It is with a grateful heart that I sit down to share with you my thoughts and reflections involving our 2010 – 2011 year in the development department. Through the generosity of so many alumni, friends, parents, students and faculty members, we had a tremendous year of growth!

The generosity of the amazing students of Saint Bede continues to grow, as they gave countless hours of service through the many events throughout the year. The number of adult volunteers who offered their time and talent to Saint Bede grew by more than one hundred people during the past year. A huge amount of credit goes to Bonnie Prokup for making volunteering a three letter word, FUN! Bonnie has lead this years auction efforts to an all-time high in net profits. The number of alumni connecting back to Saint Bede is growing exponentially. My thanks go out to the dedicated members of the Saint Bede Alumni Committee! I am continually astounded by the faculty and staff members of Saint Bede who dedicate themselves to the care and success of their students.

Blessings abound at Saint Bede and perhaps that is why I feel so much at home here! This year the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” conjures up the image of that little girl from Kansas, who learns through her journey that everything she really wanted was in her own backyard. And so, I have come to learn the same thing about the alumni, family and friends of Saint Bede. I thank God for entrusting me with a small piece of preserving the history and tradition of this place we call ‘home’. I rejoice in the countless contributions that made this year’s Annual Fund and Special Gift Club an overwhelming success. With a 25% increase over the bottom line of the previous year, we have reason to celebrate! The praise and glory are all yours! Every gift truly made a difference --- YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT SAINT BEDE!

I want to acknowledge the guidance, support and faith that have been given to me by each of you. I promise to continue to respect and steward your gifts in the best interest of the entire Saint Bede Community!

The Many Faces of Philanthropy

What is Philanthropy? Philanthropy is a Greek term which directly translated means “love of mankind.” Philanthropy is an idea, event, or action that is done to better humanity and usually involves some sacrifice as opposed to being done for a profit motive. It is the act of sharing of time, talent, and treasure for the common good. Acts of philanthropy include donating money, volunteering your time, or raising money to assist others.

Philanthropy is a way of life at Saint Bede Abbey & Academy. It is important for us to realize that the true lesson being taught at Saint Bede is how we can best be of service and assistance to others. Our faith allows us the confidence to help others and expect nothing in return and to rejoice in knowing that we have done the right thing. So often, the idea of helping others is seen as bothersome or inconvenient. Perhaps in thinking of oneself, it may appear that way. However, when we understand that there is a benefit to both the giver and the receiver, acts of philanthropy are fulfilling. The giver feels a sense of personal satisfaction for having performed the act of kindness and the receiver feels a sense of gratitude and worth for having accepted it.

Whether we refer to the monies raised through our annual fund appeal or the many hands it takes to run the annual Auction Gala, acts of philanthropy are happening all around us. Students volunteer for a community walk on a Sunday afternoon. Parents volunteer to help staff the Fan Gear tent at a home football game. Saint Bede alumni give of their time as alumni committee members to help reconnect other alumni back to Saint Bede. Faculty gives of their time on Homecoming weekend to welcome back alumni. Administrators and staff prepare a memorial tribute to honor a fallen soldier and Saint Bede alumni in hoping to offer support to his family and friends.

We thank God for giving us the opportunity to be a part of the many acts of philanthropy that surround us at Saint Bede Abbey & Academy.

At about 10:30 on the morning of June 7, my

life was radically changed. Before that moment

I was a monk with various jobs, directed by

either Abbot Claude or Academy Administrators.

The moment I accepted the invitation from my

brother monks to become their abbot, I assumed

responsibility for the Abbey, the Academy, our

enterprises and the extended Saint Bede family. I

have never felt so small and inadequate as I did at

that moment, and as I have learned more about

my service to Saint Bede I have become convinced

that without the help of God, my brother monks

and all who in so many ways support Saint Bede, I would be totally overwhelmed.

And so I would like to begin my comments with words of gratitude.

Fr. Claude served Saint Bede Abbey for eight years. He was an exemplary abbot

in his devotion to God, prayer and his unflagging commitment to all of those he

sought to serve. Through his leadership we learned much about the essential

values of our Benedictine way of life, and we daily saw him striving to lead more

by example than by words. He is largely responsible for the improved financial

position of both the Abbey and Academy. He not only addressed small issues,

he made some systemic changes that make the financial challenges I face less

daunting. Since I have been abbot, he has been a very patient, supportive mentor

who is always available to assist me in any way that I ask. If presented with the

opportunity please thank him for his leadership.

I also want to thank Dr. Struck for all he has done to improve Saint Bede

Academy. When he came to Saint Bede, his experience was entirely with public

schools. Working in a private school in partnership with a monastic community

presented him with many challenges that he has embraced. He identified

problems, proposed solutions and made them happen. The changes we have

experienced were not always easy and were sometimes downright painful. But

I have always been firmly convinced that they were taken for the betterment of

Saint Bede Academy. From his article in the Annual Report you can tell that we

are in a better position than we were, and I can assure you that Dr. Struck will not

rest on his laurels, but will continue to try to find new ways to continue to improve

Saint Bede Academy.

Even with all the good news I have mentioned so far, many challenges

still remain. In his Rule, Saint Benedict is very clear that the primary

task of an Abbot is to care for the needs of his monks. This extends far

beyond ordinary needs like food, and is primarily focused on supporting

each monk on their journey to holiness. Benedict clearly recognizes

that every monk is unique and he calls on the abbot to be sensitive to

the needs of each monk. In our present monastic community thirteen

monks are 80 or above. You would not believe how much I am learning

about various physical illnesses and their psychological and spiritual

implications. On the personnel front I am happy to report that our Bro.

Gregory will be ordained a Priest in January, and we have two younger

men (aged 27 and 41) in temporary vows for Saint Bede. Pray for us

and please pray for vocations to our community.

Like almost everyone in the world these days, finances are an issue

at Saint Bede. I am sure it is no surprise to you that the various works

of the monks of Saint Bede are not able to generate enough income to

cover our bills. We are heavily reliant on endowment income which is

determined by our investments, and donations to the abbey through

the annual fund and planned gifts. Because of a good year in the stock

market, and your great generosity to the annual fund, the Abbey was

able to reduce its debt this year. I am going to continue to work in the

development office, and am especially focusing on planned gifts. It has

been our unfortunate experience that some recent planned gifts were

not able to match the intention of the donors, so if you have a planned

gift in your will let us know and I will be happy to work with you to help

you protect the value of your gift. Please know that several times a day,

the monastic community offers prayers for all who support us.

In the coming months and years I hope I will have a lot of good

news to share with you. Know that you and the challenges you face

will always be in our prayers. Let us be people of prayer and firm hope

for our God is a good shepherd who will lead us through all the dark

moments of life to refreshing waters and greener pastures.

I am extremely pleased to have this opportunity to report to you that FY ‘11 was a very good year for Saint Bede Academy. The good news starts with the academic accomplishments of

our students. Our principal, Michelle Mershon and her faculty work diligently to create a high quality learning environment here at Saint Bede Academy. As a result of those efforts Academy students have continued to excel. Ten percent of the class of 2011 was recognized as Illinois State Scholars. Three students have been recognized as National Merit Scholars in the commended (2) and semi-finalist (1) categories. Prior to their graduation from Saint Bede twenty-six members of the class of 2011 earned a combined total of three hundred and three semester hours of college credit through the Academy’s Dual Credit and Early Entry college programs. Along with these many achievements we were also able to increase the number of “Smart Classrooms” in the Academy from seven to nine. Our ability to create and expand these technology rich classrooms is the direct result of the hard work and generosity of the Bedan Club. We do not take these accomplishments lightly. We are, therefore, committed to working to maintain the highest quality teaching/learning environment possible so that our students will continue to have the best available opportunity to excel educationally. The Academy’s FY ’11 financial audit also provided us reason to celebrate. Our FY ‘11 operating budget showed a positive balance of $5,738. Along with this cash balance we were able to write down our accrued debt of 1.8 million dollars to 1.4 million dollars due to a non cash investment portfolio appreciation of roughly $400,000. This strong end of year position occurred despite a write off of $66,000 due to uncollected capitol campaign pledges that currently amount to $462,000. Acknowledgement of those responsible for this year’s success is rightfully spread throughout the entire Saint Bede family. With Mrs. Mershon’s support the faculty continues to prove its

professionalism and capability by motivating and providing our students with a learning environment that fosters academic achievement. Our treasurer Eve Postula (84) worked diligently with Saint Bede friend John Micheli to correct drainage problems that resulted in cutting our current and future wastewater expenses by more than $16,000 per year. Abbot Claude (44) oversaw the process that led to the replacement of outdated and inefficient boilers that provided heat for both the Abbey and the Academy. This effort resulted in a 24% or $25,000 savings in energy costs in FY ’11 for the Academy. Admissions officer Tom McGunnigal (88) is maintaining a student population of 300 while Abbot Philip (65) has brought the boarding student population up to its desired capacity. The Development Office under the direction of Donna Aleksy benefitted from (your) alumni and friends generosity with an outstanding 45% increase in Annual Fund donations while Bonnie Prokup and her volunteers netted a record $210,000 in our best auction ever. In order to continue to bring you positive messages in future Annual Reports we must continue to benefit from the efforts of those people who are able to consistently have a positive impact on the future of Saint Bede Academy. We must continue to offer the best secondary school experience available to the students of the Illinois Valley. We must continue to manage our budget as efficiently as possible. We must continue to benefit from the generosity of alumni and friends. Finally, we must maintain a day student/ boarding student population that allows us to operate at a high level of efficiency. In FY ’11 we were able to achieve these goals. After this year’s success I am confident that together we are capable of maintaining a financially sound and vibrant Saint Bede Academy.

From the minute you set eyes on the state-of-the-art electric sign and begin to drive down the Saint Bede lane, you are experiencing the gift of talent given to us by The Bedan Club! For more than 50 years The Bedan Club has been supporting Saint Bede Abbey & Academy through their gifts of time, talent and treasure. Today, we honor the gift of time and talent given to us by more than 5,000 men who have called themselves members of The Bedan Club. Established in 1960, The Bedan Club is a service organization with an open and unlimited membership. It operates under the guidance of a Board of Directors which includes a President, a first Vice President, and a second Vice President, a Treasurer, a Secretary and an abbey moderator appointed by the abbot. Since 1964 Fr. Arthur Schmit has been the abbey moderator. When asked why he has continued to accept the moderator position for so many years, he simply states “I enjoy it very much. It gives me an opportunity to get to know the men who are willing to give of their time and talent to make a difference here at Saint Bede.” From the club’s membership dues, along with the proceeds from the famous ‘Saint Bede Pork Chop Tent’ during home football games, The Bedan Club uses its resources to the aide the monks and students of Saint Bede. They have funded such endeavors as the electric sign that welcomes everyone to Saint Bede; the mini-buses that our athletes and clubs use to get where they need to be; Smart Boards for each classroom; and most recently, the china and glassware used for

the annual Auction Gala. The residual benefits of these gifts are immeasurable. We are so grateful to have an organization here at Saint Bede that always puts the needs of others first. As a service organization there have been many major construction projects that The Bedan Club has been responsible in providing: a major addition to the gymnasium; additions to the football stadium press box; they assisted with the construction of the softball shed and both ball diamonds; maintaining the trees on the lane; and most recently, they rebuilt and expanded the Saint Bede shelter. The following quote embodies The Bedan Club and their mission:

The definition of legacy is something that is passed on to you from family. We at Saint Bede Abbey & Academy are blessed to have an extended family that spans the continent. This year in an effort to express our gratitude to those ‘family members’ who have made it their intention to create and leave a legacy through their generosity to Saint Bede, we have established the first legacy society. We are proud to pay tribute to the 14 inaugural members of The Abbot Philip Davey Legacy Society for their Gift of Treasure: Bill Adams (JC ’62), Walter ‘Durly’ Boyle (posthumously), Msgr. Edward Duncan (’33), John Geiger (’52), Fred Golden (’48), Tony Mertel (’42), Lyle Micheli (’58), Gordon Moran (’56), Angelo Perino (’80), Atty. Paul Perona (’56), Tony Rich, Dr. Jerome Sickley, Mike Sitterly, and Charles Stewart (’53) On Wednesday, September 14, 2011 in the Saint Bede Abbey Church lounge, a special luncheon was held to honor, recognize and induct the new members of the Abbot Philip Davey Legacy Society. After an informal lunch, Abbot Philip Davey shared an update from the abbey and Dr. Ted Struck shared an update from the academy. Donna Aleksy provided the 2011 – 2012 development plan for the abbey and the academy. As a symbol of our eternal gratitude for all that these men and their families have sacrificed for Saint Bede, they

were presented with a silver & blue Saint Benedict Medal and a framed print of our beloved Saint Bede campus. “I may be here for a short while, gone tomorrow or until the days come to take me away. But, in whatever part you play, be remembered as part of a legacy...of sharing dreams and changing humanity for the better. The Development Office under the direction of Donna Aleksy benefitted from (your) alumni and friends generosity with an outstanding 45% increase in Annual Fund donations while Bonnie Prokup and her volunteers netted a record $210,000 in our best auction ever. In order to continue to bring you positive messages in future Annual Reports we must continue to benefit from the efforts of those people who are able to consistently have a positive impact on the future of Saint Bede Academy. We must continue to offer the best secondary school experience available to the students of the Illinois Valley. We must continue to manage our budget as efficiently as possible. We must continue to benefit from the generosity of alumni and friends. Finally, we must maintain a day student/ boarding student population that allows us to operate at a high level of efficiency. In FY ’11 we were able to achieve these goals. After this year’s success I am confident that together we are capable of maintaining a financially sound and vibrant Saint Bede Academy.

Even with all the good news I have mentioned so far, many challenges

still remain. In his Rule, Saint Benedict is very clear that the primary

task of an Abbot is to care for the needs of his monks. This extends far

beyond ordinary needs like food, and is primarily focused on supporting

each monk on their journey to holiness. Benedict clearly recognizes

that every monk is unique and he calls on the abbot to be sensitive to

the needs of each monk. In our present monastic community thirteen

monks are 80 or above. You would not believe how much I am learning

about various physical illnesses and their psychological and spiritual

implications. On the personnel front I am happy to report that our Bro.

Gregory will be ordained a Priest in January, and we have two younger

men (aged 27 and 41) in temporary vows for Saint Bede. Pray for us

and please pray for vocations to our community.

Like almost everyone in the world these days, finances are an issue

at Saint Bede. I am sure it is no surprise to you that the various works

of the monks of Saint Bede are not able to generate enough income to

cover our bills. We are heavily reliant on endowment income which is

determined by our investments, and donations to the abbey through

the annual fund and planned gifts. Because of a good year in the stock

market, and your great generosity to the annual fund, the Abbey was

able to reduce its debt this year. I am going to continue to work in the

development office, and am especially focusing on planned gifts. It has

been our unfortunate experience that some recent planned gifts were

not able to match the intention of the donors, so if you have a planned

gift in your will let us know and I will be happy to work with you to help

you protect the value of your gift. Please know that several times a day,

the monastic community offers prayers for all who support us.

In the coming months and years I hope I will have a lot of good

news to share with you. Know that you and the challenges you face

will always be in our prayers. Let us be people of prayer and firm hope

for our God is a good shepherd who will lead us through all the dark

moments of life to refreshing waters and greener pastures.

At about 10:30 on the morning of June 7, my

life was radically changed. Before that moment

I was a monk with various jobs, directed by

either Abbot Claude or Academy Administrators.

The moment I accepted the invitation from my

brother monks to become their abbot, I assumed

responsibility for the Abbey, the Academy, our

enterprises and the extended Saint Bede family. I

have never felt so small and inadequate as I did at

that moment, and as I have learned more about

my service to Saint Bede I have become convinced

that without the help of God, my brother monks

and all who in so many ways support Saint Bede, I would be totally overwhelmed.

And so I would like to begin my comments with words of gratitude.

Fr. Claude served Saint Bede Abbey for eight years. He was an exemplary abbot

in his devotion to God, prayer and his unflagging commitment to all of those he

sought to serve. Through his leadership we learned much about the essential

values of our Benedictine way of life, and we daily saw him striving to lead more

by example than by words. He is largely responsible for the improved financial

position of both the Abbey and Academy. He not only addressed small issues,

he made some systemic changes that make the financial challenges I face less

daunting. Since I have been abbot, he has been a very patient, supportive mentor

who is always available to assist me in any way that I ask. If presented with the

opportunity please thank him for his leadership.

I also want to thank Dr. Struck for all he has done to improve Saint Bede

Academy. When he came to Saint Bede, his experience was entirely with public

schools. Working in a private school in partnership with a monastic community

presented him with many challenges that he has embraced. He identified

problems, proposed solutions and made them happen. The changes we have

experienced were not always easy and were sometimes downright painful. But

I have always been firmly convinced that they were taken for the betterment of

Saint Bede Academy. From his article in the Annual Report you can tell that we

are in a better position than we were, and I can assure you that Dr. Struck will not

rest on his laurels, but will continue to try to find new ways to continue to improve

Saint Bede Academy.

The Many Faces of Philanthropy

What is Philanthropy? Philanthropy is a Greek term which directly translated means “love of mankind.” Philanthropy is an idea, event, or action that is done to better humanity and usually involves some sacrifice as opposed to being done for a profit motive. It is the act of sharing of time, talent, and treasure for the common good. Acts of philanthropy include donating money, volunteering your time, or raising money to assist others.

Philanthropy is a way of life at Saint Bede Abbey & Academy. It is important for us to realize that the true lesson being taught at Saint Bede is how we can best be of service and assistance to others. Our faith allows us the confidence to help others and expect nothing in return and to rejoice in knowing that we have done the right thing. So often, the idea of helping others is seen as bothersome or inconvenient. Perhaps in thinking of oneself, it may appear that way. However, when we understand that there is a benefit to both the giver and the receiver, acts of philanthropy are fulfilling. The giver feels a sense of personal satisfaction for having performed the act of kindness and the receiver feels a sense of gratitude and worth for having accepted it.

Whether we refer to the monies raised through our annual fund appeal or the many hands it takes to run the annual Auction Gala, acts of philanthropy are happening all around us. Students volunteer for a community walk on a Sunday afternoon. Parents volunteer to help staff the Fan Gear tent at a home football game. Saint Bede alumni give of their time as alumni committee members to help reconnect other alumni back to Saint Bede. Faculty gives of their time on Homecoming weekend to welcome back alumni. Administrators and staff prepare a memorial tribute to honor a fallen soldier and Saint Bede alumni in hoping to offer support to his family and friends.

We thank God for giving us the opportunity to be a part of the many acts of philanthropy that surround us at Saint Bede Abbey & Academy.

It is with a grateful heart that I sit down to share with you my thoughts and reflections involving our 2010 – 2011 year in the development department. Through the generosity of so many alumni, friends, parents, students and faculty members, we had a tremendous year of growth!

The generosity of the amazing students of Saint Bede continues to grow, as they gave countless hours of service through the many events throughout the year. The number of adult volunteers who offered their time and talent to Saint Bede grew by more than one hundred people during the past year. A huge amount of credit goes to Bonnie Prokup for making volunteering a three letter word, FUN! Bonnie has lead this years auction efforts to an all-time high in net profits. The number of alumni connecting back to Saint Bede is growing exponentially. My thanks go out to the dedicated members of the Saint Bede Alumni Committee! I am continually astounded by the faculty and staff members of Saint Bede who dedicate themselves to the care and success of their students.

Blessings abound at Saint Bede and perhaps that is why I feel so much at home here! This year the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” conjures up the image of that little girl from Kansas, who learns through her journey that everything she really wanted was in her own backyard. And so, I have come to learn the same thing about the alumni, family and friends of Saint Bede. I thank God for entrusting me with a small piece of preserving the history and tradition of this place we call ‘home’. I rejoice in the countless contributions that made this year’s Annual Fund and Special Gift Club an overwhelming success. With a 25% increase over the bottom line of the previous year, we have reason to celebrate! The praise and glory are all yours! Every gift truly made a difference --- YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT SAINT BEDE!

I want to acknowledge the guidance, support and faith that have been given to me by each of you. I promise to continue to respect and steward your gifts in the best interest of the entire Saint Bede Community!
