Stiletto sandals are a classic option for women, and Sophia Webster has introduced a brilliant update on the style. She has chosen a nautical theme for her current collection, creating a fantasy land of colours and mermaids influenced by David Hockney, Yoko Honda and the seasides of Miami and Malibu. These shoes feature multicoloured thread in summery shades including pink, green, orange and purple, as well as black and white beads dangling from a flower-like threaded formation. HOME-GROWN HEROESA fresh generation of local creatives is taking fashion design to new levels in Singapore. Theresa Harold investigates the labels that are winning fans at home and abroad

When it comes to doing business, Singaporeis regularly ranked as the easiest place in theworld. With its global transportation links, and financial and political stability, it’s not hard to see why investors flock to this city-state. International fashion brands that set up shop here have long reaped the benefit of an affluent population with shopping as its favourite pastime. Now, local designers are getting in on the act and Singaporean fashion labels are enjoying some well-deserved success. Aimed at local women, these brands also have an international appeal, and many are starting to make waves abroad as well as at home.

One such brand is Collate, founded by Velda Tan in 2015. Despite its recent arrival, it is already stocked at Tangs department store and Keepers: Singapore Designer Collective. Last September, Tan even took her debut collection to New York in order to participate in the prestigious Coterie trade show.

Currently, Collate is stocked only in Singapore, but plans are afoot for overseas expansion. When questioned about the

domestic market’s unique needs, Tan explains, ‘Singaporean women are hard workers, juggling multiple roles and responsibilities. They look for classic designs, with the flexibility and quality to see them through different occasions and seasons.’ This timeless, effortless aesthetic can be seen throughout Tan’s entire collection. Whether it’s a knit dress, a long vest or a pair of crêpe trousers, these are pieces that can be incorporated easily into any woman’s wardrobe.

Speaking about her choice to start a business here, Tan says, ‘Being based in Singapore allows for stability and support to grow a fledgling business. It has a great technological infrastructure in place and the government gives a lot of assistance to new businesses. This, for a young label like ours, sets the right foundation for further development.’

For those looking for a more individual aesthetic, Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh’s label Depression, established nearly a decade ago, is one to watch. Although Lim feels that ‘it’s risky being based here because our aesthetic is very non-Singaporean,’ the label’s self-described ‘Asian Street Goth’ style is going down well both at home and in places as diverse as Tokyo, Dubai, Los Angeles and Paris.

Such an international audience is fitting for a brand that looks beyond its own city for inspiration. ‘We love international names from Japan, such as Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo and Undercover.’ However, Depression has a loyal fan base in Singapore, along with two

concept stores. These multi-label boutiques, both called Sects Shop, offer the best of Depression alongside pieces by other names – local and international – that follow its dark, fashion-forward aesthetic.

In Good Company is a stylish brand that is winning fans with its minimalist approach. Co-founded by four friends – Sven Tan, Kane Tan, Jaclyn Teo and Julene Aw – in December 2012, it was originally conceived as a childrenswear brand. This soon developed into a ready-to-wear womenswear line, though it continues to create capsule collections for

girls and boys. Speaking about this unusual evolution, co-founder and designer Sven Tan says, ‘We are delighted to have two or even three generations of women shopping with us. A mum will come in with her daughter, along with the grandmother, and they all find something.’ No doubt this can be attributed to the brand’s design philosophy of classic silhouettes and well-made outfits. ‘In Good Company pieces are meant to last beyond seasons. We don’t follow trends or international fashion calendars.’

In addition to having its own flagship store at ION Orchard, In Good Company is also available in Hong Kong and Jakarta. However, Tan is clear where priorities lie: ‘We currently see Singapore as the most important market for us. We even design our pieces according to how it would fit our customers’ lifestyles – the climate, the prices, how to wear it, ease of maintenance … We are proudly Singaporean; it is the defining basis of our label.’ P

Singapore’s sophisticated consumers have helped forge one of the world’s most dynamic shopping capitals. International

luxury brands and emerging designers cater to their every design need in the city’s glittering shopping centres and streets. To a novice, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Thankfully a growing number of concept stores, which carefully curate their collections from local and international brands, is helping the fashion set navigate the endless choices.

A leading light is MYthology, a multi-label boutique located on trendy Club Street. Its founder Apsara Oswal believes that every garment should have a story to tell, so she stocks eclectic designers and labels that provide contrasting styles and perspectives. Best of all, they are typically not available elsewhere. ‘I do a lot of research to make sure we stock garments that aren’t in the malls,’ Oswal says. ‘Otherwise it defeats the purpose of being a “destination store”.’

Orchard Road, the epicentre of shopping in the city-state. The shop’s co-owner Adrian Ang designed and built much of the interior himself, using wood and industrial piping. ‘There’s a rawness and honesty to the store’s design and fixtures,’ he says. ‘Every bit of it has a little bit of us.’

It also has a lot of fashion, including more than 20 local labels, designed to cater to a broad range of tastes and profiles, ‘from those looking to make a statement to those needing something for brunch with their girlfriends’, as Ang puts it. One popular Singapore-based brand stocked here is AKA Wayward, which creates whimsical, colourful designs for men and women. Another, 20TwoThree, leans toward the modern, melding conceptually defined cuts with geometric elements and exceptional draping. From the cropped Plateau trousers for women to the Kaise shirt for men, the simple silhouettes are beautiful and timeless.

Ang says that customers don’t need to arrive with a specific brand in mind. ‘The one thing that stands out for our clients is that they’ve come to trust our selection of labels,’ he says. ‘They come to us knowing that nearly every visit will be different, and we are constantly trying to find items that will delight

di Singapura. Theresa Harold mengulik label-

label yang merebut penggemar di dalam dan

luar negeri

Ketika berbicara tentang berbisnis,

Singapura diperingkat secara rutin sebagai

tempat termudah di dunia. Dengan rantai

transportasi global, serta stabilitas keuangan

dan politiknya, tidak sulit untuk melihat

alasan investor mengerubungi negara kota

ini. Merek-merek mode internasional yang

mendirikan toko di sini telah lama meraup

manfaat sebuah populasi yang makmur dengan

berbelanja sebagai pengisi favorit waktu luang

mereka. Kini, perancang lokal ikut terjun

beraksi dan label mode Singapura sedang

menikmati sejumlah keberhasilan yang pantas

diterimanya. Ditujukan kepada perempuan

lokal, merek-merek ini juga memiliki daya tarik

internasional, dan banyak yang sedang mulai

menimbulkan gelombang minat baik di luar

yang didirikan oleh Velda Tan di tahun 2015.

Walaupun baru datang, merek ini sudah distok

di pasaraya Tangs dan Keepers: Singapore

Designer Collective. September kemarin, Tan

bahkan membawa koleksi debutnya ke New

York guna berpartisipasi di pameran dagang

Coterie yang bergengsi.

Saat ini, Collate distok hanya di Singapura,

namun rencana-rencana sedang disusun

bagi ekspansi ke luar negeri. Ketika ditanya

tentang kebutuhan unik pasar domestik,

Tan menjelaskan, ‘Perempuan Singapura

adalah pekerja keras, berbolak-balik di antara

beberapa peran dan tanggung jawab. Mereka

mencari rancangan klasik, dengan kelenturan

dan mutu yang membawa mereka melalui

perancang yang sedang naik daun melayani

setiap kebutuhan desain mereka di pusat-pusat

pendekatan minimalisnya. Didirikan lewat

patungan empat sahabat – Sven Tan, Kane

Tan, Jaclyn Teo, dan Julene Aw – di bulan

Desember 2012, label ini aslinya digagas

sebagai merek pakaian anak-anak. Label

ini segera berkembang menjadi lini busana

perempuan siap pakai, walaupun tetap

menciptakan koleksi kapsul untuk anak-anak

perempuan dan laki-laki. Berbicara tentang

evolusi yang tidak lazim ini, salah satu pendiri

dan perancang Sven Tan berujar, ‘Kami senang

untuk menerima dua atau bahkan tiga generasi

perempuan berbelanja ke tempat kami. Seorang

ibu akan datang bersama anak gadisnya,

beserta sang nenek, dan mereka semua

menemukan sesuatu.’ Tidak diragukan bahwa

ini bisa dikaitkan dengan falsafah rancangan

merek ini berupa siluet klasik dan pakaian yang

dijahit apik. ‘Di In Good Company, produk

Di samping lewat toko utamanya sendiri di

Ion Orchard, In Good Company juga tersedia

di Hong Kong dan Jakarta. Akan tetapi, Tan

mengetahui dengan pasti letak prioritasnya:

‘Kami saat ini melihat Singapura sebagai pasar

terpenting bagi kami. Kami bahkan merancang

produk kami sesuai dengan caranya akan pas

dengan gaya hidup para pelanggan kami –

iklimnya, harganya, cara mengenakannya,

kemudahan perawatan … Kami bangga

menjadi Singapura; itulah landasan pengokoh

label kami.’

toko-toko konsep yang makin menjamur,

る。テリーサ・ハロルドが、国内外でファンを獲得し

ているレーベルをレポートする。

ビジネスのしやすさという点では、シンガポールは世

界ランキングトップの常連だ。この都市国家が持つ

世界的な輸送リンクと金融と政治の安定性を考えれ

ば、投資が集まるのも不思議ではない。ここに店舗

を持つ国際ファッションブランドは、裕福でショッピ

ング好きのシンガポール国民の恩恵を長年受けてき

た。そこへ今、地元デザイナーが仲間入りしてきてい

る。シンガポールのファッションレーベルが、つかん

で当然の成功を手にしているのだ。それらのブランド

は地元女性をターゲットにしているが、国際的アピー

ルも持ち合わせていて、自国のみならず海外でも注

目を集めている。

その一つが2015年にヴェルダ・タンが創設し

たコレイト(Collate)で、創設されたばかりにもか

かわらず、その商品は既にタングス・デパートやキ

ーパーズ:シンガポール・デザイナーコレクティブ

の店頭に並んでいる。タンは昨年9月にデビュー

コレクションをニューヨークへ持ち込み、名高い

コテリー展示会に出展した。

コレイトは現在は専らシンガポール国内での取り

扱いとなっているが、海外進出を計画中だ。国内市

場独特のニーズについて尋ねると、タンは「シンガポ

ールの女性はよく働き、いくつもの役割や責任をこな

しています。飽きの来ないデザインと、様々な場面や

シーズンを通して着られる柔軟性と品質が求められ

ているのです。」このような「時期を問わず手間いら

ず」を追求する美学は、タンのコレクション全体に見

られる。ニットのドレス、ロングベスト、クレープパン

ツなど、いずれもどんな女性のワードローブにもすん

なり組み入れられるものだ。

この国を起業の場に選んだことについてタンは、

「シンガポールを拠点にすれば、新興企業が成長で

きる安定した環境とサポートが得られます。技術イン

フラが整備され、政府の新興企業支援も充実してい

ます。当社のような若いレーベルが発展するのに適

した基盤があるのです」という。

もっと個性的なスタイルを求めるなら、ケニー・リ

ムとアンドリュー・ローが10年ほど前に創設した「デ

ィプレッション(Depression)」が注目だ。「うちは全

然シンガポール的じゃないので、この国をベースにす

るのはリスキー」だとリムは感じているが、このレー

ベルの自称「アジア系ストリート・ゴス」スタイルは国

内で評判なだけでなく、東京やドバイ、ロサンゼル

ス、パリなど各地でうけている。

そうした国際的な人気は、自分たちの都市を超

えてインスピレーションを求めるブランドにふさわし

い。「山本耀司、川久保玲、高橋盾(アンダーカバ

ー)など日本出身の国際デザイナーも大好き」だとい

う。とはいえ、ディプレッションの忠実なファンベース

はやはりシンガポールで、ここにはコンセプトストア

が2軒ある。いずれもセクツショップ(Sects Shop)と

呼ばれるマルチレーベルブティックで、ディプレッシ

ョンの人気商品だけでなく、同ブランドのダークで前

衛的な美学に適った国内外の他レーベルも併せて

置いている。

イン・グッド・カンパニー(In Good Company)

は、ミニマリスト的なアプローチでファンを獲得中の

スタイリッシュなブランドだ。スヴェン・タン、ケイン・

タン、ジャクリン・テオ、ジュリーン・オウの4人の友人

が共同で2012年12月に立ち上げたこのブランドは、

当初は子供服ブランドを意図していた。それがまも

なく、ウーマンズウェアの既製服ラインへと発展。今

でも男女子供服をカプセルコレクションとして製作す

るが、レディースが本業だ。この珍しい経緯につい

て、共同創業者でデザイナーのスヴェン・タンは「二

世代、時には三世代の女性が揃って来てくださるの

が嬉しい」という。「お母さんと娘さん、お婆さんが一

緒に来られて、それぞれがお気に入りを見つけられる

んです。」それはきっと、このブランドが飽きの来な

いシルエットと作りのしっかりした衣装をデザインの

モットーとしているからだ。「イン・グッド・カンパニー

の衣装はシーズンを問わず着れるように意図してい

ます。トレンドや国際的なファッションカレンダーに

振り回されることはありません。」

アイオン・オーチャードにブランドの旗艦店があ

る他、イン・グッド・カンパニーの商品は香港やジャ

カルタでも手に入る。とはいえ、タンのプライオリティ

ははっきりしている。「現在はシンガポールを最重要

市場だと考えています。デザインも、気候や価格、着

かた、手入れのしやすさなど、お客様のライフスタイ

シンガポールのコンセプトストアでは、自国と海外の

界で最もダイナミックなショッピングの都になるのに

一役買ってきた。きらびやかなショッピングセンター

やショッピング街には、国際高級ブランドと新進デ

ザイナーレーベルが溢れ、あらゆる消費者のデザイ

ンニーズに応えている。慣れない人はちょっと圧倒さ

れるかもしれない。有難いことに、地元ブランドと国

際ブランドから慎重に選び集めた商品を陳列するコ

ンセプトストアが増えており、ファッション好きが無

その筆頭は、トレンディなクラブ・ストリートにあ

るマルチレーベルブティック、マイソロジー

(MYthology)だ。その創業者アプサラ・オズワル

点を提供するデザイナーやレーベルを取り混ぜて置

ソロジーウーマンにとって魅力的なブランドであるこ

やかな違いでもいいから、何か群衆から際立つよう

なものを試したいとお考えだという点です」とオズワ

ルはいう。マイソロジーでは、未来的なドレスや複雑

な造形のキャットウォーク用衣装で知られるライオ

ネル・ロウなどの地元ブランドで、そのニーズに応え

ている。

一方、マッド・アバウト・ヒュー(MAH)は自称「

ウェアラブルアート」を創作するアーティストやデザイ

ナー、写真家の集団だ。ヘッドスカーフといい夏らし

いシルクのラップドレスといい、このブランドの大胆

なプリントは目を引くこと間違いなしだ。

スレッドベア&スクワーラル(Threadbare &

Squirrel)は、シンガポールのショッピングのメッカ、

オーチャードロードにある。このショップの共同オー

ナーであるエイドリアン・アンは、店舗インテリアの

大部分を自分でデザインし、木材や工業用パイプを

使って自作した。「この店のデザインや備品には剥き

出しの正直さがある」という。「どんな細かい点にも、

私たち自身が反映されているのです。」

もちろん、ファッションもたんまり。20以上の地

元レーベルを揃えて、アンいわく「自分らしさを主張

したい人から、ガールフレンドとのブランチ用にちょ

シンガポールの人気ブランドの一つがAKAウェイワ

ード(AKA Wayward)で、メンズとウーマンズの気

まぐれでカラフルなデザインを創り出している。もう

一つのブランド、トゥエンティ・トゥー・スリー

(20TwoThree)はモダン派で、コンセプトのはっき

りしたカットと幾何学的要素、素晴らしいドレープを

組み合わせている。女性用の丈の短いプラトー

(Plateau)のパンツから、男性用のケイズ(Kaise)

のシャツまで、シンプルなシルエットは美しくタイムレ

スだ。

アンによれば、来店者は具体的なブランドを念

頭に置いて来る必要はない。「私どものお客様につ

いてはっきり言えることは、当店の品揃えを信頼して

くださっているということです。来るたびに違うと言っ

ていいほど何か新しいものが見つかる、そのことを知

って来てくださるんです。だから私たちとしても、お
