A Year in Review Milestones & Improvements

The city-run Sequoia Park Zoo and the non-profit Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation together offer a great example of a true public-private partnership. The City of Eureka funds the day-to-day operations of the Zoo (animal care, staffing, medical care, and facilities maintenance), while exhibit upgrades, new exhibits, marketing, guest services, and membership are made possible by the Foundation. The Foundation supports both planned and unplanned needs that arise within the Zoo so that generations of family members can continue to enjoy the Zoo, a cornerstone of the community since 1907.

The mission of the Sequoia Park Zoo is to inspire wonder, understanding and respect for the natural world by providing fun, rewarding, educational experiences that

encourage meaningful connections between animals, humans, and our environment.

Spectacular Spiders! A new addition to the popular Barnyard, this exhibit demystifies spiders and explains the important role they play in the ecosystem. Packed with interactive learning tools and a giant spider web play structure, Spectacular Spiders is a big hit with kids.

Everything Travels Downstream This new exhibit introduces our four local species of salmonids. It teaches visitors how to identify these fish and illustrates the importance of clean and healthy urban streams for the species’ survival. Stewardship of urban waterways and the connections between freshwater and saltwater ecosystems is

also explored. Located in Secrets of the Forest, this is an important

addition to our indoor exhibits and a great rainy-day activity.

Safety Crosswalk The City of Eureka installed a new lighted crosswalk in front of the Zoo at the junction of W and Russell Streets. Featuring flashing lights on the pavement and voice guidance for pedestrians, the crosswalk slows traffic for greater safety.

Sequoia Park Zoo Declared a Site of Historical Importance In February, the Zoo was honored with a beautiful dedication ceremony and plaque by the Native Sons of the Golden West as a site of historic importance to the Humboldt County community. This plaque is proudly displayed at the entrance to the Zoo.

Spider Monkey Exhibit Makeover As soon as our Spider monkeys were reliably using the shift facility to move out of their exhibit, staff

prioritized a makeover for this exhibit. Large planters with live shrubs, bamboo, grasses and even strawberry plants were added for a more natural feel and woodchips now cover most of the old concrete floor. The Spider monkeys took to these improvements right away with much apparent appreciation-- they explored the vegetation, lounged on the soft substrate and gently pulled up all the strawberry plants, laying them neatly on nearby boulders. Over the following several days, the zookeepers replanted the strawberries and the Spider monkeys again pulled them out and carefully laid them on the rocks. Eventually, one monkey was seen replanting some plants in another area, and these have taken root!

Crested Screamer Hatchling: Our Screamer pair bred successfully for the second year in a row. This season, they produced four chicks and seem to have the parenting concept down a little better than last year. Only one of the four chicks survived to adulthood, which is not uncommon for waterfowl. The chick will live with its parents for several more months, when we will transfer it to another zoo.

Mixed Species Success: We had great success integrating two Gray foxes into the Black bear habitat with Rosemary, our longtime resident bear. Careful planning and some retrofitting of one of the bear dens to accommodate the foxes (and keep out the bear!) was required. Introductions were done slowly and carefully, with all three animals making the transition very smoothly. The foxes make full use of the large exhibit, sunning themselves on the rock waterfall, lounging in the “meadow” area, and even calmly napping in the tall cypress

tree on keeper-made ledges. Up there, they are literally eye-to-eye with visitors who can easily observe and appreciate the natural beauty

and behavior of these special animals.

Gibbon Enrichment Pulley Feeder: Now that keepers can shift the gibbons out of their

exhibit for daily housekeeping, they have been able to provide the animals with more complex enrichment. One of the favorites is a feeding bucket that keepers can load up with fresh produce at ground level, and hoist up to the top of the exhibit 15 feet above. Instead

of grabbing their food from a pile down low, the gibbons can now spend time up high, where they

prefer to be, using natural foraging behaviors as they pull lettuce pieces and other goodies out

through small openings in the bucket.

• Black widow spider for the new Spectacular Spiders! display in Barnyard

• Pair of Gray foxes that were permanently injured in the wild and rescued by the Humboldt Wildlife Care Center

• Crested screamer chicks (our second successful nesting season for this pair)

• Cedar waxwings, also permanently injured, were released into the Aviary to join our existing small flock

• California roach – these are fish, not insects! We added 10 to the Western pond turtle tank to create more a more dynamic viewing experience

• Three Scarlet ibis, hatched at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., joined our two older Sacred ibis to create a mixed ibis flock in the Aviary

Education is central to our mission, and we strive to combine fun and learning. 2009 was filled with popular programs for youth; below is a sample of education disguised as fun!

120 kids attended Zoofari Adventure classes and had a blast making enrichment for the animals, studying their behaviors, dissecting owl pellets to learn what they eat and sharing stories about wildlife and our animal ambassadors.

Youth Assistant Keepers (YAKs) work side-by-side with Barnyard keepers gaining experience with domestic animal husbandry, earning merit pins, and helping create the county’s best compost!

2,422 Over 2,000 students visited the Zoo from schools all over the Northcoast region.
