CARNIVAL ON WHEELS

CARNIVAL ON WHEELSInformal Entertainment Space

IntroductionChildren today are couch potatoes, slaves of technology. Always hooked to Screens i.e. TVs, tabs, Laptops, etc.Why In-home entertainment is convenient, and glimpse of something beyond everyday lifeOne of the apt entertainment providers is the circus and is still going on with full glee and pulling crowdsBut this isnt the case with all the circus companies in India.Only the big ones have survived, like the Ringling Brothers, the great Bombay circus, and the Gemini Circus. The smaller ones are dying off because of the ban on animals and the lack of space and infrastructure.Need of the Hour Promote healthy means of entertainmentTo engage desire and fantasy in outdoor entertainmentsSo my thesis is an attempt to revive this dying culture, a healthy means of entertainment, an object of greatest interest and to restore the livelihood of the circus artists.

Why Informal Entertainment SpaceSuch spaces punctuate the homogenous, staged, controlled, official public spaces and the everyday, ubiquitous spaces of the contemporary city. Social breathing spaces - After hectic works for adults and schooling for kids, people tend to something comfortable. Kids usually arnt keen on formal entertainment spaces. We believe this is so because arts make public spaces enjoyable, they create shared experience, and they encourage intergenerational activity. Components of comprehensive community development should include space for amateur and semi-professional performance. There are many ways for philanthropy, government and the private sector to support the supply of informal arts, the demand for informal arts, and the availability of space. The purpose of this report is to show that arts and cultural activities are a very important piece of the community development agenda, not only because of their ability to attract an audience, and brand cities and neighborhoods as desirable locations, but also because of the way that informal, amateur arts participation makes everyday life in neighborhoods more valuable to residents by magnetization through fun, shared experience, and increased intergenerational contact.

Circus - The PastThe biggest entertainments of the past, where the crowds exceeded the capacity and this entertainment was beyond what cinemas have today. The traveling conglomeration of trained animals, acrobats, and clowns is a concept believed to originate during the times of Ancient Rome. The typical circus was held within an oval or circular showground with tiered seating often flanking the edges. Other circuses performed under a large tent, in some places, an open-air stadium served as the arena where an array of public exhibitions took place. Horse races, Elephant Shows, Tiger Rings, Lion Stunts, staged battles, equestrian shows, and chariot competitions unfolded, as spectators cheered and embraced this exhilarating form of entertainment.Animals and kids were a major part of the performance.

Circus - TodayBig Companies survived, Small shows all shut down. They have transformed with time and adapted to the trends of new generation.Ban on Animals, Ban on Kids, No proper infrastructure. Lack of open space. The Circus Artists have lost their livelihood. They are demanding the animals back in order to restore their livelihoods.Still the craze goes on, The big Circuses tour the Country, exhibiting their performances, enthralling crowds. People still are drawn to these events in large numbers.Children still get excited when The Circus comes to Town.

DESIGN INTROVENTIONSCIRCUS ARTISTSA troupe of Artists perform to entertain the masses. They travel from place to place in caravans. They pitch their tents in open grounds. They set up their huge structure and entertain people for days.Again they pack up and shift their locations. They are like nomads.

SOME VIABLE DESIGN ALTERNATIVESTheir caravans can be designed such that they act as retractable tents.Caravans can be connected together to form huge Amphitheatre for performance and audience seating. The caravan arrangement can be kinetic in nature. Adjustable to space availability and trainsformation in structure to ivade monotony.Again they pack up and shift their locations. They are like nomads.

Seethu (China) balances on a wooden plank which is placed on five cylindrical rollers, one on top of the other forming a vertical pyramid. She takes a circular ring and passes it simultaneously balancing on the cylindrical roller. It is indeed a feat that she balances on the rollers and performs some spectacular acrobatic acts.
