Autumn 2011 Luke and Laura Wycliffe Bible Translators Well, we’re halfway though our training down at Wycliffe HQ. It’s hard to believe that we moved down here seven weeks ago! Praise God that we both completed the Language and Culture Acquisition course with flying colours. We are studying alongside colleagues from 18 different countries. We were able to explore how different cultural values affect decision-making and how this can all too easily lead to misunderstanding and conflict. Language & Culture Acquisition One challenging quote that we heard was that “missionaries would be more effective if they didn’t believe they were superior to us”. It came out of some research about the effectiveness of cross-cultural missionaries. We know that what we have learnt will be invaluable to us when we get on the field and work with both nationals and missionaries from around the world. The course also gave us the chance to think about how we might learn a language without any resources other than a native speaker. This included some hands on experience with Luke learning an Ethiopian language and Laura learning an PNG language for three weeks. Carol (in the photo) was Laura’s Language Resource Person. We also looked at being able to recognize, record, and produce the sounds of the world’s languages, which was both challenging and fun! We’ve just had a tumultuous week off (see the blog for more details!) before the second part of the course begins on Monday 26 th . This will be more specific to our linguistic assignment in PNG. Points for prayer: Strength for the second part of the course as the pace goes up a few notches. The continued growth of a support team (we’re now at 88%!). Luke’s has just broken his right thumb which will make assignments more tricky. Thank God that our work permit has been approved! Visa is still being processed. lukeandlaurainpng.blogspot.com Luke & Laura Warrington 271 Newcastle Road Blakelow Nantwich Cheshire CW5 7ET 01270666549 07763408609 Wycliffe Bible Translators ETP UK Campus Horsleys Green High Wycombe Bucks HP14 3XL 01494 682 266 [email protected] [email protected] Luke’s birthday 27 th May Laura’s birthday 15 th September Anniversary 21 st July 2007 Through the Bible, God can speak directly to every man, woman and child. Autumn 2011 Luke and Laura Wycliffe Bible Translators

Well, we’re halfway though our training down at Wycliffe HQ.

Language & Culture Acquisition

One challenging quote that we heard was that “missionaries would be more effective if they didn’t believe they were superior to us”. It came out of some research about the effectiveness of cross-cultural missionaries. We know that what we have learnt will be invaluable to us when we get on the field and work with both nationals and missionaries from around the world.

The course also gave us the chance to think about how we might learn a language without any resources other than a native speaker. This included some hands on experience with Luke learning an Ethiopian

language and Laura learning an PNG language for three weeks. Carol (in the photo) was Laura’s Language Resource Person. We also looked at being able to recognize, record, and produce the sounds of the world’s languages, which was both challenging and fun!

We’ve just had a tumultuous week off (see the blog for more details!) before the second part of the course begins on Monday 26th. This will be more specific to our linguistic assignment in PNG.

Points for prayer:

• Strength for the second part of the course as the pace goes up a few notches.

• The continued growth of a support team (we’re now at 88%!).

• Luke’s has just broken his right thumb which will make assignments more tricky.

• Thank God that our work permit has been approved! Visa is still being processed.

Through the Bible, God

can speak directly to every man, woman and child. But unless people have Scripture in their

heart language, they cannot read his message

of life and hope. Over 2000 languages still don’t

have even one Bible verse.
