    Board of Advisors

all solstice greetings to all o you. I have always liked this time o year; I nd itto be a good time or putting energy into ongoing and new projects. Since I amnearing the end o my term as Board President, I would like to use this column toexpress my appreciation or the Board o Directors o the Northcoast Regional Land

rust. I was drawn to the Land rust, in part, because o the Board o Directors, and thewonderul cross-section o the community that it represents. During my last ve years onthe Board, I have ound it to be an engaged, efective, and supportive group o individuals.

First, I want to thank Jack Limmer, Maya Conrad, and George Yandell who recentlylet the Board o Directors. Jack was a Board Member almost rom the beginning. He

was conscientious and steady, bringing his real estate skills to our land transactions. Icould always count on him or assistance; he was active on committees, was in charge othanking donors, and most recently volunteered a lot o his time or our 10th anniversarydinner. Maya Conrad came to the Board ater a term as our Executive Director in whichshe was responsible or establishing a strong, enduring oundation or the Land rust.On the Board, her background knowledge o the Land rust, its donors, and o grantingoundations was invaluable. George brought his wealth o experience rom Te NatureConservancy to the NRL Board and provided essential support related to real estatetransactions and in planning activities or the Land rust. All three will be missed.

Te current board includes producers Blake Alexandre o Alexandre Family EcoDairy

Farms, Lee Mora o Humboldt Grassed Bee, Jill Hackett o Ferndale Farms and JohnLima o Redwood Forest Products; attorneys Bill Bragg and Fred Neighbor; HumboldtCounty planner Martha Spencer; City o Arcata Environmental Services Director Mark

Andre; Los Bagels owner Dennis Rael, Humboldt State University Environmental Planningproessor Yvonne Everett, and Kevin McKernan, past land trust Executive Director andcurrent Caliornia Program Director or the National Conservation System Foundation.

Tis is a hard working board. We have regular monthly to bi-monthly meetings, activecommittees, yearly planning meetings and annual retreats, in addition to events and specialprojects. I continue to be appreciative o the Boards ability to resolve complex issues, as

well as Board Members willingness to provide their expertise and contacts when needed, and also their generous nancial contributions to the organization.

    Sincerely,

    Ann King SmithBoard President

    F

We welcome our new Advisors andextend a heartfelt thanks to those who

    have recently retired.

NRLTs 10-Year CelebrationWe celebrated our 10th anniversary thisyear! Over 200 community members joinedus on June 6th, to celebrate land protectionand stewardship. We raised over $5,000 and

proceeds rom the celebration will be usedto begin the design and implementation othe Freshwater Nature rail: a public accesstrail which will provide educational andrecreational opportunities or everyone inour community.

Freshwater Nature TrailWe are currently developing plans or theFreshwater Nature rail. Tis 3/4 mile trail

will ofer public access to the newly restoredFreshwater Farms Reserve. Tere will be

a boat launch to provide access or non-motorized water sports and inormationalsigns about the history, ecology, restorationand compatible agricultural uses o theproperty. We are also planning a viewingplatorm to give visitors incredible viewso the wildlie and waterways surroundingHumboldt Bays tidelands. o learn more,or to help support this project, please visit:

    www.ncrlt.org.

Lay of the LandMore than 90 people have joined us orour new Lay o the Land events, so ar. We

started Lay o the Land in 2009 to spreadthe word about the Northcoast RegionalLand rust and what we are doing toprotect and enhance our regions arms,

Early explorers who came to our regionrom the east described three very diferenttypes o landscapes experienced in succes-sion as they approached the Pacic Coast.

First they traversed a tangled knot o terrainwe now call the Klamath Mountains, thena large expanse o open country involving amosaic o grassland prairies and oak

woodlands, and nally the lush, giantrainorests along our coasts.

Te industries that soon emerged romthese three very diferent landscapes weremining, ranching, and timber, respectively.Tat middle belt o open country hasalways been the basis o our ranchingindustry in this region. It has also alwaysbeen considered prime hunting grounds, both by Native Americans and later by

European settlers.o conserve and restore oak woodlandsis to protect a cultural heritage and tomaintain the basis o a ranching industrythat has persisted in the region or well over100 years.

It is estimated that 30 percent oHumboldt Countys historic oak woodlandshave been lost, primarily due toencroachment by Douglas r orests anddevelopment. Te resulting loss orangeland and deer oraging habitat romthis ongoing trend is an economic concernor landowners who earn their living in

large part through livestock and huntingoperations.

Tis concern and the importance otrue oak woodlands are underscored by the

spread o Sudden Oak Death, which nowthreatens do decimate tan oak acornproduction and could seriously diminishood resources or wildlie populations.

In response to growing concerns overloss o this important habitat NRL and itspartners are developing aVoluntary Oak

Woodlands Conservation andRestoration Program. Tis program willprovide direct assistance to landowners who

want to address loss or degradation o oakwoodlands on their property. A recentlyawarded Headwaters Fund Grant will allowNRL to begin development o this new

program.A healthy network o protable workinglandscapes reduces developmental pressures, keeps large tracts o land open and produc-tive, and benets ecological unctions andbiodiversity over a large amount o acreage.Tis program will help to preserve

wildlie habitat and bolster the long-termviability o ranches containing oak

woodlands by increasing access to undingand technical assistance or conservationeasements and restoration activities. Pleasecontact NRL or more inormation.
