Give 50 for the 50th Club

For 50 years, St. Basil's Chapel and The Catholic Center has welcomed all students to come and find a comfortable place to meet,

eat, talk, pray, retreat, plan, study and grow. On November 15, 2015, we celebrate our 50th Anniversary.

To commemorate this anniversary, St. Basil's wants to ensure that over the next 50 years The Catholic Center can offer all students

retreats that combine spiritual growth with an opportunity to do charitable work.

Your $50 membership gift to the Give 50 for the 50th Anniversary Club will go entirely to establish a perpetual fund for annual

retreats. The principal of this fund will remain intact; the annual earnings from the invested fund will help defray the cost of

spiritual and charitable service retreats into the future. We are aiming for 1000 members.

$50 checks are payable to St. Basil, Give 50 to the 50th Club. Or join the Give 50 for the 50th Club on line at the St Thomas

Aquinas parish website. If you are interested in making a larger contribution, please contact Leo Cote at 508-697-6072.

Members of the Give 50 to the 50th Club will receive a membership pin and their names will be inscribed on an artistic plaque for

permanent display at The Catholic Center.

Reaching Out to Our Youth

Over the last few months a group of parishioners have been meeting to discuss expanding our outreach to the youth of

our parish. They are working to come up with something that will help our young people to become more engaged in

the parish, to build community, deepen their faith, serve others, and have fun doing it. For their first event they are

working on a trip to Fright Fest at Six Flags on October 24th. After that they hope to have different events, service

opportunities, and chances to pray. If you would like to assist this group with their planning, or help at any of the

events, please contact Pauline Lysko at [email protected]. Please also keep the group, and our young people, in

your prayers.

In Christ,

Fr. Adrian

It’s hard to believe that the summer is slowly or should I say, quickly coming to an end. We welcome back those

who’ve been on vacation. You’ve been missed and it’s great to see many returning to Mass.

Our parish staff has been working throughout the summer not only on our different ministries but preparing our facili-

ties to accommodate the high use they receive every day.

Our very successful annual Volunteer Sign-Up Weekends will be held dur ing September 19/20 and 26/27th. Every

year we encourage parishioners to volunteer their time and talent to become more involved in the parish by volunteer-

ing in one or more of our ministries. We especially encourage those who are new to the parish or have begun

worshipping here to volunteer for a ministry. It’s a great way to meet other parishioners, establish new friendships and

strengthen our bond with each other.

During these weekends you will be able to volunteer at one of the tables which will be set up after the Masses.

Members of the different ministries will be there to answer questions and encourage your participation. A list of minis-

tries will be published in the upcoming bulletins. Please take time these next few weeks to appreciate the talents the

Lord has given you and your willingness to use them for the greater community.

Our parish could not grow and be as dynamic as it is without the commitment of our volunteers. Most people are

unaware of how many ministries and therefore opportunities in our parish. Some are hesitant to volunteer because

they’re unsure of themselves, their time, their abilities or trying something new. You’ll never know if you don’t

try….if it doesn’t work out you can try a different ministry. I would like everyone reading this bulletin to volunteer for

something. We have a lot of volunteers but could use more and are open to any new ideas or ministries that would

benefit our parish and community. Your parish NEEDS you!

As much as I hate to see the summer end, I’m excited about all the possibilities that are ahead.

Fr. Bill

SAVE THE DATES Catechist/Teacher Meetings

Training for Confirmation I & II (9 & 10) will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. We will be reviewing how to use the Chosen curriculum using the TVs, the Blu-ray players, and the leader guides.

Grades 6-8—Colleen Donohoe from the Archdi-ocese of Boston will be training us in the Cre-ated for Love program for Tuesday, September 15, 6:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m. Created for Love is a man-dated Middle School Religion Curriculum de-signed by the Respect Life Education Office to be integrated into the existing religion curricula in Grades 6, 7, & 8 in every parish and Catholic school throughout the Archdiocese of Boston — designed to be taught over a three year period. The curriculum consists of a text and a DVD to be used in conjunction with one another and to be taught carefully and slowly over a three year peri-od so as to grow with the maturity of the middle school student. The Respect Life Education Of-fice offers ongoing training to pastors, principals, parish faith formation leaders and religion teach-ers/catechists in order to implement the Created for Love curriculum and share the beauty of God’s Plan for Life, Love, Relationships & Marriage. To view clips of this program visit: http://www.bostoncatholic.org/Offices-And-Services/Office-Detail.aspx?id=31129&pid=13944

Grades 1-5, training will be held on Wednes-day, September 16th, 6:00 p.m.

These training sessions are important for catechists to get off to a great start. We hope you make every effort to attend.

TV Project Update

You may remember that toward the beginning of summer I asked for your help with an upgrade to our classrooms as we decided to add TVs for a new Confirmation program called Chosen, and to be able to do a lot of new things for all our different programs in the parish. A number of people responded extremely generously. Money dona-tions have reached $12,540 at the moment of writing, out of a total expense of $14,951.55, a cost that was greatly reduced because a lot of labor to make the classrooms ready for the new equipment was donated by Proffetty Electrical Company. I want to, once again, thank all those who have donated for making this possible. I know that the opportunities that this new equip-ment provides will give many new opportunities to our Religious Education program as well as many other parish groups and events. If anybody else would be interested in making a donation to help cover some of the remaining difference between the cost of the project and the money we received for it, the donation can either be made online on our website or by check made out to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, with “classroom upgrade” listed in the note line.

In Christ,

Fr. Adrian

Catechetical Certificate Programs

The Archdiocese of Boston offers two certificate programs, a Catechetical Certificate and a Catholicism Certificate. Both programs provide students with the formation they need to enter more deeply into the truth of Christ. The Catechetical Certificate prepares one to be a better teacher of the faith. The Catholicism Certificate gives one the opportunity to more deeply study the truths of the Catholic faith. Both certificates meet at the same location and at the same time.

Who should pursue a foundational certificate?

Parents Catechists Parish council members Parish finance council members Parish volunteers and employees Teachers Homeschoolers Anyone who wants to learn more about the Catholic faith!

The Catholic faith is inexhaustibly rich! God the Father sends His Son Jesus Christ into the suffering world to give life – without limit. The path to true happiness is knowing Jesus more deeply. The Father wants every-one to have this joy. He wants to empower the faithful to share Christian joy with others. If you would like to explore the possibilities of enriching your faith life, visit www.sjs.edu.

50th Anniversary Celebration

Excitement is building to celebrate the 50th

Anniversary of The Catholic Center and St. Basil's Chapel. We thank all who designed and made squares for the 50-Square Commemorative Quilt. It will be unveiled on November 15th at a special 3:30 p.m. St. Basil Mass. St. Basil's former chaplains will concele-brate, accompanied by a host of current and former music ministers.

Highlights of the Center's historic founding and 50-year history will be on display. Mark your

calendar for the 50th

anniversary dinner also on

November 15th. All who wish to help with this and more are welcome to the next planning meeting, September 15th, 7:00PM at The Catholic Center.

The Processions, held on the 13th of the month from May through October, are in honor of Our Lady of Fatima.

The service includes inspirational music, a Candlelight Rosary Procession led by a beautiful statue of Our Lady

of Fatima, and Benediction. All are welcome to come—to pray for Peace in our troubled world at war and for

our service men and women in the Armed Forces, and for their own personal intentions. We especially urge

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

On a trip to New York City, our group ended up sitting at an

outdoor café, watching people walk by. One person made the

observation that every person walking by us had a story to

tell, a place to go and things to do. It reminded me of a movie

that examined the many ways in which the lives of strangers

are intertwined and overlap. We are closer than we imagine.

The woman walking by is the granddaughter of your great

aunt’s best friend. The young boy on the bike who almost

knocked you over goes to your parish, but only when he visits

his grandfather, who ushers at the 7:00 Mass on Sunday

morning. We are connected in so many ways.

Faith makes those types of connections. We share the same

beliefs, receive the same sacraments and struggle with the

same sins, yet we live miles apart. We’ve prayed together,

hoped together, and worshipped together. To be a Catholic is

to be part of the universal Church, the Body of Christ. In Him

we are more than just connected by coincidence. We are the

children of God, united as one.
