December 2016 Thank you for joining us for the fourth annual AKC Obedience Classic and the sixth annual AKC Juniors Classic! We congratulate you and are pleased to welcome you and your dogs to these events. These events are being held in conjunction with the Agility Invitational and the AKC National Championship. Please take the time to visit and appreciate the outstanding dogs and owners participating in each of these events. Dog-and-handler teams have qualified over a yearlong period to be eligible to enter the AKC Obedience Classic in one of the four classes offered (Novice, Open, Utility, and Masters) which progress in difficulty. In the Novice, Open and Utility Classes the handler/dog teams will compete three times. In the Masters Class the handler/dog teams will compete a total of six times (three times in Open and three times in Utility). These obedient dogs will perform a series of exercises, such as heeling, scent discrimination and retrieving over jumps. They are judged on their skill and accuracy, as well as the natural movement of the handler and willingness and enjoyment of the dog. Ten obedience judges were selected for their experience and sound judgment and we want to thank them for the time they have committed to these events and their dedication to the sports. Two hundred and twenty five teams, with 62 breeds from 38 states will compete multiple times over the next two days; their scores will be cumulative so they can be ranked for top honors until an ultimate winner in each class is crowned. An awards ceremony for the Obedience Classic will be held at the conclusion of the event on Sunday. If a “Top Dog” Medallion has been sponsored by a breed’s AKC Parent Club, it will be presented to the dog of that breed with the single highest score from any one ring at the conclusion of the event. In the AKC Juniors Classic, 24 junior handlers from 12 states and Canada will compete twice in obedience on Saturday with 34 dogs in one of three class levels; the Beginner Novice, Preferred Novice and Preferred Open classes. Also for the 3rd year we have AKC Rally® as part

of the Juniors Classic, where we have 27 junior handlers and 38 dogs entered. The Juniors range in age from nine to 18 years and are competing with 20 different breeds. There will be an awards ceremony on Saturday for the Junior Obedience Classic and on Sunday for the Junior Rally Classic, so stop by to cheer for the sport’s next generation of exhibitors! Special appreciation goes to our event sponsors Eukanuba and J & J Dog Supplies, for their continued support of our events. Please take a moment to visit their booths in the conformation and agility areas and express your gratitude to their representatives for supporting our sports. AKC OBEDIENCE CLASSIC JUDGE

Janice Anthes

It all started 40 years ago when Janice's husband said if you want a dog you need to take it to school. So she and a Sheltie puppy named Misty trotted off to school and discovered the fun of training. Since then Janice has trained seven dogs to the UD title, including three Shetland Sheepdogs and four Flat-Coated Retrievers and a Golden Retriever

to a CD who retired early for health reasons. In 1990 during a lapse in having a dog to show, Janice discovered the joy of obedience judging and has been judging ever since. Currently, Janice teaches obedience and agility classes for her local dog training club, Sandia Dog Obedience Club and judges all levels of AKC Obedience and Rally. She is currently training and showing a Flat-coated Retriever, Tempe (GCH Victory's High Wind Warning CDX RE NAJ OA OF THDN) and a Sheltie, Rowdy (Pineland's Runs on the Wildside UD HIT RE OA OAJ NF THDN ) in Conformation, Obedience, Rally and Agility.

Until she retired in 2010, Janice's other life involved working in the high performance computing arena where her last job was to lead the deployment of one of the largest super computers in the world at the University of Texas at Austin. Janice has a MS degree in Computer Science from UNM and worked in the computer field for 21 years for Control Data Systems and later Sun Microsystems. Janice is now enjoying retirement and the additional training and judging time it affords. With more time on her hands she discovered new fulfillment in doing Therapy dog work with Tempe and Rowdy at the local Children's Psychiatric Hospital and the Albuquerque Sunport. Janice currently resides in Cedar Crest, New Mexico which is in the beautiful mountains just east of Albuquerque.

Brian D. Cleveland Bloomington, Minnesota

Brian started in the sport of dog obedience in 1982. Doberman Pinschers were his introduction to the fancy followed by various breeds from different groups.

In 1995, he found himself on the other side of the clipboard and he has enjoyed the many

experiences and opportunities that judging provides.

Having judged and competed at these national events himself, Brian is privileged to be asked to participate again here in Orlando at the 2016 AKC Obedience Classic.

Today, Brian is enjoying retirement and the 3 F's of life...

Kathleen Cook Williamsburg, Ohio

Kathleen and her husband Mike acquired their first AKC registered dogs in 1976 and, together, they started MIKA German Shepherds. As a result of having large breed

dogs (German Shepherds and a Doberman Pinscher) Kathleen began reading books on how to obedience train her dogs. “Formal” training at a local training club ensued and both she and Mike began showing in obedience in 1984. Kathleen’s training interests have expanded over the years to include Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Rally, and Schutzhund. She is proud to say that her German Shepherds have earned advanced titles in multiple venues. She actively trains her current GSD in all. Kathleen is a member of several local training clubs, including Queen City Dog Training Club, The German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater Cincinnati, and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America. She owns a successful dog training school as well. Kathleen judged her first fun match in 1989 and she continues judging matches and 4-H shows today. When AKC decided to add rally as an approved titling venue, she was excited and applied to be an AKC Rally and Obedience Judge. Now she happily judges all levels of obedience and rally and enjoys traveling and meeting other people with the same passion for dogs and training as she has.

Rick Cox Estero, Florida

As a child, Rick wanted a dog of his own, but his parents didn’t think that a pet was necessary for the family. He satisfied his love for dogs by befriending all of his friends’ dogs. His first dog was his wife’s family dog which came along with the marriage.

A couple of years later Rick and his wife purchased a Labrador puppy from a friend. The dog was quite a handful as they soon learned. In frustration Rick and his wife turned to a friend that they knew was obedience training her dogs. She suggested that they take obedience classes at her club and try to get control of their Labrador. Rick’s wife contacted the club and quickly became hooked on obedience. In the late 1980s Rick’s wife presented him with a beautiful, well-bred Yellow Labrador Retriever puppy and suggested to him that he should train the new dog. Rick became active in their local club and it didn’t take long before he got hooked on obedience training. Rick has been training, teaching and showing dogs since that time, owning Labradors, Shelties and currently a Golden Retriever. Being active in the sport, Rick decided that becoming an AKC Obedience judge would be a great opportunity. He knew that it was a lengthy process to become a fully approved Obedience judge but thought that it would be a great way to stay active in the sport. The plan worked out well as he became a fully approved Obedience and Rally judge a few years before his retirement. Rick enjoys meeting new people and their canine companions whether showing a dog or judging an Obedience or Rally Trial. Titling dogs in obedience, rally and agility, Rick is currently showing a Golden Retriever. He and his wife reside in northern Illinois in the summer and southwest Florida in the winter.

AKC JUNIORS OBEDIENCE CLASSIC JUDGE

Donna Eddins Bartlett, Tennessee

At the age of 12 I started exhibiting dogs in obedience trials. I have shown Dachshunds, Poodles, German Shepherds, Pomeranians, Shetland Sheepdogs and Border Collies. I am a second generation dog trainer. My mother opened an obedience school when I was 8 years old and when she retired in 2004 it left me working alone. In 2008 I started judging obedience trials. I'm currently showing my champion miniature

Poodle that I bred. I'm hoping that he will be my first dual champion. My favorite class to judge is Beginner Novice A. It's a great feeling to work with people just beginning in our awesome sport. Good luck to all the juniors competing at the AKC Juniors Classic.

AKC OBEDIENCE CLASSIC & AKC JUNIORS RALLY JUDGE

Deborah Neufeld Kissimmee, Florida

Deborah Neufeld has been involved with Obedience competition since 1981. A club demo of the obedience routines captured her fascination, and she has been an avid supporter of the sport ever since. Deborah has been involved with Rally since mid-2000 and was honored to be invited to represent the sport of Rally on both the first and second AKC Rally Advisory Committees. She has been an

AKC Obedience Judge since 2004 & a Rally Judge since its inception. Deb also wrote a regular column for Front and Finish for many years. A Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Toy Fox Terrier grace her home, nurtured by her loving and supportive husband of 32 years, Chip. Judging the AKC Classic is a dream come true. I hope it will be as wonderful an experience for each exhibitor as it will be for me. Good luck to everyone, and good training!

Jean Nocilly Cheswold, Delaware

After 20 years of riding and showing Quarter Horses, Jean acquired her first show dog, a Bouvier named Amos. Her Novice A dog took her on a wonderful journey into the world of dog

competition. The very first thing she did was sign him up for obedience class. Her first obedience trial was the Bouvier Nationals in 1995. Since then she have competed with six other Bouviers in AKC events, but her priority has always been obedience. All of Jean’s dogs have been conformation champions and have earned at least a CDX obedience title. Four have earned UD’s and two have earned UDX’s. She was privileged to compete at the 2006 National Obedience Championship in Long Beach, California with one of her dogs. When Rally was introduced by AKC, she also started training and showing her dogs in rally, earning RAE’s on three of her dogs. Jean currently has three dogs in various stages of obedience training. One just recently earned her UD and will be competing in Open B and Utility B. One is getting ready for his CD and one has just started in puppy classes. In 2009 she realized a goal of hers by becoming an AKC obedience and rally judge. She has enjoyed her judging experiences in different parts of the country, especially her trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma to judge the very first Rally National Competition in 2013. Jean is looking forward to being able to judge the best dogs in the country at this year’s Obedience Classic in Orlando.

Linda Scanlon Eagle, Colorado

Linda’s introduction to obedience began when an Australian Terrier she had bred lost some teeth and she could no longer special him. A friend was taking her Dalmatian to local obedience classes and suggested Linda investigate them as something else to do with her Aussie, especially since she was having difficulty getting him to return to her after successfully completing “go to ground” challenges. Linda says, “Oh how he would have loved Barn Hunts!” Soon Linda was “hooked,” and her Terrier earned some obedience titles to go with his others and she was invited to assist with classes.

Linda moved to their first house and she could finally get the larger breed that she had been wanting for some time - a Saluki. She was told by the co-head trainers at the obedience club that she could not possibly be serious about the sport or else she would have opted for an “obedience breed.” Linda was also informed that since there had never been a saluki to earn a UD (there had only been about seven CDX’s at that time), it was obviously impossible. Linda decided to prove them wrong and as a result, had the first UD titled Saluki in AKC history (1976) followed several years later by the second UD Saluki, who was also a group winning champion and Best in Field winning Lure Coursing Champion. To date, she believes they are the only ones to earn Canadian UD’s and Chuck Bush gets the credit for helping her train those salukis. Dog World magazine offered “accomplishment” awards years ago and Linda’s salukis earned a good many of them, as well as some large all breed High in Trials. A local sighthound club had a prominent annual all breed match that included obedience but could not find anyone to judge sub-novice so they asked Linda if she could do it. It was her first judging experience and even with an entry of over 50, she loved every minute of it; so a desire to judge obedience was ‘whelped’ on that wonderful day. After obtaining AKC approval her first assignment was in September 1979. Linda has been fortunate to judge in nearly every state and Canada too. Conformation and field assignments have taken her to some wonderful shows in the world; England, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, New Zealand and Australia and she is looking forward to judging obedience and rally in New Zealand one day as well. Linda says it is a great honor to have been invited to judge the AKC Obedience Classic and she wishes every competitor great enjoyment and the best of luck at this very special competition.

Barbara Wedekind Selton Bloomington, Minnesota

Barb was hooked on obedience 36 years ago when she put her dog into the ring

at a Fun Match and got a Blue Ribbon and has loved it ever since. Many years later, as Barb was making plans to sponsor the AKC Obedience Judges Seminar for her local club, she mentioned to a friend, “You know…someday when I retire-I would like to become a Judge”….she looked at Barb and said, “What are you waiting for?” And thus Barb started her AKC Obedience and Rally Judging career. The day Barb judged her first trial, all she could say over and over to everyone when they asked about her Judging Assignment was “Wow that was so much fun!” Barb could not wait to do it again. She loved it from day one, and still does. Judging has also taken her all over the USA from Hawaii to Alaska, Washington to New York, Minnesota to Texas and everywhere in between. All such wonderful places and with each place she has met great people, wonderful dogs and new challenges. Handlers often tell her “You make it such a wonderful experience in the ring,” and she responds… ”Because I Love Judging” and they say it shows. Barb is very passionate for the sport and loves giving back to the obedience community, who has given her so much for the past 36+ years. Barb is married to her wonderful husband Phillip; they have one son, and four grandchildren. For her full-time job, she is the Administrator for Urology Associates, Ltd., a private practice located in the Twin Cities area with 16 physicians and 21 clinics, where she has been for the past 29 years. She currently has two beautiful Golden Retrievers: Brandy age 9 and Bella age 6. Barb is thrilled for the honor to Judge the 2016 AKC Classic and wish all of the exhibitor teams the best of luck!

AKC JUNIORS OBEDIENCE CLASSIC JUDGE

Robert R. Withers Lakeland, Florida

In my early years in obedience I was a spectator while my wife was training our Shih Tzu. I attended every class, assisted with carrying the required training materials, and enjoyed watching how well the dog was doing. After a couple of years a family decision was made that perhaps investing in a Shetland Sheepdog puppy would broaden our training experiences. That decision led to the first opportunity for me to train and show my first dog, actually a client dog so I never

had the opportunity to show in Novice A. After placing a CDX on that first dog it was time for me to get my own puppy that was my first Utility dog. I have also competed in Agility and Conformation.

I have always enjoyed teaching as much as training so I began as an associate instructor at one of the local training centers. That led to a requirement to create and teach a Rally “O” class. When AKC announced the plans to make Rally a titling class I made the decision to become a Rally judge and then applied for and completed the requirements to judge Obedience at all levels.

I have always enjoyed working with the local 4-H clubs providing coaching opportunities to the members, as time would permit. I have also provided judging services to the local 4-H events and have judged several years at the Florida State Fair Obedience and Rally competitions.

I was a member of the 2010 AKC Rally Advisory Committee and on the Judging panel for the 2014 Rally National Championship held in Harrisburg, PA. I am grateful to have been selected to be one of the judges for the 2016 Juniors Classic and I am looking forward to observing the performances of all of the competitors.

AKC OBEDIENCE CLASSIC AWARDS

Awards are based on cumulative scores except for the Parent Club Medallion Awards.

AKC Parent Club “Top Dog” Medallion by Breed. If an AKC Parent Club has chosen to sponsor this award it will be presented to the dog of that breed with the single highest score from any one ring at the conclusion of the event. An awards medallion with a neck ribbon will be presented during the awards ceremony.

FCI International Dogs are not eligible for the AKC Parent Club Medallions, unless they compete in AKC events during the qualifying period and met the dog eligibility requirements.

Highest Scoring FCI International Dogs* – the following awards will be based on cumulative scores at the conclusion of the event in each class Novice, Open, Utility, and Masters.

1st Place (from each class) $100 Award** ~ Rosette

*Only dogs from FCI Invited Countries are eligible for High Scoring FCI International Dog awards.

AKC Code of Sportsmanship PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. • Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. • Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. • Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. • The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors. • The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. • The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. • The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. • The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. • Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. • Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. • Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. • Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. • Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. • Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. • Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport.
