Baume & Mercier launches the

The epiTome of urban chic

Baume & Mercier new Clifton Collection sets an understated elegant

tone for contemporary men seeking an intensely masculine, yet

contemporary timepiece. Its 1950s inspired classic double-beveled

steel or 18K red gold case combines urban charm with the technical

accomplishment of high-end mechanical self-winding movements.

The Triple Calendar and Moon Phase variation is intended for men

seeking an extra touch of sophisticated class; while the stellar model

in this new collection, named Clifton 1830 in symbolic reference to the

brand’s founding date, is a handsome and authentic manually wound re-

edition of the original historical model.

conTemporary SwiSS perfecTion

Heir to a long-standing watchmaking tradition, the Baume

family founded the “Baume Frères” company in the Swiss Jura

in 1830, which immediately won over a public providing the right

balance of state-of-the-art innovations and distinctive timepieces.

Since its creation, the brand has seen continuous development

and success. Being the seventh oldest brand, it is recognized as

one of the founding pillars of the Swiss watchmaking industry

with its own manufacture based in Les Brenets in the Swiss Jura.

All of which goes to prove that the enduring

brand motto is more vibrantly alive than ever:

How would you describe the Manning Cartell look?

A modern contradiction of print, colour and style.

What’s the inspiration behind your latest collection?

What are your top tips for Spring/Summer shopping?

A cami and a pencil skirt will easily update your wardrobe.

What’s your favourite piece from the new collection?

LinneysFamily owned Linneys has set trends in jewellery design for more than 40 years. SHOP Sydney speaks to Assistant Creative Director, Justin Linney.

Sum up the Linneys brand and the design inspiration?

Each year Linneys releases a collection inspired by diverse elements such as music, dance or iconic

landmarks of the world. The 2014 campaign draws inspiration from the luxury and glamour that surrounds the Cote d’Azur region.

What are the biggest trends in jewellery this season? Expect to see a push towards beautiful coloured gems. Long necklaces and big rings are hot items.

What are your top tips for purchasing fine jewellery?

From a structural pint of

view, good design doesn’t mean good quality – fine jewellery should be able to be worn and enjoyed – so be careful the piece isn’t too fine! Our Linneys workshop specialises in creative beautiful jewellery that will withstand the test of time. From a personal point of view, there is an element of truth to the statement ‘the jewellery chooses you.’ The wearer will know the piece for them when they try it on.

new on the Sydney shopping scene.

Good news for frequent flyers wanting to look good on the go. Direct from the catwalks, these are our pick of the top trends for Spring/Summer.

Along with balmy days and blue skies, the new season ushers in a bold new set of trends. Crisp whites are the perfect partner for sunny days, and many designers chose to put a new twist on the classic monochrome palette. Shades of brilliant blue took over catwalks in Paris, London and New York – while designers across the globe gave their looks grip by adding texture.

Texture

Pare things back to black and white. Timeless and sharp – it’s all about the play of opposites. Incorporate stripes or dots to up the ante.

Amp up the fun with texture. Go for garments in lace, mesh and embossed pattern – or try sequins and beading.

What are the key trends for Spring/Summer 2013/14?

Australian brands like SABA have presented a beautiful wash of white. White on white on is a huge trend this season – it’s simple, clean and beautiful. Bold monochromatic prints are also making a huge statement, while asymmetrical hemlines, cut-outs, sheer panelling, midriffs and raw hemlines are a fun way to play hide and seek. Dark indigos and navy were seen dominating runways, where designers Willow and Zimmerman previewed hues of blue. Lace, teamed with other textures in metallic or leather, was also key for Zimmerman and Ginger & Smart. Top-to-toe white in a combination of lace, leather and silk is what I crave to wear most, combining trends is the perfect way to achieve a look that is edited and relevant. Bon appetit!

Style Scoop SHOP with the ExpertsSHOP

SHOP Sydney chats to top fashion bloggers, designers and makeup artists to bring you the best insider shopping tips, the latest trends and must-have items for your new-season wish list.

Bloggers,

THEYALLHATEUS.com.AU

This powerhouse blogging duo have become style icons in their own right, amassing a following of more than 200,000 between their personal Instagram accounts. It’s no surprise, then, they know their way around shopping in Sydney - so much so that they’ve started their own online shop with handpicked items offering a monthly fix of ‘need-it-now’, covetable pieces. Check it out at shop.theyallhateus.com.au

What’s your favourite local shopping spot?

Elle: Without a doubt, The Intersection Paddington. Start the day at Jackies Café, then shop all of Australia’s best designers like Bassike, Scanlan & Theodore, Ellery… then you have the best from around the world, just down the road at Parlour X and Lands End.

Tash: I also love Chatswood Chase, it has a big David Jones with my favourite labels like Scanlan & Theodore and One Teaspoon, plus Country Road, Witchery and Seed all under one very large roof! Avalon [north of the city] is laid-back coolness, with food, homewares and a great Bassike store.

What are the key trends for Spring/Summer 13/14?

Tash: Lots of white is showing up in apparel and footwear; denim in classic blues; very pre-loved denim jeans (a personal favourite), and logo print and large-scale graphic print tees.

Tash Williams

& Elle Ferguson

Any tips for shopping for the perfect outfit in Sydney?

Elle: Go to Bassike and buy white, black and grey marle men’s T-shirts. Then get a pair of denim shorts from One Teaspoon, black ankle boots from Tuchuzy in Bondi, a black blazer from Scanlan & Theodore, a spray tan from Tan Temple Bondi Beach and an amazing bag from Lands End.

Tash: Invest in a few classic key pieces you can wear over again. Purchase one great handbag that’s a statement – try designer bags from David Jones, Parlour X, Lands End or The Corner Shop. You might faint at the price tag, but the pay off is how you feel wearing it. Plus, it’s the one thing that can be worn every day without needing to be washed!

What are the top three items everyone should buy for Spring/Summer 13/14?

A relaxed striped tee, a pair of leather shorts and a casual leopard sneaker.

What’s on top of your wish lists right now?

Some Ann Demeulemeester lace-up sandals.

What are the best pieces to splurge and save on?

Splurging is best saved for shoes and handbags that are timeless. It’s best to save on items that are mini-trends – things you won’t see yourself wearing more than one season.

Where’s a great place to bag a bargain in Sydney?

What do you think is so special about shopping in Sydney?

It’s a very beautiful city to shop in. Sydney is pedestrian-

friendly and we have an accessible

mix of international and local brands, both

high end and high street.

How has Sydney grown in terms of its fashion and retail offerings?

Sydney is now on par with any other international shopping destination. The Sydney CBD has been completely modernised with the addition of Westfield Sydney, but you can still hunt around and find other little retail gems in the side streets.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Sydney?

The Victor Churchill

Butchery and Simon Johnson Providore in Woollahra are fantastic for picking up bits and pieces when I entertain, and, of course, my Life.Style store on Queen Street! I basically created my ideal shopping destination when my wife, Soula-Marie, and I developed our Life.Style concept. It stocks a great mix of international fashion designers as well as one-off pieces of art, accessories, vintage designer jewellery and homewares. I also love Castlereagh Street in the CBD for the best luxury designers, even if it is only window-shopping. Surry Hills is fab for quirky little homewares and knick-knacks.

What are the key fashion stores for men in Sydney?

For imports, Harrolds has the best edit. For local designers, I like MJ Bale and Farage for suiting and shirts.

Becky Cooper

& Bridget Yorston

Designers, BEC & BRIDGE

in Sydney that comes around a few times a year (see designer salesaustralia.com). It offers an amazing array of discounted international and local labels.

What are your top tips for shopping in Sydney?

It’s all about checking out great boutiques that stock your favourite labels; we love Tuchuzy in Bondi. It has such a relaxed vibe, but also stocks some serious international fashion – you’ll never leave empty handed. Sydney has great sales as well, but it’s best to do

your research before you hit the shops so as not

to get overwhelmed by what’s on offer!

The City Sydney CBD

There’s no doubt Sydneysiders have their own sense of style – a style that could only originate from the city’s eclectic mix of original Australian designers, luxury

international retailers and high street stores. With such an impressive catalogue on offer, it’s no wonder that shopping has become one of this city’s favourite pastimes.

In the centre of it all is the Sydney Central Business District (CBD) – a locale that could cater for even the most selective clothes horse or style connoisseur. Wander through gorgeous Victorian arcades, while away afternoons window shopping the luxury district, and be dazzled by the newest designer flagship stores.

While international cities can be daunting, visitors need not fret about navigation – the Sydney CBD is organised into four main streets, all of which run parallel. First up is George Street, the city’s original high street

that’s home to various key precincts and important architecture, including the grand historic Queen Victoria Building. Nearby Pitt Street is a bustling pedestrian arcade comprising more than 600 specialty stores, while Castlereagh Street sparkles with boutiques from top international players – Gucci, Chanel, Jimmy Choo and the recently opened Christian Dior. Sitting atop it all, with a lush parkside location, is Elizabeth Street. It features Australia’s oldest department store, David Jones, famous for its indulgent gourmet food halls and old-school window displays.

}

The heart of the cityGeorge Street, Pitt Street Mall, the QVB

Lap of LuxuryOver the past few years, an increasing number of designer brands have opened lavish showrooms in the CBD. Most recently, iconic French fashion house Christian Dior launched its new flagship store on the corner of Castlereagh and king Streets. Designed as a grand Parisian apartment, the multi-level boutique features over a dozen distinct rooms, a private salon and a dedicated

Dior Homme area for men. Diagonally across the road, you’ll find the recently refurbished Chanel store, and on nearby George Street, British luxury label Burberry sits just up the road from Louis Vuitton’s landmark three-storey ‘Maison’ emporium.

Not to be outdone, Westfield Sydney capitalises on some of europe’s most famous fashion houses – Armani Exchange, Bottega Veneta and Versace to name a few. However it’s Prada and little

sister Miu Miu that really take the cake for a head-turning shopfront, boasting impressive façades and minimalistic design from architect Roberto Baciocchi.

Finally, head to Martin Place for the refurbished Emporio Armani showroom, featuring sleek, high-end men’s and women’s fashion. Personally designed by Giorgio Armani and his team of architects, it boasts floor-to-ceiling backlit glass shelving and crystals embedded into shiny fabric walls.

Westfield Sydney

Flanked on either side by the sparkling windows of flagship stores, Pitt Street Mall is Australia’s busiest and most cosmopolitan shopping precinct. A pedestrian thoroughfare, it hosts a compact arrangement of multi-level shopping centres, including the city’s two major department stores, Myer and David Jones. Both are well worth a visit for their floors of designer labels, high street fashion, cosmetics, homewares, electrical goods and gourmet food.

As the Mall’s oldest resident, The Strand Arcade houses a plethora of Australian designer boutiques including The Corner Shop, Alex Perry and sass & bide. Those with a love for cutting-edge jewellery and object design are sure to find something special at COTA (an acronym

for Courtesy Of The Artist) while retail-loving sweet tooths can’t go past a trip to Haigh’s, Australia’s oldest, family-run chocolatier.

If QVB and The Strand are ‘grand old dames’ of the city, then Westfield Sydney is their alluring younger sister. Just three years old, it towers over Pitt Street in a shining tribute to luxury, world-class shopping, playing home to some of the biggest names in European fashion, including Chanel, Gucci, Prada and Miu Miu. American style is represented by the likes of the newly opened Michael Kors, as well as Calvin Klein and Diane von Furstenberg, while Karen Millen’s boutique flies the flag for British design. From the local hall of fame, you’ll find perennial favourites Ksubi and Ginger & Smart alongside classic Australian mainstays like designers Carla Zampatti and Leona Edmiston.

With more than 330 stores on offer, there’s also plenty of tempting high street fashion dotted throughout the centre. Try Marcs for covetable classics, Calibre for suave men’s suits at affordable prices, and

Kookai for Parisian-inspired elegance, where each piece can be worn to create a unique look. Of course, the real hero of recent retail times has got to be Spanish fashion powerhouse, Zara – a bright and bold three-floor emporium, with stock updated twice weekly to keep collections current.

Before leaving, pay a visit to the exciting Westfield Sydney Level Six dining precinct, featuring a hand-picked selection of world-class eateries including tasty Thai food at Chat Thai, delicious Yum Cha at Sky Phoenix and exciting Greek offerings at Xanthi.

TOP 5 City Bars

1 Palmer & Co. Be transported into the old Prohibition era

with a visit to this intriguing underground bar.

2 The Baxter Inn Picture exposed brick, mahogany furnishings

and walls of whisky. Add to that complimentary pretzels and a well-turned out crowd of young professionals and you’ve got the Baxter Inn.

3 Lobo Plantation This new city basement bar is influenced by

the old-school Caribbean and it has a slightly glam, Gatsby-esque vibe. Named after legendary Cuban sugar baron, Julio Lobo, Lobo Plantation boasts an impressive selection of rum-based cocktails.

4 Frankie’s Pizza Think old-school Italian restaurant meets

‘70s and ‘80s rock and roll and you’ve got Frankie’s Pizza – one of the coolest booze basements in the city, complete with a 4am license.

5Water Bar at BLUETop-notch cocktails, a slick interior and a

harbourside location make Water Bar a prime spot for an evening tipple. Named the 2012 Bar of the Year by the Australian Hotels Association.

Quirky, artistic and undeniably cool, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst are the epicentre of off-beat and on-trend fashion. The go-to place for cool boutiques and vintage

finds, it’s no surprise that these Sydney villages have become the gathering ground of the young and the hip.

Not only is Sydney’s Oxford Street famous for its celebration of gay culture, it also plays host to some must-stop shopping spots. A short walk from Hyde Park, Australian label Premonition features standout smart-casual pieces for both men and women. Nearby, you’ll find Estate of Mind. A concept store for emerging Australian design talent, it is a melting pot of women’s and men’s fashion, accessories and art. Just a few doors down is internationally acclaimed label American Apparel, famed for its stretchy wardrobe staples, quirky sock and stocking selection and retro-inspired timepieces.

Is figure-hugging fabulous more your style of dress? Walking from the CBD, turn right onto Crown Street, to visit Wheels and Dollbaby for their range of daring bustiers and sassy ensembles, favoured by celebrities like Katy Perry, Sadie Frost and Dita Von Teese.

Continue along Crown Street and you’ll come to the Collector Store. Set in a gorgeous green-tiled terrace, this boutique clothing shop presents a line-up of local and international designers – including All About Eve, Megan Park and Academy – as well as quirky homewares from around the globe.

Lovers of vintage and retro clothing will be sure they’ve found heaven on this strip. There’s Grandma Takes A Trip, full of glamorous picks from decades gone by, and Zoo Emporium, which is brimming with retro T-shirts and sweet ‘70s shades.

But for serious second-hand shoppers, Sydney Antique Centre on South Dowling Street is the place to be. One of Australia’s largest antique emporiums, it boasts an arcade of specialty vintage stores featuring everything from beautifully preserved fur coats to kitsch ‘50s dresses and stunning 1930s evening gowns. If décor is more your thing, peruse the collections of antique furniture, porcelain, clocks, dolls and Orientalia – you could pick up a Royal

Doulton tea set, a coloured Erica telephone, or even a vintage Coke yo-yo!

Tired from all the shopping? Kick back with a coffee and sweet treat at local favourite Bourke Street Bakery, or drop in at Gelato Messina to sample gelato in an impressive range of weird and wonderful flavours.

In the mood for something stronger? Stop by Pocket Bar for signature cocktails and quirky crepes, or head to El Loco for frozen margaritas, hot dogs and soft-shell Mexican tacos. Cheers to that!

Lovers of vintage and retro clothing will be sure they’ve found heaven on this strip.

The tree-lined streets of Paddington and Woollahra are decorated with gorgeous Victorian terraces, fashionable restaurants and luxury boutiques. For decades, this

elegant locale has lured the Sydney elite with its café culture and enticingly decadent lifestyle.

At the top of Oxford Street sits the leafy haven of Woollahra. Walk down its main promenade, Queen Street, to find the flagship stores of Australia’s most famous designers. First up is Japanese-born Akira Isogawa, internationally acclaimed for his romantic silhouettes and richly embellished fabrics that blend Eastern influences with feminine beauty. Nearby is the Sydney boutique of iconic designer Collette Dinnigan, famed for her beautifully crafted lace and floral dresses, exquisite bridal wear and diffusion collections.

There’s nothing more stylish than a well-crafted shirt and that’s exactly what Australian label Herringbone specialises in. Just next door on Queen Street, their shop is replete with classic, flattering designs, plus suiting, knitwear, handbags, shoes and a bespoke tailoring service.

And for that special finishing touch, don’t miss the Napoleon Perdis Life.Style retail store, which has taken up residence at the old Woollahra Post Office. A hub of stylish creativity, it features an eclectic selection of antique furniture, art and jewellery alongside signature Napoleon Perdis cosmetics. According to Perdis, the aim was to “recreate the experience, that feeling I get when I stumble upon something remarkable, whether it’s just an interesting trinket or a true

treasure to add to my collection.”

Speaking of treasures, just around the corner sits the Donna Hay General Store, a beautiful corner terrace on Holdsworth Street that boasts hand-picked homewares, Hay’s own recipe books and some seriously tempting freshly baked brownies.

Fancy an alternative sidewalk to style? Back at the Queen Street intersection, turn right onto Oxford Street and meander into Paddington. This chic suburb plays host to scores of elegantly coiffed fashionistas traversing the up-market stores of Sydney’s emerging and established designers. While here, pay a visit to Dinosaur Designs – one of Australia’s most

The province of the bronzed and the beautiful, Bondi is the place to be for soy lattes, street style and surf culture. Just off the esplanade sit a peppering of achingly cool fashion

boutiques and organic cafés, making this Sydney suburb a year-round hot spot.

No visit to Bondi would be complete without a stroll down Campbell Parade. Watch the rolling waves and take in the salty breeze as you peruse the offerings of various beachside stores. There’s Bikini Island, with its healthy selection of swimwear from Australian designers such as Zimmermann and Tigerlily, and Bondi Beach Bag Co, which stocks beachwear, baskets, hats and beautiful printed kaftans. Serious about surfing? Try Bondi Surf Co. for boards, womens and men’s surfwear and accessories.

Then again, if ‘beach babe’ is not your style, never fear – Gould Street’s just around the corner. Kick things off at Ksubi, the brand stamp of Australia’s ‘cool set’, which made its name with signature denim but has since expanded to complete men’s and womens ranges. Just a few doors up is Tuchuzy, Bondi’s go-to place for serious style, with an impressive collection of local and international ‘it’ labels that could leave fashionistas weak at the knees. But don’t faint just yet – you could miss The Annex, a menswear boutique with a collection of labels so on-trend they’re guaranteed to inspire even the most retail-reclusive gentleman.

Wander to the juncture of Curlewis Street and you’ll find Me and Moo. This store is typical of Bondi: a clean-living, bohemian vibe coupled with an up-market designer sensibility. For a real treat, continue up Curlewis (away from the beach) until you reach Purl Harbour, an esteemed

Shop by the shore

specialty knitwear destination famous for its handmade and custom-designed pieces.

Need a quick pick-me-up? Why not enjoy an interactive ice-cream experience at Cold Rock? Select your flavour and confectionery of choice, then watch as the staff create a personalised cone right before your eyes. For something more sophisticated, indulge in a reviving glass of wine on the Bondi Icebergs balcony. Founded in 1929, this well-loved institution boasts a panoramic view of the beach that’s sure to take your breath away.

For die-hard shoppers, Bondi Junction is just a short bus ride away, smack bang between the city and the surf. Jump on a 333, 380 or 381 from Campbell Parade and sit tight along Bondi Road until you reach the mega Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre. Arguably Australia’s most glamorous retail precinct, this six-level mall is notable for its modern structure and abundance of up-market retailers covering fashion, food, beauty, homewares, gifts and technology. Head here for high street labels, including Zara, Witchery and Country Road, plus department stores and designer brands like Bally, Louis Vuitton and the newly opened Tiffany & Co. One thing’s certain: you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Inner West SHOP

Proudly alternative, the Inner West is a stomping ground of indie professionals, free-thinking students and the artistically inclined. At its cultural centre sits

Newtown’s King Street. Bright and buzzing with anarchic energy, the street is a hotbed for quirky, unconventional retailers.

Start at the Japanese-inspired Yoshi Jones, where you’ll find unique men’s and women’s clothing designed with a vibrant Asian aesthetic. Brightly coloured silks and Japanese textiles provide a glorious background to the shop’s selection of vintage kimonos, kitsch homewares and playful patchwork bags.

If retro clothing is your thing, then Newtown is your Wonderland. There’s Cream on King, which is packed with modified and original vintage gear (including a great selection of leather boots and jackets), or the Australian Red Cross shop, which showcases hand–picked, top-quality recycled ensembles. There’s also Mulberry Street Vintage on Enmore Road – home to an impressive collection of designer vintage clothes. There’s no lack of designer boutiques in the Inner West either.

Stop by Pretty Dog for hand–picked cult labels like Karen Walker and Dion Lee, or jump in a taxi to

Fashion with an edge

nearby Balmain for a taste of Darling Street’s famous shopping strip. Not to be missed is cutting-edge womenswear boutique Strelitzia, stocking labels like Camilla, Akira Isogawa and Easton Pearson, while nearby Hunt Leather is home to various international brands including Longchamp and Il Bisonte.

Looking for a unique finishing touch? Also on Darling Street, the aptly named jewellery store Juel stocks one-off handmade pieces from creative team Tegan Arnold and Elsa McMahon.

For an equally unusual selection of curios, Pigeon Ground in the back streets of nearby suburb Camperdown (just north of Newtown) is a beacon of pop culture. Here you’ll find bangles made from melted vinyl, cut-up record earrings and button necklaces.
