interested. I have twosons who are lawyers, Ciarán isthe eldest, he was at A&LGoodbody at that stage, andNiall as well, who was with a

large firm called CliffordChance, one of the biggest inthe world in fact. And Niall iscurrently practicing at thatfirm’s Hong Kong office.Neither of them in 2008 wereinterested in coming back.CT: At the time, I was with A&LGoodbody in London, haddone a stint with a law firm inParis and was due to go backto Dublin and there was a vastamount of expertise to begained along that path. Alongthe way, I was picking up a lot,and I thought it wisest toremain on that track. But then,of course, you get to a pointwhere you have acquired theexpertise, and that expertisebecomes mobile.

Ciaran, did it feel like a bit of ashock to the system to comeback to Sligo after living andworking in capital cities for thepast fifteen years?CT: Not really. I've always hada fondness for Sligo, it's whereI'm from, where I grew up andwent to school. I was here formaybe twenty years before Istarted working away, so Iknow it pretty well and havelots of friends here. So it wasn'ta chore to come back here. Ihad been here all along oversummers and other holidays, too. And we have courthearings and meetings all thetime in Dublin so I'm up anddown all the time really, because the court system inIreland revolves around thecapital city.

And what does it mean, interms of business, for you to bebased here in Sligo rather thanin the capital or its environs?DT: We get work in our area ofspecialty from all over thecountry and we get work notonly directly from clients butalso from other firms ofsolicitors who see us as havingexpertise for example in thefield of medical or dental

negligence, and they wouldrefer that type of work to usbecause of our reputation.Last week I had a lady fromPortlaoise, another fromGalway and this morning agentleman from Athlone.Distance is not a deterrent atall, we can go and meet ourclients elsewhere also. Withsocial media and computersetc, the interaction betweenclients and their solicitors andbetween solicitors and othersolicitors and even experts inthe UK, Canada and America,is conducted easily andvigorously.

What would you say is themain ethos of your firm? DT: The worth of the claim andthe merit of the cause arewhat's important. In this business you need a lotof strength, a lot of courage. There has to be a sort offearlessness in your make upand a get up and goapproach. A lot of the time,we are pitted against largeinstitutions and given thatcircumstance ninety per centof people might back off atthe prospect at having to takeon a Golliath in the arena ofthe courtroom. Whereas withus, that's part of the attraction, that's part of what motivatesus! We are courageous andinnovative and able, but neverreckless.CT: I would say our ethos is oneof representation and givingeveryone a chance to tell theirstory. People come to us withwrongs done to them, whichshouldn't happen at all. Welive in a society where correctconduct is important andpeople have certainresponsibilities that they needto be held to if they take themon, so I guess the message is...that we will provide fearlessrepresentation and givepeople a voice when theyneed it.

And what's different about yourfirm? DT: Litigation in all its aspects ismy speciality. Medicalnegligence, dentalnegligence, professionalnegligence of all kinds. A veryimportant attribute in thisprofession is an empathy withclients, an ability to put them atease. If you are a client of ours,we will do our damnedest foryou. If you have a problem whenyou come in here I canguarantee you that you willfeel less troubled leaving herethan you did coming in. Andan awful lot of lawyers can'toffer that. I have clients comingto me after having been withother lawyers... we get anawful lot of work from clientswho have gone down the roadto some extent with theirexisting lawyer and a cul desac has been arrived atwhereby they or their lawyerjust don't know where to gofrom here. So they come into usand we put some new orderon such things and re-configure the approach.CT: I come from a corporatelaw background. Typically herein Sligo, legal practitioners maynot have the same experienceof complex corporatetransactions andarrangements, so this issomething I'm bringing that willhopefully differentiate us in thatarea, to supplement the otherareas of law in which wespecialise... Every large corporation startsout as a smaller business. Sligohas many examples of perhapssmaller businesses that havethe potential to become muchlarger corporations.Companies like for exampleVoya and Good4You areleading the charge. Havingstrong corporate lawpractitioners available at locallevel is vital in supporting thesetypes of efforts.

The Fleadh isapproachingand with thatwill be a weekof Irish musicand festivitiesthat will seeSligo’s street

packed with a variety of foodand drink vendors. Some willbe healthier than others.Regardless of whether you'retrying to lose weight, you caneat healthy when dining out,if you know how. So, if you'retreating yourself to a meal outor having some street foodwhilst soaking up theatmosphere, here are sometips to help make it a diningexperience that is both tastyand good for you.

Keep your eye on portionsize: Many fast food andrestaurant meals deliverenough food for severalmeals in the disguise of asingle portion so try to bemindful when that plate orportion arrives.

Focus on grilled or roastedlean meats: Avoid fried andbreaded items such asbreaded chicken fillets.Choose chicken breast, leanham, or lean roast beef andgrilled burgers instead.

Pay attention to thedescriptions on the menu:Dishes labelled deep-fried,pan-fried, battered, breaded, creamy and crispy are usuallyhigh in calories, saturatedfats, and salt.

Don’t be afraid to ask for aspecial order: Many menuitems can be made healthierwith a few tweaks andsubstitutions. For example, you can ask to have sauce ordressing on the side or youcan request your burgerwithout the bun or wholegrainbread for your sandwich.

Don't assume that healthy-sounding dishes are alwaysyour best option:

For example, many fast foodsalads are a diet disaster, smothered in high-fatdressing.

Be careful when it comes todressings and condiments:When choosing items, beaware of calorie and fatpacked salad dressings, spreads and sauces.Mayonnaise and oil basedsauces in particular add a lotof calories. Try having your sandwichwithout mayonnaise or use alight alternative if possible.

Be wise about drink choices:Soft drinks are a huge source

of hidden calories and sugar.Don’t be fooled byconcentrated fruit juices, which add calories and sugarwithout much in the way ofnutrients. Stick to low caloriemixers or water and a slice offresh lime or lemon.A healthy lifestyle is all aboutbalance so enjoy thecelebrations and if eating inor out try to make thehealthier choices!!

Tasty tip: Try infusing yourwater with refreshing flavourslike fresh mint leaves or slicesof cucumber or lemon torefresh and hydrate after thenight before!

Q. How do I achieve the look offresh dewy looking skin?LisaI love the dewy complexion andthere are many products that canhelp you achieve this but the keyto fresh dewy skin is hydration. Sostart by increasing your intake ofwater and then implement a reallygood skin care routine. Exfoliateonce a week and use a hydrationmask and good moisturiser andhydrating serum. Mix CharlotteTilbury Wonder glow or Mac strobecream with your foundation togive that bright dewy look all over.Remember that a light consistencyfoundation or a tinted moisturisewill give a better effect. Highlightthe upper cheek bones, under thehighest point of the brows anddown the bridge of your nose tofinish the look.

Q. What is your favouritefoundation? - AimeeArmani Luminous Silk all the way. It’s a light to medium coveragefoundation and I use it on myselfand for all my clients. I love theway it beautifully enhances theskin rather than masking it andthey have a really wide range ofshades suitable for all skin tones.

Thevenue is unique in the senseyour literally standing inamongst the band feelingevery note and symbol crashwith a smooth rockin' vibe.We also offer promotions onthe night to help make itaffordable for all.

O'Neills was a wellestablished student bar priorto this re-vamp, how has thattransition been? The transition as been steadyand on the up. We have aregular crew of locals duringthe week. And t theweekends we also have thesupport of local musiciansand music lovers helpingpromote the gigs by word ofmouth and simply by comingto see and enjoy the music. To anyone who hasn't visitedthe place yet, pop the headin for a look.

Isn't Rock 'n' Roll dead? Rock n Roll lives in us all. In myopinion, the rifts and grooves, and the structure of rock nroll exists in a lot of genres of

music, being the backboneto most. From young to old,try not to automaticallywhistle to that infectiousanthem while your foot tapsunknown to yourself. "Music isa universal language " It's asweet healthy addiction wecan all enjoy...Rock n Roll isimmortal! What have been the standout best gigs so far? Each gig has been a standout gig in its own unique way.All bands have rocked outpassionately singing andplaying for their love of music. So for us, when a band playsfrom the heart, whether it's to30 or 300, it's a stand out gig.Don't ya just love watchingbands enjoying what theydo?

Any plans to get BIGheadliners in? Who wouldyour dream line up be for aspecial event? We have some big bands inthe pipeline, some summerfestival music in our largebeer garden to come. Lots offresh new local bands to bereleased which can only bemassive boost for the musicscene in Sligo. Our dream line up would beto have all Sligo musiciansunder one roof mixing andmashing up, playing off thecuff together. Could take afew days to finish though, because there's so muchtalent in the town.

How can Sligo's fans of rockmusic support this venture?Anyone with a love of musicand rock can support us,simply by coming andspreading the word of actsthat may be playing. Also bysupporting Sligo bandswherever they play, becausewithout that support it's hardfor bands to keep going .

Mick Flannery

Beneath and beyond thebeautifully understated, uncomplicated anduncluttered production on “Bythe Rule”, Flannery’s songs usherus into a world which is by timesemotional, romantic, dark, insightful and hopeful. Listenback to Mick Flannery onSunday With Miriam“In the end of the day and the heel of the hunt, you’re leftwith the songs. Everything else comes and goes – theshows and the tours and the applause and the acclaimwhich goes with them, the prattle and the palaver whichaccompany an album release. Everything else fades outof view. Everything else doesn’t matter in the long run. Butthe songs remain. The songs you write on your own stickaround. They’re going to be here for many years to comeso they deserve to be treated with due care and utmostrespect in the creation process.” Mick Flannery realisedthis a long time ago. He also realised that songwriting wasthe best part of this strange job of being a jobbing-gigging-talking-singing musician. “It’s never a chore”,Flannery says about the craft. “The creation is the nicestpart, it’s something you always have and you can use it towork through stuff that’s in your head. You have to take itseriously if it’s going to be any good. It’s always myfavourite thing, like putting Lego blocks together. You canmake a lot of things with Lego.” You can make an albumlike “By the Rule”, for instance. It’s Flannery’s fourth albumbut it’s a world on from anything he has put his name tobefore now.

In 1975, in afield inAnnaghmor

e, a small gangof flyingenthusiasts got

together and formed Sligo’sfirst (and only) Aero Club.Forty years later, KateWinter meets one of thosefounder members, GerryO’Hara, along with his long-term flying companionsand fellow members BenHealy and John Curran, toget just a few of the storiesso far.

How this club cameabout is just one of thosemany stories, told withenthusiasm and the sparkof happy memories in eachof these men’s eyes. Gerryrelates how he trained inIona in Dublin, beforecoming closer to home, toCastlebar, to continue hispractice.

“There were a fewpeople from Sligo flying inCastlebar. After flying we’dget around the bar andhave a pint and a chatand some started to say‘Wouldn’t it be nice to havea club in Sligo?’ and thatwas the seed of it. Then weleased a suitable field inAnnaghmore, we boughtan old second hand planeand we were set to go. Webuilt a hangar to house theplane and bought an oldbus, which we towed outthere to be the clubhouse. It was a humble beginningbut nonetheless, that’s howwe got started.”

In fact, it was the grassstrip that they created atthe site in Strandhill, whenthey moved fromAnnaghmore in 1979, thatdrew the attention of localauthorities, particularly afterthe tragic murder of LordMountbatten atMullaghmore brought theworld press flying in to thesmall strip in force. With thehelp of Sligo CountyCouncil, Sligo Corporationand EEC funding, SligoAirport was functioningwithin a few years. It was agreat new era for the club, who were very muchinvolved in the project fromthe start. As Ben Healy tellsit,

“We’ve always got onvery well with the airportside of things. When theairport came in, it all gotmuch more professional. We were delighted, we gota full length, hard-pavedrunway, lights, air trafficcontrol, a tower, everythingwe needed.”

All three of the gents hereto tell tales of their beloved

Aero Club, on this, thefortieth anniversary of itsformation, have beenpassionate about airplanesand flying for as long asthey can recall. Gerry wasfanatical about buildingmodel airplanes as a youngboy, shunning the usualantics of his peers to go offfor hours alone, learning thephysics of flying andmarvelling in the magic ofmaking such machines. Hewent on to become a manwhose full-scale machineshave been admired andappreciated the worldover, and still has bits andpieces of his first everattempt stored away.

Ben just wanted to find hiswings from a young age. Ashe says, “I find it difficult tounderstand why somebodywouldn’t want to learn tofly”, going on to explain,

“It was more of a hobbyin our days, it was arecreational thing.Nowadays most peoplewho come to us are eitherinterested in a one-offexperience, or they areplanning on becoming aprofessional pilot. It’schanged in that way... Inever had aspirations tobeing a professional pilot oranything like that, it was justsomething I always wantedto do. It’s a greatachievement, it’s differentand it’s immenselysatisfying.”

John Curran, however, did have his heart set on acareer in the cockpit, applying for a covetedpilot’s position at Aer Lingusback in the 80s. He justmissed the cut, which is notentirely surprising when oneconsiders that back in thosedays, there were at leastten thousand young menapplying for each of thosejobs. Instead, John found away to keep busy in the airin an alternative manner, becoming an instructor. Hesays,

“My abiding memory offlying will always be of thepeople I have trained.Seeing the look on a sixteenyear old’s face whenthey’ve just landed backfrom their first solo, there’snothing like that... andplenty of students who’vecome through this aeroclub have gone through toother flying schools and onto become pilots with someof the big airlines.”

These days the threeintrepid Aero Club pilots arededicated to bringingsome fresh blood into thegroup. The days when itwas a common

gentleman’s past-timehave unfortunately passed, and as John says, “therearen’t enough young folkscoming along and gettinginvolved at the moment,we have an aging cohortdown here!”.

One way of bringing theyounger generationthrough the doors wouldperhaps be to re-instate anold institution, the stuff oflegends, the huge fly-insthat used to take placearound the country. Aircraftenthusiasts from near andfar would “fly in” towhatever club was hosting, and spend a fabulous dayand evening “kicking tyres, discussing flights, watchingthe planes, dancing, socialising, eating anddrinking”. Ben recalls thesedays fondly:

“For me, the big fly-ins inthe 80s were just great. Wehad maybe forty visitingairplanes and people fromall over Europe. Big parties, tremendous enthusiasm, itwas wonderful. I rememberone big air display that hadpeople lined up all the wayup the mountain, thousands of peoplewatching.”

Asked if they might host afly-in for the 40th anniversarycelebrations, all that isforthcoming from the threemen is a “maybe”, thoughJohn does elaboratesomewhat cryptically,“Well, maybe the youngfolk should get involved inthe organisation of such athing...”

Among stories of daringmaiden flights of handbuiltcraft, thrilling crashes andnear misses, adrenaline andjoy, Gerry gives the perfectexplanation of why onewould choose to climb intothe cockpit of one of thesesmall, pretty, old-schoolplanes and fly highoverhead.

“There’s something veryspecial about being up inthe air looking down at allthe fields and the horizonstretching to infinity, thepanorama is fantastic. Youcan see cities far away andlittle villages look like toy-towns below. It’s a lot morepicturesque than the realityclose up.”

And with the potential oftaking your first solo flightafter only 10 hours ofinstruction at Sligo AeroClub, one has to agree withBen. Why wouldn’t youwant to learn to fly?Find Sligo Aero Club onFacebook or look up theirwebsite atwww.sligoaeroclub.com

It’s that time of the yearagain. The days are gettinglonger, gardens are starting

to explode with colour, andRTE Supergarden is back onthe television. The populargarden show which is in it’sseventh series and follows thejourney of five amateurgarden designers who havefive weeks to create a gardenfor a real client with a budgetof €5000. Competing for thewinning garden, their aim is tore-create their space for theBloom in the Park festival inthe Pheonix Park on the Junebank holiday weekend andshow their garden to 110,000people.

This is my second year tomentor the designers on theshow and it is a challengingand yet incredibly rewardingexperience.

Being on this side of theprocess is very different tobeing a contestant and myfirst brush with the show was in2012. I had just finishedstudying garden design inLondon and was a little unsureof how to best make people

aware of my new designbusiness. After seeing theshow mentioned on twitter Imade a spur of the momentdecision to apply and fourdays and three interviewslater I was accepted andintroduced to my clients inSligo.

The journey of creating aSupergarden is a trulypersonal one. Not only areyou trying to create afunctional and beautifulgarden for a real client, youare also trying to create agarden that will stand up tothe Showgarden test. On topof that you have the addedstrain of having every movefilmed which can beincredibly daunting, especially when you makemistakes...and everyone does. It’s your business beingshowcased to a massiveaudience on primetime TV! Icreated a garden for theFlynn family in Tonaphubbleand I’ll never forget theprocess and of course beingtold I was the winner. For me itwas a start into the world of TV

and showgardens, both ofwhich I absolutely love doing.

Now as a mentor my aim inthe show is really to empowerthe designers to make theright decisions themselves. There is a fine line betweentrying to help a designerachieve their design goalsand making decisions forthem which is not helpful atall. I try and point them in theright directions for theirdesigns and as a mentor I liketo think I am in a supportiverole. One thing I have learnedover the years is that it is easyto lose yourself in the designprocess and thus makeuninformed decisions. It isinvaluable for me now morethan ever to run things bypeople I respect and trust. Thebest way to make a gooddecision is: do your research, listen to advice from othersand then go design with yourinstinct!

From sophisticatedpermaculture design to strongformal shapes and boldcolours, this year sees afascinating mix of characters

and design styles in the show. Many different approachesshine through in the gardens, highlighting the differenttastes and personalities of thedesigners.

I love working with them alland feel privileged to beallowed to be a part of theirprocess to creating somethinggreat. The aim is of course tocreate a well functioning, customised garden that feelsbeautiful to walk into. It mustwork for the client and theirevery day lives and ideally theclient becomes a part of thedesign. The designer willalways have challenges andthings always go wrong-that’sall part of design-and goodtelevision of course! What isreally at the core of it all istrying to find thatindescribable alchemy ofgood spatial awareness, strong planting, sympatheticdesign and unique character. That little bit of magic thatmakes a garden more thanjust a garden. Meet the contestants over the page...

Grace McCullen

Grace works in marketing and her approach to her clients garden is to treat it like abrand. She certainly runs a tight ship and her progress in the first few weeks wasastounding! Her garden features a very sweet living Twig-wam which aims to give the

homeowner’s kids a little play area out the back of the garden. Grace’s love for natureshowed through in our talks and she told me she spends a lot of time out in her own gardenand she grows her own food. Grace’s concept is called ‘Serendipity’ and her aim is tocreate a garden that has many hidden surprises and elements.

Meet the contestants

Floris Wagemaker

This man’s passion is food. Whether making for his ownbusiness it or growing it in his own garden, he ap-proaches both with the same attention to detail and

dedication. When I first met Floris and heard his ideas forthe garden I was fascinated by the idea that this gardenwould bring the feeling of holidaying to the homeowners. His aim is to create a garden that has flowing terracottawalls, a bounty of edible fruit and herbs and a uniquetensile structure. I love the idea of olive trees in this walledgarden. A very strong design with a lot of spirit Floris aimsto bring little bit of the Mediterranean to Tuam!

Zaneta Olzowy

Zaneta grew up in Poland andnow studies Landscape design inDublin. When I first saw her

drawings and ideas I wasimmediately excited by her concept. Her strong connection to the clientand the homeowners interior style isa great starting point for a design. The concept of ‘In Love’ was a verypretty one. I am really lookingforward to how she makes thisconcept come to life through hardlandscaping and especially planting!

Brian Burke

Brian’s garden has an added challenge in it. Thehomeowners youngest son suffers from spina bifida and thegarden has been virtually inaccessible for him in the past.

Brian aims to change this and create a garden based around hisand the whole family’s needs. One of the exciting things aboutthis garden is the colour choices Brian is making. He is certainlybeing bold in combining colours and this is a strongrepresentation of the fun family garden that he wants to create.

Suzie Cahn

Suzie has a wealth of knowledge in permaculture. Infact, she teaches permaculture to adults. For me itwas fascinating to delve into the theories behind this

approach to living. Suzie says that her concept is aboutunderstanding nature and applying it to anythingdesigned by humans and the last time I saw this gardenSuzie was creating fascinating, and beautiful areas (orzones) of interest in the garden, each with it’s own uniquecharacteristics. It sounds like it will be fun filled garden witha very strong concept and beautiful planting.

The winner can be seen Bloom in the Park 2015 is on the Bank holiday weekend 28th of May -1st June. Don’t miss Supergarden every Tuesday on RTE1 at 8.30pm Supergarden is sponsored by Woodies and Cuprinol.

KieranGorman sitssipping his

pint in a local pubin Dromahair, wearing wellies

and chatting with somelocals. He may have raised afew eyebrows when he firstarrived in the village, complete with "a shock of BillyIdol bleach blonde hair" in anold purple Mercedes with

number plates reading 'CEX',but these days, he fits in a littlebetter. They know he's amusician, a bit of an enigma, away travelling and recordingregularly, but they may not becompletely aware of theextent to which Kieran leads adouble life. His alter ego, Perry Blake, is

a hugely popular artist inFrance and several otherEuropean countries, where he

has enjoyed both commercialsuccess and critical acclaim. From the early days of hiscareer, when some of thebiggest players in the musicindustry engaged in a biddingwar to sign the young artistwho garnered instantcomparisons to legendarypop star David Bowie, throughseveral reinventions and to hismost recent endeavours withelectronic synth pop, the PerryBlake persona is a million milesfrom quiet Sligo man, Kieran. And yet, they are one and thesame. "It's very odd." He says, of

the duality in his life that hehas had to grow accustomedto. "Sometimes I wonder, whenI've been home a while, if itwas all a dream. If that reallyis my other life. It's peculiar."Perry was first signed to

Polydor in the late 90s, afterspending several years livingand gigging in London andDublin. Much as he loved thebeautiful landscape of hishome county of Sligo, duringthe era he grew up in, theresimply wasn't enough glamourto satisfy his artistic soul in thesmall town, sending himseeking adventure in the city.Having had a passion for

music and singing since hewas a child, Perry recalls hisfirst memory of the magic ofthe medium vividly:

"I was in my dad's car, wewere like the Brady bunchwithout the canned laughter, driving along in the familystation wagon. I was aboutfive or six and we were closeto Mullaghmore and Iremember hearing DionneWarwick's Do You Know TheWay To San Jose? playing onthe radio and that was just it,for me. It affected me in away that's hard to explain..."

It was a sudden leap tostardom for the youngperformer, signing with a biglabel and flying to the UK tostart work on his criticallyacclaimed first album, andone which he relished. Thefuture was looking bright, withimmediately positiveresponses from UK radio andpress and a great buzzbuilding in industry circles.Perry Blake was set to be thenext big thing. But, as the fates would have

it, this blossoming career

coincided with big shake-upsat the top end of the recordcompanies in charge. Polydorgot taken over by Seagram, who in turn got swallowed upby Universal, and everythingchanged for thousands ofartists, including Perry Blake.Without the Polydor

machine behind him, the UKand home market becameless accessible to the up andcoming star, but it becameapparent that the moody andmelodic stylings of Perry'sdebut album had piquedinterest in France, where hewas already garnering quite acult following. No wonderthen that hot new Frenchlabel, Naive, picked up wherePolydor left off and signed therising star.

Second album, "Still Life"further developed Perry'sreputation as a force to bereckoned with, spreading hisappeal throughout thecontinent, but barelytouching the fringes of the UKand Ireland. Sell out tours, collaborations with hugeEuropean stars of stage andscreen (such as Carla Bruneiand Francoise Hardy) andmassive exposure in themedia meant that Perry wasbecoming an icon, recognisable everywhere hewent, except at home. He hasin the past expressedfrustration at the attitudes ofsome Irish musicians, who attimes treated him like "somekind of outsider", despite thefact that he has graced thecovers and pages of suchrecognised internationalpublications as Hot Press, TheFrench Rolling Stone, and TheSunday Times, as well asplaying some of the biggestvenues in Europe.Leaving the Naive label in

2004, Perry continued with hisstring of successes, starting his

own label and releasing anew album which achievedthe highest yet placing in theFrench charts, peaking at #5.But his heart was set ondeveloping his craft, continuing to move forwards. The acclaim kept coming, and he endeavoured to keephis work fresh, but it was achallenge. "The last record, in 2006, did

very well. It got amazingreviews and I toured itextensively. But I just didn'twant to keep repeatingmyself. A lot of bands keepmaking the same record overand over - they're goodrecords, but too much of thesame thing."And so a long break

followed, during which, among other experiments, herecorded an ill-judged (butpersonally fulfilling) countryalbum. Explaining himself,Perry says good-naturedly,"I accidentally made a

country album. I listened toLeonard Cohen doing aninterview and he said'Everyone has to release acountry album just once' so Itook him seriously and spent ahuge amount of moneyrecording this new album. Iactually got laughed at byWarner. Considering theFrench hate country music, it'snot really surprising. It was alittle foolish, sort ofcommercial suicide."Dabbling in screenwriting,

writing a children's book, developing and composingsongs for other artists, experimenting with his abidinglove for old school electronicsynth pop with his long-termcollaborative partner, fellowSligo man Glenn Garrett, writing his autobiography andkeeping the creative firesstoked has kept Perry busyover the past eight years, since he took a step backfrom the limelight, but earlierthis year the time suddenlyseemed right to release a newPerry Blake single, Fool. "I wasn't sure I'd ever put out

another Perry record. Thereaction to Fool has beengood, though. It was actuallywritten ten years ago for

somebody else... I found itagain about 8 weeks ago, going through some CDs... Were-recorded it, got it mixed inDublin and it was ready withina week."Bringing some of the fresh,

vibrant sound of ElectroSensitive Behaviour (ESB - thesynth pop vehicle formed withGarrett in 2012) into the latestsingle, yet maintaining anessential element of themelancholic darkness ofclassic Perry Blake, hedescribes this latest offering as"a good bridge between thetwo", suggesting there will befurther merging down theESB/Perry Blake road. While hehas toured extensively andplayed gigs in some of thelargest and most esteemedvenues around Europe, Perryadmits he looks forward tohaving a bit more fun onstagewith this, his latest live venture.

"Glen and I started ESBmostly to brush away thecobwebs a bit. With the Perrystuff, it's like doing Hamletevery night. It's very intenseand rewarding, but very

draining. I wanted to dosomething that was a littlemore fun to show that side ofwhat I'm about."The pair have recently

recorded and released analbum, Modern Love, whichhas been receiving greatkudos from the likes of DanHegarty (2FM) and othermusical commentatorsaround the UK and Ireland. They will be playing severalfestivals nationally over thesummer, with plans to releasea single in the coming monthsto whet the appetites of fansof the genre and newcomersalike. As Perry points out,Electro synth pop never reallywent away since its heydayback in the 80s, merely goingsomewhat underground for awhile. Now it appears the timeis right for a revival, with thesynth-heavy soundtrack forrecent hit Hollywood movieDrive playing a large part inthe sudden resurgence.Other plans for the future

include finishing theautobiography, which isintriguingly "constructed like apop song", building on the ESBproject, delivering amasterclass in songwriting atThe Dock in Carrick OnShannon on the 23rd of May(sponsored by HarnessingCreativity) and potentiallyeven gigging around Sligo atsome point. And wouldn't that be a treat?

"A fine songwriter with agreat voice. A little Blakegoes a long way." - The Sunday Times

Wine& It’s true that lamb is one ofthe most wine-friendly ofmeats, as at home with

red Bordeaux and Rioja as itis with the more fruit drivenvarietals from the newworld. But if you’re lookingfor a spot-on match it’sworth thinking just how -and for how long - you’regoing to cook it.And, though you might nothave thought about it be-fore, how old it is.'Baby/milk fed’ lamb A

delicacy more popular inMediterranean countriessuch as Spain, Italy andsouth-west France than inIreland and one that de-serves to be paired with finewines - top quality Bor-deaux, burgundy and Rioja, all with a few years' bottleage. (Mature wines go wellwith this style of lamb)Spring lamb served pink

with fresh herbs and/orspring vegetables Cuts likerack of lamb, noisettes andleg of lamb - exactly thesort of dishes you might bethinking about for an Easterfeast (unless you’re living inthe southern hemisphere, ofcourse). Again, the winesmentioned above will workwell but I’ve got a bias infavour of Pinot Noir or cruBeaujolais with this type ofdish. Dry rosé, especially vin-tage rosé Champagne, isalso good.Roast lamb served

medium-rare to well-done,with garlic or rosemaryand/or a winey sauce orgravy The way many house-holds would prepare a legof lamb for a multi-genera-tional family get-together.This is more robust treatmentthan the above whichwould work better with ayounger, more fruit-drivenwine such as a younger redBordeaux, Cabernet orCabernet/Merlot blend, aRioja reserva, a Chianti

Classico or a northernRhône red. (The same goesfor lamb shanks cooked inred wine.)Slow-roast shoulder of

lamb A fattier, more flavour-ful dish, especially if madewith older lamb such ashoggett or mutton. A slightlygamey Rhône or Spanishred such as a Ribera delDuero is a good choicewith this.Typically Irish lamb stews

and hotpots, shepherd’spie The characteristic ofthese types of dishes is theirvery simple flavours - sweet-tasting lamb, stock and afew root vegetables withmaybe a sprig of thyme orbay. Big tannic reds willoverwhelm them - stick toinexpensive country redssuch as a Côtes du RhôneVillages. (Or, frankly, a paleale.)More exotic lamb stews

such as tagines or lambwith aubergines Robust, rus-tic but not overly tannicreds such as Côtes du Rous-sillon, Languedoc reds andyoung (crianza) Riojas.Lamb curries such as

rogan josh A fruity, slightlyporty red such as a Dourored or Zinfandel shouldwork provided the accom-panying dishes aren’t toohot. India Pale Ales (IPAs)are also good.Chargrilled/barbecued

lamb Depends on the rubor marinade. If it’s spicyyou’ll need a wine withsome sweet fruit like aChilean Cabernet, Pino-tage or an Australian Shiraz. If it’s marinated, Greek-style, with lemon and herbslook for a wine with a bitless fruit and a bit moreacidity. (Italian reds such asChianti and Barbera fit thisdescription. Crisp Greekwhites like Assyrtiko andstrong dry rosés are also en-joyable)

A Simple Hair Care Reg Hair is the most important feature of your face as it cancompletely change your look. Taking care of your hair isessential if you want it to look great always!

Choose the right shampooLook for a good-quality sham-poo, preferably which is freeof sulphate and paraben. Picka shampoo that suits your hairtype and is mild on your scalp.Focus on cleansing the scalpfirst by gently rubbing in circu-lar motions with your fingertips. Don’t rub too muchshampoo on your ends as itcan cause dryness and split-ends.

Brushing basicsBrush your hair in the morningas brushing helps remove dust, dirt and loose scales. It alsostimulates the blood supplyand distributes sebum alongthe hair shaft. Always start atthe ends and gently work yourway towards the roots. Brushyour hair before hitting thebed too. Avoid combing yourhair when wet as it can leadto breakage.

Use a conditionerAlways apply a conditionerafter shampooing your hair.Make sure you apply theproduct only on your hair endsand not the scalp. You coulduse a wide-tooth comb towork the conditioner throughas this give better coverage.Use a creamy formula forshiny & smooth locks.

Invest in a good haircutIt’s always a good idea to in-vest in a fine haircut. Opt for acut that is easy to manageand style. The ‘wash andwear’ styles work best if you’rebusy and always on themove.

Eat rightDon’t tie your hair too tight es-pecially when it is wet as thiscould cause your hair tobreak and split. Eat foods thatare rich in zinc and essential

A Simple Hair Care Regime for Beautiful Hairfatty acids. Diet plays an im-portant role in maintaininghealthy hair. Also, don’t over-style as it could damage yourhair and make it dry.

Secrets of Healthy, Beautiful,Easy-to-manage HairFor the majority of people, there are plenty of things youcan do to protect, nourishand enjoy your hair. Below arethe top ten secrets of beautifulhair: Trim your hair at leastevery 6-8 weeks (more often ifyour hair is short). Damage toyour hair is usually from theends and the only long-termsolution to split ends is to re-move them. Also, hairs growat different rates, so haircutswill keep your hair healthy andyour style balanced.Work with your hairdresser todetermine the shampoo andconditioner best suited to yourhair and scalp and avoidwashing your hair every day.Shampooing every third day isideal for most people as thenatural oil that your scalp pro-duces is nature’s way to con-dition your hair. When shampooing your hairat home, massage your scalpgently to boost your circula-tion and improve overall hairhealth. Use cooler water, which will keep your hair’s cu-ticle closed.Let your hair dry naturallywhen possible and rather thanrubbing your hair dry; blot yourhair to remove most of thewater. If you have longer hairuse a wide-tooth comb togently comb out any tanglesand never use a brush on wethair.Avoid using hair-dryers, flat

irons or curling irons when pos-sible and always use a ther-mal protectant when you douse these tools. If you use a round brush tostyle your hair, a natural boarbristle brush is best and it willhelp straighten your hair andadd shine.Use styling products designedfor your hair type to addressyour needs. Your hairdressercan help you with this.Avoid heat and prolonged ex-posure to sunlight, sea wateror swimming pools, as each isharmful to your hair. If you areregularly in the sun or the pool, use protective products priorto each. You don’t need to avoid haircolour or highlights, but haveyour hair coloured by special-ists to give you the look youdesire without unduly damag-ing your hair. Above all, find astylist you trust and check inregularly to have your hairtrimmed and to discuss yourchanging needs. And enjoyyour beautiful hair!

Distance: Unlimited. Takea short stroll around thewalled gardens andexplore the house andexhibitions in all theirhistorical glory, orramble throughwoodlands and alongthe strand until your legsache and your heartswells with the beauty ofthe landscape.

Difficulty Level: Piece of cake. And you can actuallyhave a piece of cake at the end of your walk, in thebeautiful and tastily stocked tearoom.Directions: Drive out past Drumcliffe and turn rightthrough Carney. Follow the signs for Lissadell House andGardens. Don’t forget, this is a family home, which isopen between 10.30 and 6pm from May to Octoberonly. And you’ll need to buy a ticket to access theirestate, so make a day of it and enjoy every moment.Description: Lissadell House and Gardens offersomething for everyone. The summer months are sucha perfect time to visit, with the stunning Alpine Gardenin full bloom and the light reflecting over the length ofLissadell strand, Benbulben dappled in sunshine in thedistance. The property stood falling into disrepair formany years, and then spent another long periodclosed to the public, so it’s a blessing to have it openand welcoming visitors again, under the warmlywatchful eyes of owners Constance Cassidy and EddieWalsh. One truly can get lost in the woods, wanderalong beside bubbling streams, admire the house froma distance, up close and even from inside on one ofthe hugely informative and interesting tours... Optionsare endless. If you’re lucky, someone will be mowingthe vast expanse of lawn and spreading the addictivescent of fresh cut grass. Deeper along wooded lanes, fragrances of moist earth and wild garlic abound andthe only sounds are birdsong and the crunch of twigsunderfoot. There’s a late 18th century ice house hiddenin the bushes along the way, and plenty of prettywrought iron benches dotted about the grounds topause, rest and take in the country air. The LeonardCohen and Westlife concerts that took place here in2010 have gone down in local history and there arerumours of more to come. Family fun days (like thewonderful EasterEgg hunt in April)pop up now andthen and drawgreat crowds tothe lovinglymaintainedgrounds. LissadellHouse is openagain and wellworth a visitsome finesummer day.

Wonderful Walks inCounty Sligo

Budgets. I never liked the damnthings. But since becoming a freewoman, kicking the day job to thecurb and embarking on myfreelance career, it’s a skill I’ve hadto acquire. Or rather, begin toattempt to try to learn about just alittle bit. I haven’t really got the hangof it yet, which is causing lots oftrouble with numbers and minussigns and dates and the rest. Butsure, it’ll be grand...After a rather busy and productivemonth of March, I decided I neededa little break. A holiday that I couldabsolutely NOT afford. So I wrangleda deal with myself (A nice longconversation with my higher andbaser selves, where the instant-gratification monkey won out byscreaming incessantly “BUT I WANTTO!” in the face of any rationalargument) whereby I would escapeIreland for a few days of sunshine.Thankfully, I have a friend who livesin Spain, so my accommodationwas sorted. Though I was wary ofexactly what kind ofaccommodation, especially whenhe mentioned spraying a sleepingbag with some Lynx Africa by way ofhospitality. Beggars can’t bechoosers, eh?With several cheap planes, trainsand automobiles readily availableonline I was able to navigate myway from Sligo in the dead of nightto Granada in the bleary hours ofmid-morning relatively cheaply. Dayone was mostly travelling. And sowas day five. But in the middle, I hada potential three days of doingabsolutely nothing, which is exactlywhat I wanted. And as I askedmyself en route, several times, whenthe bouncy, springy zeroes in mybank balance flashed before myinsomniac eyes: How expensive canit be, to do nothing in Spain?Upon arrival I was deliriously happyto discover that rather than beingon a couch in the communal roomof an Erasmus student flat, I actuallyhad my own bedroom, with a small, comfy bed and even a littlebalcony. Go budget! I had toexpress my gratitude by buyingdinner. And after a few glasses ofsangria generosity got the better ofwisdom and resolve and the instant-gratification monkey was back, shrieking “NO budget!”. So far, not sogood. In Granada, almost every bar servesa free tapa with every drink. Anddrinks are pretty cheap, with winecoming in at around €3 and beer €2.So I would be forgiven for thinkingthis was going to be budget gold forthe trip. While the boys workedduring the day, I tripped merrily fromone establishment to another, collecting my free nibbles and

getting gradually more crooked asthe hours wore on. Because, as Idiscovered, tapas are tiny and drinksare large and it’s near impossible toactually fill yourself up with thismethod of dining. I thoroughlyenjoyed the adventure, but endedup stocious drunk, having an earlynight after inadvertently spendingthe entirety of that day’s allocatedfunds plus half of the next on booze. There follows a list of similar reasonswhy I’m terrible at budgeting andhow this holiday proved that.I can’t drink tap water. The metallic, dirty taste of it makes me gag. Andmineral water is more expensivethan beer in Spain, while hydration inthe heat is even more important.I like pretty things. Although I didamazingly well on this count, simplythrough necessity. I didn’t buy asingle gift or keepsake or article ofglorious clothing (oh, but the shops!Granada is a stylish city)despitebeing tempted at every turn.I prefer taxis to walking and buses. No brainer. Though I did keep taxisto a minimum and got lots of lovelyexercise clambering up steepcobbled streets into the hills ofSacromonte (needed plenty ofwater for that hike though). Walkingabout and exploring the many tiny, windy alleys and the vast andimposing presence of the Alhambrawas actually the best and cheapestway to spend my days, though myleg muscles did cramp upsomething serious.I want to do everything and thatvery much includes all the usualpricey tourist traps. This time round, Iescaped mostly unscathed, notdoing any tours or paying the €20 tovisit the Alhambra, rather lurkingaround the bottom of the cliffs it sitson and almost getting mugged bysome scrawny, giggly teenagegypsies. The one expense I did submit to wasa visit to the Moorish baths. Comeon, I deserved it, I had denied myselfon so many other levels! I looked upa few and went for the cheapest, which was definitely a mistake. Aunique experience, but a mistake, without a shadow of a doubt. Thiswas not a relaxing spa experience. This was a mass bathing experiencewith every sweaty tourist who coulddrag their dirty feet up a flight ofstairs and straight into the tub. I wasalmost drowned by a largeAmerican man’s tsunami ofdisplacement water. And when I gothome, my lovely friend hugged meand said “Oh my God, you STINK.”So, the moral of the story is; if you’renot good at budgets, you probablyshouldn’t go on holidays. And ifyou’re going to ‘treat’ yourself, never choose the cheapest option.
