Modern Campus The Institute is located on a 72-acre campus in Sligo. It includes the new €17 million MacMunn Science Building (named after local scientist Charles MacMunn), which opened September 2014. This facility is also home to a 600-seater restaurant. Add to that, the Institute’s three-floor Yeats Library and enhanced sports facilities at the Knocknarea Arena and you have a 21st century campus which offers a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

IT Sligo simply doesn’t do ‘all work, no play’Sports FacilitiesMuch of the Institute’s sporting activity happens around the Knocknarea Arena. It houses our gym and the main sports hall for basketball, five-a-side and other indoor court sports.

It includes:

- 3G astro pitch used for soccer/GAA training, plus internal college tournaments and recreational sport

- Floodlit championship-standard playing pitches for Gaelic games, soccer and rugby

- An all-weather running track with facilities for track and field athletics

- Hi-spec training pitches

- Sports hall for indoor sports that is large enough to accommodate two full five-a-side pitches or two basketball courts. The indoor arena is used for concerts and other performances

- Fully-equipped fitness suite, with a full range of high-quality aerobic and resistance equipment, including free weights

- Multi-purpose suite with a wooden floor and wall mirrors to facilitate fitness classes e.g. yoga, pilates, martial arts and dance classes

- Food and beverage canteen with a viewing balcony over the athletics arena and playing pitches.

Sports ScholarshipsWe offer a Sports Scholarship Scheme to help talented student athletes to reach their potential. We support them to become the best they can possibly be, allowing them to compete at the highest possible level. If you think you may qualify, we welcome your application.

We are proactive in encouraging a healthy and balanced lifestyle among all our students through involvement in sport.

Every year, we award scholarships and bursaries for the coming academic year. The highest possible level, our Gold Scholarship Award, is €1,750. The closing date for scholarship applications is the end of September each year.

Clubs and SocietiesPlaying sport or trying something new is an important part of college life.

IT Sligo currently has more than 60 active clubs and societies, with new ones starting up all the time. Get involved, sign up, be a part of it.

The Institute has a proven track record of sporting success in athletics, gaelic football, men’s and women’s soccer, surfing and kickboxing.

It’s not all about sport of course. There are plenty of other societies to get involved with, including the Environmental Society, which was named Society of the Year in 2015. Our clubs and societies organise many events that contribute to a vibrant social scene throughout the year.

Research Options

A postgraduate research degree (Research Masters or PhD) is different to a taught course in a number of ways:

- The primary mode of learning is self-learning

- There is no formal course work

- The student is responsible for carrying out the required work to the appropriate standard within the appropriate timeframe

- A supervisor is appointed by the Institute to guide the student in developing and carrying out the project.

An added advantage of this learning mode, beyond achieving Level 9 or 10 knowledge and skills, is that the student develops and proves their ability to work alone or in groups, to take responsibility for leading and initiating work, and to self-evaluate and manage their own academic and professional development. These skills are valued highly in the workplace.

Another difference between taught and research degrees is that the student is involved in the design of their studies from the outset. Each research project is unique and involves a specific research question which the project is designed to answer in a structured way. This research question may come from a supervisor who has an existing research programme, and is developing the area further, or it may come from a student who wants to research a particular topic. In either case, before applying to register, the student and supervisor work together to develop a project plan that is built around an appropriate question, has a fitting plan of work required to answer the question, together with a suitable schedule within which to achieve the particular degree (a Masters is typically two years, a PhD is typically four years).

Registration can be processed at any time of the year. Each applicant’s learning background and current circumstances is unique and at all stages of the registration application process, the Research Office will assist the student and their supervisor on any queries they may have.

The process works like this: once the research question is decided upon and the project plan developed, registration is initiated by completing a standard form and submitting it to the Head of Research. The application is reviewed by an internal and external reviewer. If required, additional question/project development may be undertaken and once this is done, a recommendation is made to the Institute’s Research Committee. Work can begin when the application is approved and fees are paid.

Our Innovative Yeats LibraryYeats LibraryThe Yeats Library is situated centrally on campus. It is an innovative and exciting facility with many different spaces in which to learn. The first floor Quiet Zone is a traditional, silent library space with reference books and formal seating. The ground floor Infozone houses most of the lending collection and the library information desk, as well as photocopying and printing services. The lower ground floor is the Social Learning Zone, where you will go to work with your fellow students on joint projects. Here, you choose your seating from the variety of tables and informal furniture, and get brainstorming with your latest ideas. There are plenty of electrical sockets, network points and of course wifi should you need to go online. Alternatively, you can practice delivering presentations in one of the small sound-proof rooms located on all three levels.

Library Resources The Library holds 70,000+ print books and subscribes to 70,000+ electronic books and several thousand electronic journals. There are maps, reports and films on DVD. We provide an interlibrary loans service to allow you to request books from other college libraries. Library staff will provide information sessions on how to use the service and are available to answer specific queries throughout the year.

Online Learners Library services for online and distance learners are available through the website www.library.itsligo.ie Here, you can check the catalogue for books, renew loans, search electronic databases and request items from other libraries. The online help desk ensures that help is at hand for specific queries.

Programme Description:Social care practice is emerging as an evidence-based professional field for those who wish to work actively in the areas of social justice, social care and social policy. Ireland, among other countries, continues to face many social challenges in many areas. These include providing care for children and young people, developing a genuinely inclusive multicultural society, responding to ageing populations and addressing issues related to addiction, unemployment, family breakdown and social inequality. Social care practitioners work to address these challenges. Course Structure: Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to explore areas that allow them to critically understand the social world in which we live. MA in Leadership in Early Childhood Care & EducationProgramme Description:Ireland’s early years sector has a dynamic, exciting and challenging future. It needs effective and confident leaders across the fields of practice, policy, advocacy, regulation, education and professional development.

The programme is structured around two modules each semester (Semester 1 runs from September to January; Semester 2 from January to May). You will be engaged in content that will include online lectures (six per module) from lecturers and key leaders and experts in the field; online discussions and activities; access to digital resources; and share your own experiences. Each semester there will be a residential school that brings you together with your fellow participants, academic staff and leading figures in the early years sector. Programme Description:This innovative course was created by the School of Engineering and Design and the School of Science in order to address the scarcity of environmental engineers in Ireland. Environmental Engineering is about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live. Environmental Engineers design, build and maintain clean water supplies and wastewater treatment systems and waste disposal methods, as well as hydroelectric stations and wind farms.

Course Structure: The course is a blend of formal lectures and practical classes. Programme Description:Quantity surveying is all about the cost management of construction projects. Programme Description:This course takes a software engineering approach to games development, combining the study of the technical aspects of games programming with the principles of project management, quality assurance and organisational management. YEAR TWO: In second year, students study the production of 2D and 3D content using content production software, and create 2D sprite-based games. Programme Description:The BA in Performing Arts (Acting/ Theatre Design) is unique in Ireland, offering tuition to Level 8 in the linked fields of acting/performance and theatre design. Programme Description:IT Sligo has consulted widely with industry to develop this new, nationally unique programme, which will equip graduates with the skills now required in modern, high-performance companies in precision engineering, mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing. Skill shortages have been identified in precision engineering, and increased job opportunities have been predicted for engineers with these skills. Programme Description:The BSc in Environmental Protection was established in 1975 and is the longest-running environmental science course in Ireland. Our students acquire skills in a variety of analytical, laboratory-based techniques and ecological fieldwork used in environmental monitoring and assessment. Course delivery involves a combination of field trips, laboratory work, site visits, project work and lectures.

Course Structure: Modules include diversity of life, cell biology, earth science, water quality, climate science and meteorology, microbiology, aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology, water and wastewater treatment, waste management and bio-molecular technologies.

YEAR ONE: First year provides the student with a foundation in science and an introduction to the world of environmental science.

YEAR TWO: In second year, students learn practical and analytical techniques for assessing the effects of human activity on terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric ecosystems.

YEAR THREE: In third year, students investigate the physical/chemical and microbiological effects of pollutants in rivers, lakes and groundwater. The effects of spreading animal slurries and the disposal of effluent from septic tanks on soil and water quality are assessed as part of the course. Students work in teams to monitor the operation of laboratory-scale water treatment plants and are trained to assess the effects of pollutants on living organisms in the module on ecotoxicology.

There is also a dissertation which focuses on the implementation of one or more of the key areas of EHS management. Visits to industrial and municipal workplaces form a significant part of the course.

Course Structure: In the first semester, students study environmental systems and technologies, air and noise pollution, water, wastewater and ecology, waste and energy, occupational safety and health, hazard identification, risk management, accident prevention and investigation, construction, machine and electrical safety, handling, storage and transport of chemicals and hazardous materials. Students also study occupational hygiene. Programme Description:This is an undenominated science degree which gives students an exceptional level of flexibility. The programme builds a core foundation in key science disciplines in the first two years of study. It also allows students to choose elective science subjects in years one and two before selecting a specialised honours degree at the end of year two. Students follow one of four designated honour’s degree pathways in years three and four. This course emphasises practical laboratory science skills for students and is delivered in the new MacMunn Science building at IT Sligo.

Course Structure: Subjects studied in year one include core science modules in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, IT and learning to learn. Programme Description:This course gives students the knowledge and skills to protect workers from injuries and fatalities, prevent illness caused by work, promote health and wellbeing, advise employers on health and safety law and work in groups to solve workplace safety issues. Students will also learn how to prepare, implement and monitor safety management systems in the workplace.

Course Structure: YEAR ONE: Students study the biological and chemical sciences which underpin occupational safety and health, and develop a range of communication and IT skills.

YEAR TWO: In year two, students study important safety and environmental topics, including safety law, behavioural safety, construction safety, occupational toxicology, biological health hazards and environmental water quality.

YEAR THREE: In third year, the areas covered include risk management, occupational health and hygiene, safety law and environmental topics.

YEAR FOUR: In fourth year, students complete a five month work placement in safety and health. There is a focus on developing the knowledge and skills to allow the student to take responsibility for managing occupational safety and health and legal compliance. Programme Description:This programme was established in 1999 and is one of the longest running courses in health science in the country. It features a solid foundation in health science and develops into a broad-based qualification which takes a holistic approach to the study of human health. Emphasis is on understanding, promoting and maintaining health and wellness through physical activity, diet and other health behaviours. The course is delivered through a mix of interactive, traditional and practical teaching methods, to give students the broad spectrum of skills required to work as professionals in various health sectors.

Course Structure: YEAR ONE: Students acquire practical skills in core subjects, including biology, chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, mathematics, health and fitness, communications, health promotion, computing, kinesiology, exercise instruction, psychology and sociology.

YEAR TWO: Students study more applied health sciences and develop knowledge of and practical skills in a variety of areas. Key modules include exercise physiology, health psychology, health biochemistry, health microbiology, research methods, determinants of health, human testing and evaluation and facilitation skills.

How to Apply and Student ServicesAll applications for entry to the first year of IT Sligo’s full-time undergraduate courses are through the Central Applications Office (CAO). How Do I Apply?

The CAO application system is as follows: Using a single application, you may choose up to 20 courses, 10 courses at Level 8 and 10 at Level 7. Your choices on one list do not affect your choices on the other list – you may receive two independent course offers, one from each list. It is extremely important to list your choices in order of genuine preference in each category.

What if I have a disability or medical condition? Many students with disabilities will gain entry to third level studies through the standard route. In addition, IT Sligo reserves a number of places each year for students with disabilities who cannot compete equally in the Leaving Certificate or FETAC/QQI examinations and who do not achieve the necessary points through the standard route. However, all applicants must achieve at least the minimum entry requirements for any course.

IT Sligo is part of the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE). This is a third level admissions scheme which offers places on reduced points to

applicants with disabilities. In order to be considered for such a place, you must apply to the CAO by 1st February. By 1st March you must indicate your wish to be considered for DARE by ticking “Yes” to Question 1. You must also complete Section A (Questions 1-5) of the Supplementary Information Form. Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are a guideline of the recommended academic ability we expect you to have. There are a number of different ways to satisfy the entry requirements for IT Sligo. The most common method is through the Irish Leaving Certificate exams. However, you can also satisfy the entry requirements by having FETAC qualifications, by being a mature student or having other qualifications, such as GCE AS, A2, AVCE, BTEC, etc. Some courses may also have specific entry requirements and these will be detailed in the programme information on www.itsligo.ie.

Irish Leaving Certificate Requirements HIGHER CERTIFICATE/LEVEL 6 - Five grade D3 at Ordinary Level to include Mathematics and English or Irish

- We also accept an E in Higher Level Mathematics, and a B2 or above in Foundation Mathematics, as meeting the mathematics entry requirements.

ORDINARY DEGREE/LEVEL 7 - As above, and in addition we require a minimum of 140 points for entry to all Level 7 courses.

HONOURS DEGREE/LEVEL 8 - A minimum of four grade D3 at Ordinary Level and 2 Grade C3 at Higher Level. Leaving Certificate subjects must include Mathematics and English or Irish

GCE AS, A2, AVCE, Double Award, BTEC For entry to Year 1, applicants must have a recognised award at Level 3 on the UK framework of qualifications. GCE AS and A Level, NVQ Level 3, Advanced Diplomas and Vocational Qualifications Level 3 are recognised qualifications for entry to IT Sligo. Applied A Levels (AVCE) are treated in the same way as A Levels. Please provide full details of GCE A2 & AS, AVCE, Double Award, BTEC, etc in the Part B “Special Categories” section of the application. The CAO will issue offers to applicants who have achieved sufficient points for their chosen courses towards the end of August.

Calculation of CAO points for GCE examinationsCAO points (similar to UCAS Tariff points) are assigned to the exam grades presented by candidates who meet the minimum entry requirements. Points are used to rank applicants. The points required for entry to a particular course are determined by the level of demand on course places. A Student Contribution (registration) fee of €3,000 (2015/16) is payable by all students who do not qualify for a grant or scholarship.

SUSI, Student Universal Support Ireland, provide financial support to eligible students. There are two elements to the student grant – a maintenance grant and a fee grant. A maintenance grant is a contribution towards your living costs. A fee grant can cover:

- All or part of your tuition fees

- All or part of the Student Contribution fee

- Costs of essential field trips

If you have qualified for a maintenance grant, you will generally qualify for a fee grant.

If you do not qualify for a maintenance grant, but your family’s reckonable income is below certain limits, you may qualify for a partial fee grant. This means that you will either be exempt from 50% of the Student Contribution, or exempt from 50% of any tuition fees and all of the Student Contribution.

Fees and Grants for Students from Northern Ireland or Great Britain Students from Northern Ireland or Great Britain do not have to pay tuition fees to study in the Republic of Ireland (because they are paid by the Irish government). However, you do have to pay the Student Contribution fee of €3,000 (2015/16). To cover this upfront cost, you can get a Student Contribution Loan to help pay up to the full amount of the fee contribution. Student loans and grants in the United Kingdom are primarily provided by the government through the Student Loans Company.

Student loans are low-interest and partly means tested but unlike a grant, you have to pay the money back eventually. The Student Loans Company decides on whether you’re eligible for a loan and if so, how much you can get.

The minimum entry requirements for graduates of FETAC (Level 5 or 6) awards to:

- Higher Certificate Course (NFQ Level 6) is a full FETAC (Level 5 or 6) award

- Ordinary Degree Course (NFQ Level 7) is a full FETAC (Level 5 or 6) award

- Honours Degree Course (NFQ Level 8) is a full FETAC (Level 5 or 6) award to include Distinction grades in at least three components.

For entry to the majority of courses, a full award may be accumulated over more than one academic year. In such cases, it is the responsibility of the applicant to apply to FETAC for a full award.

Also, for some courses, specific component awards in mathematics must be included in the FETAC award presented for entry.

Scoring System for Eligible FETAC Applicants All FETAC awards are part of the Common Awards System, or CAS, from 2014. A full FETAC Level 5 or 6 major award will have a minimum credit value of 120. Component awards, or achievement of less than 120 credits, do not constitute a full award.

Scoring Process Each FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 component is scored as follows: Pass 1.111 Merit 2.222 Distinction 3.333.

This component score is then multiplied by the individual component credit value to a maximum of 120 credits, a total maximum of 400 points. Components leading to the best 120 credits are scored. See table above.

Some applicants will combine components achieved prior to the introduction of CAS with others which are part of CAS. Level 5 and 6 (NCVA) Certificates, i.e. major awards, achieved before the introduction of CAS are also scored according to the system outlined above.

All FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 awards will be scored using the best 120 credits to deliver a maximum of 400 points regardless of whether they were achieved before or after the introduction of CAS.

How FETAC Graduates Apply for Entry to an IT Sligo Course: Applicants who have spent at least one year on a recognised PLC course validated by FETAC can be considered for entry. Applicants who have completed a full FETAC award since 2002 or are in the process of completing a full FETAC award in 2014/15 should follow the FETAC instructions on page two of the CAO application form. As indicated previously, applicants who have achieved their full award over more than one academic year must apply to FETAC for a full award.

In addition, applicants must forward a copy of these results to the Academic Administration Office before the end of June.

FETAC quotas and a requirement for an award to be achieved in a single sitting may apply for certain courses. The CAO will assess your results automatically and make course offers to you if you attain sufficient points for your chosen course.

The same general entry requirements apply to FETAC students as Leaving Certificate students. This means that you must get sufficient points and meet the mathematics requirements of the course you are interested in. Please note that for FETAC applicants, the mathematics requirement can be met by obtaining a pass in the FETAC Level 5 or 6 Mathematics module or by getting a B2 or higher in Foundation Mathematics. For Engineering courses, please check with the Admissions Office for any special requirements.

Mature ApplicantsIT Sligo recognises that mature students can bring a lot of valuable life and work experience to a course. From your perspective, adding a qualification to your experience can help you in your current career. Even a complete career change is an option – the days of people following one career path and staying with one employer are long gone, and it’s not unusual for people to pursue a new qualification or career change later in life. For example, you might now be at a stage when you have a clearer idea of what you want to do than when you first left school. Whatever your current situation and future aims, it’s never too late to benefit from a third level education. The sole criterion for qualification as a mature applicant is age. You are required to be over 23 on 01 January of the calendar year of application.

Mature students apply through the CAO by completing the relevant sections on the CAO form.

Criminal Convictions IT Sligo is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and is keen to encourage a diverse student population with a wide range of talents, backgrounds and experiences. We will consider applications for admission on the basis of the qualifications, skills, abilities and personal qualities of the applicant. We acknowledge the critical role of education in the rehabilitative process and having a criminal record will not necessarily debar an applicant unless the nature and seriousness of the offence in question makes it inappropriate for them to be admitted. Applicants with a criminal record should send notification under separate cover marked “Confidential” to the Student Affairs Manager, IT Sligo, Ash Lane, Sligo, outlining the details of their conviction and the courses in which they are interested in attending. Applications will be processed in accordance with IT Sligo Criminal Convictions Policy available on www.itsligo.ie. The on-going participation of any student who acquires a conviction while undergoing any course at the Institute will be subject to review in accordance with this policy.

Garda Vetting A number of courses at IT Sligo require students to undertake work placements that will bring them into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults and in which they will assume positions of trust. We are committed to protecting the safety of those children and vulnerable adults. IT Sligo will use the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) service as part of the assessment process for entry to the following courses:

This list is subject to review as deemed necessary. The information arising from the Garda Vetting process will be assessed and a decision made in accordance with IT Sligo Garda Vetting Policy.

Physical Testing Students on Recreation and Leisure (SG134) and Health Science and Physiology (SG435) participate in practical modules that include elements of physical exercise. The policy is to ensure that you participate in physical exercise at a level that suits you best.

At registration stage for Recreation and Leisure and for Health Science and Physiology, you will be asked to fill out a simple self-assessment questionnaire. The information you provide will be treated as confidential and it will be reviewed by our Health Services staff. You may be invited for a follow-up medical assessment before participating in the physical exercise elements of your course.

The purpose of this evaluation is to identify the level of physical exercise best suited to your capacity.

Vaccination Requirement Hepatitis B vaccination will be required for work placement for certain courses.

Taking Care of YouOur student Counselling Service and Health Centre offer professional and confidential student support which is available free of charge to all registered IT Sligo students. Counselling gives you some time and space to explore any issue that is of concern to you, and provides the opportunity for any student to discuss in private with a professional counsellor, any concerns which may be impacting on academic performance, personal health, and well-being. Counsellors are specially trained to listen attentively and provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment where you have the opportunity to engage in self-reflection, with a focus on your wellbeing and personal growth. You can also get advice on where to find additional support and how best to move forward.

Support services on campus include: ADMINISTRATIVE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE The Admissions Office provides on-going support in such areas as admissions, registration, grants, fees and examinations.

IT Sligo is fully committed to developing and promoting initiatives that seek to counter educational disadvantage. There are a number of strands to our Access Office activities and initiatives including:

- Breaking the Mould Access Programme – including Summer School and Special Grant Support from our Bursary Fund

- Mature Summer School and Student Workshops.

Our Access Office staff, Catherine McNelis, Access Officer, Linda McGloin, Assistant Access Officer and Learning Support Tutor, Andrea Rynn, welcome your application and will be happy to address any queries you might have.

Support for Students with Special Needs Catherine McNelis provides support to students with special needs arising from a physical or sensory disability or medical condition. A personal support plan is devised for each student. This plan can include the provision of personal assistants, assistive technology, access to course materials in alternative formats and special facilities for examinations.

Andrea Rynn supports students who have dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties. This can include individual tuition and support, assistive technology and examination supports. The Learning Support Tutor can also screen students in relation to specific learning difficulties and assist in referral for psycho-educational assessment.

Breaking the Mould Access ProgrammeThe Breaking the Mould Access Programme offered by IT Sligo is designed for students who have the academic ability to benefit from and succeed in

higher education but who are under-represented at third level due to a variety of social and economic reasons, including long-term unemployment, low family income or little or no family tradition of progression onto higher education.

The opportunity to participate in the Breaking the Mould Access Programme is available to students aged 22 years and under, attending a post primary school or educational centre within the BMW region, which encompasses counties Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.

What is Breaking the Mould?Breaking the Mould will offer eligible students a place in their chosen course if they achieve:

A) minimum entry requirements for that course (such as a Mathematics requirement or two honours for a Level 8 programme) and

B) Within 10% of the points required for that course.

A bursary will also be offered to eligible students to assist them with the costs associated with making the transition to third level studies.

A free Summer School Transition Programme will be provided immediately prior to registration for participating students to ensure that they benefit fully from higher education. One to one mentoring will also be provided to participating students during their first year.

Mature Students The Access Officer, Catherine McNelis is the coordinator of our Access Programme for Mature Students. IT Sligo welcomes applications from mature students. Up to 20% of places on courses in the Institute are reserved for mature applicants. Applications should be made through the CAO in the usual way. An information evening for interested applicants is held in January each year.

A Mature Student Summer School, which is held in the two weeks immediately preceding the commencement of first year classes, is offered to incoming students who have been some time away from education.

At IT Sligo, we wish to create a very welcoming and supportive environment for our new first years. To this end, we have developed the Student Mentoring Programme, which offers a great opportunity for students and staff to work together to support our incoming first years when they commence study with us in September.

The Student Mentoring Programme offers new students the opportunity to create networks with each other and student mentors. These mentors help first years to access the key practical information they need to begin their studies with confidence. Students are placed into groups on the basis of their programme of study and assigned a mentor. The groups meet for lunch on assigned days for four weeks of semester one, and one week in semester two, giving participants the opportunity to chat with each other about their new experiences. Mentors give important information on the supports available to students and are able to answer practical questions about timetables, room locations and where to buy coffee!

Each lunch also features ‘drop-in’ visitors from academic and support staff. Our mentors are second and third year students who have been trained for their role. They are available to answer basic queries via email, text message or phone call for the duration of the programme. They will direct first years to support services where necessary.

IT Sligo student mentors were asked to give one piece of advice to new first years starting off in their course next year. Here are some of the responses:

“ Take as many notes as you can because it’s impossible to remember everything or sometimes understand everything without them.”

“ Do not panic and think that IT Sligo or your chosen course is not for you.”

“ To reduce stress and pressure, manage your time wisely and stay on top of the assignments. Doing a little every day will enable you to stay on top of your work and balance your time wisely.”

“ Be friendly and outgoing.”

“ Enjoy every moment as it flies by, and if you have problems with subjects, go to the lecturers who can explain things better to you.”

“ Hang in there, it gets easier.”

“ Regularly attend classes, particularly practicals. Lecturers are very pleasant and accessible so no student should be fearful of approaching them if they have any concerns.”

Entrepreneurship Scholarships“You could have a million ideas, but they are all worthless if you don’t get them done.”

The IT Sligo/Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NTFE) Entrepreneurship Scholarship scheme aims to provide a pathway for potential student entrepreneurs to allow them to bring their business idea onto the campus and transform it into reality. Each successful applicant can apply for any of the full-time courses available at IT Sligo and will receive €1,500 per year for the duration of their course, together with a range of mentoring supports to develop their concept.

What supports will the student entrepreneur get? - Mentor (academic/business/community)

- Support from the Innovation Centre (access to hot desk space, networking opportunities, participation in Innovation and Enterprise events, workshops and seminars)

- Forbearance in relation to external activities (attending relevant international trade fairs, exhibitions)

- Membership of Student Enterprise Society

- Key contact person (personal tutor)

- Other possible support resources (travel budget, PR supports, links to Enterprise Ireland, etc.)

- Link to the Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship project.

Through these entrepreneurship scholarships, we recognise and reward innovation and facilitate those who wish to develop their business/social entrepreneurship concept in a supportive learning environment.

Benefits to the student entrepreneur As an IT Sligo Entrepreneurship Scholar, you will be required to represent IT Sligo at a range of entrepreneurship-related events and make a significant contribution to the promotion and development of entrepreneurial activity at the Institute. IN RETURN YOU WILL:

- Receive financial support to undertake a course of study at IT Sligo

- Have the opportunity to develop your business concept in a supportive entrepreneur-ready learning environment

- Have access to a range of specialised academic, industry and community supports

- Participate in an excellent personal development opportunity to build the essential skills and qualities of effective communication, problem-solving, team skills and assertiveness.

Who is eligible? Students who have completed the Foróige/Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship programme, the County Enterprise Board Student Enterprise Competition or who just have an original idea are encouraged to apply. All applicants must have a CAO number to be eligible to apply for the Scholarships.

IT Sligo/NTFE Entrepreneurship Scholarships are aimed at those with an innovative business or social entrepreneurship idea who wish to pursue an academic programme at the Institute while still developing their business idea.

You must meet the academic requirements pertaining to the course for which you have applied. AS A STUDENT, YOU MUST:

- Ensure a satisfactory attendance record for your course of study

- Participate in all Institute entrepreneur activity and programmes

Bus and train timetables are posted on the Students’ Union noticeboard. Timetables are also available at: WWW.IRISHRAIL.IE and WWW.BUSEIREANN.IE

The local Sligo City Bus Service has an official stop on the Institute campus. Sligo is well served by bus, rail and road connections.

Many students stay in Sligo during the week and then go back home at the weekend. Public and private companies operate coach services to Mayo, Donegal, Derry, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Galway, Longford and Mullingar.

You can travel from Dublin to Sligo by rail, bus or car in under three hours. Ireland West Airport Knock is less than an hour’s journey from Sligo.

School Visits At IT Sligo, we provide an extensive schools visitation programme designed to give you general information about IT Sligo and the courses we offer.

This service is available to second level schools and all organisations that require further information on the wide variety of courses offered at IT Sligo. However, nothing beats actually coming here to see the place for yourself!

Campus Visits Visits to our campus give you an opportunity to examine career options, discuss courses with lecturers, explore the college and its facilities and experience a taste of life in a third level Institute first-hand. Visits can be arranged for groups or on an individual basis.
