HelpuscarpettheAmericanGardenwithbluebells.Youmayhavenoticedthat inmostofthe area, the rampant growth of brambles in amongst the rhododendrons is now undercontrol. This is thanks for the most part to the efforts of successive corporate teamsengagedbyidverde’sDevelopmentManagerAndyRobinson.Thisautumnseesourthirdsuccessiveplantingofnativebluebells.Theimagebelowshowssomebloomsfromtheproductiveplanting inautumn2017.Wehaveprocuredthousandsmorebulbsforthisyear’seffort.
Docomealongandhelpinthisepicproject–itwillbehugelysatisfyingtoseethefruitsofyourlaboursintheSpring.Meetattheparkcaféat10amorjoinusintheAmericanGardenlater.Stoutgloves(wehavesomespares)andshoeswelcome.CommercialeventsintheparkMembers will be aware that several commercial events took place in the park over thesummer.TheseincludedregularslikeTheLunaoutdoorcinemaandoneortwonewones,suchas‘Tinseltown’,whichtookplaceovertwodaysinJune.Withcontinuingbudgetcuts,we recognise theneed forSouthwarkCouncil to raise fundsfromdifferentsources–indeedtheiraimisforeventsstaffandprocesstobeself-financing.

Howeverafreeleisurefacilityliketheparkisararephenomenonthesedays,highlyvaluedbythoseuserswhocannototherwiseeasilyaccessoutdoorspace.Unfortunately,SouthwarkhasoftennotifiedtheFriendsfor‘consultation’onproposalsatapointwhen it is too late toalterplans, althoughwe succeeded inmodifying someof thepractical aspects in some cases. The Friends subsequently attended a meeting withSouthwarkEvents,alongwithTheDulwichSociety,atwhichSouthwarkacknowledgedthattheprocesshadnotbeenacceptableonacoupleofoccasionsthisseason–andprovidedreassurancethatmoretimewillbegivenforeffectiveconsultationinthefuture.Ifanyonehasanyfeedbackonthissummer’sevents,orsuggestionsfortheFriendstoputtotheCouncil,pleaseletusknowattheemailaddressabove.LewishamConcertBandreturnedforsoundsinthesun–9thSeptemberThe popular Lewisham Concert Bandreturned in September for anotherconcert that spanned the musicalspectrumfromjazztoclassicalandpopinbetween. Perfectweatherprovided idealconditions for the concert to attract anattentive audience, with park visitors inlargenumbersouttoenjoythesun.Procured by the Friends through a grantfrom Southwark Council, the plan is torepeattheeventnextyear.Theshrinkinglake
Withthehottestsummerfordecades,water levels inthelakehavereducedsubstantially.Thishasinturnimpactedonwaterqualityandhasaffectedsomeofthewildlifethatwouldtypicallybeenjoyingthelakeatthistimeofyear.
A focal point of level reduction can be seen at the lakeoutletbythebridgeontheinnercarriageway.Theheightof this needed to be raised as part of the flood reliefworks,leadingtotheconstructionofaconcreteandstonewall(seeleft-yes,trulyhideous).Ascanbeseenfromtheimage,thewaterlevelisnowherenearthatoutlet;indeedtheholdingareahasalmostdriedoutcompletely.
The lack ofwater flow and broken aerating pumps haveledtothestagnationofthewaterintherivuletbeyond,inturn allowing rampant duckweed to return. The Friendsare applying for a grant from Southwark’s Cleaner,Greener, Safer Fund to procure an expert assessment of

the state of the lake and the best way to improve the lake aeration, planting andbiodiversity.
BootsontheGroundbyTangledFeet:9th–11thNovember–afreeeventstartingattheparkcafé
InspiredbythecentenaryofthemassdemobilisationsfromWW1andthetalesofmodern-day veterans, Boots On The Ground is a promenade headphone show which invites itsaudience to exchange their shoes for a pair of Army boots and follow the intertwiningstories ofmenwho are stepping back fromwar. Can they find peace on their return tocivilianlife?
Settingout fromanArmy tent inDulwichPark, the audience formaunit, are given theirmarching orders, join a squadron of fellow civilians and embark on an hour-long walkaroundthelocalareatogether.
