Its aim was to encourage children to feel safe and confident with situations and to learn about the safety networks available to them. Whilst being an educational tool, the children were entertained, captivated and involved in the energetic, interactive production which included actions, music and dance. Through the characters and stories, the children were shown strategies of how to deal with bullying, bike safety and feeling afraid. The three key messages were: 1. Protective Behaviours: Safety Networks and teaching we can talk with someone about anything no matter what it is; 2. Bullying and Bystander Behaviour; and 3. Bicycle and non-motorised wheeled recreational toys: the wearing of safety helmets and safety equipment to prevent injury. HAND FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

Recently a case of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease has been

reported in the school community. Hand, foot and mouth

disease is caused by a number of different viruses. It is not

a serious illness and has nothing to do with animal diseases

with similar names (i.e. foot and mouth disease in livestock).

It is a relatively common illness in children.

The symptoms of this disease include blisters inside the

cheeks, gums and on the sides of the tongue, as well as on

their hands and feet. Children with hand, foot and mouth

disease may have a low fever, be listless and may not eat well

for a day or two.

There is no vaccination for prevention against hand foot and

mouth disease. The best form of protection is good hygiene:

wash hands with soap and water for at least 15

seconds and dry thoroughly before handling food,

after going to the toilet.

implement good cleaning procedures

allow blisters to dry naturally and do not

deliberately pierce blisters because the fluid within

the blisters in infectious.

Students with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease will be

excluded from school until all blisters have dried.

BOMB THREATS

You would be aware that a number of schools in Queensland

and interstate have been the subject of bomb threats in

recent times. Police believe the majority of the calls have

originated overseas and are designed to cause disruption and

alarm.

Should such a threat be received, the school has Critical

Incident Management Procedures which would be

implemented immediately. The safety of students and staff

is always our first priority. In the case of a bomb threat,

students would be evacuated from buildings to safe areas.

Students and staff take part in drills each year to practise

this or similar scenarios.

For the safety of the entire school community, it is essential

that these procedures are followed through to their

completion. If parents attempt to enter the school site and

collect their children during an evacuation, then the safety

of all in the school community can be compromised. Because

of this, the school requests that in the case of our Critical

Incident Management Procedures being instigated, parents

allow the school to follow the procedures, as the safety of all

members of the school community is paramount.

Should such a situation arise, the school will follow the

directions of Police at all times and endeavour to contact

parents by SMS to alert you to the situation.

Please be assured that the school will always take any such

threats seriously and do everything in our power to ensure

the safety of all members of our school community.

PREP ENROLMENTS 2017

Prep enrolments for 2017 are now being taken. If you have a

child due to commence Prep next year (born between 1 July

2011 and 30 June 2012), please complete an enrolment form

available from the office or on our website. These will need

to be returned to the office along with a certified copy of

your child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate and

immunisation records.

We need to sight the original birth certificate or have a

PRAYERS

Please remember in your prayers

anyone who is sick within our community.

We pray for God’s healing and

restoration.

Project Compassion 2016 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT – 21 February

Sunday’s opening prayer asks God to ‘nourish us inwardly with your word.’ The transformation of our lives, the times we will ‘see God’ will come if we are open to hearing God’s word in our lives, not just with our ears but also with our hearts.

The disciples had first to climb the mountain with Jesus in order to encounter God’s presence. What mountains are we invited to climb? Our learning and growing towards better relationships, patience with ourselves and with others can become our Lenten observance, and indeed, the gift we offer with bread and wine at Mass. In this way we too will come to ‘see God’ in our daily lives.

Our community extends beyond those from our local community. We are urged to reach out to all people and we remember especially the people of Laos featured in Project Compassion who need us to walk with them to enable all in their country to live with dignity and respect. These too are our sisters and brothers in Christ.

God’s word can be revealed to us in times of challenge if we open our hearts. God’s word is also revealed to us in those around us. Seeing the face of God on the mountain calls us to see the face of God in our neighbour.

Each class has a Project Compassion Box in which to make donations during Lent. There are also boxes located in the Office and Library.

With limited support services for children living with intellectual disabilities in Laos, Duangmala feared that her eight-year-old son, Hum Noy, would never reach his full potential because he has Down Syndrome. However, he now has the chance to learn and thrive at a school for children with intellectual disabilities, supported by Caritas Australia.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2016 and help children living with intellectual disabilities in Laos learn, grow and reach their full potential. You can donate through School boxes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.
