MESSAGE FROM EDITOR – Mandy Oxlade

Dear Friends

I hope you are all keeping well. The dry sports team have

continued to do well. However a number of sports fixtures

have been affect by the awful British weather. Unfortunately

our own games became one of these. This was very

disappointing for everyone who had been involved in the

organisation of the event. The club have also had their annual

coach trip which this year was to Margate. It was a nice sunny

day, just a bit on the hot side. We went for a walk along the

sea front.

Some members of the club have been busy fund raising for

the club by taking part in the sponsored swim which was held

throughout the mouth of July.

Please remember this is your magazine and we need your

input, It does not matter how large or small it is. It can be

anything you like. I would like to thank the members who have

submitted items for this edition.

If you have anything for the next edition please either send this

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME On Sunday 8th June, 47 of us from Tring set off to the Baltic. We left Tring in a coach bound for Harwich where we joined an enormous ship called the “Jewel of the Sea” which carried over 2,000 passengers and a 1,000 crew and set off up the North Sea. The 1st day we were at sea all day so we had chance to explore the ship. There was plenty to see, a very warm indoor pool and a cooler outside one. Plenty of games to play, a big theatre, photo shops, gaming room, brasserie, dance hall and all sorts of activities. All our bedrooms had their own balconies so we could sit outside and watch the sea and ports when we docked. The second day we arrived at Copenhagen at 7.00am and left at 3.30pm the same day. We went on a shuttle bus and were able to see the statue of Hans Andersen’s Mermaid at the harbour entrance. On the fourth day we were at sea again so we had time to play the games available, swim and sunbathe by the pool. Then we travelled on to Stockholm. As we approached Stockholm we could see the Jefa Mountains and thousands of islands in the harbour. There are up to 24,000 of them. We travelled between them in our great big ship, really close, the water must be so deep, and it was lovely. We started about 5.00am and arrived in Stockholm at 9.00am. The city is lovely and we had another trip around on a bus to see the sights. On the next day we arrived in Helsinki at 10.00am. We walked around here and first went to a beautiful church built in the rocks; it was amazing so we sat there for ages enjoying the peace. We had a meal in a most unusual café and arrived back on board at 5.30pm. The next day we arrived at St Petersburg at 7.00am and left the following day at 5.30pm so we had a bit longer here. We were very lucky with the weather. We spent all morning in the Hermitage which is fantastic you could spend a week there and not see all of it. We spent a lot of time in the Gold Room which is a new part and really beautiful. In the evening I went to the Folklore Show of Song and Dance which was lovely. My friends went to the Bolshoi Ballet which they enjoyed.

Page 5: Autumn Newsletter 2012

The following day we went to St Petersburg Cathedral which is called the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Spilt Blood which was built on the land where the Tsar Alexandra was assassinated in 1881. The other main church is St Isaac Cathedral, one of the largest in the world which is very beautiful. The next day took us to Tallinn in Estonia where we arrived at 8.00am and left at 4.30pm. We went on a bus and had a walk around a park with a tall statue which Ethel climbed up, and then we all went to a pretty church. Another day at sea followed which we spent looking around the shop. On to Gothenburg where we arrived at 11.00am and left at 5.30pm, I enjoyed walking by the river. Two of my friends went for a good walk around the city but I was too tired by this time but enjoyed sitting and watching the crowds. As we left Gothenburg a super group of youngsters all dressed up and in a band played to us. We had lovely meals on the ship and our waiters were very good, one was called Wam Cales and the second one Glen, they took good care of us and Wam Cales would tell us every evening what he thought our best choice was. Glen became father to a new baby on 18th June so was very excited and it was good to share in his joy. We arrived back on 20th June after a super holiday and watched our coach pull up beside the ship. We stopped at a good restaurant on the way back so we did not have to cook when we arrived back in our “nest”. All went very well and we should express our thanks to Roger and Yvonne who organised a splendid holiday. Shirley Price.

Blue Badge Applications

I recently needed to renew the Blue Badge for my car. I

phoned Bucks County Council for information regarding

applying for this. I was told this is now dealt by Wycombe

County Council. I went on line to do my application to be

told this could take 6 weeks. The 6 weeks starts from the

day they receive the paperwork you need to send. The cost

of a new badge is shown as £10.00. I was told correctly it

was only £2.00, the rest is subsidised by Bucks County

Council. It took 8 weeks for my badge to arrive.

So my advice would be to allow plenty of time if you need

to renew your badge. A new application will take longer

than a renewal. D.W.

Welfare Report Get well wishes to Helen Robinson who has been in hospital recently. Hope you are soon feeling better.

This month’s recipe is a new favourite with the

family, and I don’t even like sausages.

Sausages in cider

8 Herby Sausages

1 Tablespoon Oil

1 Onion, sliced

75g (3oz) Bacon pieces

125g (4oz) Button mushrooms

1 Tablespoon plain flour

300ml (1/2 pt) Dry Cider

Mashed potato and green beans to serve

1. Fry the sausages in 1 teaspoon of the oil until

browned, then transfer to a plate. Add the remaining

oil to the pan and cook the onion for 3 minutes. Add

the bacon and mushrooms cook for 2 minutes. Stir in

the flour.

2. Blend in the cider, then return the sausages to the

pan and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for

30 minutes. Serve with mashed potato and green

beans.

The recipe serves 4 people but I have just upped the

amount of sausages and find the rest enough to serve 5

people. Di Everest.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

Yes I know it seems too early to think about it yet,

BUT

Following an idea that worked very well in recent years, we

thought we would try it again this year:-

Instead of sending individual Christmas Cards to friends at

the club, members can if they wish, give a donation of their

choice, in lieu of sending cards.

The donations will go to the club.

The names of people, who donated will go into the winter

newsletter.

If you would like to take part please give your anonymous

donation to Diane White or Lin Smith by November 15th.

Any person who has not paid their money by this date will not

appear in the winter newsletter. D.W.

OLYMPIC TORCH On Monday 9th July the Olympic torch came to

Aylesbury. Ricardo and I were in Buckingham

Street. Just before the torch came passed,

Ricardo wanted me to take pictures of police cars,

police bike, and helicopter. When the parade

went passed, I asked the torch holder if I could

take a picture of him and my son and he said ok, as

you can see a great picture. John & Ricardo

Sponsored Swim

Well done to all swimmers who took part in the sponsored swim in July. Approximately 15

members took part and they all worked very hard to achieve their swim and get sponsors to help the

club. We do not know how much money was raised yet

or how far our swimmers achieved, we hope to add up all the lengths achieved and see how many miles were completed. Hopefully more details in

the next news letter. Also a big thank you to all the helpers who encouraged and supported the

swimmers. D.W.

Old Time Music Hall

The August social was an Old Time Music Hall

sing along. It was a lively evening with many of

us “singing” along with the songs. The

entertainment was provided by members of the

Church of the Holy Spirit. We also enjoyed 2

solos from Kate King as we all tried to join in

with the actions to these songs. Well done to

everyone who helped organise this evening. D.W.

Save the Date for Cue Sports

We are always looking for different activities that our members can take part in so we are pleased to announce the following:

On Wednesday 26th September the Stadium snooker hall situated in Hut 2 will be made available for our use between 7pm and 9pm. If you play snooker or pool or would like to have a go, and you don’t mind not swimming that evening, join us at the hut for some cue sport.
