Dear Members,

National Day celebrations are just over and for those involved in the preparations, thank you very much. Time flies and we are nearly at the end of the year. If you are making year-end holiday plans do read up on our affiliated clubs feature here and in previous issues.

We will be having our mooncake festival where the kids get to walk the golf course with their lanterns, we certainly hope that the haze will not affect our events. The Seasports Centre successfully held an open house. Also “The King of Fruits” lovers aka Durian Lovers got to enjoy our sold out inaugural Durian buffet event. Flip inside for a report and photos of this event.

Our bungalows now come with new BBQ shelters to protect you against the elements and for Kranji, we have updates on the new Wifi hotspot and buggy path improvement works.

Our members have done well in golf and bowling. A Junior Development Squad member won the Singapore HSBC youth challenge tournament whilst our bowlers won several medals at the “Trios” bowling competition. Many congratulations and we have included their exploits inside.

On the golfing scene, we followed our golf maintenance team to learn more about their work. We have our regular Golf 101 feature on rules and another by the professional experts with tips to improve your scores. Singapore Golf Association (SGA) have implemented a Central Handicapping System (CHS) and golfers have to register to maintain their USGA handicap. The process is quick and painless and information is provided under Greenside Matters article. Please register now if you have not done so.

Have fun, cheers

C onstant Wind at NSRCC Sea Sports Centre, held their Open House on Saturday 6th

August 2016.

Members of NSRCC and sea sport enthusiasts were able to enjoy free rides on the centre’s sailing boats and the ever so popular banana boat. Coaches from Constant Wind were present to provide free beginner lessons on stand up paddling, windsurfing and kayaks. The morning session started at 10.30am until lunchtime at 12 noon. The fun started all over again in the afternoon session at 2pm, but spirits were not dampened as it had to end by about half an hour earlier at 4.30pm due to bad weather.

The centre also organised a windsurfing marathon during the Open House! Race participant’s sailed from the Centre to Tanah Merah Beacon, Keta Beacon, Bedok Buoy and back to the centre, covering a distance of approximately 10km. Without a doubt, everyone had a great time!

See you again next year!

Celebrating Our Nation’s Birthday in a Special Way!S ingaporeans hold National Day close to their

hearts, as it commemorates our nation’s independence. Staff of NSRCC celebrated this significant day with a slight twist, one that would in turn help save another person’s life.

On 10th August, we set our sights on a meaningful cause, all decked in red as we made our way to the Bloodbank @HSA. That’s right, blood donation was on the agenda!

Our enthusiastic staff reached the centre at 2pm,all ready to get right into it! After the completion of a mandatory questionnaire, all of us were eagerly awaiting our turn to see the doctor for a check-up which would be a make or break, as it decided if we were able to donate. Fortunately, our group of troopers were in the pink of health, and ready to start the blood donation process!

The group of staff who went, were truly an interesting mix! We had our first timers, and we also had people who had already been donating blood for years. Needles weren’t really an issue, because at the back of all our minds, we knew this was going to help someone in dire need of it. After donating, we rested, replenished our energy with some sweet and savoury treats and weregood to go!

Did you know that a single blood donation can help save up to three lives? The staff who participated in this walked out of the blood bank feeling that we had done something very meaningful. We were able to contribute to our society by such a simple act of goodness. Besides, what greater gift is there, than the gift of life?

Sri is a familiar face at NSRCC Changi’s golf counter, but did you know she is an avid blood donor?

All prepped up to do good and donate blood!

A long time donor and a first time donor, Rashid and Alvin here to start saving lives!

A big smile and all set to get into donating his blood for a good cause!

Looks like he is all ready to start donating blood!

Meet our Blood Donation Troopers!

No needle can hold us back!

Actually, it’s not really that painful. It’s just a small prick in your arm and our trained nurses will apply a local anaesthetic first, so you’ll hardly feel a thing. Getting pricked by a durian, now that hurts!

A Day in the Life of……A ll our golfers always look forward to their game of golf at our courses, be it at NSRCC Changi or Kranji. The

work that goes into keeping our greens and fairways ready for play, goes beyond what the eyes can see. In this edition of Resort View, meet part of the team from Changi who work from the wee hours of the morning, and under the sweltering sun to make sure that the grooming of our courses are up to par!

(L) - ( R) Richard Ho (Assistant Foreman), Gee Hai Kwang (Greens Specialist) & Foo Kah Seong (Foreman)

The three men wait patiently in their buggies, before driving out to our 10th tee to demonstrate some of the daily duties that they do. “We’ve never really been interviewed before, so it is a change from merely just getting our jobs done today, we get to show everyone behind-the-scenes of what we are passionate about doing!” said foreman Foo Kah Seong excitedly. He has been with NSRCC for 17 years after working as a carpenter in Johor, and is part of the Course Maintenance team. In a supervisory capacity, Kah Seong’s list of duties goes beyond assisting our Course Superintendent in inspecting course conditions. Equipped with a vital knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in landscaped area maintenance, he leads his team to ensure that all activities for the upkeep of the course are carried out promptly.

Next in line to Kah Seong is Assistant Foreman Richard Ho, holding the fort when duty calls. Richard who hails from Kota Tinggi in Malaysia, came from an entirely different background as a plastic mould maker, before setting his sights on NSRCC 7 years ago when he felt he needed a change, and has never looked back since. “It takes a lot of dedication to get our courses prepped daily. Our day begins as early as 4AM, when we wake up to get ready for the day. What I love about this job is that it keeps me on my toes, and I like constantly being occupied, so this to me is perfect.” Richard says, as his face lights

up with a smile.

Hai Kwang on the other hand, has been a Greens Specialist with the club for 6 years. He proudly says with

a smile that he is from the same town in Malaysia as Richard and looks forward to the weekly trips he takes back home to see his family after carrying out his scope of work diligently. “My duties include bunker raking and mowing of the greens, it does take a long time to do, but it is extremely rewarding when you take a look at

the course once it has been maintained.” he says as he talks about his tasks.

All of them agree that the job does offer great incentives, but one of the greatest would bethe friendships that have been forged within the team itself, and with the members they meet. “Our families do not stay in Singapore with us, so after all these years, our colleagues and club members have become our family since we see each other so often.” Kah Seong says. A lot of elbow grease is involved in the upkeep of the courses, but what makes it even more special, is knowing the amount of dedication and passion which goes into making our courses playable in both our locations when you look at our perfectly kept fairways.

We admire the tenacity that these three guys put in daily in their jobs, and they also speakof the same zeal that our entire Course Maintenance team puts into their work. Soif you see them on the course during your next game, give them a high-five perhaps?

To maintain good playing conditions, Richard demonstrates raking the

bunkers on our course!

Foo Kah Seong weeding the fairways to ensure that the turf is smooth and ready for play.

Ready, Steady…. The Three Guys in Action on the Course!

DOWNSWING WITH A SPLASHBy Edmund Tan, Head of Golf Instruction & Custom Fitting, Mizuno

“H ow do I start the downswing?” and “What starts the

downswing?” are the questions often asked by many golfers, including myself when I was a junior. Is it pulling the grip, spinning the hips, turning the shoulders or sliding the knees? The answer to a good downswing sequence is to start from the ground upward with the focus on the left foot. Take a good look at the image, you would want to start from the left foot splashing into the casual water (lateral weight shift), then continue with the hip turn, chest turn, arms swinging down, and finally the club striking the ball.

This sequence is the best way to strike the ball solidly. Despite different swing styles from players such as Bubba Watson and Luke Donald, both of them are able to get the job done with an identical downswing sequence.

If you are struggling with thin and fat shots or you are lacking the ability

to compress the ball into the ground which maximises the club and ball performance, then this image here is great for you. Also, if you have a tendency to scoop the ball into the air or have your weight hanging back on the right side, this will drive some new sensations your way. If you can’t seem to make this aggressive move to the left foot, you will probably have to examine the quality of your physical movement. This is because our body work in an alternating pattern of stable segments connected by mobile joints and if this pattern is altered, you will not be able to achieve this downswing sequence for the best swing efficiency.

Confused? I am sure. Take a look at the image on the right where purple highlights are built to be stable and the green highlights are joints built to be mobile. Since this article’s main focus is on the left foot, let’s use it as the example. It is vital to have your left foot to be in balance and acts as the pillar to

support your golf swing when you turn though the finish swing. Now if you have difficulties staying in balance on your left foot, that means your feet are now mobile and that will cause your ankles no choice but to be stable to support the feet movement.

That is the wrong patter and you are more likely to hang back in your swing and hit poor shots. You may also have to compensate something for a chance to strike the ball decently. That being said, you are less likely to achieve an efficient swing. Go ahead and give this move a try. Start your downswing with a splash on your left foot, follow by turning your hips, chest, hands and then club at impact.

If you are still struggling with this move, find one of us at Mizuno Golf School for a physical assessment and prescription of golf drills, and you will soon be on your way to solid shots.

I f there was ever a success story to be told about a young golfing

talent involved in NSRCC’s Junior Golf Development Program (JGDP), then here it is...The Brandon Han Story.

Brandon is starting to understand that golf is a game of irony. To shoot low scores, one cannot remain squarely focused on shooting low scores, to beat other players, one cannot remain squarely focused on beating other players. To win tournaments, one cannot remain squarely focused on winning tournaments. Golf must be played the right way and for the right reasons. Awards, recognition and trophies, if they are to be had, must follow as natural consequences of hitting great shots. The ability to hit great shots must come from the passion for learning and playing the game. Brandon loves playing the game, loves the pursuit of excellence in golf. This is a very important lesson for Brandon and anyone for that matter, who wants to achieve greatness.

Nothing has ever come easy for Brandon, whatever he has achieved in golf he has done so through good old fashioned hard work. Coming off a solid year last year without a victory (had a 2nd and a 3rd placing), this year has been a different story for the young man. He was accepted to involve himself in the SGA National Ranking Games late last year which pits his skills up against the strongest fields in the country. That was a great wake-

up call for him to raise the bar on his own work ethic if he was to achieve his goals. And I believe he has responded and stepped up to the plate. Brandon has also been selected for the NSRCC Junior Golf Development Programme for the past 4 years, which he has benefitted from tremendously!

In April this year he held off the field in his age division at Inter-School Nationals held at Marina Bay Golf Course, pulling off his first major victory, a moment he relished and will remember forever. Then during the June school holidays, he came from behind with a final round 73 to rally and pull off his second victory at the HSBC Youth Challenge held at Sembawang Country Club. It was obvious that Brandon had gained a taste for success at Nationals and now had a real belief in his ability to do it again. Losing can be a habit if it happens often enough but then by the same token, so can winning. Brandon was learning how to win.

In his first real overseas golf tournament, the Hong Kong Junior Open held in early August at Hong Kong Golf Club, Brandon performed admirably with a 5th place finish. These are all necessary experiences

on route to the bigger picture of Brandon reaching his longer term goals. Keep pushing to get better, this is an endless journey… and that’s the same for all of us who aspires for great golf. Tiger Woods

once said that “there are two opponents in the game: yourself and the golf course. If you can somehow combat those two, you’ll do all right.” This is the new lesson for Brandon to wrestle with now and in all honesty, going forward, the majority of his progress will be through mental revelations that he learns along his journey. Physically his game is on the right path but mentally he still has much to learn despite the massive progress he has made in this area of late.

Fellow golf enthusiasts, keep an eye on this kid. Please say hi to him when you can, he is a very pleasant, humble young man with huge potential who can really “golf his ball.” Brandon Han folks….

1. Responsibility of Players:Every player shall at all times be responsible for protecting and preserving the good condition of the golf course. Responsibility for any damage incurred by the striking of a golf ball belongs to every player. Therefore, let’s do our part to help to maintain the condition of course and repair damages that are caused by the striking of our clubs.

2. Bunkers:The simple guide would be to rake all footprints and furrows caused by the clubs striking the ball. In raking the sand, please level it as soon as you have played from it. Before you exit the bunker, ask yourself, would I be upset if I had to play from that spot?

3. Divots:Please help to repair any divots that you see by using sand bottles. Nothing is more perturbing to a golfer than when he/ she has executed a good shot but finds the ball landing in a divot.

4. Greens:Any damage to the putting green made by the player or his or her ball must be repaired before the player leaves the green. Follow the fix three rule. (When going on the green, fix your ball mark and an additional two.)

5. Littering on the Course:Trash bins are placed at convenient locations throughout the course and should be used by all players for disposal of all waste. Please take good care of the golf course and dispose your cigarette butts into the trash bins provided.

6. Chipping at the Tee-boxPlease refrain from practising chipping at the tee-boxes to preserve conditions of the tee boxes. Golfers may want to note that marshals will be going around and if you are observed not to discharge your responsibility above, you may be asked to do so. Please cooperate. Otherwise, they will take down your particulars and repeat offenders may be served caution notices.

NEW SGA CENTRALISED HANDICAPPING SYSTEMOn 4 August 2016, the SGA launched the Centralised Handicapping System. Since then, many of our members have already registered with the CHS. However, many more members still have not. This is a reminder that it is compulsory for all golfers to be registered with CHS to maintain their USGA handicap status with the SGA. Members who have not registered with CHS when the CHS comes into full operations will be deemed not to have a valid USGA handicap indexmaintained by SGA. This will also mean that:

a. You will not be able to participate in golf tournaments such as Monthly Medal, Club Competitions, other National Competitions, etc.

b. You may face complications when claiming hole-in-one prize if you have a hole-in-one. Most insurance companies would require proof of USGA Handicap Index when processingsuch claims.

Golfers who have missed registering for CHS will still be able to do so. The process is similar and when their CHS account is activated golfers may start posting their scores immediately.Golfers’ handicap history from NHB will be retained as at the 1st August 2016 revision. However, their newly calculated handicap data will only be displayed at the next revision date

If you have not done so yet, it is still not too late. Register directly now for the SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) by logging into https://chs.sga.org.sg/#/

Enjoy Golfing.

Greenside Matters

CARE OF OUR COURSE

Tan Kah hanClub Captain

For many golfers, the condition of the golf course is one of the key factors that will affect his/her golfing experience or the reason that they joined the club. A golf course is also a living, breathing thing. Creating a quality golf course is

not the responsibility of the Club’s maintenance crew alone. It’s also the responsibility of every member/golfer.. The action or inaction of golfers can have significant impact on the condition of the golf course.

Since the beginning of August 2016, the lady golfers of NSRCC have been looking forward to their weekly tee and shots on our green fairways, with Ladies Vice Captain Ms Jenny Chong. Potential Rules Situations on the New 1st TeeIn this mini-series, we’ll be covering potential situations you might find yourself in when playing the new 9 holes at NSrCC.

F rom the tee, the water hazard that crosses the fairway is not visible. To the left, there is a netting protecting the green of Hole 5. If your ball ends up near the netting, you are entitled to a free drop only if it interferes with your

stance or intended area of swing. If the netting is in your line of play, you are not entitled to free relief.

If your ball enters the water hazard (yellow stakes) you may proceed under Rule 26-1 or make use of the drop zone provided.

Further along to the far left of the 2nd half of the fairway, green, there is our signature waterfall which is designated as a lateral water hazard (red stakes)

Golf 1-0-1 contributor Brian Tan is a member of the Greens Committee, and oversees Rules and Tournaments at NSRCC. When he’s not busy officiating as a Rules Official, he can be found losing balls in NSRCC’s water hazards.

The Green is surrounded by lateral water hazards. To the rear of the green, if you’re lucky enough to overshoot and land on the bridge, you may play the ball as it lies, or take relief under Rule 26-1. If you wish to play as it lies, you may ground the club on the bridge as the bridge is not the ground or water in the hazard (Rule 13-4).

An Evening with the King... of FruitsW hat do you get when you put a group of avid

durian lovers and a free flow buffet of some of the finest selections of this fine delicacy? That’s right, you get NSRCC’s inaugural Durian Fiesta held on 9th July 2016 @ The Courtyard of our Changi location!

A whopping 70 eager participants who signed up for this tasty event, came as early as 5PM, in hopes of satisfying their rumbling tummies with piquant offerings of Mao Sang Wang, XO D24, lychees, longans and rambutans galore! Not to mention a refreshing drink of fresh coconut juice, to wash everything down.. There was plenty for everyone, with 150 kg worth of Mao Shan Wang as well as 60 kg of D24 and the various sides of exotic fruits!

Entertainment was not short either, as Lawrence who was the emcee for the evening ensured that guests also had fun with a variety of games, and of course in line with the theme, winners were allowed to bring home durians as prizes!

A lucky draw was also held during the festivities in which, 5 lucky winners were presented their prizes by Mr Patrick Too, Vice-Chairman of the Resort & Facilities Committee.

With the scent of durians wafting through the air, and wonderful weather for all to enjoy, we are very sure everyone who participated walked away extremely happy. We look forward to hosting another round of our Durian Fiesta and hope to see you again next year.

Buggy Park Under Construction (for 12 buggies)

With 40 of our enchanting bungalows equipped with picturesque settings, there’s no holding back to plan that perfect celebration or staycation! The latest addition of a BBQ shelter at each unit promises to let the bonding and cooking over the hot pit continue through any weather situation!

ChangiNSRCC

Our pearl of Neo Tiew Lane definitely has some good news to share! Currently still in the making, keep your eyes peeled for a buggy path that would lead golfers to the staircase near the Golfers’ Terrace (which is also equipped with Wi-Fi!)! This will definitely make it easier for golfers to order and pick up their food, and cut down the time needed for turning around for both nine-hole courses. The bridge at the back of the 4th green leads to the 5th tee box, and is intended to speed up play. It connects the current buggy path on the side of the 5th tee box to a newly constructed path at the back of the 4th green. Look out for the buggy park near the stairs for golfers to park their buggies in the event of inclement weather, and it can accommodate up 12 buggies.
