depending on the occasion. The magical effect of the feathers suggests the flamboyance of the Venice carnival, and the intricate design is entirely in keeping with the skilled work of watchmaker Georges Édouard Piaget, who founded Piaget on his family farm in the small Swiss village of La Côte-aux-Fées in 1874. fmPiaget Serenissima cuff, CHF360,759, Piaget, 40 rue du Rhône, 1204 Geneva, +41 (0)22 817 0200, piaget.com

IN FINE FEATHER

Swiss heritage brand Piaget is making waves with one of its latest offerings, a cuff bracelet in striking shades of blue and green. The white gold cuff features rare feathers as well as emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. It is called Serenissima, which means ‘the most serene’ and is a term sometimes applied to Venice, whose carnival helped inspire the bracelet. The design is particularly clever: the feathers can be removed so that the cuff can be worn two ways,

HANDCRAFTED HAVEN

Fabrikat in Zürich is a state-of-the-art store filled with beautifully crafted yet practical items that range from stationery to homeware and travel goods. It has been devised by Regina Schibli and Donovan Gregory, the team behind the creative agency Designers’ Club and the unconventional art space The Trace Gallery. All the furnishings have been especially made

for the space, and the attention to detail in the handcrafted wooden cabinets is particularly impressive. Yet what really sets Fabrikat apart is the unusual and exciting produce, from prints and rolls of paper to handmade stools. Even if you visit with just one item in mind you’ll probably leave with a suitcase-full. rdFabrikat, Militärstrasse 76, 8004 Zürich, +41 (0)44 542 4644, fabrikat.ch

YOU’RE INVITED

After popping up in temporary venues in Berlin and Zürich, Qwstion Invites now has a permanent residence in Zürich. The new space is more than just a store: it provides young designers with a platform to showcase their products. Zürich native Damian Fopp is the first lucky participant in this scheme. His designs will be seen alongside the studio’s own collections and other selected brands ‒ for spring/summer 2016 these include Hanna Kawasaki and Clod Bernegger. rdQwstion Invites, Badenerstrasse 156, 8004 Zürich, +41 (0)43 535 2461, qwstion.com

MOLESKINE’S NEW DEPARTURE

Luxury stationery brand Moleskine made its café debut in late 2015 at Geneva Airport. The idea of travel is integral to the brand, so this is an ideal location. Developed in partnership with Caviar House Airport Premium, Moleskine Café offers freshly prepared food as well as notebooks, pens, pencils and bags. There’s an arty feel, too, with artworks on display and with cups decorated by Carlo Stanga, author and illustrator of the Moleskine book I am Milan. Part boutique, part coffee house, part gallery, this is a perfect space to sit and jot down thoughts or sketches – in one of Moleskine’s striking notebooks, of course. thMoleskine Café, Geneva Airport, 1215 Geneva, +41 (0)22 717 8540, moleskine.com

BIODEGRADABLE JEANS

Freitag, the Swiss company that recycles industrial waste materials into accessories and clothes, has launched a line of five-pocket jeans. The company started in 1993 when Markus and Daniel Freitag, brothers and graphic designers, created a messenger bag made from used truck tarpaulins, discarded bicycle inner tubes and car seat belts. Today, as well as bags, Freitag produces dresses, shirts, T-shirts, and now jeans. The heavy-duty denim is made from linen and hemp which together with the yarn and lining are 100% biodegradable. Once you remove the metal buttons the jeans are naturally compostable. The E100 jeans for women and E500 men’s jeans are available in indigo blue and black, all priced at CHF240. rdFreitag, Geroldstrasse 17, 8005 Zürich, +41 (0)43 366 9520, freitag.ch

FASHIONABLE FAVOURITES

The two boutiques of luxury multibrand retailer Vestibule are favourite haunts of Zürich’s most fashionable set. Just off Bahnhofstrasse, the St Peterstrasse store offers high-end womenswear for every occasion, from casual separates to glamorous eveningwear. Founder Laurence Antiglio has a keen eye for fashion, so the store is always filled with must-have items. Brands include Chloé, Isabel Marant, Golden Goose, Forte-Forte, Sonia Rykiel and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The success of the first boutique led Antiglio to open a second. Set on Seefeldstrasse, this store stocks designer items and is also home to Minibule, an equally well-curated selection of children’s clothing. Vestibule is renowned for its great personal service, so don’t hesitate to speak to the friendly staff should you need any assistance. hlVestibule, St Peterstrasse 20, 8001 Zürich, +41 (0)44 260 1331; Seefeldstrasse 56, 8008 Zürich, +41 (0)44 260 1320, vestibule.ch

Located in Zürich’s financial district, it stocks a wide range of high-quality brands such as Nigel Cabourn, 45rpm and Alden, and is a must-visit destination for denim devotees. Having been in retail for more than 25 years, the store’s owners are hugely influential and are credited with introducing the likes of Timberland and Diesel to Switzerland during the 1990s. Eschewing catwalk trends for timeless, classic pieces such as well-made jeans or perfect cotton shirts, the team behind DeeCee Style is inspired by the aesthetics of the US. KEEPING TIME

The new Roger Dubuis shop in Geneva is an exciting addition to the company’s portfolio of stores. It is situated on the city’s historic place de la Fusterie, a location that is of special significance to the luxury watch manufacturer as it was near here that founder Roger Dubuis started his watchmaking career. The new shop has been designed to resemble a jewellery box. Its décor in bronze, black and red has been carefully chosen to resonate with shades intrinsically linked to the Roger Dubuis world. As in all Roger Dubuis boutiques, there is a library where customers can relax and learn more about this striking brand. They can also arrange visits to the factory, which is only 15 minutes’ drive from the store. thRoger Dubuis, 5 place de la Fusterie, 1204 Geneva, +41 (0)22 321 2828, rogerdubuis.com

Previous page and above: Frédérique Constant Horological Smartwatch

The launch of the first Apple watch last year gave rise to an interesting question: would mechanical watchmaking

continue to dominate the world of haute horology or would the new Apple product usher in significant change? Twelve months on, the luxury watch industry shows no signs of abandoning its mechanical roots, yet a few smartwatches have been released by Swiss watch houses and they are proof that technology and mechanics do not have to be mutually exclusive.

In part, this has been accelerated by the creation of a horological smartwatch platform which was developed by Manufacture Modules Technologies Sàrl (MMT), a partnership between companies in Switzerland and California’s Silicon Valley. The platform enables traditional-looking watches to be developed with smartwatch technology; they don’t have digital screens or charging cables and so they retain their classic, refined aesthetic. MMT has facilitated smartwatch technology for a range of Swiss brands including Mondaine and Frédérique Constant.

The latter is renowned for its traditional approach to watchmaking ‒ yet was one of the first Swiss watch brands to release a smartwatch.

Called the Horological Smartwatch, the Frédérique Constant timepiece is available in a stainless steel or rose gold-plated case. It has a galvanised black or silver dial and diamond-cut hands that display information analogically. It connects to a smartphone but can also function autonomously with its sensors, and its sophisticated attributes include tracking sleep patterns and physical activity. The MMT technology it uses has a low-power bonus: the battery will function for more than two years before needing to be charged.

Breitling also offers an impressive new product. Developed, assembled and finished in Switzerland, the Exospace B55 has evolved from the Breitling Cockpit 50. It runs on Breitling’s SuperQuartz movement and has an analogue display of the time as well as two additional displays on the dial. Designed for serious use by pilots, it includes features such as chrono flight time logs. It is made from

titanium and has a rotating bezel with rider tabs that act as reference points to mark important deadlines, and an eye-catching two-tone rubber strap. As timepiece reporter Ariel Adams noted on A Blog to Watch, it is the connectivity that provides the user appeal. ‘When it comes to complex analogue digital watches … using the functions to their fullest extent requires a bit of a learning curve. Breitling has taken a major and very practical step in allowing your phone to simplify the user experience of a complicated watch.’ For Adams, the use of new technology is more than justified.

The Tag Heuer Connected is Tag Heuer’s first smartwatch. It comes with a Google-powered operating system and at 46mm in diameter it looks very similar to the brand’s mechanical Carerra. Made from grade two titanium and with a titanium deployment buckle and interchangeable rubber strap, it has one crown that acts as the control centre. It features three Tag Heuer faces: a chronograph, a three-hander and a GMT. The chronograph

is operated by tapping the screen, once to start or to stop, twice to reset. As a review in the online magazine Hodinkee.com pointed out, ‘it is important to note that this is not a hybrid at all, but rather a true smartwatch’. And this was reflected in the high level of publicity that surrounded its launch.

Bulgari is also looking to the connected future, having teamed up with Swiss company Wisekey, expert in near field communication (NFC), which allows phones, tablets and laptops to share data. The result is the Diagono Magnesium Concept watch; its NFC chip unlocks an application that stores vast amounts of encrypted data and can communicate with other devices. When the watch is tapped against a smartphone, the app is engaged.

With many esteemed Swiss watch brands still to explore the connected market, it is interesting to see German label Montblanc dip its toe in the water with the Timewalker Urban Estrap. A Bluetooth accessory rather than a smartwatch, it can control music, receive smart notifications as small vibrations and preview emails, all from the wrist.

The concept of a Swiss-made smartwatch marks a fork in the road for haute horology. It is a big talking point, but it is still too early to tell whether traditional watchmaking will take a different route as a result. Perhaps the

final word should be given to H Moser & Cie, whose Swiss Alp watch might not have any smartwatch functionality or connectivity, but bears a strong physical resemblance to the Apple watch, with its rectangular case, and its lugs that mimic the wire lugs of the Apple original. Luxury smartwatches might be a serious topic of conversation, but this Swiss watchmaker is settling for a light-hearted approach

Smartwatches released by luxury Swiss watch houses are proof that technology and mechanics do not have to be mutually exclusive

CAFÉ SOCIETYSlow coffee is becoming increasingly popular in Switzerland, and across the country piquant blends are being served by a growing number of relaxing, independent cafés. Dominique Fenn takes her pick of the best

Switzerland is a nation of coffee enthusiasts. On average each resident drinks about 1,200 cups of coffee a year, making the country the third largest consumer of the drink in Europe, after Finland and Norway. It’s no coincidence that Switzerland is home to Nespresso, whose headquarters are in Lausanne.

Offsetting such big business is the growing popularity of café culture in Switzerland. Traditionally the Swiss drink coffee at home rather than in bars, as their neighbours in Italy do. But a new breed of coffee purveyors has been gently changing the nation’s habits. These small-scale speciality companies are frequently cafés, roasteries and shops combined. They’re keen proponents of the growing trend of slow coffee, which celebrates freshness, sustainability and quality.

Generally the Swiss like strong, robust brews. Dark roast espresso and kaffee crème, a long espresso-based drink with milk, remain the most popular coffee beverages. Yet the new wave of specialists is increasingly introducing greater subtlety of flavours from a wide choice of beans and blends. From Bern and Basel to Geneva and Zürich, their chic yet laid-back cafés are the perfect places in which to savour the slow coffee trend.

This bright, retro-stylish café offers a great choice of innovative coffee-making methods, including super-fast Aeropress and cold brews, for which grounds are steeped in room temperature water for a good 24 hours. Also on the drinks menu is Hario filter coffee, the key for this Japanese technique being to pour the beverage very slowly. Sustainability and flavour are of prime importance: beans are carefully sourced and the food menu emphasises local organic produce. Breakfast is a feast of cold meats, cheese, muesli, croissants and more, and is served all day. Café Frühling, Klybeckstrasse 69, 4057 Basel, +41 (0)61 544 8038, cafe-fruehling.chP

Café Noir is rated by locals as one of Zürich’s best places for coffee, so it’s often crowded. Be prepared to queue, but rest assured it will be worth the wait. This is an intimate space, seating about 12 people inside and with a few tables outside on a leafy terrace. Furnishings are shabby-chic and the laid-back atmosphere is often enhanced by background jazz music. A small and enticing selection of cakes and pastries is on offer to anyone who likes to sip their brew alongside something sweet, and there’s also a little shop section where you can buy beans to take away. Roasting takes place here several times a week and customers are welcome to watch the process. Café Noir, Neugasse 33, 8005 Zürich, +41 (0)43 535 4677, cafe-noir.ch

Locals say that a visit to Bern would be a wasted trip if you fail to take in Adrianos. By day this is a buzzing café, proud of its reputation for offering the best coffee in town. In the evening it also becomes a cocktail venue and bar, serving beer from its own microbrewery. The owners frequently travel far and wide to research trends in coffee, and they are steadfast

exponents of fair trade. Some pioneering techniques are used here, with one of the inhouse roasts cold-pressed overnight. Several blends are available to take away as perfect souvenirs of a break in Bern. Adrianos, Theaterplatz 2, 3011 Bern, +41 (0)31 318 8831, adrianos.ch

Boréal is a small, independently owned company with four cafés, all in key locations in Geneva. Set within easy walking distance of Cornavin station, the Mont-Blanc branch is dedicated to third wave coffee, a movement that champions small, high-quality growers and that aims to elevate artisanal coffee to a

status on a par with wine. The branch offers its own range of roasted beans in addition to other specialities chosen by the team. Customers are encouraged to try alternative brewing methods such as Chemex filtered coffee, and the talented baristas are on hand to talk you through the options. Frederique Constant.

Page 54: SHOP Switzerland SS16

54

globalblue.com

Tag Heuer.

Manufacture Modules Technologies Sàrl

(Frederique

Constant)。

博客A

Tag Heuer

(Carerra)

Timewalker Urban

Manufacture Modules

Frederique Constant
