This seminar is open to all obedience enthusiasts who would like to experience a unique and entertaining study of the sport of Obedience. Enlightened BurglarOne evening a burglar broke into a home and was rooting through the owners’ belonging when he heard a voice in the dark declare “Jesus is watching!”  The burglar whipped around with his flashlight and as the beam fell upon a parrott sitting on his perch the burglar exclaimed “Who said that?”  The parrott pronounced, “I, Moses, said that!”  The burglar was amused and asked “What kind of people would name a parrot Moses?”  The parrott said “The same kind of people who would name a 150 pound Rottweiler Jesus.”

Let’s Talk Obedience On August 1st and 2nd Rich & Pat Strong will be reviving a Let’s Talk Obedience seminar.  The event will be held at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds (1300 E 100 South) in Lebanon, IN 46052.  Among several topics that will be discussed is an in-depth look at key AKC obedience regulations.  As revisions to these rules have recently been released, the disucssion will likely be rousing, and worth the trip alone.  The seminar is open to all obedience enthusiasts.  The foundation and novice classes will be covered the first day and the advanced open and utility classes will be covered the second.  Personally I am most curious about a discussion which will focus on the future of our sport.  I strongly (no pun intended) recommend that all obedience afficinados attend this event.  Look elsewhere in this issue for more informationa and a registration form.  You can also email Rich at mailto:strongra2@comcast.net if you have questions.

PROOFING : AN OVERVIEW

Whenever I see that my dog has grasped any given skill or exercise, I know that it is all right to begin some light proofing of that skill.

So what is proofing? Let me first tell you what it is NOT:

It is not a test. Any 'test' of my dog's understanding will come in a trial!

It is not a way of 'tricking' my dog just to see how smart he is. “TRICKS ARE FOR KIDS!”

It is NOT to see if my dog really 'knows' the exercise. As stated in my introduction, I would only proof something my dog already knows! To proof something he did not know would be utterly unfair and could cause enormous set-backs.

It is NOT to see how much pressure my dog can take. I want to make my dog stronger, not undermine his confidence! (This would be the exact opposite of my intent.)

What I use proofing for is to strengthen my dog's understanding of the skill/exercise, and to build his stability by strengthening his confidence.

The last thing I wish to do when proofing is to shatter my dog's belief in me or himself!!!

So, again, what is proofing?

Proofing is the introduction of different distractions and challenges that ultimately—through gradations—strengthen a dog's knowledge of how to perform any given skill or exercise and in so doing, gain great confidence and trust in both himself and his team leader.

When introducing my dog to any proofing, I do not toss him into the throws of anarchy or overkill. I have three different levels of proofing and I only move forward once my dog is secure in the first level before moving him onto a higher level.

The three levels are:

1.Light proofing: this would be mild distraction work mixed with some temperate challenges.

1.Moderate proofing: at this level external distractions are increased and the challenges are 'moderately' more difficult.

1.“Super Dog” proofing: distractions are intense and the challenges more complicated. At this level my dog will need to 'work' things out and think on his feet.

Allow me to provide one example for each level:

Light proofing might be simply kicking out a toy while asking my dog for stationary side attention. (I ask my dog to succeed while stationary before ever asking him to succeed while moving!)

I have seen some trainers take proofing to the absurd by having their dog do articles next to a pile of feces or the like. Why? This is, in my opinion, wicked and stupid and utterly unnecessary. This would never happen in a trial situation, and if it ever did, I would simply pull my dog. I would NOT subject my dog to the inane or ridiculous. Taking proofing to the absurd only demonstrates the trainer's character. Enough said.

When proofing you are not “proving” anything. Proofing is to IMPROVE your dog's understanding of his obedience skills and build his confidence in himself and in you. With understanding and confidence, a dog will be more flexible in different environments and be able to adjust to varying conditions with ease. He will be able to think on his four feet. He will be secure in his knowledge of what his job is as your teammate. In other words, your dog will be 'ready'.

But even more, your dog will be 'ready, able, and willing!”

I have said many times that perhaps the most important, yet misunderstood and underutilized aspect of training is randomization. Studies have shown that humans have a difficult time not falling into patterned behaviors, making randomization a huge challenge. It’s going to remain a challenge, too, because in training you are not only playing a numbers game; you’re also judging the appropriateness of your choices given the skills and responses of the dog in front of you.

Yes, for many, randomization is seen as a numbers game. It begins as a ratio of reward to behavior. Virtually all training begins with 1:1, one behavior given 1 reward. Mentally it seems clear enough that the goal would be to increase the number of repetitions required before a reward is given. The common mistake is to follow that logic with a constant increase of the repetitions needed, rather than a truly random application that sometimes does extend effort requirements, but as often also rewards smaller units. To illustrate, let’s just look at sit, and assume for this discussion that the dog does know sit well and is past needing actual lures. The numbers shown in each progression are the numbers of sit repetitions the trainer wants the dog to do to earn a reward.

Now it’s all fine to generate a planned schedule like that; but what if you get to that 8th sit in the middle, and it sucks? You don’t want to reward a behavior that doesn’t meet your criteria just because of the number in your plan. What if you get to the 6th sit in that first 10 rep increment, and it’s the best one your dog has ever done? It’s an improvement , so yes, it should be rewarded! And if you see the same magnificence again on the next rep, you might want to reward that too, which totally puts your plan aside, but achieves an improvement in your training.

Another aspect of randomization that gets more focus than I think it warrants is randomizing reward types. Frankly, I consider this to be the least important factor for our training efforts. It tends to be thought of as either food or toys, or maybe a game of some sort, or (for those who believe they are really thinking outside the box) access to do some other activity that the dog enjoys, based on the Premack Principle. I feel that there is too much focus on the rewards and the trainer’s desire to use certain rewards for reasons that have nothing to do with the particular dog. And it’s a touchy subject.

Some trainers, having fallen into the trap of having food be part of the cue set with prior dogs and ending up with no cookie / no worky issues, will work very hard to focus on the use of toys with the next dog. That’s fine…or it’s not. The next dog may not be that interested in toys, or may be SO interested in owning the toys that the training becomes a confrontation zone. Playing with toys can be a great aspect of your relationship with your dog, and there are days that I go outside for half an hour with the dogs and the only thing we do is play with toys, just because it’s fun and makes us all happy. But the reality is that regardless of the dog’s preference for food or toys, NEITHER of them is going into the ring with you and the dog. So what should the focus be on?

Personally, I think the focus should be on the tools that do go in the ring with you. Let’s start with praise. It should always be your first line of communication in training. The food or toys that your dog prefers is used in training to build associated value with the praise in early stages, but they MUST NOT BE USED INSTEAD OF PRAISE. Ironically, some dogs have to be taught to stick with you and accept praise, which is why some folks learn to short circuit the praise and rush to present The Gift they know their dogs naturally value. You need to see that as the disrespectful act that it is (even if you enabled the dog to learn it because you didn’t know better), and stop it from continuing. At the very least, you should be able to end an exercise, tell your dog to stay as he is sitting in heel position, and escalate the verbal praise and add in petting while the dog holds a sit. Correct physically as needed to get that sit, but continue the praise verbally and the touching and scratching. If your dog doesn’t experience

all of that, he doesn’t know it’s worth appreciating. So it’s your job to create the opportunity for him to discover the value.

Now you don’t get to praise every single behavior that happens in the ring because the exercises are sequences of behaviors that only get one cue, and we’re limited to praising after the exercise; so what else needs to be considered at least a sign of success, if not actually a reward? Silence! Silence must imply that you approve of what the dog is doing. In order for this to work, it means that in training, you need to establish a way to tell the dog when a mistake has happened. He should be confident that if you see an error you will let him know (and tell him how to do better!), but that if he doesn’t hear anything from you while he’s working, he is on the right track and can continue with confidence.

Another factor that goes into the ring with you is the dog’s physical comfort. We tend not to see that as a reward in the same way that food or toys are viewed, but the fact is that achieving, increasing and maintaining physical comfort is a very strong intrinsic motivator. It’s the reason that I use collar pressure deliberately for virtually every behavior my dogs learn. My hands and the collar go into the ring with us. In training, if the dog makes an error I can mark it verbally, and then take the collar and remind the dog to try harder to do the broken behavior better. So the potential for correction is always there, but the dog knows from experience that cooperation minimizes or prevents his exposure to the correction conversation. That knowledge lends confidence to the dog that can be much more effective than the hope that food or toys may appear at any moment…or not. Every once in a while in training, even when the dog is doing pretty well, it helps sharpen the dog’s efforts to review the collar pressure conversation on individual elements, especially those that appear in the middle of longer chains, such as the go out touch or the sit. Otherwise, single out behaviors as needed; but be consistent about what you approve of and what you think needs improving. If you are consistent about this in training, correct performances are reinforced by the absence of interruption and correction, and THAT is consistent even in the ring.

In a valid effort to get our dogs ready to work in the ring setting where material rewards will not happen, a pattern that we fall into is rewarding sequences after the fact all of the time. Your intention may be to reward a really good drop on recall, and you do that by finishing the recall and then praising, petting, and perhaps getting a treat out. It’s fine; but if you map it out, the behavior that actually seems to the dog to be the thing that gets rewarded is the finish, maybe the front. What about the drop itself? What about the stop on his name? What about holding the stay and looking right at you? What about hearing you say his name while he sits and NOT moving forward, just perking up his ears and focusing clearly? It’s actually possible to reward every one of those increments in one session without

actually stopping your work, through the use of targets and tossed treats. That idea leads to a principle that I think folks need to embrace a lot more, which is put material reward deliveries INTO the exercises, rather than after them. If you are successful at that, your dog will become eager to get the next exercise going. You also remove strong points of prediction and disappointment. If the dog expects rewards after the finish of every exercise in open and utility, and is mildly disappointed when they don’t happen, the ring becomes an arena of increasing disappointment. But if the dog doesn’t actually see specific beginning and ends to sequences, the disappointment is replaced with continued hope.

If you experiment with that idea, what you also achieve is the randomization of rewarded requirements. It also makes it more interesting for the dog to accept praise and then get immediately ready to work some more because it isn’t the breaks that hold all of the good stuff; it’s the work. Just as an example, I might do the whole recall, but after the finish I might just praise, and then immediately tell the dog to heel, toss a treat for the dog to chase after the fifth step, call the dog back to heel, and do an about turn that gets a snack, keep going until the dog catches up, and then bring out the dumbbell and do a play retrieve with no stay required (one of Trix’s favorites). For that particular dog, food and chasing things are about equal in value; but her expectations now are that cool stuff is more likely to happen during work than after it. She accepts praise and petting, but keeps her attention on me because she is expecting me to ask her to do something else. The quicker she gets back to working, the more likely she believes rewards are to happen, although she has no idea which behavior might make that occur.

Obviously that randomization type cannot happen until the dog has a fair number of fluent behaviors and pretty excellent command discrimination. But as few as three or four behaviors can open that door for you. And once you get proficient at it, you will find that you can achieve a TON of useful training on all of your skills in a very short time. In less than 10 minutes, I can reinforce the general exercises in both open and utility, with emphasis on straight line heeling, turns, halts, signals, moving stand, fronts, finishes, focused approaches to front, go outs, name response, short go out sits, target commitment, and more. Usually I finish and tell Trix we’re ready to leave the training area, and she stops in the middle and says, “Really? Is that all?” Perfect! We’re stopping while she’s eager and would willingly keep working.

Now certainly for folks who find their heads spinning with the idea of trying to randomize better, numbers come into play. There’s a free app available designed to tell you when to reward and which motivator to choose and how long the reward conversation will be within a given training time frame. It could certainly help you be aware of how long you

do or don’t keep your dog moving and focused between reward intervals, and help those who have fallen into a pattern of diminishing rewards rather than randomized rewards get back on track. However, the app has no way to judge the quality of what is happening when it tells you to reward. So keep quality of responses at the forefront of your mind.

How rewards are delivered is an aspect of randomization, too. One thing that makes a huge difference in the successful use of food or toys in training having good carryover in the ring is this: Whatever your dog’s most favored motivator is must also be used as a proof in training. If your dog is a foodie, he has to learn to leave food to do a recall, or do a recall past food. If your dog loves toys, he needs to be able to see you toss a toy one direction, but do a recall or a finish without diving for the toy. But both hazards can then be used to reward that cooperation by releasing the dog to go to the motivator when he’s done what you asked. (Do be sure to balance those releases with praise and rewards directly from you when the dog has made the right choice.) This is not an easy game to play while you’re teaching the dog the rules, but it’s worth the effort because of the level of concentration it yields and the shift in the dog’s belief about what food means, and how YOU fit into the equation as the gatekeeper to everything worthwhile. It really escalates the dog’s respect for you because you get a chance to demonstrate that yes, you CAN read his mind.

Food is not the task. There are no exercises where “Go eat” is a principle part of an exercise. Food is not a cue. For example, I hold a treat in my right hand and let the dog see it there, and then ask the dog to do a hand target touch to the other hand, do a go out or retrieve a dumbbell, moving past the obvious food to do the task. The dog has to listen, watch for and respond to the actual cue set and move away from the obvious temptation in order to succeed at the task, and likely earn access to the food or toy eventually. If your dog loves toys, you need to be able to wave a toy in your right hand and still be able to get correct visual focus from the dog on his heel target or front target. You should not have to hide the toy. The dog needs to understand that it is not his unless YOU start the game and invite him to get it. He must also give it up without argument, something I’ve written about before. If you don’t set the rules and teach your dog how to cope with them, food and toys are hazardous tools.

This concept should be introduced early in your dog’s career, and it’s easy to do in the context of a simple stay, and then extrapolated into target games that help your foundation training for attention, recalls, directed jumping and marking as for gloves and go outs. As much as we believe we’re in control of what the dog learns, we can’t be in his head. We can’t know for certain how he is reasoning through the labyrinth of information we provide to him. When a problem arises it’s often a guessing game to figure out where things went wrong. The simplest thing can wreak havoc on a training program.

As I’ve mentioned before, National Geographic filmed a special on dogs a few years ago. In it, they discussed how we have engineered dogs to be such wonderful, adaptable partners that there is no comparison with any other animal. Tests were done with chimps and dolphins, and neither of them understood how to take direction from man as easily and naturally as dogs. In one test, two containers were provided (one with food in it), and neither chimps nor dolphins understood that the handler was pointing to the container holding the treat. Dogs, even young puppies, got the idea immediately. In fact, in many cases the handler only needed to look in the direction of the container with the treat in it. In another test a handler was seated next to a black Lab. She put a treat on the floor and told the dog not to take it. The dog complied as long as the handler’s eyes were open. When the handler closed her eyes, the dog took the treat. Our eyes are more than windows to the soul; they are conduits to the dog’s understanding of us.

It is utterly amazing that dogs can sense the minute cues we give, especially when we’re not even aware that we are sending them. Dogs are brilliant at reading us. Subtleties in body movements that are imperceptible to us are like neon signs to them. While watching performances in the ring, it is common to see a dog respond to the handler’s slight shift in balance or unexpected glance. Some handlers have a tendency to “step-in” closer to the dog

on the halt when the dog is wide. This prompts the dog to go even wider on the halt, expecting the handler to move in. Just a slight wobble can be enough to cue the dog to react by moving away from the handler, especially with smaller dogs.

For the Broad Jump, Clinicians tell us to look at the jump or beyond it where we want the dog to land – and that works. My own Cavalier is so adept at reading eye movements that I only need to look slightly left to get him to spin, or look slightly right to get him to circle in place, at the ground for down, and above him to sit from the down. He’s not nearly as confident on commands alone. Glancing at the correct jump on directed jumping can make a difference for a lot of dogs. Sometimes a dog that has trouble with the drop on recall will improve if the handler just looks at the ground in front of the dog, where they want him to drop. Amazing! And it’s not just bigger dogs that pick up on “eye signals”; smaller dogs notice it in a number of contexts as well.

It’s not only the eyes that cue the dog either; they pick up on so much more. A previous dog of mine was prone to anticipation on the recall. What I discovered was that she was cueing on the fact that I naturally take a breath before calling the dog. I would breathe in, and she would come. To fix the problem all I did was accustom her to my taking a breath, shrugging my shoulders, tilting my head, etc. I didn’t want to leave it up to her to pick another idiosyncrasy of mine, so the simple fix was to teach her to ignore everything except the command or signal to come.

As a Judge I am often surprised by how the handler’s actions affect the dog’s performance. For the Drop on Recall I show the handler what my signals will look like when I give them. Still, a percentage of handlers will be so focused on the dog coming to them that they won’t see me give the signal in a timely manner, or sometimes they even miss it completely. I believe that handlers in general tend to watch the dog all the way to them in training and never look away. In the ring the handler’s eyes must at least glance at the Judge to determine when the drop order is signaled. I expect that the break in eye contact could be enough of a difference to affect the dog’s normal responses. This may not be as much of an issue for signals, where the dog is stationary and the handler has time to regain eye contact before signaling the dog. In general, though, differences in training and showing can have much more of an impact than we can afford. Keep the little things in mind when you train, and don’t forget to account for conditions you will find in the ring.

SerpenTEAM is a column featuring special dog and handler teams involved in Rally Obedience.

I was privileged to judge this team at the 2014 Rally National Championship in the RAE RE level class in Harrisburg, PA. Really is an amazing dog, and having owned a Shar-Pei I could “really” appreciate what a special dog he is. The next day Ray and I hung around to watch a little of the obedience competition and I was able to talk to Darin Cox about his dog. Thanks to Darin for providing this information and the photos for me.

Most breed parent clubs have a Versatility program and titles that recognize individual members and their dogs with achievements in multiple sports. The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America has a Versatile Shar-Pei (VSP), Versatile Shar-Pei EXcellent (VSPX) and a Versatile Shar-Pei Championship (VSPCh). The VSP requires titles in two areas such as obedience/rally, agility, conformation, therapy, herding, hunting, flyball, scent work, etc. Some of these areas are not open to the Chinese Shar-Pei in AKC, so the program will consider titles and instinct test certificates from other organizations. The VSPX requires titles in three areas, one of which must be an advanced title. The VSPCh requires a conformation Championship and titles in four other areas with advanced titles in two of them. Only two Chinese Shar-Pei have achieved the CSPCA Versatile Shar-Pei title. The first was the late CH CHVSP ElJay Disneys Steamboat Willy Emby, CD, Can.CD, RA, NA, NAJ, OA, OAJ, W-FD, WFDX/MF, HIC, TDI CGC owned and handled by Marilyn Braunstein. traditional obedience, rally obedience, agility, herding and therapy. Many in the CSPCA were inspired by what they achieved to go train their Shar-Pei to see what they could do. The second Shar-Pei to achieve the title was my very own Really: AKC and UKC Champion, U-CD U-ROC U-RX U-ACHX Elite's I Am for Real at WudaFace BN CD GN CD-CCH CDX-C RAE AX AXJ NF CW-SP VSPCh THDN CGC TDI. At 5 years of age, Really has achieved quite a bit and is more than happy to try any game I throw at him. I bought Really from one of the best Chinese Shar-Pei breeders, Miss Sandy Woodall in Dallas, Texas. From the moment he set paws in my RV on the trip home, his training began. Obviously we trained him and competed with him in conformation, but my intent from the moment I started my search for a new Chinese Shar-Pei puppy was to show what they can do in performance venues when started early. The Chinese Shar-Pei isn't a traditional performance breed in America, but in its native China, they were a utility farm dog. They did some vermin control, some herding and some

hunting of feral pigs. I have long maintained that they should have been put in the working group when admitted to the AKC in 1992. It has been one of my goals since I began with the breed to show that working side of these dogs I love. I met my wife Patricia Snider as instructors at the Obedience Training Class of Harrisburg, and have been training with her since. My Chinese Shar-Pei when we met was a red-fawn brushcoat boy named Mirage: U-CD U-ACH Pai Gei's Mirage of WudaFace CD, CD-H, RA, NA, OAP, AJP, VSPX, CGC, TDI. Like most Chinese Shar-Pei at that time, Mirage began training in performance when he was done in the conformation ring. I often wonder what he could have achieved had I started his performance training as a puppy.

Really's first performance competition was Rally Obedience, and it's still one of his favorite games. He finished his first RAE title at the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America national specialty in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2012. At that same trial, he also earned High in Trial out of the Novice B obedience ring. In 2014, we were honored to compete in the AKC's National Rally Championships in Harrisburg, PA, only a few miles from our home. We put in a good performance there, but given the level of competition we finished well down the list of placements.

In his work with Therapy Dogs International, he shows exceptional understanding of the fragile nature of some of the people he is greeting. Despite all his high-energy games in agility, he seems to know that when he's wearing that red bandanna and visiting people, he has to be calm and gentle. We have visited nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Albuquerque NM and Lawrence KS while in town for the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America, in addition to our work in central Pennsylvania with TDI and the PA State Animal Response Team.

We are working in Master level agility in AKC, and he just earned his UKC Agility Champion EXcellent title in November 2014. He had a set back in his agility career with a bad elbow OFA finding, but the very talented Dr. Sherman Canapp at the Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine practice in Jessup, MD got him back in the ring. 2014 CSPCA National Specialty Agility Trial in Topeka KS

the Silver Springs Animal Clinic in Mechanicsburg, Really is back to running and hopefully has more achievements to come in agility.

Our newest game is scent work. Really has been training with Joan Dandy at Dandy Dog Training near Newville, PA for about 2 years now, and passed his NACSW Odor Recognition Test in June 2013. Recently the Blue Ridge K9 Training Center near Gettysburg PA started offering Canine Work

And Games (C-WAGs) scent work trials. Really completed he C-WAGs Scent Patrol (CW-SP) title on November 16, 2014. This was the last requirement we needed for the CSPCA Versatile Shar-Pei Championship. Don't think for a second this means Really and I are done. As I write this we already have

entries in for UKC Obedience Trials where we are working on our U-CDX. We want to get his Obedience Utility titles in UKC and AKC, and who knows where we can go from there. Stay tuned.

Recently I have been thinking about my Lhasas ( past and present) and some of the more memorable moments of their show careers. My first obedience dog was named Baby Ming Squeezicks. In a  Novice obedience show in Boston 1990 we were doing our off leash heeling pattern and Ming laid down on his back and rolled and thrashed around to his heart's content. There were tv cameras there and apparently some of the spectators later saw Ming on the news. One person told

me he "would never forget that dog!" The judge was nice enough to suggest Ming had an ear infection which did prove to be true. Needless to say my face turned scarlett. At one outdoor show in Mass. the spectators sat on a hill overlooking the rings. When Ming did not get up on the "drop on recall" exercise the crowd began shouting "Get up Ming, Get up Ming." At least he had a cheering section. When I threw the dumbell over the high jump, Ming went over the jump and just stood looking at the dumbell. The judge gave him a lot of

time to pick it up. When Ming did not pick up the dumbell the judge reached down to get it and Ming snatched it away from her and brought it over the jump to me. Some adults and children were too close to the ring at one indoor show and were eating sandwiches. The judge went over to them screaming "Get away from my ring !" The screaming and waving her hands in the air did chase them away and Ming earned a cdx leg there. Ming did earn the Certificate of Canine Distinction for being "one of the Highest Scoring Dogs in the Nation" in 1991. Ming and I were also asked to be on  cable tv in Winthrop, Mass in 1993 and 1994.The pet program was called "Paws and Think". The first year we discussed and demonstrated some obedience work. The second year we discussed responsible dog ownership. My Mother's retirement home in Conn. asked us to perform. We were billed as "Watch Ming Do His Thing". When I left the room and told Ming to stay on the Long Down, his back was to me. The audience said he would have a stiff neck because for three minutes he had his head turned around looking for me. He was a good boy and did not get up. I always held my breath on the long sits and downs in Open. My Lhasas were usually placed next to  large dogs of questionable dispositions. I was afraid the big dogs would think mine were prey and go for them. Fortunately this did not happen. However at one Open show with Lilly UD the Yorkie next to Lilly attacked her. This dog really went for Lilly. The judge threw the handler and her dog out. Fortunately Lilly managed to compose herself (me too) and earned a cdx leg that day. Lilly earned the Certificate of Canine Distinction for being one of the highest scoring dogs in the Nation in both '94 and '95. Pong Sweet Pea and Ming were in one Brace Team. Pong was not interested in many classes or lessons and after he ruptured a disc I was through with his obedience lessons. He did know the basics and I did want to say he had been in one show. This was an outdoor show in Mass. in '92. When we were finished the judge sweetly whispered to me "I think your dog hiked his leg on the hedge" (during the heeling pattern). I told her "I know he did". At one of Luckee Fella's first Novice B shows in Maine I had to carry him from the car to the ring. The ground was all mud and the rings were literally under water. And the water was very cold. Fortunately I had boots on. The judge wore sneakers. I felt so sorry for Luckee working under those conditions. We stayed home the second day. At The  show in Topsfield, Mass. one year I had Luckee and his sire both entered. I was

working with Jet in Novice. Luckee had finished in Open and my Husband had him in the Pup Tent. Luckee was interested in a dog that passed by his tent and took off rolling the tent around the building, scattering dogs and handlers. Fortunately he did not hurt himself ! He did cause quite a comotion. One show Luckee was entered in for an RAE leg was a real disaster. It poured rain all day. The stewards had no clue. The jump heights were wrong and handlers were put in the wrong groups (A or B). A representative from the AKC was at ringside watching the fiasco. The judge was beside himself and the next day he brought his own stewards. Glenn and I took Jet one year with us to the National Specialty in Boston. (Moonpye's Black Satin, CD). I introduced him to a friend who was going to do the sits and downs with him. I had Luckee, who earned his CD title that day. Glenn had Mandi Ming ,CD and Betty had Jet. After the long sit, Jet left her and came looking for me. I did not dare move as I wanted Luckee to qualify. Jet had 15 seconds of a long down to earn his CD title in Providence, RI. He got up just before the time and I know it was because my Husband was standing behind him eating a donut. There was a see- thru plate glass divider between the ring and the food stand, but I swear Jet knew Glenn was there. We had a very quiet ride home back to Boston !!! Matt Dillon was working for a RE leg in Cumberland, Maine. This is in a metal building with a dirt floor. There is a surrey track next to the building and the horses are always going around. Many different smells for a city dog. I knew we were in trouble when Dillon did not want to get out of the car. He did not want to greet his dad when he got back to the car. I walked Dillon to the ring and told the stewards that this dog did not want to be there and would probably bolt out of the ring. I had that right. The judge called me into the ring, I took the leash off and kept my hand on Dillon's collar. She said "Get your hand off his collar!" I did and off he went out of the ring looking for the car. Fortunately one of the spectators grabbed him. He did'nt like the pulling barn at the Topsfield Fairgrounds any better. These are some of the more memorable moments of my showing career. Not funny at the time, but Glenn and I were laughing about them last night. Always something to look back on and smile.

Thank you to Neil Evans for sharing the story of her Sheltie “Xena” in what Neil calls Xena's OTCH Odyssey. Particularly inspiring is how Neil continued to train and trial through recovery from breast cancer surgery and the chemotherapy treatments which followed.

“My little Xena was born a singleton on September 4, 2008. My long time Sheltie friend, Marilyn Ashby, told me about Xena, that she was going to be small, a trait I preferred due to our small condo and limited space. Her breeders, Julie Dickson and Gail Dickson, both lived in the Spokane area and agreed to deliver Xena to us at Vantage, Washington which was more or less midway between Spokane and Seattle. She was an adorable 8-week old blue merle. She traveled very well to her new home

without a peep and settled in with our two other Shelties, Tyche and Tag. I chose her name Xena because I liked the fictional character, the warrior princess, who was bold and beautiful

A NEW OTCH IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

and just. I was hoping the name would be a self fulfilling prophecy, but as my friends will all tell you I got only 50 per cent of the prophecy, the princess part!

“She has always been rather stand-offish and now, at age six, she still is. Xena was not what you would call a quick study in her obedience training, and I remember feeling quite dismayed that we were left in the dust by some of our classmates whose dogs seemed to catch on much quicker. I seemed to have trouble motivating her and she was so very different from Tag who lived and loved to work. I have often described Xena as peculiar. In agility she struggled with the noise from barking dogs and even the bang from the teeter. In obedience trials she would sometimes shut down. She might just stop heeling, leaving me to walk the pattern all by myself. Unlike many dogs that seem to feel more comfortable and improve their performances after showing in a second event at the same trial, Xena is almost always worse! She is less engaged with me and can be flat. This is true even in agility where her first run is usually faster than the second.

“Shortly after getting Xena I was shopping at my favorite ‘bling’ store, Christine Alexander. I spotted a pretty t-shirt with rhinestone letters proclaiming ‘I want it all!’ That's what I wanted for my puppy Xena and me, a MACH and an OTCH. Since I was almost certainly having delusions of grandeur, I did not buy the shirt.

“Xena can run hot and cold and I have not always been very good at predicting what circumstances contribute to either, but in general she seems to perform better either outdoors or in very cold, dirt floor horse arenas. Then, having said that, she did very well at the recent Sammamish KC trial held indoors at Puyallup, winning a 1st place in Utility B worth 20 points! A lot seems to depend on her mood so I've tried to get her to play before going into the ring. Lately she has seemed happier when performing which I hope will last!

“I think it took a village for Xena to get her OTCH. I've relied heavily on my obedience instructor, Laurie Weaver, and on several wonderfully patient friends who shared their ideas and more than once had to console me when I left the ring in tears, vowing to quit. My good friend and inspiration, Sandy Burr, would sometimes help me by taking Xena aside just before we would go into the ring. If you knew Xena at all you would know that she doesn't really like anybody (except my husband and me) and especially resents being made to work for someone else. So she would be relieved to see me after Sandy ‘tortured’ her with two or three minutes of signals or heeling and would work harder in the ring for me. Sandy ALWAYS told me that we could do it, that we could get that OTCH even when I seriously doubted it myself.

“Here is Xena's timeline: CD - 1/12/13, CDX - 2/23/13, UD - 6/29/13, MACH - 8/17/13, UDX - 1/13/14 and OTCH - 1/30/15.

“During most of this timeline I had my own challenges. In December 2012 I had some fibrocystic breast lumps biopsied, which the surgeon recommended having removed. In January of 2013 they were removed and I was shocked to learn that they were actually part of a very aggressive Stage 2 cancer! Before that date I had tried to simply not believe in cancer. After all, didn't it just happen to morbidly obese, chain smoking couch potatoes? I had never been any of those! I had been naively smug in my supposedly healthy lifestyle. After feeling that my body had betrayed me, I underwent bilateral mastectomies followed by many months of toxic chemotherapy. I was very impatient to get through it quickly and very frustrated that it had to be postponed by a week several times

during the course due to low white blood counts. Regardless, I was determined to carry on with all of my activities and goals--running, the gym, obedience and agility classes and trials. Some days I felt like crap, but would still at least go through the motions of pretending my life was still normal. Doing what I could gave me a feeling of having some control, to replace the feelings of powerlessness that came with that terrible diagnosis. I remember competing in a weekend of agility trials with Xena during the time I felt the worst, but coming away with two days of QQs!

“I told relatively few people about what was going on. My hair fell out but I had some fun with wigs. I didn't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I had tremendous support from several people, but particularly my husband who drove me to every treatment and appointment, and a wonderful friend who spent a lot of time hand holding and consoling me in my darkest hours. Looking back, I don't know how she spared the time from her very demanding and stressful job! Well, now I'm all ‘reconstructed’ and have my own hair again, and hoping that this chapter of my life is completely over. I guess I mentioned this because I'm hoping to encourage others who might have similar challenges to try to keep their goals in mind and do what you can to carry on, even if you can only do a little. You will feel better for the accomplishment and not so powerless.

“Looking ahead, I plan to continue working with Xena in agility, maybe to see if we can earn another MACH. Xena seems to genuinely enjoy agility, even letting out a little ‘woof!’ now and then when she works up a head of steam. We will participate in obedience trials but probably fewer than in the past. I do need to get to work on Xena's

little brother, Jack, who just turned one year old. It took Xena almost six months to start playing with little Jack! Even now she gets very angry with him and often gives him her wonderful snarly face! All three dogs love beach walks but have trouble understanding why we can't go at high tide--what happened to our beach??

“We are planning a car trip this spring with all three dogs, hitting the Motel 6’s down the coast to Santa Barbara and back. It's just not a vacation without my dogs! On to the next adventure!

“I would like to thank Xena's breeders, Julie Dickson and Gail Dickson, for my wonderful little dog! In spite of everything, I love all of her ‘perfect imperfections’ and have decided to keep her!

“Words of advice? Know your dog. Work with what you've got and just don't give up!”

It’s wonderful seeing a healthy Neil back with a head of her own curly, blonde hair as she continues training and showing. Congratulations on your newest OTCH! She has OTCH-titled every Sheltie she has owned and trained and Xena is her fourth to earn the OTCH title.

A NEW UD-TITLED GOLDEN RETRIEVER

Terri Kaluza’s quest for the UD title on her Golden Retriever was not without challenges, but she never gave up. Thanks to Terri for sharing the story of her journey to the UD with “Kahne.”

“Kahne earned his UD in February; I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to say that. I knew that he had it in him, he had the training, the breeding and the drive. So why did it seem so elusive? This is our story on earning the Utility Dog title.

“I’m very blessed to have this little red dog; he’s not the first that I’ve gotten from our breeder, Laurie Weaver, nor the last. She has bred some very nice dogs that do very well in obedience, including Zoom, a two time NOI winner.

“When Kahne was a puppy I would say that he was ‘scary smart,’ like when I would take him out to teach him something new, he already knew it! I’m not saying we didn’t have to work the exercises and perfect them, but he had the general idea. So, I’m thinking this is going to be easy…. yeah, right!

“We had our issues in the beginning. In Novice and Open he had to gain his confidence, but once he understood the game he did quite well. Then about two years ago we started our

hunt for his UD. I didn’t expect it be quick but I really didn’t expect it be two years! So many times I was told by the judge ‘He’s so close, I bet he’ll do it tomorrow.’ Well, he didn’t qualify the next day; in fact, sometimes he looked like he had never seen any of the Utility exercises before. There were many times I left the ring telling the judge that Kahne really does know these exercises. We kept working and he came very close many times. Sometimes, he’d be qualifying only to miss the last jump. I’d hear the sigh from the crowd and then the judge would tell me ‘He’s so close, maybe tomorrow.’ I’d also hear things like ‘He’s having so much fun’ (that’s not always a good thing but at least he was enjoying his time in the ring) or ‘I love his energy.’ What I really loved hearing the most was when someone I had never met would approach me when we came out of the ring and tell me they just loved watching us. That they could see the awesome relationship we have. This is what kept me going, not just the title but the journey that we were on together, having fun and continuing to build a more solid relationship with each training session and each time we entered the ring.

“So, we started this year to continue our pursuit of that UD. At our first show of the year (three days of trials) he failed miserably the first day. I thought about pulling him, but I did show him the next day and he qualified! It was our worst score ever, but we did qualify! Together we had fumbled our way through our first leg. Then he did it again on Sunday. I wasn’t sure what was different--maybe all the stars aligned just right but, for whatever reason we now had two legs and I was ecstatic.

“So I entered him again a month later to see if it had just been a fluke. On Saturday he failed, not terribly but no better or worse than past runs. The judge again said ‘He’s so close, maybe tomorrow.’ This time he did it! Our run was far from perfect but it felt good. What I’m most proud of that day is when he made a couple of mistakes and he fixed them without any help and he saved the Q and ended up with a decent score.

“Now, we both have more confidence. I know we can do it and that we’ll continue to improve on our scores. It’s been a wonderful journey and it’s far from over. Next goal is UDX and, who knows, maybe even an OTCH, as long as he’s still having fun in the ring we’ll continue showing. I’m very lucky to be the teammate of UCDX UROG Spirit’s Life in the Fast Lane BN, CD, GN, CDX, GO, UD, RE, CA, Kahne!”

Congratulations to Terri and Kahne on their UD achievement! We’ll be waiting to hear of more success in the obedience ring!

Last summer the Imperial Polk Obedience Club (http://www.ipoclakeland.org) of Lakeland, Florida, announced that they were hosting a two-day dog obedience training seminar, presented by Victory Hulett, to be held on the weekend of January 10th through the 11th, 2015. The club asked her to address specific exercise problem areas. I quickly decided to sign up for the January seminar and learn how Victory teaches the selected exercises from start to finish.

Many of us over the years have attended numerous seminars, finding each successful teacher has personal philosophies, new ideas or twists to old methods that can improve our dog’s and our own performance in the ring. While Victory is new to the seminar circuit, her background brings years of experience in many avenues of dog training. For example her understanding of Schutzhund helped in the development of her method for teaching scent work, and her experience helping owners with aggressive dogs gives her insight into the behaviors of dogs that are dominant or pushy.

When Victory entered the AKC obedience ring in 2009 with her Shetland Sheepdog, Juda, she set the bar for herself with a High in Trial from the Novice A class. Soon afterwards she acquired Border Collie Reign as a seven-week-old puppy, whose career is now obedience history. Team Victory and Reign, now OTCH He Reigns in Victory OGM UDX, have earned over a hundred High in Trials and High Combined wins, over twenty perfect two-hundred scores and have been awarded the prestigious Purina Pro Plan’s Top Obedience Dog of the Year for both 2013 and 2014. It was only natural that exhibitors would ask how she did all that with Reign in a mere four years. In response, Victory took to the road and is now conducting seminars.

Saturday, the 10th of January, Victory started promptly on schedule at nine o’clock but with no big ado about her impressive wins with Reign. She let her record speak for itself and immediately dug in to the first requested topic, which was teaching the Utility articles. A

good teacher initially demonstrates a finished product to students then explains and shows how to attain that result. Victory brought out Reign from his crate and played a hearty game of tug to wake him up. Reign was barking and tugging, obviously anxious to work and play and engage with Victory, a sign of enthusiasm and teamwork.

Victory demonstrated with Reign the steps she uses to teach a new dog Utility scent articles. Then she asked for working spot teams to come into the ring to teach their dogs, as she explained in detail each stage of the process to all the attendees. While the audit folks were furiously taking notes, working teams were ecstatic that each of their dogs showed enthusiasm while learning something new. For most of the dogs this was a new method of learning. Working teams also had the opportunity to have Victory’s one-on-one assistance, as needed. It was beneficial for all to learn her new technique which is definitely an unusual twist on the standard method of teaching article indication. I’ll give you a hint. Victory doesn’t use food or force to teach Utility scent articles.

Both before lunch and afterwards Victory recapped her scent article method, and asked for any additional questions. Then she proceeded to the next topic, something which is necessary for all Novice, Open and Utility exercises: focus. Before I go on to the big reward in the sky, I want a dog that watches me at all times while we are in the obedience ring: heeling, between exercises and during exercises, and especially the signal exercises.

The training starts the day you bring your puppy home. Victory outlined what her expectations are for consistent attention by the dog which, after all, is a respect issue and a sign that the dog trusts that you as a handler will keep him/her safe as he/she keeps undivided attention on you and the assigned task. For this session, the working teams were divided into 3 groups based on their dog’s level of experience. That way, participants could observe separately those dogs: that were more proficient at maintaining a focused watch, the group that had learned to focus on their owners but were unable yet to maintain it, and finally, the dogs still learning the meaning of focus. Victory spent considerable time with each group. Don’t think for a minute that no one asked questions. Many people offered the, “What about”, and “How do I fix” type questions, which Victory answered with Southern humor and decisiveness. At no point was she at a loss for words or ideas on how to fix a problem.

With a huge approximately 80’ x 60’ matted ring, there was plenty of room to work the Utility “go out” portion of the Directed Jumping exercise. Each handler worked their dog to the distance they could handle and Victory offered critiques on how to make each dog understand their job. Victory also has an excellent understanding of the AKC “rules of the game”. How is the judge going to score this exercise? Would your dog’s “go out” earn no points off?

Sunday January 11th, Victory again started promptly at 9 a.m. stating the Open and Novice exercises that were on the agenda. Victory asked first for any questions or concerns from the previous day’s work and reviewed where necessary. Who doesn’t like that? Sometimes, as she suggested, people go home and wonder if they heard and understood correctly, or perhaps they forgot to ask a question. There was always time for more clarification at Victory’s seminar. No one should have left puzzled about a topic.

Victory worked with each group’s experience-level on the drop on recall, retrieve on the flat, and heeling exercises. She ensured that if there were any reactive dogs that they work alone. Safety was paramount in her seminar.

It was obvious from the start that Victory’s seminar was not going to be rushed. She was tireless and very patient, making sure each person with a working spot actually had an opportunity to work their dog at the appropriate level, and most importantly, that the handler understood the criteria and knew how to advance to the next level. Although she had several topics to be covered, there was plenty of time to answer questions, go back to basics if necessary, or even to go off on a tangent where it would benefit everyone. And, everyone was allowed to video for their own use.

Victory did not force her training philosophies and methods on anyone. In her seminar she shows you what has worked for her and Reign. She was amenable to adaptation if people wanted to continue with some aspect of their training that has worked for them, and help them integrate aspects of her method with others.

As Sunday afternoon wound down, I could tell from the comments that the handlers were excited about many of Victory’s training methods. Their dogs were tired from working, but also from playing too. After all, Victory does call her methodology, “The Joy of the Exercise”. When the dog is learning through play, rather than compulsion and without a plethora of food treats or perhaps not “pattern trained” every day, the dog learns to have an expectation of a game and having fun. If the dog takes that attitude into the ring, there’s a chance you can relax and enjoy not only showing your dog, but showing off your dog’s performance. I’m all for that.

It has been a while since I have had information/brags to report, and I’m not doing a lot this month but I do have a few things to report, although some of them are older than others.

Nancy Grimm and her Weim Gimlet have been busy. Gimlet finished her Breed Championship at the Texas Kennel Club shows on Dec 6 with a 3 point Major

She also just finished her NA at the CSMSC (Cactus State Miniature Schnauzer Club) trial this last weekend with a clean run and 1st place.  She also got a 1st place and her 2nd leg of her NAJ at that same trial.

New Barn Hunt title

My Australian Terrier Wally turned 10 and started exhibiting some stiffness problems that led me to retire him. We did, however, play one more game as a “farewell” party for my boy. He had two Barn Hunt Novice Rat Qs and only needed one more for his RATN title. He loves looking for the rats, although his indication and my calling the rat haven’t always been in sync we’ve had a wonderful time together playing this game.

On his first run he ran out of time before he found the rat. The 2nd and last run was his last time in a competition ring and he made the most of it. He not only found the rat, he gave a very clear indication (digging and barking at the tube) so I could call the “Rat” – and he did it all in 31.03 seconds for a first place. Needless to say I was beyond thrilled. Wally didn’t care at all about the title, but he sure did love that rat.

Two new RATCH titles in AZUnfortunately I don’t have details or photos but super congratulations to Nita Gandara and Australian Shepherd Bella for being the first RATCH dog in AZ on Feb. 7. Last weekend (Feb. 28-Mar 2) Stacie Strauss and Australian Shepherd Rex also finished their RATCH at the Fiesta Cluster in Scottsdale.

Introducing “Colt”

Steve Watterson welcomes home his new boy - Handheims' Peacemaker of Carlisle, call name 'Colt'.  Colt was born on November 23rd, 2014.   Brian and Dionne Carlisle (Carlisle Shepherds) and Kathy Hand (Handheims German Shepherds) are the breeders of this pup who is the daughter of Handheim's Eloquence in Motion, 'Ellie' and a son of 'Rocky' Am/Can Sel CH Karizma's Morocco Kaleef VonLoar, TC, OFA, CHIC.  Rocky is owned and loved by Kaleef Moses.

We brought this wonderful boy home at the age of 10 weeks.  Dionne had already started the leash training, crate training etc.  Colt's new daddy person, Steve Watterson, picked up the training as soon as Colt was home.  First time on the leash, he walked side by side with Steve with very little resistance.  It was like he was saying - 'oh,  you wanna go this way?

Okay, I will go with you!'  By the age of 11 weeks he was doing sit, stand, down, give me 5, front and learning to follow Steve's hand in targeting.  Colt is now 13 weeks old and is just a fabulous boy and wants to learn everything (sometimes all at once).    Steve was caught using the clicker to teach Colt how to bark on command.  Well, a clicker and a shoe.  Apparently, the old beat up shoe was the reward.  Be careful what you teach him Steve LOL!

Colt is confident, social and poised, very happy go lucky and is on his way to becoming a great Rally and Obedience dog, is a promising conformation dog and with any luck will do tracking as well.  We look forward to showing him in the performance rings this fall!

Ray and I had to say goodbye to our Chihuahua, Delia, in March 2014. We’d been on a waiting list for an Australian Terrier puppy and Webe was whelped Oct. 25, 2014. Champion Dunham Lake Take a Bow "Reba" and Canadian Champion Wilfnbell Red Bondi "Tailer" #2 Australian Terrier in Canada, Owned by Sylvia Knight.)

On Dec. 30th I flew to Siren, Wisc to meet my new puppy, an Australian Terrier from Dunham Lake Australian Terriers.

Webe and I flew home on Dec. 31. What a great way to end one year and start another.

I look forward to showing him in rally , obedience, Barn Hunt, conformation and possibly agility. He is an independent, argumentative, creative, intelligent soul who loves to learn and has a food drive to die for. He also just for fun – here is a picture to make you smile – two litters of Australian Terriers born 2 days apart. Webe would be the red male with the orange collar, although you can’t see the colors in the photo. Can you imagine getting all these puppies to “stay”? ;-)

Protocol for Tabulation & Publication

The F&F First & Foremost® Rating System ranks dogs and handlers competing in AKC all breed obedience competition. Teams that earn qualifying scores of 170 or more points in Open & Utility classes during a given competition year are included. Points are awarded based on the dog’s score according to a point schedule that accounts for variances in scores awarded by different judges (please see point table elsewhere in this report).

Ratings are published by Front & Finish® listing the top ten dogs ranking highest across all breeds (Top Ten All Breed), the top ten dogs ranking highest within their respective groups (Top Ten By Group), and the top ten dogs ranking highest by breed (Top Ten By Breed).  Dogs must receive a combined minimum of eight points for a given year to be listed, and all ties for a position are reported.

Dogs are listed with the recognized AKC titles they received during the competition year and they may not reflect current titles at the time of publication.
