ALONG THE GILABy Sam Hosler

Special to Copper Area News

In 1971, the cartoonist Walt Kelly drew a two-panel set featuring Pogo and his friend Porkypine. The first panel

shows them walking in a beautiful forest. Porkypine says, “Ah, Pogo, the beauty of the forest primeval gets me in the heart.” Pogo, stepping on a nail, replies, “It gets me in the feet, Porkypine.” The second panel shows them gazing at the same forest, and the whole area is filled with old tires, cans, broken glass, and other items. “It is hard walking’ on this stuff,” says Porkypine. And Pogo, his head on his hands, says, “Yep, son, we have met the enemy and he is us.” I feel the same way about the amount of wildcat dumping in this part of Arizona. Recently, the Kearny firing range was despoiled with someone’s trash, and more incidents of malicious trashing have been reported along the Gila River. Last year, people invaded private property on the high point of a wash in Kearny to dump a considerable amount of garbage. The dumping often takes place in the

Wildcat Dumping in the Copper Corridor

most beautiful of areas, especially along the Gila and the San Pedro. When I see it, I think, “Why would someone want to foul their own place of recreation, much less spoil things for others?” And it gets worse, for on holiday weekends

June is here, with Father’s Day coming up, it’s time to honor the dads! I am so thankful for my father, even though it seemed like he was gone at work most of the time. He probably had to with seven of us kids at home. Along with a little baseball, how to swim, how to use a hammer, I was taught to be honest, respectful of others, to work hard and to do my very best in every situation. I worked at my father’s grocery store in grade school, where I probably learned the most from my father. By about the fourth or fifth grade I had learned everything there was to learn, (or so I thought)! I decided to go into business for myself. My dad encouraged me in all my early business ventures; mowing grass and plowing snow in the cold Ohio winters. Little did I realize at the time, my dad had subsidized my businesses! I used the family rakes, shovels, lawn mower and tractor for my jobs. Looking back I think he paid for the gas too! Just like God, our heavenly Father, he was there to love

us, support us, encourage us, and giving us all the tools we need to succeed! My dad was there, even when he wasn’t! I remember getting into trouble and my mother (who seemed to always be there when I got into trouble) would say: “wait till your father gets home”! With those six words he kept me in line even though he wasn’t home! Having a father around made all the difference in the world! Today in America 43% of our children live in a home without their birth father! How it hurts me to think of families without their dads. At Family First we are here to support our fathers. Through our Fatherhood program we encourage the dads to be the best they can be, to support and encourage the mother of their children and to love them. We are also here to support the moms without a father in the home. We help the single moms fill the role of both for their children, sometimes which can be hard. Dads – be there for your kids, be there for the mother of your children! Whether you realize it or not; you are the

Dad Was There

biggest influence in your child’s life—there or not! It’s been said, moms are the glue that holds families together, I believe dads are the wood! They are the building material all our children need to grow, to build into happy, healthy, and successful lives! Let’s all take time this Father’s Day to honor the dads, all that they do and have done, and remember the ones who are not with us now! The Coronado National Forest, Santa Catalina Ranger District, has temporarily closed Rose Canyon Campground until further notice due to wildlife activity in the area. A black bear was active in the campground recently and aggressively attempted to enter a trailer at 5:30 a.m. The bear was last seen moving toward the lake, a popular recreation area. The campground will remain closed until further notice for public safety purposes. Developed camping opportunities can be found nearby at Spencer Canyon Campground. Dispersed camping areas (without developed facilities) can be found on Bigelow Road and Oracle Control Road. Recreationists are reminded to be “bear aware” to include the following:• Keep picnic and camping areas clean at all times.

Bear activity forces temporary closure of campground on Mt. Lemmon• Clean cooking utensils after meals.• Stow food and garbage out of sight and smell range of wildlife. Use bear-proof food and garbage receptacles where provided.• Wash hands and face with non-perfumed soap, and

Tamatha “Tami” Villar has come home. Oh, sure. She has never lived in the Copper Corridor. But this is home for her. On June 1, she officially took her place at the helm of the Hayden and Mammoth Police Departments as chief. One of the things Villar is most excited about is the connection with the people of the Copper Corridor and the “warmth and richness of relationships.” Villar officially retired from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office on May 31. She began her career in law enforcement in 1997 at the Eloy Police Department after graduating from CARLOTA, the police training academy once run by the Central Arizona College. She then transferred to the county in 2000. She was the region’s Sergeant in 2004 and was promoted to Lieutenant and served out of the San Manuel office from 2007 to 2010. She came back in September 2012 but was reassigned in March 2014. She never intended to go right back to law enforcement after she retired. Instead, she planned to use her education degree and teach second grade. “Rainbows and unicorns,” she said. That’s what she was looking forward to most about retirement. But an opening as the regional police chief for the Hayden, Mammoth and Kearny Police Departments was announced and Villar quickly jumped at the chance to apply, excited about the possibility of returning to the Copper Corridor. What began more than two years ago as a “what if” exercise at the monthly “Five Mayors’ Meeting” evolved into this position that Villar now holds. The Mayors of Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman and Mammoth, with input and assistance from the Mayor of Superior, began working on a process to hire a chief of police that could lead all three individual police departments. Winkelman pays a contract to the Town of Hayden to provide police services in their community. Hayden took the lead to manage the advertising, posting and interviewing of the police chief, in November they made an employment offer to Sgt. David Blue who has served as an interim chief for all three of the communities over the past year. Blue turned the job down, so the hiring process began again. In March, the Town of Kearny pulled out of the selection process, voting to hire

its own Police Chief instead of sharing one with the other towns in the Copper Corridor. Kearny has offered the top cop job to Joseph Turitto. He has yet to begin working. The town is still checking his background. In late March, Hayden offered the job to Villar. She assumed the position of Interim Police Chief on April 2 and was officially sworn in on June 6. Villar is more than qualified for the position. Tami has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the AZ POST Board, AZ Department of Juvenile Corrections Discipline Oversight Board, CAVIT LE Advisory board and others. She has vast training and expertise in Criminal Investigations, specifically in Sex Crimes, Homicide, Domestic Violence, Human Trafficking and Child Abuse. Most recently she was responsible for the Criminal Investigations Bureau at PCSO where she had direct oversight of all operations for the following units; Robbery/Homicide, Persons Crimes, Property Crimes, Anti-Human Smuggling, Pinal County Regional Narcotics Task Force, Pinal County Regional SWAT Team, Crime Scene Investigations, Computer Forensics, Sex Offender Registration and Tracking, Victims Services, and FBI Uniform Crime Reporting. Throughout her 20 years in law enforcement, she served in various capacities as a Patrol Deputy, School Resource/DARE Officer, Detective, Sergeant (both in Patrol and various specialty units), Public Information Officer, Critical Incident Stress Management Coordinator, Lieutenant (Patrol, Media, Community Services, and Criminal Investigations), and Captain. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice/Political Science, a Masters Degree in Human Relations/Counseling, a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education, a Graduate Certificate in Management and Organizations, and is a proud graduate of the 249th Session of the FBI National Academy. Villar has a lot of work to do with the two departments. Both departments have been without structured leadership for quite a while and both departments are undermanned. “There are great people and staff (at both departments),” Villar said. Hayden has six full time officers and one civilian employee. Villar would like to hire one more full-time officer to round out the roster. Mammoth has three full

time officers, with two more in the hiring process. Mammoth has been utilizing reserve officers to fill out the shifts. When the departments are fully staffed, the officers will be able to cover the shifts 24/7 and pull back on the use of reserve officers for vacation coverage only. She also plans to address the reserve program with the Mammoth Town Council. Most police departments do

not pay reserves. Kearny and Mammoth, unlike 99 percent of other towns in Arizona, pay police reserves. Reserve officers, Villar explained, are usually retirees and are not usually local residents. She would like to recruit locally. “Hiring and recruiting locally improves your longevity,” she explained. “The officers are more invested if they are

neighbors.” She wants to bring community service back to the departments “because the communities deserve it.” She wants the officers to be out in the community, interacting with the people. “I have a passion for this,” Villar said. “I do this work FOR the community service.” June isn’t the easiest time to take over two police departments. Villar has landed right in the middle of budgeting season. In spite of the lack of stable leadership over the years, the two towns have done a remarkable job keeping the departments well funded. “Hayden,” she said, “has taken proactive measures to bring stability to the town and the department.” Mammoth Councilmembers, she added, are truly invested in the community. “It’s not about a personal agenda for either council,” she said, adding that they have “realistic expectations” of the two police departments. Villar has already begun working on the policies and procedures for the two departments, aiming for regional consistency. She hopes to extend that consistency through the Kearny area when Turitto takes his place in the Kearny

Police Department. She and Turitto, Villar explained, have similar backgrounds and personalities. She is looking forward to working with him. Hayden has some hurdles for her. The department has been investigating a series of arson calls in the San Pedro and Hayden areas. Villar said that Gila County has been helping the Town address issue of condemning abandoned properties. Town ordinances must be passed to give the police authority to clear out squatters in buildings that have no utilities (water, electric). The town is also in the process of finding owners of the properties and getting them to secure the properties, a very slow process. The department is working with arson investigators from Globe and Phoenix to help them investigate the suspicious fires. It’s a lot of work to be sure, but Villar is up for the challenge. She’s always willing to stop and talk to the residents of the towns she now serves. She’s not hard to miss. She is in full uniform just like the officers under her command. Welcome home, Tami. We can’t promise you unicorns, but you can definitely find some rainbows in the Copper Corridor!

SELF-HEALINGBy John Huntington

Special to the Miner

With my parents’ help I walked out of the San Manuel Hospital,

unsteady after a week of doctor prescribed bed rest. I had hurt my back jumping off the house, and now the promise of a popsicle and a family visit was the only bright spot in this long-gone medical treatment for back pain, common in 1956. Thirty years later in the back pain field, we have a “Knowledge Opinion Leader” (read a respected, well-paid physician), promoting to doctors and the public the synthetic heroin drug Oxycontin as a “wonder of nature”, having high effectiveness for pain control with “less than 1% chance of addiction”. These drugs then became the go-to med for even common low back pain, instead of being mostly reserved for end of life care. I am compelled to point out that the pain relief market is much larger than hospice demands. Five states are now suing the manufacturer for false advertising. Now, with 91 Americans dying from overdose daily, the American College of Physicians has issued guidelines calling for increased use of non-drug, hands-on treatments like chiropractic, physical therapy,

yoga, massage, acupuncture, and the like. They say opioids should never be the first-line choice for pain. This is great, but late, news. In 1994, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research reviewed low back pain care and recommended spinal manipulation as one of a few first tools for this common condition. It advised waiting on surgery and other invasive actions. Political pressure quickly grew from surgeons, who feared loss of insurance coverage should their service be shown to be no better than non-surgical remedies. This pressure dovetailed with a “reduced government” approach by a new Republican House, and in 1995 the Agency’s name and function was changed, with “Policy” removed from both its title as well as its role. New low back pain guidelines were then released, advising short-term opioids, Ibuproben (shown recently to raise heart attack risk within first days to month of use) and Tylenol (which new studies show doesn’t help with low back pain, is a liver risk, and flattens emotions in the patient). Spinal manipulation was

not mentioned. One lesson to learn, or perhaps more accurately “re-learn”, is that this problem appears to have been motivated by money only. When we realize the TV and media most of us watch are run mostly on ad dollars from drug companies and, at election time, politicians, it is clearer why we don’t get the full story until it is too late. The Sea Lions Swim Team hosted a swim meet in Mammoth against the Globe Piranhas on Saturday, June 10. The Sea Lions won the meet with 1114 points, while the Piranhas finished with 173 points. The Sea Lions looked very good as they won 76 out of the 89 events at the meet. Many times, the best competition came from teammates. In the 11-12 Girls age group, three different Sea Lions won individual events. Mia Dale won the Breaststroke, Nevaeh Derrick won the Backstroke, and Briana Castellanos won the IM, Fly, and Freestyle events. Add Ashlee Parker into the mix and the relays are very good; perhaps even the best in the League this summer. Eight Sea Lions’ records were broken at the meet. Tabitha Kellam, Darien Apuron, Evan Apuron, Hunter Hill, AJ Lopez, and Riley Stewart all bettered team records. Tabitha edged out the 13-14 Girls 200 Individual Medley (IM) record previously held by Gianna Sweeney. Darien improved the mark in the 15-18 Girls 200 IM (previously held by Maya Gort) and the

100 Backstroke, which was previously held by her older sister Amara. Evan Apuron broke 3 individual records previously held by Will Newman in the 200 IM, 100 Breaststroke, and 50 Free. Evan was joined by Riley Stewart, AJ Lopez, and Hunter Hill in the Medley Relay to break a team record set in 2009 (Parker Gray, Colten Smith, Wayne Newman). Five Sea Lion Swimmers entered the maximum number of events and won them all. Annie Nemons (6), Simon Fletcher (6), Jocelyn Hudson (7), Julie Ramirez (10), and Tabitha Kellam (13) each won all of the events they swam at the meet. The following swimmers had first place finishes on Saturday:Annie Nemons, 6, (Fly, Back, Breast, Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Simon Fletcher, 6, (Fly, Back, Breast, Free);Jocelyn Hudson, 7, (IM, Fly, Back, Breast, Free, 50 Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay);Arianna Ervin, 9, (Medley Relay, Free Relay);Jessica Rouse, 9, (Medley Relay, Free

Jessi Rice, 16, (Medley Relay, Free Relay);Daniel Garcia, 16, (Free, Medley Relay, Free Relay); Four swimmers competed in their first meet as Sea Lions. Four year old Sakura Andrade swam the Breaststroke and finished in 2nd place among 6 and under Girls. Sakura had enough energy to also swim the Freestyle to another second place finish. Arianna Ervin (9) competed in 6 events finishing in the top 4 in all her individual events. Arianna was also a member of both the winning Medley and Freestyle Relays in the 9-10 Girls age group. Adrian Garcia (11) swam all eight of the events in his age group. He had a great first meet and earned ribbons for his 2nd place relay swims. Daniel Garcia (16) was a key member of both the 15- 18 Boys winning relays, and all who saw Daniel win the 50 Freestyle know how quickly he has improved in his first year of swimming. Martin Madrid was named Sea Lions Beast of the Week. Martin practiced very hard all week, and he learned how to do racing flip turns. He swam all the events and achieved best times in every one. He won the Backstroke and was part of the winning Medley and Free Relays. His Beastly decision to use his new turns in all his races was the key to his success at the meet. The Sea Lions will host a meet against the Parkside (Florence) Piranhas at the Mammoth Pool on Saturday, June 17. There is still time to join the team - contact Alex or Wendy Gort at 896-2190 or stop by the Mammoth Pool between 4 and 6 p.m. (Monday-Friday) for more information.

Rocky Andrade (11) and his younger sister, Sakura Andrade (4), recently participated in a few USA Wrestling State events. Both are members of the San Manuel Comets wrestling program coached by Daniel Najera. Sakura won her first State Championship in the Girls Freestyle Rookie 37 lb. division. A week later, she won her second State title in the Boys Freestyle Rookie 35 lb. Division Earlier in the year, Rocky won the USA Novice 140 lb. Folkstyle State Title. A few weeks ago, he won the

Novice 140 lb. Greco Roman State title, and recently he won the Novice 140 lb. Freestyle State title to give him his second Triple crown in three years. This adds to his impressive resume which includes Rocky’s seven USA wrestling State Championships , one USA Swimming State Championship , two Triple Crowns and three National Championships It looks like wrestling is a family affair, after all, as both Rocky and Sakura are the younger cousins of former San Manuel Wrestling State Champions P.J and John Ponce, Abe Arbizu and Daniel Najera.

HEALTH ISSUESBy Dr. Michael Miles

Special to the Miner

We are blessed in the high desert with slightly cooler temperatures than in the

surrounding desert areas. However, as the temperature rises around us it is important to understand how to survive in inhospitable conditions as it is a real possibility to find ourselves stranded or injured while out hiking, exercising, horseback riding or in a disabled car. It may be no surprise that water, shade and rest are critical considerations when in a hot environment. But, can you recognize the difference between heat exhaustion and the life threatening signs of heat stroke? And, do you know what to do to recover from both? Heat disorders are the result of an overextension of your body’s cooling mechanisms as regulated by the hypothalamus that is found in the brain. As the body heats up, the hypothalamus dilates the blood vessels near the skin to dissipate the heat and increases sweat that evaporates off and cools the body.

Excessive sweating can lead to the loss of body minerals and cause muscle cramping. Further loss of minerals can result in heat exhaustion that presents as fatigue, dizziness, nausea, restlessness and headache. The skin is usually pale and clammy, breathing is fast and shallow, and the pulse is rapid and weak. First aid measures include rest in a shady area and drinking plenty of water (with salt added if possible). If unconscious, lay the person on their back and raise their feet above their head. If the hypothalamus malfunctions, the body may lose its ability to cool itself through sweating, etc. and its temperature may soar to over 107 degrees. This is heat stroke and is life threatening. Certain drugs and fever conditions will affect the hypothalamus and its ability to regulate body temperature. Over-strenuous activity, unsuitable clothing, overeating, and excessive alcohol consumption may also disrupt the cooling process. The symptoms of heat stroke are hot, dry

skin, shallow breathing, and rapid, weak pulse. Immediate cooling is critical in this situation. Shade, rest and vigorous fanning will help. If water is available, it should be generously dumped on the person while fanning to increase evaporation. Professional medical attention is very important to determine the cause of the heat stroke and to protect against future episodes. To review, the first sign of a heat disorder is often muscle cramping. The second stage includes exhaustion, dizziness, nausea, restlessness and headache. The final and critical stage that is “heat stroke” presents as beet red, dry skin with very little sweat. The person can be delirious at this point and immediate attention is critical for survival. To protect against heat disorders, always have plenty of water, don’t overextend yourself and make sure people know where you are.Dr. Michael Miles’ Clinic is located at 15601 N. Don’t countenance littering or dumping in any form. Don’t tolerate so much as a cigarette butt on the beach. An open window

RAD, the new sanitation service, schedules large-item and brush pickups. Just call them at 520-881-4227 for information and to schedule a pickup. And a big “thank you” to the people who clean up this mess on their own, and make the issue known to others. You are the solution... if the rest of us get on board. On a happier note, when my wife and I bought our house in Kearny nineteen years ago, the first person we met was Mary Louise Eck, and we became next door neighbors. A better neighbor cannot be found. She and her family started Eck’s eatery uptown. The family grew up here. Mary Louise served as Town Librarian during the library’s formative years. She still serves on so many boards and committees that a full tally is impossible. This Saturday, June 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., all of us are invited to mark Mary Louise’s 90th birthday with a reception in Ray Hall of Good Shepherd Church. Mary Louise desires no gifts, even though her whole life is a gift to us. Just bring yourself.

Make loud noises, such as yelling, whistling, or banging pots and pans.• Don’t run or play dead.• Give the bear a chance to leave the area.• If the bear does not leave, stay calm, continue facing it, and slowly back away. Bear sightings should be reported immediately to the Arizona Game and Fish Department at (623) 236-7201, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.

By John HernandezSan Manuel Miner

Virginia Cannon is a former resident of San Manuel living there from 1971 - 1976. She has returned to the area after a successful career in the arts and entertainment industry. Virginia Nameth, as she was known when liv-ing in San Manuel, is the daughter of Dorothy and Stephen Nameth and the sister to Sioux, Laura and Joe. Her dad was the Assistant Mill Superintendent at Magma. Joe and Laura Na-meth graduated from San Manuel High School in 1973. Virginia attended Avenue B Elemen-tary School and was in the first 7th grade class at Gardner Middle School. She still has friends in the area. Virginia and her parents moved to Tennes-see where she graduated from high school. She then went to Atlanta, Georgia where she attended modeling school and later attended Georgia State University and Emory University majoring in Art History. Following school at the age of 25, she started her own art consult-ing company, where she specialized in hotel art collections. She enjoyed a long career doing art collections for Hyatt, Marriott, Doubletree, Westin, Loews and more. She then changed her focus to residential art collections in Nashville,

Tennessee. She put together art collections for individuals including celebrities Wynona Judd, Kid Rock, Alan Jackson and others. Virginia had moved to Nashville with her daughter Cheyenne in the year 2000. In 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, art collections became non-existent. She de-cided to switch careers and went to work in the entertainment industry. She first went to work for MHitchcock Management, who managed the careers of musical artists Emmylou Harris, Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Suzy Boggus, Danny Flowers and Monte Montgomery. She also worked each year for nine years in a row at the annual Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. Bonnarroo is the largest music festival in the United States. The four day festival attracts 100,000 campers each year. She worked in the artist catering tent and was in contact with ev-ery musician/artist that played at the festival. She later was offered the position of Director of Artist Relations for Voyage-Air Guitar. She was responsible for gathering artist endorse-ments for the guitar. In doing her work, she met many guitar players including some from Paul McCartney’s band, Marc Antony, Jimmy Buffet, Bob Seger, Hall and Oates and many more. She is proud of orchestrating a deal with legendary guitar player from the band Bon

Virginia Cannon returns to Tri-Community

Jovi, Richie Sambora. She had gone over to Sambora’s house in Los Angeles to show him the guitar which is a full sized acoustic car or electric guitar that folds at the neck for travel and can fit into a backpack. Richie got the idea to buy one hundred guitars and give them away to active military members. He gave them away at Camp Pendleton and it put the company on the news with every major network. Virginia was also responsible for product placement in TV/Movies. She was able to get the guitar on the television shows GLEE, Californication, and Homeland. The Voyage-Air Guitar was on Shark Tank four times and a deal was struck with Kevin O’Leary and Fender Guitars. After six years with Voyage-Air Guitar, the company laid off 90% of their staff. Virginia then moved on. Her connections in the world of TV and mov-ies landed her a partnership with veteran tal-ent manager, Karen Embry. Karen was based in Los Angeles and Virginia was in Nashville but she helped her manage a roster of actors that included Tilky Jones. Tilky was cast in “Pretty Little Liars and Single Ladies.” Her first placement landed him on five episodes of the TV show Nashville. For the last eight years, Virginia hosted a popular songwriting show titled Virginia Can-non Presents. In the weekly show, she hosted a group of songwriters that played in traditional rounds of three, sharing songs that they wrote. Virginia was also doing consulting with kids and their families for music and acting. She worked with 16-year-old Shania Paige and her parents, leading to a major record deal last year with Heart Songs Corporation. She

worked with many songwriters and perform-ers teaching songwriting and live performance coaching. Virginia moved to Oro Valley last year to help take care of her 93-year-old father who was living in San Manuel. She and her sister Laura were able to enjoy “a wonderful eight months celebrating Father’s Day and his 94th birthday” before he passed away in January. She currently has a part time job at Allegro School of Music in Tucson doing media coordi-nation, consulting and live performance coach-ing. Her services are offered to the public. These services include songwriting assistance & mentoring, music business education which includes music publishing, song pitching, per-formance rights and more. For more informa-tion visit www.allegroschoolofmusic.net. She has also brought her show “Virginia Cannon Presents” to Tucson at the Monterrey Court Studio Galleries, 505 W. Miracle Mile. She is lining up live musical entertainment every third Thursday of the month. Her next shows are on June 15 and July 20. She is look-ing for local talent to perform. You must be able to perform at least four original songs and accompany themselves or have an accom-panist. If you are a singer or songwriter and would like to perform live at Monterrey Court, you can contact Virginia at [email protected]. Virginia has done well for herself in the music and entertainment industry. She has brought her knowledge and talent back to Arizona. She would like to hear from old friends. Welcome back, Virginia, and good luck in your endeavors!
