Dear Editor, I have been meaning to share this with you for a while now. Approximately 3 weeks ago, on a Wednesday, I had the opportunity to substitute for Janice Vigil. Janice has a class of 25 kindergarten students. On this day 23 of them were in attendance. The morning began with a trip to Mountain Vista for a video presentation regarding character, which focused on self-control and good decision-making. Janice had taken care of lunch count and other early morning activities prior to leaving at 8:30 for her

training workshop. The trip to Mountain Vista went off without a hitch. I considered it a success because there were no diffi culties and I did not lose any students. Upon our return to Oracle Ridge I reviewed the concept of self-control with Janice’s class of kindergartners and spelled out my expectations regarding their behavior for the day. Surprisingly enough this actually worked. The students stayed in their seats and waited for appropriate times to ask questions. If there were any aberrations from the expected a quick reminder

of what self-control was refocused their attention. Janice had left me a very organized list of her schedule and items to accomplish. I admit we did not complete her entire list. This is partly due to the time spent focusing on the character attribute of self-control. We also took brief breaks between her lessons once pretending to be pigs and the next time pretending to be dogs. The students quickly returned from pretending to be animals to their seats ready to continue on with the next assignment. I must say, for a few

minutes prior to heading to lunch I lost some of their attention as we were packing up book bags, Wednesday folders, etc. As the kindergarten teachers do, I stayed with the class during lunch. The students were very mannerly during their lunchtime. For the lion›s share of the day everyone behaved beautifully. I would like to thank the students for behaving so well for their guest teacher. I was thankful when Janice returned. Even though it was a short day I was wiped…I mean tired, beat, exhausted.

What teachers do is amazing. I have always respected the profession, but I had forgotten what it was like. I started my teaching career with fifth-grade students and over the course of my teaching I also taught third grade. Way back in the beginning my student teaching consisted of a semester with kindergartners and a semester with first graders. It was very good for me to return to the classroom. It reminded me of just how difficult and how

important a teacher’s role is. It also reminded me of the importance of good substitute teaching professionals. So it is with a sincere and heartfelt thanks that I commend the teachers of our district (and all teachers) for the wonderful things they do for their students. Keep up the excellent work.Respectfully,/s/Todd KissickSuperintendent, Principal & Preschool/Childcare DirectorOracle Elementary School District #2office: 520-896-3074

Dear Editor, Last week, a national report revealed some troubling news about education in Arizona. According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, Arizona has reduced per-pupil funding to K-12 schools by 22 percent. As a result, Arizona ranks number one

in making the deepest cuts to education in the entire nation. This is no surprise to parents and teachers. Politicians at the State Capitol have consistently cut funding for our children and their votes have put Arizona at the bottom in education. This not how we value our

Letter to the Editor: Arizona ranks number one in cuts to education students and this is not how we attract quality jobs to Arizona. As a father of three children, education was important in my household. As a Legislator, it was a priority in the State House. That’s why I helped passed all-day Kindergarten and voted

to invest in our state universities for research. Four years later, the Republican-controlled legislature eliminated all-day Kindergarten, raised state tuition and gave tax breaks to billion dollar companies. We cannot stand by and let Arizona’s children

be short-changed by shortsighted leaders. Despite these numbers, I am optimistic about Arizona’s future. In order to re-build our economy, we must invest in education. We need to educate our future nurses, teachers, and engineers. Expand

community colleges to re-train workers. I want to see the label, “MADE IN ARIZONA” again. Arizona has ranked last for too long.Sincerely,/s/Ernest BustamanteFormer Arizona State RepresentativeMammoth, AZ

By Chase KampCopper Area News As the primary season concludes, the County general election races are slowly setting in for November. At press time, election officials released unofficial tallies but were still counting provisional and mail-in ballots. One race in particular hinges on these additional votes. In the District 2 Republican Supervisor race, Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith led Nancy

Discher by only 43 votes, with Fred Mackenzie a close third. Discher showed a slim lead after an initial round of results was posted on the County elections website, but Smith overtook her in the latest numbers. The Republican winner will face unchallenged Democrat Henry Wade. District 4 consists of SaddleBrooke, Arizona City and Maricopa. In the race for Sheriff,

November general election contest previewincumbent Paul Babeu clinched the Republican nod over challengers Tom Bearup, Jack McClaren and Derek Arnson. He will face Democratic challenger Kevin Taylor, a Maricopa resident and owner of a private security firm, and independent candidate Ty Morgan, a career lawman and PCSO Sergeant. Former Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick defeated challenger Wenona Baldenegro Benally for the Democratic nomination in Congressional District 1 and will face Republican challenger Jonathan Paton, a former state lawmaker. Kirkpatrick held the old CD-1 seat before she was defeated by Paul Gosar in 2010. CD-1 consists of rural central and eastern Pinal, as well as northern

Arizona cities like Show Low and Flagstaff. Gosar won his primary in the new CD-4 and will face. The district contains northern Pinal cities like Apache Junction and San Tan Valley. In LD-8, Democrats Ernest Bustamante and Emily Verdugo will face off against the Republican incumbent Frank Pratt as well as Republican candidate Thomas T.J. Shope. There are two seats open. Editorial note: In last week’s Copper Area publications, we reported in error that only Bustamante and Pratt would go into the General Election. We regret the error. Pratt is currently the Representative for LD-23 but is running in newly drawn LD-8, which consists of area of Coolidge, Kearny and

Mammoth. Bustamante served in the state legislature for two years beginning in 2003. Verdugo and Shope are both new to the state legislature. The County Board of Supervisors was expanded to include five total seats from the previous three. State law dictated Pinal County to expand to five Supervisors if the populated reached above 200,000. Census results in 2010 showed an estimated County population of 375,000. In District 1, Democratic incumbent and former state legislator Pete Rios will face Republican Gem Cox and independent candidate Alicia Bristow. Current District 3 Supervisor David Snider, a Democrat, will face Republican Stephen Miller and independent

Roberto Almaguer. The District 2 Republican primary saw former PCSO Director Cheryl Chase beating out four challengers for a spot on the ticket. Chase will face Democratic write-in candidate Margo Feldmiller. “Feldmiller will be on the November ballot as the Democratic Party nominee for the District #2 Board of Supervisor’s race,” said Elections Director Steve Kizer. In the northern Pinal District 5, which is made of areas of Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, Republican Todd House will face unchallenged Democrat Maxine Brown. For County Assessor, Republican Douglas Wolf will face unchallenged Democrat Randy Robbins.

FLORENCE, AZ – Pinal County Air Quality will resume issuing open burning permits in portions of Pinal County on Sept.17, 2012. The ban

originally went into effect in late April to mitigate the risk of wildfire. Recent rains and higher humidity levels have reduced the fire risk in many

County to allow open burning in areas with reduced wildfire risk; ban still in effect for Oracle, Dudleyville

areas. The ban on open burning will remain in effect where local fire departments still regard open fires as a threat, including the Oracle and Dudleyville Fire Districts. State law prohibits open burning in the portion of north central Pinal County that in-cludes Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gold Canyon and San Tan Valley. This region, re-ferred to as Area A, is affected by more stringent air quality regulations that prohibit open burning until Oct.1. On Sept. 17, 2012 Pinal County Air Quality will also resume holding satellite of-fice hours at the Casa Grande County Complex located at 820 E. Cottonwood Lane, Building A, each Mon. and Wed. from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For additional information on open burning or for an applica-tion for a burn permit, see the Air Quality Division’s website at PinalCountyAZ.gov or call the Pinal County Air Quality Division at 520-866-6929.

By John Hernandez On Aug. 6, 1945 the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later on Aug. 9, 1945 a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. Over 240,000 Japanese mostly civilians died as a result of those two bombs. On Aug.15, 1945 the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito announced that Japan would accept the stipulations in the Potsdam agreement and surrender unconditionally. Although Aug. 15 is celebrated in other parts of the world as the end of the War in the Pacific, in the United States it is remembered on another day. Sept.2 was Victory over Japan Day also known as Victory in the Pacific Day and VJ Day. VJ Day marks the formal surrender of the Japanese in World War II. A formal ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay, Japan on Sept. 2, 1945

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners football team headed down to Tombstone for a shoot-out with the Yellow Jackets, the Miners went into the game posting a 2 – 0 record while the Yellow Jackets posted a 1- 1 record including a 51 – 20 win over Bisbee, the Miners knew they in were in for a tough fight - taking the loss 28 - 18. The Miners had the opening game possession and punted the ball after a three and out. Tombstone would take their opening possession in for a score with William Braswell scoring on a five yard touch-down run into the end zone on the ninth play of the drive, the two point conversion was no good for a 6 – 0 lead at the 7:00 mark of the first quarter. The Miners were forced to punt again on their next pos-session after five plays. The Yellow Jackets would begin their drive at their own 49 yard line cashing in on a one yard touchdown run eight plays later with Bryant James converting on the two point conversion to add to the lead 14 – 0 with 4:02 left in the first quarter. Tombstone drove 51 yards in eight plays taking 1:28 on the drive. In the second quarter, the Miners would punt the ball away, giving Tombstone the ball at their own 33 yard line. The Miners would get the ball back putting together a nine play drive down to the Tombstone 13 yard line where Tristian Woodard stepped in on the Miners pass for the interception. The Yellow Jackets would score again on their opening drive of the third quarter, this time on a 60 yard blast up the middle for the touchdown with the two point conversion good for a 14 – 0 lead with 10:57 in the third quarter.

Miner swimmers hosted a four-way meet with Immaculate Heart High School, Pusch Ridge and St. Augustine in San Manuel. As the meet got underway, it looked like it would be a close battle between San Manuel and Pusch Ridge. Both the boys and girls medley relays were close, but Pusch Ridge was able to win both. As the boys meet unfolded, it became evident that the real battle would be for second place. After the 200 Free Relay, the Miners were in last place with only three events left. Then Senior Andy Monfred finished second in the 100 Backstroke, Senior Wayne Newman won the 100 Breaststroke and the 400 Free Relay (Newman, Monfred, Alec Newman, John Bribiescas) went on to finish second giving the team the necessary points to finish the meet in second place. Final scores for the meet, Pusch Ridge 173, San Manuel 69, St. Augustine 63 and Immaculate Heart 53. The girl’s meet continued just like it started, there was close race after close race each one resulting in a Pusch Ridge win. The 100 Breaststroke was different; Junior Cierra Austin took the lead early and won by a large margin setting a new school record. Final

By Tom Di CamilloEASTERN PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – The punch list has been punched. The touch-up paint has dried. The installed glass has been shined with shiny glass

cleaner. And the new front door of Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus will swing wide open on Tuesday, Sept. 18, for a grand re-opening celebration that the entire

community is invited to attend. This family event will run from 5-7 p.m. and is free. Guests will take a celebratory excursion through the new-look campus which has moved

its front door from across the parking lot to the majestic green corridor dotted with giant shade trees and canvassed by a mountain backdrop. The ore cart with its tumbled rock scattered to the side of the steel rail segment touts the history of the area and the growth that the Aravaipa Campus represents. In 2008, the voters of Pinal County approved a nearly-$99 million bond to expand educational opportunities throughout Pinal County. Fruition to Eastern Pinal County comes in the form of the Aravaipa Campus expansion. Food, music and tours of the campus will take place throughout the evening; however, that is just the beginning. The evening begins promptly at 5 p.m. when Katy Wilkins and STARLAB make a heavenly appearance in the Aravaipa Campus gymnasium. An inflatable indoor planetarium that provides a detailed view of the nighttime sky, STARLAB can accommodate groups of 20-25 adults and children at a time. Wilkins will offer her ongoing presentations throughout the evening. “My public presentations usually consist of some short stories and how to locate constellations and some other interesting facts,” she said.

The inflatable planetarium was purchased when Central Arizona College’s SEMAA (Science Engineering Mathematics Aerospace Academy) program was being offered at CAC. Wildman Phil Rakoci will display his critters from 5-7 p.m. on the open-air stage at the cafeteria with a special 30-minute presentation taking place from 6-6:30 p.m. Known for his blend of humor and nature, Rakoci’s iconic programs are filled with fun and facts as he expertly combines hands-on demonstrations with lessons featuring:• Respect for wildlife and the environment• Animal defenses and their roles• Ways to identify dangerous creatures and harmless animals• Separation of fact and fiction in the world of spiders, scorpions, lizards, snakes, and other such creatures• Life cycles and the web of life. Check out Rakoci’s website at http://www.desertwildlife.net/. Locally iconic science professor Dr. Beth Krueger will present Birds of the Sonoran Desert in B111 at 5:15 p.m. with an encore presentation at 6:30 p.m. Field Research by CAC Science Students will unveil their findings at 5:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. also in B111. Krueger partners with the

Nature Conservancy to provide her students real experience in the field. Also from 6-6:30 p.m., CAC will host its Phi Theta Kappa Induction in E115. PTK is the national honor society for two-year college students. Classrooms and a variety of facilities will be teaming with activity from 5-7 p.m., including the technology building which will offer woodworking demonstrations by the class in session that evening. Members of the Street Rods class will display their vehicles outside the technology building for visitors to view. The new library will be open for tours and information as the staff explains the exciting new partnerships taking place with the public libraries in Pinal County. Student Services staff members will be available in B113 to help anyone interested in attending CAC, while those interested in GED and ESL programs will be able to meet with staff members about upcoming classes. Information on Early Start, First Step, Promise for the Future and College for Kids also will be available. The CAC Students Leadership will serve as ambassadors as they guide visitors to the various activities throughout the evening. While an RSVP or preregistration is not required, CAC would appreciate those who are considering attending to please visit www.avcgrand.eventbrite.com and register. For more information, please contact Stella Garcia at 520-494-5204/[email protected]. In the coming weeks, CAC will be releasing stories on the history of the Aravaipa Campus.
