I don’t know how many of you are aware of the desperate situation the San Manuel Senior Center is in. At one time we had 75 paid members. Last year we had only 15, and nine of those were board members or spouses. We have lost so many members. Some have gone to be with the Lord, some have gone to retirement homes, some to live with their children. The rest of us are not in the best of health. We would love to have new members. Come on, guys, it’s only $15 per year. The LDS Relief Society stepped up to give us a hand with donation for a yard and bake sale. They also donated a king-sized, handmade quilt which we are selling tickets for to be raffled off before Christmas. Thank you so much LDS Relief Society! We made $397.30 at the yard and bake sale, despite the weather not being so great. I want to give a very special thank you to Sharon Mathews who organized the sale and worked tirelessly. Also a special thanks to Chuck and Jan Kincaid, Sister Davis, Joan Loy, Genevieve Swandt, Jeanie Woods and all of you who helped./s/ Maxine Gillespie, San Manuel Senior Center

By Jennifer R. Carnes Bribery. That’s such an ugly word. Especially when parents have to use it to get their kids to do well in school when we know they are capable of so much more! Parents have been bribing their kids for years. My mom used to bribe us to get good grades. One dollar for every A we brought home on our report card. Oh, she called it a “reward” (not just regular quotes – oh, no imagine

using great big honking air quotes around reward). I’d come home with a report card full of A’s and collect my “reward.” My sister (who really was capable of so much more) brought home the occasional A and the rest B’s and C’s. My mom would pull out the old standby scold: “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” She was, at least, equal in her scolding. She’d ask me the same question, “Why can’t you be more

Letter to the Editor: Calling all seniors

Life lessons are sometimes messy …normal like your sister?” Crazy system, I know, but for her it worked. I always told myself that I would never have to bribe my children to do well in school. Being my child, he or she would love school and get all his or her homework done without

needing to be prodded. Then I met Lauren. Oh, she was so innocent in those first couple of years, progressing normally from infancy to toddlerhood and then into preschool. But when kindergarten rolled around, my daughter morphed into a creature I

just had no idea could come from my genes. “I can’t do it!” she’d wail, when the teacher asked her to do the simplest thing. In Laurenspeak, “I can’t do it!” meant “I don’t WANT to do it!” This lead to our first offense of bribery as

parents. We worked out a system where if the teacher felt Lauren cooperated, she’d get a sticker. We supplied the stickers, but the teacher was complicit in the offense. Those stickers lead to other “rewards” for good

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce has issued a sex offender notifi cation for the Dudleyville area. Raymond Celaya Quiroz, 59, who resides in the 77900 block of E. San Pedro Rd., Dudleyville, has been classifi ed as a level two sex offender. He is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 160 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. He was convicted in 1997 of attempted sexual assault. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce is releasing the above

PCSO issues sex off ender notifi cation for Dudleyville

information pursuant to A.R.S. 13-3825, the Community Notifi cation on Sex Offender Law. The offender in this publication is living in Dudleyville, Arizona. Notifi cation must be made when certain sex offenders are released from the Arizona State Prison, accepted under an interstate compact or released from the county jail back into the community. Offenders are categorized into three levels: Level One (low risk to the community), Level Two (intermediate risk to the community), and Level Three (high risk to the community). The individual who appears on this notifi cation has been convicted of a sex offense, which allows for community notifi cation. He is not wanted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce at this time. This notifi cation is not

intended to increase fear; rather it is our belief that an informed community is a safer community. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. Unless court ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever he chooses. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass sex offenders will not be tolerated. Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but because of Megan’s Law, law enforcement is now able to share this information with you. Police caution that any use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass or create an act against another person will result in prosecution.

By John Hernandez At a news conference held Wednesday Nov. 14, 2012, at the Arizona Department of Public Safety Southern Arizona Headquarters, DPS released more information about the stolen copper from ASARCO. Public Information Officer Bart Graves and DPS Director Robert Halliday spoke and answered questions along with some of the officers involved in the investigation. As the result of further

investigation regarding the copper theft from ASARCO in Hayden, Arizona 359 stolen copper ingots (anodes) were recovered. The investigation conducted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigation Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport allowed CBP officials to retrieve six containers with suspected stolen copper valued at $1.25 million.

DPS seizes over $1,000,000 of stolen ASARCO copper headed for China CBP were able to halt three of the containers at the seaport a day before their scheduled departure. Three other containers had already departed the port for China but were halted and ordered to return. DPS provided information including pictures, blueprints, detailed description and mineral content of the ingots, which allowed CBP to identify the three containers scheduled to be shipped to Hong Kong. The three containers at sea were identified and ordered to return to the Los Angeles seaport for inspection. All of the containers had a Shipper’s Export Declaration listing the commodity as “Metal Scrap (Copper Alloy Waste and Scrap)” from the same exporter. The identity of the exporter and recipient of the shipments could not be released due to the ongoing investigation. The copper ingots each measure four feet in width, four feet in height, and two inches in thickness

and weigh approximately 880 pounds. Each ingot is valued at $3,488. The ingots are unrefined copper with traces of gold and silver. They should not be considered scrap metal and should not be in the scrap metal market. DPS hopes that this sends a message to metal dealers around the state as well as copper thieves. The uncovering of what appears to be a sophisticated black market operation started on Oct. 27, 2012 when the Arizona Department of Public Safety Southern Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit conducted a criminal investigation regarding a copper theft at ASARCO

in Hayden, Arizona. DPS initiated a commercial vehicle stop on Interstate 10 near milepost 200. In the trailer of the commercial vehicle, 49 copper ingots were discovered and seized. Information obtained from the traffic stop led to a search warrant that was executed at a residence located at 6320 W. Tangerine Road in Marana, Arizona. During the search of the property, 56 copper ingots were discovered. Three truck tractors, three semi-trailers, one heavy-duty commercial forklift and two handcarts were seized as evidence. The stolen copper was valued at $300,000.

Between the original seizures and the copper acquired at the seaport, over $1.5 million of stolen copper has been seized. Due to the ongoing investigation the number of people arrested, suspects and other pertinent information could not be divulged. A total of 240 stolen ingots remains unaccounted for and may have already entered the Chinese market. Video from the event can be viewed online at http://tinyurl.com/bl8v9q3.

The funds help to operate the organization and provide economic development support to the 11 mining communities in the Copper Corridor. Rios thanked the group for their dedication to their region and said they were always impressed with what the group accomplishes. By Janice Rapp The members of the San Manuel Historical Society want to thank the citizens of San Manuel for their support of our Thrift store down by the Credit Union. Due to your generous donations we have been able to reach out to organizations that support the people and animals in the Tri Community. For some reason, these donations have dried up in the last month. It is our desire to give generous donations to the various organizations that will be giving out food boxes to the needy, this we cannot do without your ongoing support. We especially need large pieces. If you have something you would like to donate and no way of getting it down here, call Janice at 385-4593 after 2 p.m. and an attempt will be made to find transportation for it. We will also be sponsoring the Tri Community Toy Drive. You can find donation boxes at Dollar General, Main St. San Manuel, San Manuel Thrift Store and the Elks Lodge. All donations will be turned over to the Tri Community Food Bank for distribution.

grades. I’m ashamed to admit that this year, I hit an all time low in my battle against bribery. Lauren is taking freshmen English this year. She was doing ok in the subject (or so we thought) until one day we received a nasty surprise from the school – it wasn’t pretty. How can your grade be so bad, Lauren? we wailed at her. How was this possible? She’s the daughter of the NEWSPAPER EDITOR and the granddaughter of the former NEWSPAPER EDITOR and the great-granddaughter of the former NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER! She should have writing in her blood. Her response (which, yes, I will tell you resulted in much gnashing of teeth) was, “Mom, I’m just apathetic.” APATHETIC? Seriously?

I asked her if she knew what apathetic meant and yes, she knew that it meant she didn’t care. And thus began the next slide down that slippery slope of bribery. She had an essay to write. Out came the bribes. Get an A on this essay and I’ll use your favorite word somewhere in the paper. Never going to happen, I thought, especially considering the not so great grade she earned on the rough draft. Guess again, Mom. She wrote and rewrote the essay. When the fi nal grade came back from her teacher, it was a 91%. Yep, it was an A. So I have to use her favorite word in the paper. Here it is – EPIC. There. I used it. Oh, by the way, I didn’t tell you the subject of the essay in question. Why parents make bad teachers. We’re so screwed.

to know some basic tools to prevent yourself or a friend from being victimized. Never leave anything of value inside your vehicles: Your vehicle is a mobile device and you should always consider that no location is a safe location for it. Be aware of carports, garage doors and open areas as potentials. Leaving garage doors open, hiding keys outside to the residence, leaving gates unlocked, lack of security devices, and unsecure windows are just invitations to criminals who count on these poor habits to victimize the resident. Supply proper lighting to darkened areas of your property criminals do not

like exposure. Having proper and strategically placed lighting will not only illuminate dark hiding spots but allow you to survey your property surroundings safely. Report any and all suspicious activity a vast majority of criminal acts including serious crimes go unreported due to either complacency or lack of education as to what is potentially going on. Rather than investigating the suspicious behavior yourself, call 911. Get involved in your neighborhood there are many programs that you and your family can get involved with as well as getting to know your neighbors. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce provides

many volunteer services and programs that can assist in starting a Block Watch, Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods (GAIN), Neighborhood Watch, POSSE, Explorers, Safety and Crime Prevention Fairs, Victim Services and Citizens on Patrol (COP). Sheriff Babeu stated,

“The majority of the crimes investigated by our offi ce are reported by the citizens we serve. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity and criminal activity as soon as it occurs. Working together we can all make Pinal County a safer place for our families.”

The MESS kindergarten through third grade classes went to a Veteran’s Day ceremony on December 9th at our gym. Mr. Danny Madrigal came to our school to talk to us. He is a veteran and taught us about being a patriot and about the fl ag. The fl ag stands for our country and we can’t let it touch the ground because that is disrespectful. If the fl ag is upside down, it means that there is something bad happening. He taught us how to fold the fl ag and Mrs. Messing read about what each fold of the fl ag means. He also told us that the biggest war was World War II and he said that we fi ght in wars to protect our country and to help our friends. Written by Mrs. Formo’s Kindergarten Class

MESS students learn more about Veterans Day

By Mackenzie Yubeta, Mason Stewart and Ethan Kellam The fi rst grade class grows green dandelions for our pets. We had a pot of dandelions that we transplanted by moving them into the garden. The plants grew

fast and the leaves are green when they’re ripe. We harvest the biggest leaves of the plant. We cut them from the bottom part of the plant. Coco eats green dandelions from the garden. He is our 4

year old brown male guinea pig. He eats a lot and he’s silly when he chews the green plants. Coco is cute when he lies down and his soft fur shakes. We have two small tortoises. They eat dandelions too, but they are slow.

By Room 34 2nd and 3rd GradersLast time, we told you about our guest science teacher, a man named Mr. Steve who volunteers to help our class learn more about science. Mr. Steve helped us set up an experiment. We wondered what would happen to the granite rocks if we put one in hot water and one in cold water. We made some predictions about what we thought would happen. Some of us said that the rocks would break down. Some of us said that the rocks would disappear. And some of us said that the water would evaporate and the rocks would stay there. After the week was over, nothing had happened, except that some of the water evaporated. The granite stayed the same; it did not change or dissolve. We think the granite did not change because it can not be effected by water. Mr. Steve

taught us that granite has been around for a very long time, so that must mean it is a strong rock. But our granite rocks did not go to waste. Instead, we used the rocks to grow crystals to see how they form. Here are some of our observations:· The blue crystals on the plate look like frozen

trees if you look really close.· Our crystal turned purple instead of blue.· Our crystals have two crystals. I am happy!· The rock has absorbed water to grow the crystals.· The crystals grew on the plate and the rocks.· Our crystals at the top of the rock look like an

erupting volcano.· Our crystal is yellow and crispy. We would like to thank Mr. Steve for helping us with our experiments and our readers for reading about our learning.
