Why the Zoo?

The Woodland Park Zoo has programs for supporting Washington’s Science Standards.

Many programs provide valuable explorations to enrich Seattle’s Science Curriculum (NSRC/STC science kits).

Animal encounters and supporting information can spark student interest in conservation.

The zoo provides a safe, meaningful experience for inquiry-based learning to extend classroom experiences.

Zoo Rules• One chaperone is

needed for every 6 students

• The zoo does not have any lockers for lunches, but you are welcome to bring your own food and picnic.

• Stay on the paths.

• Do not tap on the glass or agitate the animals.

• Do not throw anything into the exhibits.

• Keep your volume low.

ZEST: Soaked or Parched?

Adaptations in the African Savanna.

• Students explore the role of water in the lives of African mammals found on the savanna including: hippos, zebras, and giraffes.

• Students learn the differences between wet and dry seasons and how they impact plants, animals, and people.

• Chaperones will assist with station observation activities.

School-to-Zoo: Farm and Fabric

• Uses observation skills learned in the Animals 2 by 2 curriculum and NSF fabric unit

• Focuses on cows, chickens, and goats.

• Students explore how fleece becomes fabric from sheep’s wool.

Programs led by naturalist for 4th-7th graders.

Aligned to WA Science Standards.

Habitats and Wildlife of Washington.

Indoor presentation followed by inquiry-based outdoor exploration for students to apply knowledge and skills.

• The Zoo Edition is a twice yearly teacher newsletter that highlights the ozo’s programs and registration information.

• The zoo also offers several professional development classes for credit on Saturdays.
