The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 Wicked people discuss their anger at the just one, because they do not like being reproached for their evil ways. They want to see if he is the Son of God, so they decide to torture him and see if God will come to defend him. They decide to condemn him to a shameful death and see if the claims are true that God will take care of him.

Second Reading: James 3:16—4:3 James discusses the importance of avoiding jealousy and strife. People should strive for peace and justice instead of concentrating on material pleasures which can tempt people to sin to obtain whatever they desire.

Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 Jesus again attempts to prepare his disciples for his death and resurrection, although they do not yet fully understand. They had been arguing over who was the most important one, but Jesus tells them whoever wants to rank first must be willing to remain a servant to all. He also tells them that anyone who welcomes a child in his name welcomes both him and God.

St. John’s Family Page

Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me. Jesus places before his disciples, a child – who has no special status or possessions of his/her own. We can have social status and possessions, but we should not let them encumber us. The apostles thought status was important. They seem to be selfishly ambitious. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Jesus teaches them that “greatness” aligns with service. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. St. Mark in today’s gospel reminds us that Jesus calls us to service. St. John describes the call to service in Jn13:14: If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. St. Matthew writes in Mt25:35-36: I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you comforted me, in prison and you visited me. St. James speaks of the heart of a servant in today’s second reading – purity, peacefulness, gentleness, full of mercy, compliant with the will of God and sincere. This is the spirit of service. God accepts us where we are, with all our short comings and faults to accomplish his work. We put our faith into action – being open to God’s action in the circumstances and people in our life. Jesus, give us your heart, the heart of a servant! May God bless us always! Deacon Mike

WELCOME BACK: On Wednesday, September 5th, St. John the Apostle School opened its doors to more than 400 students. The children were truly excited and rightly so. They returned to a school with a new look library, the promise of state of the art science lab equipment, and a building that is safer than ever before. It was a busy yet productive summer for our school. In this September edition of school news, we would like to alert you about some of the changes taking place in our school this year. GRANTS: In the winter of 2018, our school received a grant, awarded over a span of three years, from the Department of Homeland Security. The money was used to install security cameras and an alarm system on the outside doors of our school. The safety of our students is our highest priority at St. John’s. We can confidently say our students have never been safer. MERCK: Over the summer, we received a $25,000.00 grant from Merck. The money is earmarked to create an interactive science lab for students in the 4th and 5th grades. DOMINICAN SISTERS OF HOPE: Additionally, we received a $15,000.00 grant from the Dominican Sisters of Hope. The money will be used to purchase additional science supplies as well as supplies and materials for our maker-space program. NEW ADDITIONS: We would like to welcome new faculty members to our St. John the Apostle family. Ms. Jordan Doherty (Middle School Science), Mrs. Anne Marie Kaminski (2nd grade), Ms. Barbara Carvalho (Pre K 4), Ms. Melissa Garris (Pre K 3), Mr. Eligio Cruz, (grades 5-8 Spanish), and Mr. Joseph Mayon (Music) have joined our team of dedicated educators. We know these teachers will be positive contributors to our school community. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: On Thursday night, September 20th, we hosted Back to School Night for parents of students in grades one through five. Immediately following, we had our first Parent Faculty Guild meeting of the year. Attendance was terrific, and parents could not help but be impressed by the great things that are happening in our school. DATES TO REMEMBER: The opening of the school year brings with it a flurry of activity. September and October are loaded with important days. Tuesday evening, September 25th will be Back to School Night for parents of students in grades six through eight. Athletic registration will be held that same night in the auditorium. Thursday and Friday, October 18th and 19th will be parent-teacher conferences. Conferences will be held in both the afternoon and the evening on October 18th but only in the afternoon on the 19th. Sunday, October 28th will be our annual Trunk or Treat celebration in the school parking lot, and of course we will have our Halloween Parade on October 31st. Each new school year is met with genuine excitement and wide eyed anticipation. Our students willingly embrace the quality education that we deliver to them on a daily basis, and we in turn do everything we can to prepare our students for the 21st century challenges that await them after they leave the friendly confines of our school. As we embark on another year of teaching and learning please understand that at St. John the Apostle we remain true to our mission. We strive to provide our students with the finest Catholic School Education in the Archdiocese of Newark, and we continue to meet that goal year after year. May God Bless You, Dr. Deborah Egan
