What’s new at Lincoln Park Zoo? Looking back at the amazing yearbehind us, I can say we had a different answer nearly every week, eachone reflecting our commitment to defining excellence for zoos in the21st century.

Most prominently, there were new faces among the species in ourcare. A new African lion, Sahar, now looks down from the famous perchat the Kovler Lion House. We welcomed a Grevy’s zebra colt and twotakin babies, arrivals who—in the spirit of our times—received theirnames from fans of the zoo through an online poll.

We embraced a novel twist on our groundbreaking work with gorillas, featuring the first all-male bachelor troop in the zoo’s his-tory. We welcomed two babies for this critically endangered species—females Patty and Nayembi. And we established a new standard forworld-class care after Nayembi suffered an injury that required deli-cate surgery and months of around-the-clock nurturing.

Familiar faces filled exciting new roles in conservation and science, with Lisa Faust, Ph.D., stepping up as the department’s newvice president and Steve Ross, Ph.D., becoming director of the LesterE. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. Increased re-sponsibilities haven’t stopped them from pushing boundaries withtheir own research, examining the sustainability of zoo populationsand the intricacies of how chimpanzees learn and think.

Perhaps the biggest leap forward, though, was the February creation of the Hurvis Center for Learning Innovation and Collaboration. Led by Senior Director Leah Melber, Ph.D., andfunded by a generous $3 million gift from the Hurvis CharitableFoundation, the Hurvis Center will explore new approaches for science education.

By giving expert educators—and researchers—the freedom to ex-plore, the Hurvis Center will find new ways to connect learners withthe natural world. It will pair a local focus with a global reach, shar-ing discoveries with partners around the globe.

It’s an exciting change in a year filled with them, all reflecting Lin-coln Park Zoo’s commitment to conservation, education and care.Thank you for your abiding support, a great constant that enables usto explore these uncharted frontiers…including new ones to come.

Conservation & ScienceAn accomplished year highlights familiar faces and world-class research.

Zoo conservation and science welcomed a new leader this year as Lisa Faust,Ph.D., was named the department’s new vice president, a position overseeing nearly50 scientists conducting work at the zoo and around the globe. Faust started hercareer as a zoo intern and was most recently director of the Alexander Center forApplied Population Biology. Her appointment followed a nationwide search, onethat concluded the best candidate was already at the zoo.

Beyond supervising zoo research, Faust continued her own groundbreakingwork. This year she unveiled the PMCTrack software tool, which lets Associationof Zoos and Aquariums institutions track and evaluate the outcomes of recom-mendations to move or breed individual zoo animals. Faust and her team also cre-ated models to assess the long-term sustainability of zoo populations ranging frombears to big cats. Finally, she developed a framework for evaluating animal medianlife expectancies, enabling zoos across the country to speak authoritatively aboutthe animals in our care.

Another familiar face assumed a new role as Steve Ross, Ph.D., was named di-rector of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes inJune. Previously the center’s assistant director, he’s known for research into apebehavior and cognition as well as tireless efforts to improve chimpanzee well-beingthrough projects like Lincoln Park Zoo’s Project ChimpCARE.

A world away, zoo scientists celebrated a conservation milestone as the zoo-ledSerengeti Health Initiative vaccinated its 1 millionth dog against rabies and dis-temper in April 2012. The long-running effort has checked the spread of disease tothe Serengeti’s people—and keystone predators like lions and African wild dogs. Asa result, African wild dogs are once again living in the Serengeti ecosystem…andrabies cases have dropped to zero. This world-class conservation effort was thefocus of a special three-part series in the Chicago Tribune, underscoring the zoo’simpact in one of Africa’s signature ecosystems.

Another African research site—the Republic of Congo’s Goualougo Triangle—had exciting developments as well. In September, this untouched ecosystem re-ceived a conservation boost as the United Nations World Heritage Committeenamed 10,000 square miles of nearby forest a World Heritage Site.

In addition to the accomplishments abroad, conservation work in the zoo’s back-yard remains a focus. Scientists with the Urban Wildlife Institute expanded theirUrban Wildlife Biodiversity Monitoring Project to include audio monitoring forthe region’s bats. Biologists continued to work with the Lake County Forest Pre-serve District to release smooth green snakes into the wild. Finally, the hatch of 18ornate box turtles at the zoo marked a successful start to a partnership with the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service to restore the threatened species to southern Illinois.

Lincoln Park Zoo researchers continued work to help the larger zoo commu-nity. Yvonne Nadler, D.V.M., and her partners at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the U.S. Department of Agriculture developed a work-ing group to prepare zoos for a potential outbreak of avian influenza. The Popu-lation Management Center collaborated with species managers across the countryto produce breeding and transfer recommendations for 83 species, covering animals from snow leopards to lined seahorses.

Beyond these highlights, the entire department perpetuated its conservation andscience leadership locally, regionally and globally. Their efforts included the pub-lication of 31 scientific papers, 56 presentations at scientific conferences and thementoring of 12 Ph.D./master’s students and 40 undergraduate interns.

Long known for groundbreakingwork with gorillas, Lincoln Park Zooembarked on a new milestone in wel-coming its first gorilla bachelor group.The all-male troop is composed of juve-niles Amare, Azizi, Mosi and Umande.Amare and Azizi grew up at RegensteinCenter for African Apes while Mosi andUmande came from Little Rock Zooand Columbus Zoo. The lively groupdisplays plenty of adolescent play.

In welcoming the bachelors, the zoosaid goodbye to silverback JoJo and females Tabibu and Makari, who de-parted for Brookfield Zoo, ColumbusZoo and Kansas City Zoo. A farewellparty was held, complete with messagesfrom friends of the zoo and a massiveice cake.

The traditional gorilla family groupled by silverback Kwan saw an influx ofyouthful energy as females Bana andRollie gave birth in October and November 2012. The group welcomedtwo girls—Patty and Nayembi—al-though Nayembi moved behind thescenes in February to recover from aninjury sustained on exhibit. Thanks toa quick response and expert care, she’shealing well. Animal care staff hope toreintroduce her to her family in theyear ahead.

The zoo welcomed new arrivals awayfrom Regenstein Center for AfricanApes as well. A new male lion, Sahar,took the iconic spot at the head of thepride at the Kovler Lion House. A 3-year-old from the Bronx Zoo, Saharcontinues to grow in the exhibit heshares with female Myra.

The Antelope & Zebra Area wel-comed a zebra colt in August and twobaby Sichuan takins in February. Allthree males were named with the helpof fans of the zoo in online polls. Thezebra was dubbed Kito, which means“jewel” in Swahili, and the two tinytakins were named Xing Fu andMengyao, which mean “happy good for-

tune” and “superior handsome-ness” in Mandarin.

The human side of AnimalCare saw some new faces as well.In March, Sunny Nelson wasnamed Hope B. McCormickCurator of Birds. She came tothe zoo in 2010, first as leadkeeper and then zoologicalmanager of the area. Her ex-pertise and enthusiasm makeher a perfect fit to care for theflock and expand local conser-vation efforts.

Plenty of chicks peeked theirheads out of zoo nests last year.The McCormick Bird Housewelcomed two clutches of Balimynahs, significant arrivals fora species that’s critically endan-gered in the wild. Other hatchesincluded European white storks,fairy bluebirds, a sunbittern, aBlyth’s hornbill, a green-napedpheasant pigeon, a Guam Micronesian kingfisher (extinctin the wild), crested wood partridges, swan geese, golden-breasted starlings, Bourke’s parrots and blue-gray tanagers(both zoo firsts).

On the mammal side, a tinyMoholi bushbaby emerged fromits tree den at Regenstein SmallMammal–Reptile House in February.The Bolivian gray titi monkey breedingpair also welcomed their ninth offspringat the Helen Brach Primate House inAugust.

Babies weren’t the only new arrivals,of course. The zoo welcomed red riverhogs, spotted hyenas, Kenya crestedguineafowl, servals, ostriches, cactusmice, a male red kangaroo, a femaleklipspringer and an all-female Africanwild dog pack. These changes reflect thecommitment of zoos across the countryto working together to sustain species.

Finally, the zoo once again received

the key seal of approval from the Asso-ciation of Zoos and Aquariums Accred-itation Committee. After a rigorousinspection and review process, the AZArenewed our accreditation in September,reinforcing Lincoln Park Zoo’s commit-ment to world-class conservation, education and care.

Animal CareChange was a constant in a busy year of new arrivals, with the

zoo’s famous gorillas at the heart of the transition.

The zoo’s status as a learning leaderachieved a new milestone this past year:the February launch of the Hurvis Centerfor Learning Innovation and Collabora-tion. Funded by a generous $3 million giftfrom the Hurvis Charitable Foundation,this innovative center will use cutting-edge research and programs to explorehow zoos, aquariums and museums canmost effectively engage their audiences.Led by Senior Director Leah Melber,Ph.D., the Hurvis Center will partner withschools down the street and institutions aworld away—all to find the best ways tolearn about science and nature.

Initial offerings include Career Explorersand the Research Apprenticeship Program,both giving Chicago-area students the chanceto explore careers in zoos and research. Theupcoming Partnerships in Fieldwork pro-gram will enlist students and teachers to col-lect wildlife data from monitoring stations setup on school grounds as part of the zoo’sUrban Biodiversity Monitoring Project.

The Hurvis Center’s Observe to Learninitiative will connect kids around the worldwith nature through self-guided animal ob-servations. The project includes a free iPad

app developed by Hurvis Center educators.It will enable users to explore animal be-havior in their backyard, local zoo or naturearea, just as the zoo’s scientists do.

Global connections were also in fullbloom last spring with the successful conclusion of the zoo’s Community of Con-servation partnership. The yearlong effortlinked students in Niger with peers at Chicago’s Francis W. Parker School. Colleagues from the National Museum ofNiger Boubou Hama traveled to Chicago toexperience the zoo, the city’s culture and aclassroom visit at the school. Their visit wasfunded through the American Alliance ofMuseums and the U.S. Department ofState’s Bureau of Educational and CulturalAffairs’ Museums and Community Collab-orations Abroad program.

This spring, learning and fun took an-other form as nearly 100 kids—4-year-oldsto fourth graders—attended the inauguralSpring Break Camp at the zoo. Focusing onthe animals of the Americas, campers tookpart in activities centered on animal diver-sity, environmental conservation and theways in which Lincoln Park Zoo cares foranimals at the zoo and protects them in thewild. Little ones used their senses to explore

everything from box turtle camouflage to acaribou pelt while older campers discoveredhow researchers travel to wild sites aroundthe globe.

Throughout the year, learners of all ageschose from an array of education programs,spotlighting subjects from animal adapta-tions to hormone research. Guests learnedabout population recovery efforts for theendangered Puerto Rican parrot anddanced to a live salsa band after-hours atWine & Wildlife: Puerto Rican Plumage onNovember 7. The popular evening seriesalso highlighted animal courtship behav-iors—and select vintages—at its Animal Attractions program on Valentine’s Day.

Finally, animal attractions that causeharm were the message of Primates Don’tMake Good Pets. This new initiative educatesthe public on the destructive consequencesof keeping monkeys and apes as pets. It alsohighlights how to support proper steward-ship of these amazing species.

EducationAn innovation center with global reach opened its doors, and visitors of all ages continued to enjoy learning about nature.

The Observe to Learn app produced by the newHurvis Center for Learning Innovation and Col-laboration offers an exciting tool for connectinglearners with nature. Other fun learning experi-ences included a new Spring Break Camp.

The Women’s Board of Lincoln ParkZoo scored a roaring success July 13 withZoo Ball 2012. Themed “The GreatCatsby,” the gala chaired by Suzanne A.Meder and Cindy Ross Polayes trans-ported more than 1,000 guests to the ele-gance of the Hamptons for an evening ofcocktails, entertainment and gourmetdining. The best treat of all: more than$1.2 million raised for the Women’s Boardpledge toward Nature Boardwalk at Lin-coln Park Zoo. Generous support was pro-vided by presenting sponsor GuggenheimPartners, LLC; silver sponsor J.N.Pritzker/Tawani Foundation/Pritzker Mil-itary Library; and entertainment sponsorsMarcus Lemonis and Beth Levine. Addi-tional support was given by Sentient Jetand United Airlines.

Zoo-ologie, the Auxiliary Board ofLincoln Park Zoo’s annual fundraiser, wel-comed more than 1,000 people to its sold-out, upscale cocktail party on June 1, 2012.Guests savored gourmet bites from trend-setting Chicago restaurateurs while pro-viding support the zoo relies on to remainfree and open. ZooLights Presented by ComEd andCharter One welcomed a record-setting420,000 guests to enjoy the spectacle of 2million brilliant lights. Last June, thousands of runners triedfor personal bests during United Run forthe Zoo. United Airlines, New BalanceChicago, Lifeway Kefir, Starfruit CaféArcelorMittal, Midwest Foods, The BeldenStratford and Walgreens supported thishighlight of the Chicago running calendar.

Thousands of participants also tappedtheir feet to Neon Trees, Hedley, BetterThan Ezra, Tony Lucca, Hot Chelle Raeand Allstar Weekend during the summer’sJammin’ at the Zoo concert series. Thanks

Hopping of a different sort took placeat the zoo’s inaugural Easter Egg-strava-ganza on April 7, 2012. Visitors met theEaster Bunny at the Farm-in-the-Zoo andenjoyed an egg hunt and outdoor breakastbuffet. The second, held on March 30, 2013,was even better—a sell-out!

Adults and parents with toddlersstretched out during another season ofYoga at the Zoo Presented by Walgreens.Classes took place from June to Septem-ber in a spectacular outdoor location: theNature Boardwalk’s Peoples Gas Educa-tion Pavilion. Thanks to Walgreens andcontributing sponsor LUNA.

Natural beauty was also on displayWednesday, August 1, during the Wine &Wildflowers Garden Party hosted by Lincoln Park Zoo’s Garden & SculptureCommittee and event chair Margo Morris. Guests enjoyed live bluegrassmusic, barbecue bites and wine on theverdant shore of the Hope B. McCormickSwan Pond.
