Beat ty -Co leby JIM MIGHELLS

Caught the 1982 edition of the Beatty-Cole Circus at Burlington, NC, on April 21.Since I arrived after the 4 p.m. matineehad started, I waited until the 8 p.m. per-formance. Rain and cold weather kept muchof the crowd away and the lot was a secondchoice with the fairgrounds partially underwater.

Cold winds made the snow cones seem apoor choice to while away the time, but theconcession help said the coffee was only forthe help. With temperatures in the '40s thebutchers could have sold barrels of coffee.Cie la vie.

The front end looked good with newpaint jobs on the ticket and concessionwagons. Two other trailers were pulled upto lead the crowd into the front with smallconcession and souvenier stand, moon walkand elephant rides to occupy the crowdthat waited. It was interesting to watch theelephant ride, the cow doing it seemed theonly one interested, numerous times shewalked the kids around on her own withthe two 'attendants' never even looking ather or the kids, to see if they ended theride with as many as started. Thankfully, one of the three at least knew her job.

Several new tractors were in evidencewith new paint jobs on the others to givea nice overal appearance and impressionas you come in. The show is framed, fresh, clean and neat.

Russet Darr leads a strong brassy bandthat backs the show up all the way, theprogram says eight man but from where Isat I could only count six, whatever, theysounded good, from start to end.

The show was good, cold windy weatheror no, the audience stayed for the wholeshow, teeth clicking and knees a knockingand loved it.

Overture by the band, followed by TheCircus on Parade with all artists, ringstockand elephants, followed by Capt DaveHoover and the cats, lions and tigers. Ed-uardo Duo next with a good aerial perchthat couldn't be appreciated as much withdistractions of knocking down the area.

Vashek on inclined wire followed, thenthree rings ef juggling lovely ladies. Clowns

followed with the safe cracking bit. Astrong clown alley with the venerable MikeKaye and several good bits including onewith a clown singing for the spec.

Oscarian Brothers presented good com-edy trampoline routine with lots of classand timing. Two ring perch routines fol-lowed by the spec 'Clown Fantasy Spec-tacular' with artists, clowns and kids fromthe audience and the singing clown, a nicenumber that left you feeling good.

Aerial ballet with 10 ladders, traps in endrings and cloud swing in center ring withone, very gorgeous group of girls. Intermis-sion.

With the cold, the donnicker got morebusiness than the elephant rides pitchedin intermission. A nice touch was theclowns giving autographs during the colorbook pitch, a lotta little kids came backto their seats with shining eyes for that

Show started again with the rolling globesthen Flying Alvarez on flying trapeze withthe youner one doing the triple. Welde'sRussian Bears still have the best dancingbear I have ever seen in this country.

Forgot, in first half was also ChristineHerriott with dogs and pony routine, dogpart is good but the pony resinback poodlesare very good. After the bears the Herriottspresent two high school horses in a niceroutine, separately and coming together inthe center ring. Classy.

Three ring teeterboards with Ayalas, Es-tradas and Martins, again quick, classy rou-tines. Capt. Fred Logan and Family presenteight bulls - 5 in one ring, 3 in another end-ing with long mount. Good presentation ofa good act. Finale.

Costuming was super, prop crew worksquiet and clean in new red coveralls andgenerally the show is smooth and well puttogether.

Jimmy James ties things together anddoes several songs with different acts. Allin all, I thought it was a fine show worththe price... .but I'd have enjoyed it morewith a cup of coffee.

CHS Conventionby CHRIS AUDIBERT

The 1982 CHS Convention was the firstone I'd ever been able to attend, althoughI am a charter member holding Card No.14.

I'd planned to drive down to Washingtonfrom New York, but old Nellie acted upand I had to put it into a garage. ThereforeI took the Greyhound South on 1-95 and itwas nice that I went that way, as I wasable to spot the Olympic Amusements (car-nival) trucks and equipment on its wayNorth from Baltimore to it's next stand atShea Stadium.

Arriving in Washington, 1 checked into thehotel and registered in with Richard Flint. Then started the beautiful time, meetingand talking with people I'd corresdondedwith but had never had the good fortuneto meet. Stuart Thayer and his lovely brideJoe McKennan and so many, many others.Of course, Jim Hassan, the Schmids andsome others I already knew from elsewherebut a new friend I made was George C.Bingaman, to whom I was able to makemy room shower-and bed available to re-fresh himself before going downstairs forthe evening festivities.

To those who for one reason or anotherwere unable to attend, you missed out ona lot of fun.

The steam calliope from Miamisburg, Oh.was taped recorded by several members andbrought back memories of Crazy Ray andothers from my earlier days.

The circus under John Herriott was firstrate with the wild west after show withJonny Rivers and Frank Dean, was muchlike the old days and a treat for us backdoor fans.

John Herriott and his candy pitch onSaturday afternoon provided one hugelaugh to several of us when a mother andher kid pushed thru the exciting crowd totry to get that huge box of K & C Candyfor only 25c and a prize inside. When weexplained to her that this was just an ex-ample of the candy pitch of years ago andthat there was no candy, she was a disap-pointed woman.

The air calliope in the top provided agood background of music for the various

acts.

Now, inside the museum was more funand pleasure. Miller up from Sarasota withhis model of the Hemisphere wagon andhitch and the scroll carving of his two bud-dies, showed how Sebastian and other wa-gon carvers worked. Down in the locomo-tive room Gordon Carver was carving fig-ures and had part of his Bamum showtrain with wagons and bulls.

There was also the Clown Make-up Boothwith Danny Chapman and Bill Ballantine. Also clown wig and nose make-up booth. The clown shoe making booth, the sideshow panel painting booth, the wardrobebooth, on the top floor, where you couldtry on the clothes, and last but not least, the side show under Ward Hall was purepleasure. All the acts were first rate andmeeting Lorerta Fulkenson, the TattooedLady, the lady I'd like to marry so thatwhen I got bored with life I could alwaysask her to disrobe so I could attend themoving pictures.

The films were something else again. Wewere presented with wild west films thatone seldom sees, also a film of the Barnum& Bailey parade of 1903-04, and 15 or soother films. And how about the poster tourat the library and the circus exhibit at theCorcoran.

The banquet was first class with themembers of the various circus and sideshow acts as guests. Since Richard Flinthad made this convention one of the bestif not the best, as many members said, Icalled for a standing ovation and it wasthe pleasure of every person in the hall tostand.

After a fine speech and several poems byJohn Herriott the banquet broke up intoan informal meeting. I was just sorry thatI wasn't able to stay for the band concerton Sunday, but many of us had to leavefor home.

It was "all out and over" and a beautifultime was had by all. The weather co-oper-ated by being perfect.

Betty Leonard, where were you?Looking forward to next year. But one

thing I think we should start to talk upwith the other fan organizations is to getCongress to take circus people out of the

On Sunday, Apr. 25th, we visited GopherDavenport's Ford Bros. Circus near Gibolo,Texas, and then we attended the show atBoeme, Texas on Apr. 26th.

It had been mentioned how the show hadbeen painted and lettered. Trucks were allnewly painted, but there was no letteringon any of them.

The new big top, a foreign type fromBruno, is truly beautiful in red and white. It is hard to describe, but it appears to bebased on a 60 ft. round top with three 30ft middles, all sewed together. Then thereis a long additional piece, appearing to be3 more square 30 ft. middles, sewn togeth-er. This long piece inserts between thehalves of the basic tent, with center poleson each side, a total of 8 aluminum centerpoles. The tent is high enough to rig a Me-xican style flying rigging.

There are three sets of ring curb, and thearena stays up at the far end of the tent

Addie Netti Stubblefield Carlson, age 89,was buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park, inDallas, Texas, on April 12th.

She was born in San Antonio, Texas, in1892, to George and Annie Stubblefield. Atthe age of 5 her father died and four yearslater her mother married a circus acrobatnamed George Lowe.

Addie became a performer at the age often, as the Lowe family travelled through-out Illinois with a Medicine Show untilthey created a new act and played manysmall circuses as The Stubblefield Trio. Bythe time Addie was 14, the trio had madeit to the top and were featured performerson the biggest circus of them all * RinglingBros. They travelled and lived in a suite onthe 85 car train and swung from trapezesas much as 75 ft. in the air.

It was a hard and demanding life, but awonderful life full of great and romanticmemories that Addie never forgot.

Hoxie Bros.by JIM RIDENOUR

The writer visited Hoxie's big tenter atDayton, Tenn., Apr. 21 and in Crossville,Tenn., on Apr. 24th. The Dayton datewas a sell out and a repeat for the Amer-ican Legion.

Crossville started out bad as the stakeshit rock about 8 in. in the ground. Afterabout 2 hours of effort John Lewis wasabout to pack it up when a local clowndid some coordination with the BaptistChurch to obtain a decent lot.

The more than adequate crew finally gotit up by 4 p.m. They are to be commend-ed for their " the show must go on" atti-tude. And it did go on.

The program was reviewed earlier, so Iwill cover the staff, as my opinion is "ifyou can't move it. you can't show it" Myfriend Jimmy Silverlake is the supt, keep-ing 14 plus pieces of show owned rollingstock moving. John Lewis as general man-ager and Billy Griffin in the wagon werereal nice as is always the case. Mrs. Moyeris on the front door and is always nice tous fans.

After three years of hard work, Mike Mil-ler has moved up to concession manager. This young man, along with his wife, arehard workers and will no doubt do a greatjob. The Dykes Bros, have the garbage.

Oh, yes, Hoxie has real clowns this yearand they do a real fine job. Arthur andBee Stone, of Louisiana, look and act likeclowns and they made my day.

The 6 piece band (earlier reported as 5pieces) do a bang up job. I loved them.Charles Moyer is in charge and on trumpet,Danny Reynolds, tuba, Wayne Reynolds,

trombone with Faye Reynolds, organ. Thesixth member is the singing ringmaster GaryHolveck who fills is on baratpne. This guyHolveck is pro all the way with excellentannouncing skills, works illusions and worksthem with class. He projects, a lot of personality with zim and vigor, I like him.

I missed Roger Boyd, Jr.'s side show asthe only thing on the midway was a giantsnake show, owned by John Lewis.

I must mention young, wild Bill Kramerwith the cat act. He does a nice job. Whatreally turned me on was the revamped bullact. Joe Frisco has really earned his salt ina short period of time. In my 8 years ofvisits I have never seen Hoxie's bull actmove faster or look better.

The tall blonde on traps is Sharon Ward. She looks good and knows her stuff. Thedog act with the wire walking torn cat de-serves mentioning. It is cute.

That drunk sailor, Lee Merriott, on thetight wire has it all together. He has a goodturn. Was glad to see a flying act this sea-son and th Flying Gaonas add a lot.

Doris and her Kids (goats) got a goodhand and well deserved. I didn't get thename of the nice lady with the dressage. Iam indeed sorry as she deserves to be men-tioned. The Indian wardrobe is first classall the way.

Gene Mall is chief mechanic, keeping itall rolling. Thanks Gene, for fixing my badbattery cable. I guess you wanted to getme off the lot.

Old timer Jim Waynick is one of the elec-tricians, Staoh Quinn is back as boss canvasman and his wife has the pie car.

I know I must have missed someone and

Circus Americaby GEORGE C. BINGAMAN

Ed Migley's Circus America (formerly Cir-cus Odyssey) reached Wilkes-Barre whenIrem Temple sponsored the internationalshow for their opening American season atKingston Armory, Apr. 12-18. Migley'sroute card includes dates in Mexico and inPuerto Rico with negotiations presently un-derway for dates at several Japanese andPhilippine locations later in the season.

Circus America sparkles with good music, boisterous joeys, a grand mix of top ani-mal acts and other great thrills and skillsin a three ring extravaganza. A circus trainof car-wagons steams in the opener featur-ing the great representative freaks of theside shows as the performers parade theirtalents, embellished spectacular lightingand telescoping decor giving the festiveentry a wonderland atmosphere. Migjey re-places his props annually, maintaining thefresh new appearance. Bill Fischer martial:ten musicians peppering the effective un-derscoring of the acts a-la- Merle Evans,Stan Freeburg is the organist. Don Williams, former Ringling clown ringmasters the showin crisp style.

A great number of types of performinganimals were displayed in the 1982 edition.Harry Thomas' 12 Bengal and Siberian ti-gers explode the action in the big cage.Jeouvans Baboons • five of them - are a-gile, clever and highly entertaining as NiniHall ados her stunning beauty to a spark-ling exhibition of apery. Arias performingbears, four bouncing bruins, offer an as-sortment of hind leg stands and tricks, walking on a rotating cylinder, swingingfrom an aerial swing, doing a group bandnumber, forming a 'Hello Dolly' chorusline. The high point was reached in the11th display, three rings of dog acts, thebest combo I've seen in twelve years. Whata beautiful sight! Golden Retrievers in onering, black Dobermans in ring two , blackand white Dalmatians with spotted horsein ring three • they captured my top award.Trudy's Dalmatians (great liberty evolu-tions, turn arounds, situps). Alberlis Pin-schers and Arias' Golden Retrievers makean outstanding trio of performing canines.I was mesmerized by Albertis entrance viathe magic box when opened produced

those dandy Dobermans.Gee Gee's Performing Elephants whipped

into a fast paced pachydermic maneuver byRoy Wells and Elaine delighted the crowdas their three bulls were dressed to thrillwith blue and white head harnesses andankle bands set off by the white toes.

Aerial wizardry abounded in two rings ofcradle by The Dianes and the Cavanaughs, low wire artistry by the Ricardo Troupe, the dynamic Pirates of the Sky, the FlyingValentines, the aerial web ballet of six beauties centered by Hone Lucia and finally theindominable Quassars and their rocket shipspace thriller.

Two comedy routines, the doctor-nurse-patient gimmick and the markmanshipfarce by Migley's four joeys, Rick Nash,Irving Hall, Gary Griffin and Eugene Pig-eon provided the guffaws. Prof. Schappe'scomedy piano is a one-of-its-kind rib tick-ler. The large and small grand pianos, self-propelled, squirt water, detonate explosionsfire shots and run Heir Professor out of thering. Great comic gimmicry!

Rudolphe Delmonte is a golden-hairedheart stealer, spell-bounding with unbeliev-able contortion, a series of one hand standsand iron jaw mouth-based mount whilewhirling discs with arms and legs. Theyoung Dutchman follows in the train ofhis famous teacher-mother who assists. An-na Delmonte was an RBBB star in the '40sestablishing her fame in Europe as a con-tortionist, acrobat and chimpanzee trainer.

The Pietro Cannestrelli Family providedmy top thrill because I have been able tosee them for nine years in succession onvarious circuses as children and parents, each year different acts, each year thechildren maturing, growing and improving.Pietro and Joyce bring their tribe from It-aly and now offer a low wire wizardry viaThe Ricardo Troupe, aerial stardome abovethe ballet via llona Lucia and finally thegreat Cannestrelli Troupe teeterboard cli-maxing with a four-high mount. The mar-vel to me here is the family story - sixchildren and their parents happy together, growing into manhood and womanhoodas they are devoted to each other and theircraft.

The Cannestrelli's are but one of count-

less happy, healthy, high-class circus fam-ilies who put average America to shame intheir strong family unity. Away with thisnonsense that circus life is injurious to thechildren. Those who preach this baloneyare not acquainted with what's going on inthe American circus society.

There was another surpriser in the Can-nestrelli camp as I watched those six love-ly young aerialists on the web. I was awedby their beauty, youth and grace until"Eureka" • there I discovered young Joyce, the forever young mother of the six Can-nestrelli's, performing with her young dau-ghters and other damozels, blending in asanother young aerialist! My dear Joyce. I'veseen you perform many times but neverbetter as a young teenie-bopper on Migley's'82 web. You are my Circus Mother of theYear! Keep flying.

Flying flags, sparklers surrounding thestilt-walker and the short clown • Migley'sshow sparkled to its close. Keep it up, Ed.

A special acknowledgement for Migley'sprop staff, Rocky and Wilbur Rebideau.

Bio John's Showby RA Y BRETHER/Sho' Artist

For the past 5 years I've come out of re-tirement to refurbish Big John Strong's Cir-cus equipment.

Some may say "What's a Sho' Artist?"he is • signpaimer - with an 'artistic flare'for the show • it may be Circus, Theatreor Legitimate Stage and scenic drops. Heknows a 3 sheet from a 24 sheet, even aone sheet. Rarely in the business is he cal-led a sign painter, and he is not ashamedof the title.

Statistics, I leave to others better quali-fied, on how many tent shows remain to*day, but I am well aware of the disappear-ing touch of "Americana" - that its no ef-fort on my part - God willing, to help pre-serve it

Big John Strong has a new show this yearand even the tent is bigger. My job was todirect artistic embellishments wherever. Camoflaguing a bus was one ordeal. John's midway is bigger, but what pleased me this

year was the general attitude of all thesenew talents • doubling at whatever theyjumped into to do. I could not have doneit without them. Their hired talents weredisplayed at "dress rehearsal" which leftme spellbound. I never once asked a per-son to do the job given a second time -their talents amazed me.

Sugar and Spice are with John again thisyear - an outstanding performance in everyphase. J. J. Evans, the cowboy who excellsin hatches and rope twirling did an out-standing performance. Watch this lad in thefuture, I feel we have another Charlie Rus-sell in our midst He is a master at what hetackles. It is easy to write about J. J. Ev-ans as he has toiled with me for severalyears.

Jim Zaj iccek. was an ardent art helperhis talents really surprised me, with hisbalancing act in the center ring. Curtis Cai-nain, master of many of the applied artshas a unique dog act, supported by SherriePfau. Darvk Gass and Marion Sems perfor-med their share with the rest.
