Dear Parents/Carers Following the unexpected closure because of the extreme weather conditions, we are now back to normal and trying to fit in all the work missed during that period. It is our policy not to close the school unless absolutely necessary and the safety of our students must always be our priority. Unfortunately, the weather and road conditions around school last week were so severe that closure was unavoidable. The school website and our text message service will always be our means of communicating important news regarding the school and events. In the event of the school having to close, students should always log on the VLE to complete the work that will be set by the staff. We are delighted to announce that we are going “international”. On Wednesday, 8 December we welcomed a delegation from the Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle school in Avignon, South of France. I am delighted to report that plans are proceeding to arrange an exchange visit for a group of our Year 9 and Year 10 students next May. All that remains for me to say is my congratulations to the many, many students who have achieved so much in the Autumn term. We are very proud of them. Sincerest thanks to a very committed team of staff who make all these things happen and to you, the parents, for your support. MATHS AND COMPUTING NEWSMATHS AND COMPUTING NEWS What’s going on in the Mathematics Department. At the beginning of November the Mathematics Department Year 11 students sat their GCSE Mathematics examination. In preparation revision sessions were held after school and some students had been selected for extra support with one to one tuition. The results for this examination will arrive in school on the 13th January 2011. All Year 11 students will re-sit the examination in June after focusing on their weaknesses highlighted in their November examination. Year 10 students sat a Mock GCSE examination on 14th December. This was to give them experience of a full GCSE Mathematics paper. All homework has been set on www.mymaths.co.uk which is an excellent resource for catching up with missed lessons and revision. We have also added MathsWatch to the VLE, which is a talking revision guide. Students who have already used it have found it very useful. Maths problem of the month continues. The problems can be found in the library and in all Maths classrooms. We would like to encourage as many students as possible to enter. November’s winner was Louis Crook Year 9, so well done to him. Finally Mrs K.Turner left us to go on maternity leave in October and she has been replaced by Mr M. Cairns. Andrea Willis

So far this term we have successfully launched our new website (www.nevillelovett.co.uk) that we’ve been populating with the latest news, results, announcements and photos from around the school. In the new year we have plans to redesign our VLE too. Our parental engagement portal (PEP) is becoming more popular with parents who are regularly checking their child’s attendance and grades, Year 7 parents are in the process of being added and should be receiving details in the new year. Another project we’re looking at is deploying new software over the next few months, this will included Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft’s Dreamspark and Kodu for developing Windows and Xbox games.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The ICT department has had a very busy 2010. Having achieved a pass rate of 92% A*-C in the summer it is now trying to improve on that mark. This January’s entries look like achieving 91% A*-C passes with the remaining 9% expected to be completed by May. This will consolidate the improvement the department has made in the last four years. The entries for the second Graphics GCSE are also the highest the department has had and again it is looking for better results in the summer. Last term Neville Lovett invited Gifted and Talented children from the feeder schools to have taster days. A selection of year 5 and 6 pupils took part learning a range of techniques that enabled them to manipulate a variety of different images over a period of 5 weeks. Following the introduction of the Adobe Creative suite, nearly all the year groups have had the opportunity to try out Adobe Photoshop and this will be extended to using Illustrator and Flash during the remainder of the school year. The department will be introducing a girls only computer club after Christmas to try and encourage more girls to take up ICT subjects in college. This will enable them to experiment with a range of different software and become both competent and confident in their own abilities.

Thank You We have got off to a fantastic start this year and I would like to thank all of you that have been working hard to make Intrepid such a great house. I would particularly like to thank your tutors and co-tutors for all of the support that they have given to both you and me, over this term. Competition Intrepid House has got off to a good start this year with the stamps. Unlike last year this year we have started at the front. Within the inter house competitions that have taken place this term we are currently in second place, which if you remember Intrepid’s performance in previous years, is something that we should be really proud of. Fund Raising Intrepid has done really well so far this term in raising money for Charity. In the recent Children in Need fundraising day Intrepid raised the most money out of the four houses with an impressive £190.47. This was primarily from the non school uniform money,

and since then Finlay Hoskins one of our Year 7 students has brought in an additional £31.76 to add to the total, and Sophie sillence also in year 7 raised a further £20, thank you both for your efforts. In the recent Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, our Intrepid tutor rep Lauren Edwins proved her worth and did a fantastic job going around selling poppies and collecting funds. She managed to raise a respectable £35 in total, the most raised out of all four houses.

This year the Discovery team welcomed two new additions to its tutor list; Mr Willcocks who teaches ICT and who is also Head of Department, and Mr Jackson who teaches both PE and ICT. Miss Fox’s tutor group now share a tutor and we are very glad that Mrs Cooper has stepped up to the mark on the two days when Miss Fox is working beyond the school’s environs in her new role as Sports Co-ordinator. Student voice has a very important role to play within the school and this year Discovery House has provided the Head Girl, Molly Lancaster, and deputy Head Boy, Ryan Goodland, as well as our own Liam Davies, who is of course the Student House Leader for Discovery. Together with our Tutor Reps, these students are able to give voice to your views about the school, both good and bad, any changes you would like to see, and indeed anything you feel strongly about. Discovery students have also been keen to raise money for good causes and this year we raised £40.78 for the Poppy appeal, and contributed £177.46 towards Children in Need. Well done to all students who either bought a poppy or who paid one pound for the privilege of wearing their own clothes to school in lieu of school uniform.

Having begun the role as Head of House for Endeavour it was with a sense of trepidation and excitement that I took over this role following in the footsteps of Mr Edwards. It has been a steep learning curve, but one I feel that I am growing into. It has been with the support of the other Heads of House, Mr Edwards, my tutor team and the students in Endeavour that has made this transition as smooth as it has been and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have helped me. Year 7 seems to have settled well and it has been with the help of those older students that has made life easier for all. I know that we have quite a few of you involved in the production of ‘Animal Farm’ and I will certainly looking forward to going and seeing this and I hope to see the support of many from Endeavour there as well. In the recent data capture for Year 11 it would seem that the Year 11s in Endeavour should exceed the 80% school target for 5+ A*-C grades by 5%. At present we are 4% below the target of 60% 5+ A* - C including maths and English, but I am sure that with the continued hard work of those in Year 11 we will manage to exceed these targets

In the Interhouse House competitions I am pleased to be able to yet again say that Endeavour was the winning House. Don’t forget the next rounds that are coming up and ensure you participate in as many of the competitions as possible! Megan Seward, our House representative, and others within her tutor group, organised and collected money for the British Legion Poppy appeal. Thank you to all that supported the appeal - it was fantastic to think that we had done our bit for this very important appeal and to support those who have done so much for us. And finally I hope that you all have a good Christmas break and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year ready to meet all the new challenges and to continue to be the House at the top. Remember – Together we will be the best! Endeavour students contributed £178.31 towards Children in Need.

Skating Success Katrina Garland is a member of a very successful synchronised skating team. Recently, they took part in a national competition in Sheffield in which they came 2nd to a team from Scotland- this makes them the best in England!

Well done to Katrina and the rest of the skaters. Challenge students contributed £161.30 towards Children in Need.

Challenge 100%ers! Congratulations to all these students who have achieved at least 100% of their reward stamps. This can only be achieved by showing consistently high standards in all aspects of school life. These students should be very proud of themselves. Stamps are awarded in each lesson and house period for observance of the five golden rules: Behaviour, being on time, bringing equipment and HW (if due), following instructions and working to target.

Merryfields continues to offer a thriving hub of support for families with children 0-5 years in Fareham South and Fareham East. Plans have been approved for the development of the new outside area which is due to be completed in the Spring. This has been designed with the parents to create a child centred space where children can run, explore, investigate and play safely

together. It will give us much more capacity for outdoor play for local families. We now offer a Sports For Children course on Wednesdays 10-11am at West End Chapel in response to parental requests for more physical play opportunities. Yoga Bugs is a new class on Mondays 1.45-2.30pm focussing on story telling, movement and drama. This helps children to listen and be imaginative. Speakeasy has been helpful to parents by providing techniques and ideas to help parents speak to their children about more sensitive issues. Our Positive Parenting Programme continues to be oversubscribed and parents report that the course has really helped in understanding how to develop and maintain a positive relationship with their children. In the summer, families enjoyed investigating creatures such as snakes, spiders and rats with Zoo Lab. This was a rare opportunity to meet exotic creatures in a safe and controlled environment and to learn more about them. Megan, one of our Family Support Outreach Workers has now left us to spend more time with her family. Megan has worked at the centre since we opened in the summer of 2008. She has supported many families in the area as well as running groups and courses and we are very sorry to see her go. We have successfully appointed a new experienced Family Support Outreach Worker who will start in January 2011. She is skilled in Baby Massage, Positive Parenting Programme and meeting the needs of families both in groups and one to one. PE REPORTPE REPORT Year 10+11 Rugby

It has been a really positive start to the year for the year 10+11 rugby team. The students were a little apprehensive to start with but after a block of rugby during curriculum time they were soon turning up in numbers for training, come rain or shine. The team has played two games to date beating Bridgemary 27-12 and losing to Portchester 33-20. Both games were played in good spirit and the team has taken lots of positives from both encounters. As a result a number of students have been attending regular training sessions at Fareham Heathens RFC and the feedback from the club has been really positive. Congratulations to James Whitefield who made his debut for Fareham Heathens RFC against Wimborne RFC. James played second row and was voted man of the match. The team has many games to look forward to over the next few months so please come and support them. Year 8 Rugby

The year 8 rugby team got off to a tremendous start. As I write this, they are currently unbeaten in the Gosport and Fareham schools partnership. The team is improving week by week and considering this is the first time they have experienced the game they should be very proud of themselves. Lots of the team have also started playing at Fareham Heathens RFC which is great for their development. One result to note is the game against Cams Hill, they were county runners up last year so to draw with them is an amazing achievement and they scored with the last play of the game. The year 7 rugby team have worked hard during this first term. For the majority of students this has been their first experience with contact rugby and they seem to have enjoyed it. Numbers have been increasing with at least 20 students attending training on a regular basis. We even enjoyed a training session in the snow last week! They have lots to look forward to as the Gosport and Fareham floodlit league starts after Christmas which will see us pit our wits against all the local schools.

Basketball Yr 8+9 Team The year 8 & 9 boys basketball team have committed to lunchtime training sessions in order to prepare for their league matches and are working hard to progress their skills and come together as a team. They have played three games to date, but unfortunately they have not yet managed a win. They have, however, made progress each game, showing good enthusiasm and passion for the game, I am sure their first victory is just around the corner! Basketball Yr 10+11 Team The year 10 & 11 Basketball team did not have a great start to the season, losing their first game away to Crofton School; however the team did demonstrate some good play and certainly potential for future matches. After productive training sessions prior to the team’s next game, they started to work well together to strive for success: The team’s second game was to be against Portchester School, the team went out to win from the outset, starting the game strong and taking an early lead which they had maintained at half time. The team fought hard throughout the whole game, and worked well together as a team to secure an impressive win 41-29. The school is really proud of the team’s success, and wish them luck for future games.

Netball The turnout for school Netball this year has been fantastic. Training has been taking place on a Wednesday after school and all years have been present. The year 7 team has been well captained by Courtney Lewis who has been looking after the team and ensuring they turn up to matches. They have got better and better as the season has progressed and have won 80% of their matches. The year 8 team have continued to be enthusiastic and motivated with a squad of 9 students who turn up come rain or shine. The commitment for the year 9 team has been fantastic, with a regular 13 turning up for training and two squads playing. They have been reasonably successful winning a few games. The Senior team this year have been outstanding. With little training due to revision classes, the squad of 9 have won most games with high scores including Bridgemanry 32 – 2! Senior Squad members are: Carla Earle, Lauren Wallace, Amy Jones, Lauren Edwinds, Megan Seward, Jasmine Sharp, Hannah Paterson, Kiara Hughes and Molly Lancaster. The Netball season is now coming to an end but we are looking forward to the tournaments which are coming up in April. Well done to all involved.

Year 10 Football The Year 10 football team got off to an excellent start to the season and are currently unbeaten. The team has played some attractive football with them putting in some excellent performances. The results are as followed; Neville 6 Portchester 0 Neville 1 Brookfield 1 Neville 8 Bridgemary 0 Neville 5 Brune Park 0 The team will continue with their fixtures in February.

The Year 8 football team were once again enthusiastic to resume their excellent finish to Year 7. The first trials saw 25 students turn up for the session. Many had grown a few inches and were starting to fill out. It was evident in training that they could now hit the ball harder and were stronger in the challenge. It was hard to pick from the 25 however I did have to limit my team/squad to 16 on match days. Out of the 4 fixtures played this term, they won 2 convincingly, drew one and lost one – not bad for a side who lost more than they won last year. The 8-1 thrashing of Bridgemary and 10-0 demolition of Portchester were certainly highlights of the term. Noteable players were Danny Knee, Jack Stroulger, Luke Shepherd, Harrison Bilbe and Callum Parsons. All in all it was a good start to the year and they are all looking forward to more success in the Gosport and Fareham Cup that starts in February. Well done guys and keep thinking positively for the next stage of football ahead.

Years 7 & 8 Cross Country at Henry Cort, Wednesday 1st December On a very wintery and snowy Wednesday, I took 12 very keen students to represent Neville Lovett at the Gosport and Fareham Cross-Country Competition. Having gone from a team of 16 to 12 in literally 5 minutes before our departure from school, the students were under yet more pressure to get results. First to run were the Year 7 Girls, Tyana Pyne, Eleanor Price, Alicia Newman, and Paige Brown. Standing on the snowy field, getting frost bite in my left foot, I nervously waited for the first load of girls to appear over the hill. To my delight I saw all four girls within a couple of minutes of each other. We achieved a 5th, 6th, 7th, and a 14th out of approximately 35 girls! What a result! And it was only Neville Lovett’s first race! These amazing results ensured the year 7 girls winning a trophy, being first overall out of all the schools! Next were the year 7 boys. Now having the girls already winning a trophy, the boys were really under pressure to do well, and try to show the girls how it’s done. Having started with a team of four at the beginning of the week, unfortunately our team had lost a member so were out of the running to win overall. However, waiting yet again to see a familiar face to appear over the last hill, I saw Toby Roe in 10th place, followed by Matt John in 18th, then James Spratt in 32nd! What a result! Now not being able to feel my feet, I prepped the year 8 Girls, who like the Year 7 boys, were a runner short so were out of the running for a trophy. But that didn’t stop them! The first runner over the hill from Neville was Abby Cunningham, currently in 4th position and 20 yards from the line. With a lot of encouragement (certainly not ‘over-competitive teacher syndrome’) Abby accelerated past the girl holding on to 3rd place. Abby ended the race and was awarded a Bronze Medal! The next fight to the finish was Lauren Conway in 6th place, and Sophie Kemp in 8th! An amazing result! Shame we didn’t have a full team as I think we could have clinched yet another trophy! Finally, it was the Year 8 boys of Neville Lovett to finish the afternoon on a high. With only a team of 2, yet another trophy out of reach, the boys were they going to give it all they had! Jack Stroulger gave a very entertaining fight to the finish for 7th place, and Connor Flamson in 14th. After a very cold afternoon, and with 12 very exhausted students, we went for the overall results and the news that any students who came in the top 20 in their race would be invited to represent Gosport and Fareham in the Hampshire Championships in March was brilliant! I was ecstatic to see that we will in fact have 11 of our 12 students attending it (yet another cold yet exciting day)! This, I have to say, has been one of the best results and most exciting cross country competitions I have attended in the past four years! All students who ran should be very proud of themselves, and thank you for the support from parents. County Championships, here we come!

Rock Challenge Two girls are playing a computer game when one gets sucked into the game. The only way out is to complete each level be-fore the time runs out! Will it be game over? “Game Over” is the title of this Years Rock Challenge entry. 90 students have been rehearsing every Friday after school and are due to perform in the Portsmouth Guildhall on 26th April. They have been split into groups focusing on retro computer games such as Super Mario. This has been mainly choreographed by Lauren Edwins and Megan Seward in Year 11 and we would be stuck without their help! A few weeks ago a flash mob of the dance was held on the school arena for all to see. This can be seen on the school VLE (PE/Rock Challenge). We are extremely grateful to Lucketts Coaches who are sponsoring us in this and helping us out with transport to the venue.

News from the School Sports Partnership. It has been a very active start to the year for the School Sports Partnership with many events across a variety of sports for both Neville Lovett and its cluster schools. Throughout the course of this term the cluster schools have benefited from Hockey, Gymnastics and Tri-golf coaching culminating in a Hockey and Gymnastics festival where students that took part in the coaching, showed off their newly acquired skills and competed against other schools. Students also had the opportunity to take part in a Cross Country Festival which was held at Ranvilles School. The top ten runners from Years 5 and 6 and the winning school, which was St. Judes, then went onto compete at the Cross Country finals. Neville Lovett’s Physical Education department has recently introduced a Gifted and Talented programme enabling students who are identified as Gifted or Talented a chance to experience activities they may not usually partake in. The programme will kick off with a ten week climbing course in the New Year, where students will learn climbing techniques as well as working towards their NICAS award. It is our aim to keep the programme running throughout the year with a variety of activities. Forty seven Year 9 students are completing a Play Leaders and Junior Sports Leader Award this year. This will enable them to lead sport and play sessions in our cluster schools and help out at the many festivals that run over the course of the year. Students from across the school have been invited to attend a Change 4 Life student run Badminton club; this is a first for Neville Lovett. The students will be given responsibility to lead sessions, organise equipment and tournaments and look after the club fund. After attending for 8 weeks the club will be given £100 to spend as they see fit. As part of this club Daniel Price and Russel Menezes attended a Badminton Young Officials course which allows them to officiate at tournaments and competitions. Coming up……. In the New Year we will continue to offer the coaching and sports festivals in the cluster schools and introduce new and exciting clubs and programmes within Neville Lovett. An exciting, specialist trampoline club will run and we will also be taking fifteen students to Gosport Ice Rink for ten weeks of coaching. Hannah Fox

Lunchtime Activities The PE department have been running various lunchtime activities for the students at Neville Lovett. All these activities take place in either the gym or the sports hall and everybody is welcome to attend. Students must make sure they bring a pair of training shoes to wear as your school shoes are not suitable. Please check the VLE, extra curricular notice board (by the changing rooms in the sports hall) and your tutor notice boards for all available activities. PE Kit Can I remind all parents/guardians and students how important it is to bring the correct PE kit for health and safety reasons. The correct kit is as follows;

Plain white t-shirt (preferably with a collar)

Black rugby top

Black shorts

Dark tracksuit bottoms (black, navy blue, grey)

White sports socks or black football socks

Suitable footwear- football boots for activities on the field and supportive trainers for indoor use Jumpers. As the weather is getting much colder we would recommend you provide your child with a jumper. Students are not permitted to wear their school jumper. Students can wear a plain black or navy jumper/hoodie All of these items can be purchased from School Kit, ASDA and Lillywhites in Whitely.

Rock Challenge entry 2010

DRAMADRAMA The Year 11 BTEC Performing Arts On Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th November the Year 11 BTEC Performing Arts Group presented a Workshop Production of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ as part of their coursework. The 3 groups of Dancers, Musicians and Actors worked separately on key sections of the play, aiming to piece together the separate moments and scenes. The band composed most of the music, including one original song. The 2 presentations were performed in the Drama Studio and the Hall, to give the students the opportunity to perform in 2 different locations. Both evenings were a success and the students should be proud of the work they put into it.

The Actors The Prologue Year 8 Trestle Masks During this half term the Year 8 classes have been using specialist masks called the Trestle Masks (named after the theatre group). Students have worked on their physical comedy skills. Classes have been preparing their own ideas ready to perform at the end of term. School Production: ‘Animal Farm’ December 2010 At the time of writing, final rehearsals are under way for our production of Animal Farm. The technical crew have been hard at work planning the lights and sound and the actors have given up their time after school and in the evening to rehearse. Watch out for pictures in the next edition. Meanwhile, the Art department have been busy making the animal masks and the Music Department have been adapting the music for the production. Many thanks to the cast, technical and backstage crew who have worked so hard for the production.

Apple Tree Project Our Year 10 applied science group are involved in an exciting project sponsored by Fareham Transition Towns. Neville Lovett School is the first secondary school to be involved. The aim is to make Fareham a green, cleaner, more environmentally friendly place to live. Fareham use to have hundreds of orchards as the soil and climate are ideal for growing English apples, the best tasting apples in the world. We now have our own orchard of apple trees. On the 2nd of November, year 10 helped to plant 6 different varieties of apples. We will be monitoring their growth over the year, when they flower, when they leaf, and best of all when they produce apples!

On Friday 24th September the Neville Lovett School students celebrated the European Day of Languages (the official date being the 26th!). During House period they learnt how to say hello in 12 languages and had to remember 12 European flags too. They produced posters about various European countries or concentrated on flags, culture and language facts. Their posters were photographed and judged. The 4 best ones were produced by the following tutor groups (in winning order): DHFO, EJBY, ICGE and CNST. They brought respectively 400, 300, 200 and 100 points to their Houses. Well done! Mrs Lloyd
