The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is extolled as a place of glory and splendor because the Lord has come to His own city. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that his special mission is to make the Gentiles co-heirs with the Jews in Christ — “members of the same body and sharers of the promise.” Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Herod learns that Wise Men from the East are searching for the newly born Christ Child. He instructs them to find the Child and to report His whereabouts to him. The Wise Men follow a star to the place where Mary and Jesus are and offer the Child gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They do not return to Herod but follow another route to their own country.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2020

“God’s secret plan, as I have briefly described it, was revealed to me, unknown to men in former ages, but now revealed by the Spirit to the holy apostles and prophets. It is no less than this: in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now coheirs with the Jews, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise through the preaching of the gospel.”

This great day in the life of the church, tells us more than the jealousy of a threatened king, the ardent search of the wise men from the east, and their discovery of the Savior and Mary His Mother. The event has allowed so many rich traditions to develop to enhance our faith. The number of visitors with three gifts for royalty, priesthood and eventual anointing in death, the star directing them like a GPS, and the humility of these rich visitors coming before the infant.

The message to use Paul’s words is ‘no less than this’. I am included as a coheir, I have life in the Lord because He is my Savior. I am sent, like them on a different route to bring my experience of Jesus Christ to others. It is no less than this. May I offer the gift of self, the richness of my faith, and travel the journey with others in this new year.

St. John’s Family Page

And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them… Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. The Epiphany of the Lord is a celebration of Isaiah’s prophecy. Jesus is the Savior of all peoples. The word Epiphany means “manifestation”. Epiphany comes from the Greek words, epi phanos, to appear. Jesus manifested Himself first to the shepherds. So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that have been told them about this child. (Lk2:16-17). The Magi represent the pagan nations. The Magi followed the star, which to ancient cultures represented the birth of a new king. The star led them to Bethlehem to the newborn King of the Universe, Jesus Christ. The Magi had come prepared with gifts. The gifts the Magi brought held deep symbolism. The ancient peoples used myrrh to prepare the dead for burial. Recall that the woman brought myrrh to the tomb of Jesus to prepare His body. Thus, myrrh represents Jesus’s humanity. Frankincense represents the divinity of Jesus. Incense was used by the ancient peoples in their worship. The fragrant aroma soared to the heavens. We use incense as well at a funeral Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and often at solemnities. Finally, gold, the king of all metals is a gift befitting a king. We see that the Magi encountered Jesus and were changed. They came seeking an earthly ruler and left having met the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who

transformed their hearts. When we encounter Jesus in the Eucharist, in Confession or any sacrament, our hearts are transformed. Strengthened by His grace, we are called into action – to bring the light of Christ to our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. A blessed new year to all! Deacon Mike

They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
