February 14, 2016 — First Sunday of Lent

Dt 26: 4-10; Ps 91: 1-2, 10-15; Rom 10: 8-13; Lk 4:1-13

Literally speaking, “Deuteronomy,” as in the Book of Deuteronomy, means “Second

Law.” This Old Testament Book from which our First Reading is drawn actually

consists of three sermons delivered to the Israelites by Moses. Interestingly, in

German, this book is called just Mose, drawing the name from the opening line of the

Book which states, quite simply, “These are the words of Moses.”

In today’s reading Moses speaks not just to the Israelites, but to us as well, as is

always the case with Holy Scripture. Moses makes reference to giving of one’s first fruits.

Specifically he says, “Therefore, I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil

which you, O Lord, have given me, and having set them before the Lord, your God, you shall bow

down in his presence.”

Giving of first fruits is a way to acknowledge and honor God because it provides the Lord with His

portion first, before any is used for one’s self. That, of course, is an important aspect of

stewardship, as challenging as that may be. Moses points out that it is more than giving first fruits,

however. He recognizes that all comes from God, and we are called to return this first portion in

thanksgiving for God’s grace and love and blessings.

Moses would also remind us that giving must come from the heart, with a true attitude of gratitude.

It is part of the way we worship the Lord by being stewards of His gifts.

St. Juliana of Nicomedia

Feast Day: February 16

The veneration of the virgin martyr Juliana, a

maiden of Nicomedia (Izmit, Turkey), is very

ancient in the east and the west. A Christian convert, Juliana refused to marry a pagan,

thereby incurring the wrath of her pagan

father and a pagan suitor. She was thereupon

imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded. While in

prison, she is said to have been subjected to a

vision of a demon, pretending to be an angel of light, urging her to sacrifice to the pagan

gods. Recognizing the deception, Juliana

cried out, "Lord God of heaven and earth, do

not desert me, nor permit your handmaid to

perish." She vanquished the tempter, who

admitted to her that the devils particularly suffer when Christians attend Mass.

Bulletin Bloopers The church was badly in need of a coat of paint. So the pastor decided he'd do the job himself. But all he had was one bucket of paint. So he got a bunch of buckets and some water, and he thinned the paint enough to cover the entire church. Then he spent all day painting. That night it rained—very hard—and washed all the paint off. The pastor was quite discouraged and asked God, 'Why...why God, did you let it rain and wash off all my hard work?' To which God thundered his reply, 'Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!'

General Information

St. Mary Grief Committee

St. Mary Church is in need of volunteers to start a grief committee. The committee would help with funeral luncheons when requested by the bereaved family. No cooking would be involved, we would set up and clean up after the meals, which would be catered. In this Year of Mercy burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy and this ministry

would support that mission. Please prayerfully consider donating some of your time to this very worthwhile cause.

Services Offered by the Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary at St. Mary Church is beginning to offer some new services to the Parish Family of St. Mary & St. Thomas Aquinas. One of the services is to come to a funeral home to say the rosary. When meeting with the church representative, the family can request that the rosary be said during the wake and the contact person at the church will contact a member of the Legion of Mary to provide this service. There is no charge for this.

A homebound visitation ministry is being established for both parishes. If you know of a homebound person who would enjoy a visit, please notify the parish office and we will contact a member of the Legion of Mary or call (860) 881-5793 and speak with John Tyszka.

The Legion of Mary is providing these services in this Year of Mercy to be a witness of God’s mercy here on earth and of the love that His mother Mary offers to all her children.

St. Thomas Haiti Committee We are reconstructing the St. Thomas’ Haiti Committee. Our present ministry supports a portion of the cost of teacher’s salaries, educational materials, and food for more than 200 girls in primary school in Haiti. We are looking for people moved by the Spirit to help God’s people in Haiti. The committee roles of secretary, treasurer, fundraiser chairperson, and sponsorship chairperson must be filled in order to form the new committee. Interested candidates should contact Ray Fricano, Chairperson, at [email protected]. More donors are needed to support this ministry in 2016. The suggested annual sponsorship will remain at $180.00 a year, payable in lump sum, monthly, or quarterly payments. Any amount in support of this ministry is a blessing to the people of Haiti, and is greatly appreciated. Please consider supporting our needy brothers and sisters in Christ. For more information, contact Ray Fricano.

Suggested Donations for St. Mary Church

We have been asked by various parishioners about contributions that they can make for needs of the parish. Most of these are needs and some are “wishes,” but if you are interested in donating any of these items that we are in need of it would be greatly appreciated.

• Dish washer for St. Mary Rectory ~$400

• Industrial strength vacuum cleaner ~$500
