Can’t you just see it now? The family gathering at the Thanksgiving table and enjoying all that delicious food?

Think of it … the stuffing, the pumpkin pie, the yummy mashed and sweet potatoes, the green bean casserole and the star of the feast the turkey!! But did you know that Thanksgiving is the day, out of all other days in the year, when most residential cooking fires occur? The U.S. Fire Administration reports that the number of residential building fire are more than double (2.3 times more) than the average number of fires in residential buildings on any other days during the year. According to the U.S Fire Administration the pattern of fires on Thanksgiving Day differ greatly from the national fire profile. It is important to understand how fires on Thanksgiving Day differ from the over all fire profile in the United States. Do you know during what time period that most of the fires occur? Almost 48% of Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when most people are preparing their scrumptious dinner. This time frame differs from the rest of the year when residential building fires caused by cooking peak during the “normal” dinnertime hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Why is there such a huge time difference between cooking on Thanksgiving versus a normal dinner time? It has to do with the amount of food being prepared. We cook way more food for the Thanksgiving feast than we do for our daily dinner meal. The U.S. Fire Administration further states that cooking was, by far, the leading cause of Thanksgiving Day residential fire at 77% with only 50% of residential building fires on any other day of the year. Add heating at 7% to those statistics as the next leading cause of residential fires on Thanksgiving. Most residential fires were limited to the room of origin and the object of origin, i.e. kitchen and stove/oven. These statistics reflect fires that occurred between 2014 – 2016. What should you do if a fire starts while you are preparing your Thanksgiving dinner? First turn off the heat source (oven or stove top burner). Second if the fire is on the stove top put a pot lid on top of the pot/pan and NEVER open it to check to see if the fire is out. By opening the lid, if the fire isn’t completely out you will be providing fresh oxygen to the fire

It’s the Start of the Fall Holiday Season: Time to Think ‘Safety’

causing it to re-ignite. The same goes for the oven. Turn off the heat source, keep the oven door closed until the fire is extinguished. Never, never, NEVER pour water on a grease or oil fire! When in doubt … CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT! Now let’s talk about turkey fryers. While fried turkey is a delicious alternative to an oven-baked turkey it can be very dangerous to fry a turkey. Most people overfill the oil they add to the pot of the fryer and when they turkey is added that causes the oil to splash over the edges of the pot. Here are some suggestions from FEMA for the safe use of a turkey fryer:• Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area. Use your turkey fryer only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface that is well away from anything that can burn. Make sure you have a child and pet free zone of at least 3 feet around your fryer to help prevent against burns.• An overfilled pot can cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. Determine the correct amount of oil needed by placing the turkey in the pot and filling with water to determine the “fill line”.• A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry before you fry it.• Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. Check the temperature often with a cooking thermometer so the oil won’t overheat.• The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer

Fire crews will begin burning slash piles from forest thinning on Mt. Lemmon Nov. 19 through 21, weather permitting. Burning will occur along the Catalina Highway, and in Spencer Canyon and

Whitetail Campground. Approximately 25 acres will be burned. “This project is intended to reduce hazardous fuels adjacent to local communities,” said Santa Catalina District Ranger Charles Woodard.

“It’s part of an ongoing fuels reduction project to reduce the threat of wildfire.” Smoke may be seen from Catalina Highway, Oracle, Summerhaven and Tucson.

No closures are anticipated. Motorists and recreationists are advised to use caution in the area, firefighters and fire engines will be present on and near roads, trails and recreation areas.

For anyone who’s ever seen a baby, toddler or preschooler open a gift and then toss aside the shiny new toy to instead play with the box, the American Academy of Pediatrics says kids may know what’s best for them. The organization recently came out with a recommendation that the best toys for young children are the simple ones. And we’re talking very simple, like everyday household objects. First Things First reminds parents that children explore and make sense of the world around them through play. In fact,

research has shown that play impacts everything from physical abilities and vocabulary to problem solving, creativity, teamwork and empathy. Playing with ordinary household items allows a young child to explore their world and found objects. With babies, it’s as simple as grasping an object and holding on to it. Families can focus on introducing objects that stimulate curiosity. Babies are fascinated by their surroundings, especially faces and bright colors. You can use something as simple as a small, lightweight

scarf to play peek-a-boo or use it as a prop as you make up stories. By adding music to the scarf play, you can get your baby moving and sharpen their listening skills as you give directions. For toddlers between 1 and 3 years old, look for objects that encourage imagination and problem solving. They enjoy playing hide-and-seek with different objects. As a toddler, your child may begin to arrange objects, which eventually turns into sorting and classifying them. This allows the child to develop thinking, reasoning and problem-

solving skills. For preschoolers from ages 3 to 5, look to use objects that will help preschoolers relate to each other and the world around them. Encourage their imagination by creating a pirate’s telescope using a paper towel roll. First Things First offers these 10 suggestions on every day household objects that can be used as toys that promote early learning: 1. Plastic cups – can be used to sort items.2. Toilet paper rolls – tape two together and

The Arizona Motorcycle Riders Association held its second to last round in Oracle, Arizona, earlier this month for the Freedom Hare Scrambles 2. This was the second time they would race in Oracle with the first time being in November 2018. The event was held at the 3-C Ranch. This course differed in the fact that there was no A split, meaning everyone from top pros to the C riders rode the same lines. The mini course also differed with the peewee class running down into the canyon they skipped earlier in the season. The supermini course was much faster and had a few sections of high speed action. For some, the championship could be clinched here and for others it was

opportunity to close up the points gap. The peewee riders took to the course first with yet again Deegan Fox (KTM) taking the overall win and the 65cc 7-9 class win. Finnigan Masten (KTM) would come second overall and in class, with Drake Powell (KTM) taking third in class and fourth overall. With Deegan Fox winning 8/9 races this season and only one round to go, he has locked down the 65cc 7-9 championship. Tagret Wasson, son of Factory Beta’s Joe Wasson, put on a stunning performance on his KTM 50cc and took third overall and first in the 50cc 7-9 class. Second and third would go to Kyle Riddle (KTM) and Ashton Kimbal (KTM). Riddle has easily clinched the class championship with a huge gap on second. The littlest guys with the biggest hearts came out and Cason Olvera

(KTM) took the win in the 50cc 4-6 class ahead of Edward Reim (KTM) and Ryan Mermelstein (KTM). Sean Riddle (7th place) leads the points championship only 14 points ahead of Myles Mcneil (5th place) going into the last round. The second race out was the bigger minis on a fast, flowy course. Dominic Craighill (KAW) and Samuel Campbell (TM) came onto the first lap with just a few second difference between them. Lap two held the same small gap between them with Campbell leading until a lap three crash left room for Craighill to take the lead. They’d come into scoring one second apart, but from there Craighill spent the next three laps putting a gap on Campbell. Overall Craighill would take the win with a two-minute gap on second place Campbell. Third place Chase Haynes (KAW) would

finish 11 seconds behind Campbell and keep only a 60 point gap behind Craighill going into the last round. The 85cc 12-14 had points leader Ruffin Dodson take the lap one lead but an unknown error took him out of the race after that, leaving Jeremiah Campbell (HON) to take the lead which he kept until the checkered flag. That leaves them tied in points going into the last race. Matthew Trapp (KTM) took third place and hold onto second in points by 135 points. The 85cc 9-11 had Jackson Powell (KTM) take the early lead and keep it the entire race until the finish. Jace Vogt and Griffin Harris (Both KTM) would take second and third. Vogt holds the points lead by 48 points ahead of Powell before the last race. The 65cc 10-11 saw Jon Nordling (KTM) take the lead from Rieder Lee (HON) on

Lee would hold third after his lap one lead and take third. Nordling and Heck are 20 points apart heading into the last race. The big bikes took to the course starting with the C riders on the newly laid out track. Yohaly Hernandez (HUSQ) would start the race fifth overall, but by lap three took the overall lead and held on for three more laps to take the overall win and the 250C win. Richard Evans (YAM) would finish second overall and second in class

behind Hernandez with Louis Be Blois (HUSQ) taking third overall and first in 40+C. The A/B race was much more heated with many more riders competing and the dust playing much more of a factor. The AA (Pro) class lined up with a lot of talent on the line. Factory Beta’s Joe Wasson and his teammate Mason Ottersberg battled all race with Wasson taking the lead on lap three and holding it until the checkered flag. The final gap Wasson put on his teammate was two minutes. AZ Dirtbike Training’s Ryan

Wells (KTM) took to the course with an injured wrist from a crash at the Idaho round of Endurocross but still put on a solid performance with a third place finish. Hard Enduro Outfitters Sherco rider Zack Brawner took fourth place and brother Nick Brawner took fifth. Points wise, Wells leads over Alec Brawner by 178 points, followed by Zack Brawner and Nick Brawner. On the B side, Kyler Horton (HUSQ) came out of a long break from riding and put on a very strong ride, ending with a first overall B and first Open B with a 4:30 gap

over second place and a 15th overall in the race. Thomas Parrella (KTM) took second Open B and second overall B. Drake Hacker (KAW) finished first 250B and third overall B. The round 12 stop brought competitors to a challenging course with a lot to offer. The Xtreme MC club handled the race well and the volunteer effort kept the racers safe and running smoothly. Next race is December 14-15 held in conjunction with the National Grand Prix Championship Series (NGPC) in Lake Havasu, Arizona. More info at AMRARacing.com

create binoculars for a game of I Spy. 3. Whisk – babies love to hold whisks, but as your child gets older you can use a whisk in the bath to swirl the water or make patterns in the sand. 4. Cardboard boxes – depending on the size, boxes can be used in a variety of ways. Facial tissue boxes make excellent building blocks to build towers. 5. Plastic containers – use to sort items by color and size, take them into the bath to pour water. 6. Leaves – rustling leaves outside. Let your toddler walk through a pile of leaves. They’ll enjoy the rustling and crunching sounds underneath their feet. For preschoolers, they can paint the leaves and use them to make patterns. 7. Screw-top plastic water bottle – fill with pasta or beans to make a shaker. Or use them as bowling pins, to knock down with a ball.

8. Pots and pans and wooden spoon – teach your toddler about rhythm by banging on the pots. 9. Laundry basket – use to throw rolled-up socks or have them use their imagination to sit inside and drive a car or steer a boat. 10. Everyone’s favorite: old blankets, sheets and towels – use to build an indoor or outdoor fort. To encourage imaginative play at home, parents and caregivers only have to look around the house to keep little ones entertained. About First Things First – First Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early learning, family support and children preventive health services to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org.

First Things First reminds parents that children explore and make sense of the world around them through play. Playing with ordinary household items allows a young child to explore their world and encourages imagination and problem-solving.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum announces the annual Fall Foliage Festival on Thanksgiving weekend Saturday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate Thanksgiving with plentiful fall color, striking desert vistas, and two days of music, food, and arts vendors outdoors beneath the colorful canopy of Chinese Pistachio trees. Enjoy pizza or pisole and browse Native American jewelry, nature crafts, and pottery for sale. The Fall Foliage Festival features live music by Scott Schaefer, Saggio, and Superior local Steven Holmquist. With his Indigenous wood flutes and didgeridoo, World Music instrumentalist Scott Schaefer will take you on an enchanting multidimensional musical journey. Joining him on Saturday will be special guest Saggio with the singing steel of the handpan. Schaefer returns on Sunday, following a musical performance by Superior local songwriter, singer and guitarist, Steve Holmquist. Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located east of Superior, in the stunning Superstition Mountains. At 343 acres, it is the largest and oldest botanical garden in the state of Arizona, and features 18,900 desert plants from around the world. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. Dogs are welcome. Visit www.btarboretum.org for more information.
