The great Irish poet and playwright William Butler Yeats was very much involved with Sligo throughout his lifetime.

He is buried in Drumcliffe graveyard, just beneath Benbulben Mountain.

Yeats included Sligo in many of his poems, including “ Lake Isle of Inisfree”.

It is part of the Dartry Mts, in an area sometimes called "Yeats Country".

Benbulben, and the Dartry Range, is composed of limestone on top of mudstones. These rocks formed in the area approximately 320 million years ago.

Benbulben hosts a unique variety of plants, including some organisms found nowhere else in Ireland. Many are arctic-alpine plants, due to the mountain's height, which allows for cooler temperatures than normal. These plants were deposited when the glaciers that created Benbulben melted. Wild hares and foxes inhabit Benbulben.

Knocknarea is approximately 327m tall and is made of limestone

Once you reach the top there lies the cairn of Queen Maeve of Connacht. The cairn is about 10 metres high and is visible for miles around. It has not been excavated, but it is thought to cover a passage tomb similar to that of Heapstown Cairn.

Queen Maeve and Knocknarea Mountain are mentioned in several of Yeats' poems and are of keen interest in Irish myth. There are spectacular views around County Sligo.

The Ox Mountains are a mountain range in County Sligo on the west coast of Ireland. They are also known as Saint Patrick's Mountains after the saint who built churches on its slopes and left his name to some of its wells. The highest peak in the Ox Mountains is Knockalongy, which is 544 metres (1,785 ft) high.

There are many lakes in sligo including the smallest lake in ireland which was formed due to an earthquake in the 1400’s.
