Halt! Don’t Miss the Nation’s Top Canine Competition

We are pleased to welcome you to Long Beach and the 14th annual AKC National Obedience Invitational. Over the next two days, you’ll witness the result of years of hard work as the top obedience competitors in the nation vie for the prestigious title of National Obedience Champion (NOC). Hundreds of dog and handler teams have competed throughout the year in order to qualify for this event, but only the best of the best will be in attendance.

Over the first day of competition, 100 dog-and-handler teams representing 42 breeds, 30 states and Canada will perform a complex program of exercises such as heeling, scent discrimination and retrieval over jumps. The teams will be judged on their skill and accuracy as well as the natural movement of the handler and willingness and enjoyment of the dog. The head-to-head competition begins on Sunday, where the finalists from the previous day will attempt to figure-eight, jump and retrieve their way to the National Obedience Championship title.

Inspired by the dogs you see in the ring? This competition represents the pinnacle of teamwork between dog and handler, but any dog and owner can become involved in obedience training. While your dog may never heel or stay to quite this degree of precision, obedience training benefits the entire family and increases the enjoyment, companionship and satisfaction you get out of your relationship with your dog. The competing dogs may be able to perform lightning-fast recalls and respond to their owner’s slightest hand signal, but they are also well-loved family pets. Each dog starts his obedience career by earning the Companion Dog (CD) title, which is the first of three titles. All levels of obedience require the dog and handler to earn qualifying scores at three AKC licensed trials under three different judges. The dogs must retain at least 170 points out of a possible perfect 200 to earn a qualifying score. The exercises are divided into three classes: Novice, Open, and utility.

In the Novice class the dog must be able to perform a few basic obedience exercises like heel, come, sit and down. The next class is Open. In this class dogs must perform jumping and retrieving tasks in addition to the basic obedience skills required in the Novice class. Once a dog completes the requirements for this class, it is awarded the Companion Dog Excellent (CDx) title. The final class is utility. This level of obedience contains the most difficult exercises such as directed jumping and retrieving, and identifying objects that have the handler’s scent on them among a group of similar objects that do not. Once a dog has completed the requirements for this class, it is awarded the

utility Dog (uD) title. A complete list of the exercises and requirements for each class can be found in the AKC Obedience Regulations.

Once a dog earns the utility Dog title, the handler may choose to continue to compete for an Obedience Trial Championship (OTCH). In order to do so the dog must compete in both the Open and utility classes to accumulate championship points based on the number of dogs defeated and the number of dogs in competition.

unlike conformation, a dog must earn 100 points to obtain an Obedience Trial Championship. This is how the AKC invites the top obedience dogs in the country to the AKC National Obedience Invitational. An OTCH title is not necessary to be eligible, but to be invited to participate each dog must be ranked within the top 10% of its breed during the qualifying period of July 1st, 2007 through June 30th, 2008. If there are less than 30 dogs within a breed that are eligible to be invited, the top 3 dogs based on OTCH points will be invited. This ranking will include the top 25 dogs ranked nationwide among all breeds respectively.

There will be only one dog and handler team awarded the title of National Obedience Champion (NOC). Stop by the obedience rings to find out the winner of this prestigious designation.

Classes and titles for AKC Obedience(What it all means!)

Companion Dog (CD): First title awarded to a dog that has been certified by three different judges to have received qualifying scores in the Novice classes at three different AKC trials.

Companion Dog Excellent (CDX): Second title awarded to a dog that has been certified by three different judges to have received qualifying scores in the Open classes at three different AKC trials.

Utility Dog (UD): Third title awarded to a dog that has been certified by three different judges to have received qualifying scores in the Utility classes at three different AKC trials.

Utility Dog Excellent (UDX): A separate designation for a dog that has earned a UD title. Dogs must earn qualifying scores from the Open and Utility classes at 10 separate AKC trials.

Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH): Dogs that have earned UD titles must accumulate 100 points base on the number of dogs defeated in the Open and Utility classes, earn a 1st place in the Open class, a 1st place in the Utility class and an additional 1st place in either. These 1st places must be won under three different judges.

National Obedience Champion (NOC): The official AKC designation of the winner of the AKC National Obedience Invitational. This title is awarded annually to only one dog. The letters NOC are placed in front of the dog’s AKC registered name and it becomes a permanent part of the dog’s official AKC awards record.

RALLY AKC Rally is the new

dog sport that is taking the nation by storm! A successful stepping stone from the AKC Canine Good Citizen® program to the world of obedience or agility, rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. Rally was designed with the pet owner in mind, but it can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition. A rally course includes 10 to 20 stations, depending on the level, and

Crowding: A dog so close to the handler as to interfere with the handler’s freedom of motion.

Forging: A dog that does not maintain the proper heel position and moves ahead of the handler.

Heel: Dog should walk briskly and naturally at the handler’s left side without interfering with the handler’s forward motion.

Lagging: A dog that does not maintain the proper heel position and falls behind the handler.

Minor Penalty: A 1/2 point to 2 1/2 point deduction from the dog and handler’s score.

Order: Direction from the judge to the handler, either verbal or non-verbal.

Signal: non-verbal direction from the handler to the dog.

Substantial Penalty: A deduction from the dog and handler’s score of three or more points.

The main objective of rally is to produce dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs, in a manner that will reflect positively on the sport of rally at all times and under all conditions.

“Dream”Dream is a four year old Golden

Retriever that is owner/breeder handled and trained by the Andersons. Dream came from a litter of eight puppies and tried to be top puppy but was always on the bottom of the pile. If Dream could talk as a puppy, she would have said to her littermates, “you are not suppose to be doing that. you are going to get in trouble,” and they would reply, “Come on, no one is watching.” Hearing that, Dream would join in on the fun.

Dream is spoiled and because of that, it seems she always gets to have it her way around the house. We have a saying around our house: “Who’s in charge? Dreamie Pie Pie.”

Dream is a comedian, but she always wants to please you. Her demeanor is so easy to read, you know when she

is confused, serious, mad, and happy. She is always up for an adventure, especially going to dog shows, and she loves it when someone wants to pet her and tell her she is good. Dream is a great ambassador for obedience; she loves to show off her happy feet heeling and make everyone laugh.

Dream is also a therapy dog and visits a local rest home often. She is now their mascot. We have a hard time leaving because Dream enjoys all the love and affection she receives there. She also knows when someone is ill and will be very calm around them. Dream is a good teacher of life and gets to the hearts of many. She helps people believe that Dreams Do Come True!

JudgesMIKE BAVILACQuA

Mike Bavilacqua was introduced to the sport of obedience in 1960 when he observed his wife, Shirley, training their first Standard Poodle. It looked like a lot of fun, so the couple got another Standard Poodle and Mike signed up for obedience classes. Together, they have earned many obedience titles on Standard Poodles, Boxers, and one Boston Terrier.

Some of their proudest achievements include putting an OTCH on a Standard Poodle and a championship title and uDx title on the Boston Terrier.

Approved for all levels of obedience, Mike has been judging since 1972. When he retired in 1967, Mike took up the game of golf but still enjoys judging obedience in all parts of the country and meeting many nice people and their wonderful dogs along the way.

PHYLLIS BRODERICKPhyllis Broderick purchased her first Beagle in

1975. Little did she know that this little puppy would introduce her to the wonderful world of obedience, earning his utility title in 1983.

She has trained and shown Beagles and English Springer Spaniels to various titles including agility titles, rally titles, championships, and an Obedience Trial Championship.

Phyllis has also earned championships and obedience titles in Canada and Bermuda. Phyllis is currently active in two obedience clubs and three English Springer Spaniel clubs and serves on the Board of Governors for the Springer National Club. She has been exhibiting in obedience since 1978 and judging since 1991.

The sport of obedience has brought her much pleasure over the years.

JudgesBRIAN CLEVELAND

Brian Cleveland has been around the sport of dogs since acquiring his first AKC registered dog in 1982. Kendra, an oversized black and tan Doberman Pinscher, introduced Brian to the sport of competitive obedience. Over the next few years and many miles of traveling with her and Brian’s young daughter, Melissa, the team acquired an Obedience Trial Championship and a win at the DPCA Obedience Top 20 competition.

Brian’s next Doberman, Megan, went on to exceed all expectations. Megan gathered many high in trials, including a national breed club win, before a cruciate injury ended her career. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and a rescue Miniature Pinscher named Digit have all been a part of Brian’s journey.

Brian also enjoys competing in and judging at conformation shows and field trials. He would like to thank everyone involved in organizing this event and considers it an honor and a privilege to be asked to participate in this capacity. He wishes the best of luck to the competitors.

ANNA LORENZAnna Lorenz has been involved in the sport of obedience for

20 years, having earned the first of 15 obedience titles in 1991 on a Lhasa Apso. The successive obedience titles were earned on a slightly larger breed, the Newfoundland. Anna has put the sixth uDx in the history of the Newf breed, as well as earning HIT awards and regularly placing dogs in the top ten obedience Newfs. Anna is active as an exhibitor in conformation and obedience, and has earned many Championships as well as Best in Show on her Newfs.

Anna passed her Novice judging test three days before September 11, 2001. Because of the ensuing emergency flight cancellations, and with some trepidation, she stepped in to judge her first trial the very next weekend. Since that first judging experience, there has never been an assignment she did not thoroughly enjoy. “While applying the regulations equally to all exhibitors, I hope to have each team who shows to me leave my ring having enjoyed their run and wanting to return to the ring again. I recognize all the time and effort people have put into

training their dogs, and I am fortunate to see the unique relationship each team brings to the ring. One of the highlights is the thrill of seeing an experienced, well-working team win a trial, as well as that of seeing the excitement of a novice team having their first success.”

Anna would like to thank the AKC for the honor of being chosen to judge at this prestigious event. She wishes all the teams the satisfaction of bringing their best performance to the ring and looks forward to an exciting, enjoyable competition.

JudgesPATRICIA (PAT) SCuLLY

Patricia (Pat) Scully has been involved in the sport of purebred dogs for many years. In forty five years of showing, she has finished Pugs in both obedience and conformation in the united States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. Pat has judged all levels of obedience for almost 40 years, and was honored to serve on the 1999, 2003, and 2007 AKC Obedience Advisory Committees. Additionally, Pat was a member of the initial AKC Rally Advisory Committee in 2006.

Patricia has been a Delegate for the Obedience Training Club of Hawaii, Inc. since 1985, and was Chairman of the AKC Delegates Obedience, Tracking, and Agility Committee, and a member of the AKC Delegates Coordinating Committee. Other positions include: Director, President, former Treasurer, and Obedience Chairman of the Tuxedo Park Kennel Club, Inc.; former Director, President, National Show Chairman, Obedience

Chairman, and Honorary Lifetime Member of the Pug Dog Club of America, Inc.; former member of the Board of Directors, President, and Executive Secretary of the Association of Obedience Clubs and Judges, Inc.; former Director, Obedience Chairman, and Honorary Lifetime Member of the Ramapo Kennel Club, Inc. Awards include the Gaines Medal for Good Sportsmanship (a three time recipient), and the Richard H. D’Ambrisi Award. Pat is currently serving her third four-year term on the AKC Board of Directors.

MARgERY WESTMargery West took her first dog, an American Eskimo,

through obedience class in 1973. Having been “bitten” by the “dog bug,” she then got her first Sheltie. After putting several obedience titles and two breed championships on them, she branched out into other breeds including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, a Curly-Coated Retriever, a Belgian Sheepdog, a Schipperke, a Whippet, an Australian Shepherd, Border Collies, and a Greyhound. She currently owns a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Sheltie. Margery has titled dogs to all levels in obedience as well as several retriever hunting test titles, rally titles, and one TD. She became an AKC approved judge in 1991 and is now approved to judge all levels of AKC Obedience and Rally.

In 1990, Margery wrote the first edition of the Dog Writers Association of America’s award-winning book Social Graces. Additionally, she has served as a columnist for Front & Finish and Forward, a quarterly magazine. Margery is a past president of the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors and is currently the training director for the Springfield, Missouri Dog Training Club.
