CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good afternoon and welcome to Oxford Street for this afternoon’s testing fixture against high-flying Shirebrook Town.

As ever we extend a warm welcome to all connected with Shirebrook visiting today and hope officials, management and supporters enjoy their visit to Rossington tonight. Of course we welcome their players too, but hope they’re not enjoying themselves too much between 3pm and 4:50pm.

With the town’s ‘big club’ not in action today hopefully a few of those who usually spend their Saturday’s following the Rovers have decided to take in another of the local sides and ventured down here to Oxford Street. Any income for clubs like ours is vital so your £4 and £1.50 are hugely appreciated and will always go a long way to helping us provide a community club for the village.

So if you are visiting for the first time today please take a good look around, pop in the tea-room and make yourself at home. And should you be left with a free Saturday afternoon or Tuesday night again in the future do consider another trip down here to Oxford Street to support football in the borough rather than spending it watching the scores on your sofa. Rupert Murdoch doesn’t need your money. Clubs like ours do. So please continue to support oursleves, Askern, Armthorpe, Harworth, Thorne, Yorkshire Main, Bentley, Brodsworth et al as we give the town’s footballers an opportunity to take to the field.

2010 // NCEL DIVISION ONEROSSINGTON MAIN 0-0 GRIMSBY BOROUGH

Main extended their unbeaten run to three games as they continued a solid start to 2010 with a 0-0 draw against Grimsby Borough.

With a cold mist rolling across the Welfare fields the teams came out to a slight whitening of the Oxford street turf. Both sides enjoyed early spells of possession, with the opening opportunity falling to the visitors as Wright headed over from a fourth minute corner. It was panning out as an end to end fixture, but neither side was able to create a worthwhile chance, Graves in the visitors goal more than once out to deal with the ball into the box from Carl Hastie working well on the right.

Grimsby had a great opportunity to open the scoring half an hour in as Creer’s close range shot rattled off a post and then fell, via a Colliery defender, to Ireland. He too saw his shot blocked and then Newby’s attempted overhead kick from close range fell neatly into the welcome arms of Lee Appleby. Just before the break the home side threatened to sneak ahead as Andrew Culshaw volleyed goalwards from twelve yards but Graves was down well to save.

In the 2nd half it was The Colliery who looked the more determined of the two sides, enjoying longer spells of possession and limiting Grimsby to little or few chances. Just after the hour mark Jake Vernon had a chance to score from a Jason Stokes cross, but

he placed his near post header wide when he really should have done better. Culshaw was working tirelessly for the home side’s cause in a more advanced role, with William McGhie playing deeper. Stuart Rodgers and David Holvey were proving their normal defensive rock and let little past them all night, but the pair needed Appleby to keep the visitors out midway through the half as he saved well from Stephenson.

With just under twenty minutes remaining the home side forced a scramble in the Grimsby penalty area from which the ball rolled out to an unmarked Sean Pendleton, but his fierce drive from forty yards was turned round the post by Graves who must’ve seen it late. With twelve minutes to play Brad Billam replaced Jonathan Mirfin and his turn of pace down the left gave the visiting defence a little more to think of.

In the final ten minutes it was Grimsby who enjoyed more sustained periods of possession and looked the most likely to score. As the referee played out over six minutes of added time the match swung from end to end but neither side managed to convert late chances and both were forced to settle for a goalless draw. A point that neither side would have settled for at the start but one at the end they were probably grateful of.

TODAY’S VISITORS

Shirebrook Town Football Club formed in 1985 when the then very successful Sunday side decided it was time to try their hand at the more professional side of non-league football. Back then they were known as Shirebrook Colliery but, when the colliery closed in 1993, they changed their name to Shirebrook Town.

Warren Terrace was the venue for home games, but they soon realised that it was not suitable for the level of football they were hoping to attain. With this in mind, Langwith Road became the new home and, with some good local sponsorship, floodlights were erected. This was the first major phase of a program of ground improvements which continues to date.

Town have long held a policy of bringing the youth element through the ranks has always worked well. Even today most of the team are from Shirebrook and the surrounding villages.

There have been quite a few different records smashed in recent years. Stuart Greenwood, ex-first team manager, is the longest ever serving, having joined the club in August 1987 and resigning as manager in 2007. Martin Rowbottom is the most capped player, with 384 appearances. Notable leading goalscorers have included Gary Quincey, Stuart Greenwood, Brendan Yates, Nathan Booth and Lee Widdowson.

The record attendance at Langwith Road is 2,200 when Mansfield Town came to play as part of a deal that saw Gary Castledine move to the Stags in 1991, Steve Harris scoring the only goal of the game to ensure a Shirebrook win.

A WARM WELCOME TO SHIREBROOK TOWNThe club was promoted to the Central Midlands Supreme Division in 1991, having finished 5th in the Premier Division, before adopting the ‘Town’ name in 1993. They struggled in the first season and finished 14th out of 18 clubs but, after a number of seasons in mid and lower table, they were runners-up in 2000, going one better in 2001 and winning the championship.

Gound grading meant they were passed over for promotion to the NCEL that year, but they went one better and won the league in 2002, just to prove they were not downhearted by the rejection (beating Clipstone 12-0, to record their biggest ever win) and this time their application for a step up was accepted.

They finished in a promotion position in their first season in Division One of the NCEL but, once again, they club failed to satisfy the ground graders and were refused promotion to the Premier Division.

Heartened by the fact that they had been down this path before, they promptly set to and completed the improvements required, which in fact had been already underway but not completed, including a brand new dressing room which was opened by World Cup 1966 winner Ray Wilson in the evening after they had secured the Division One championship with victory at Lincoln Moorlands. The travelling support that day boosted the home crowd around 10-fold. This time there was no denying Shirebrook their place in the Premier Division, and they stepped up to finish 10th in the 2004/05 season.


SHIREBROOK TOWNAdam BURTON – Defender20-year-old who joined Town for one month at the end of January 2013 on dual registration from Evo-Stik First Division South side Rainworth Miners Welfare. Previous clubs include Nottingham Forest, Mansfield Town, Mickleover Sports and Ilkeston FC.

Brandon CARDWELL – Defender20-year-old who joined Town in mid-October 2012 from Sheffield FC. Cardwell came through the junior ranks at Sheffield Wednesday before having a spell with Leeds United’s academy side. He joined Buxton following his release from Elland Road before moving to Sheffield FC later that year.

Grant HEMSLEY – Defender23-year-old defender who joined Town mid-November 2012. A former Rotherham United apprentice, he re-joins manager Mark Shaw after playing for him previously at both Sheffield FC and Sutton Town AFC.

Rob LUDLAM – Defender20-year-old defender who joined Shirebrook from Staveley Miners Welfare in mid-September. Ludlam started his career as a youth scholar at Mansfield Town. After his release by the Stags he had spells at Hucknall, Goole and Belper Town.

Tom ROWBOTHAM - DefenderA former Sheffield Wednesday Academy player who joined Town in early October 2012, he is an 18-year-old defender who was previously with Stocksbridge Park Steels

The Langwith Road ground now had an overall capacity of 2000 of which 400 was under cover and a further 300 seated, and there was also wheelchair access provided, all helping confirm the club’s ambitions of gaining Northern Premier League status.

However, Shirebrook found it hard in the Premier Division, struggling each season afterwards to break out of the bottom half of the table, and they were eventually relegated to Division One after finishing second-bottom at the end of the 2009/10 season.

In their two full seasons back in Division One the club have seen a lot of comings and goings without much improvement on the field, finishing 13th in both campaigns, but they are currently flying this season and arrive at Oxford Street today second in the table and with an eye on a return to the NCEL Premier.

SHIREBROOK TOWN PEN PICSAdam BILLARD – Goalkeeper20-year-old who joined Town in early December 2012 from Parkgate. Billard came through the academy at Sheffield United before spells at Worksop Town, Sheffield FC, Frickley, Buxton and Parkgate.

Ben HALLAM – Goalkeeper21-year-old who joined Town in late September 2012 from Arnold Town. He began his career as a junior on Hull City’s books, before briefly joining Frickley Athletic. Has also played for North Ferriby United and Armthorpe Welfare.

Chris TIMONS – DefenderExperienced 37-year-old Shirebrook-born defender who joined during the close season after playing for Rainworth and Hucknall last season. Previous clubs in an impressive career include Mansfield Halifax, Chesterfield, Leyton Orient, Stafford Rangers, Gainsborough Trinity, Altrincham, Stalybridge Celtic, Ilkeston, Harrogate Town and Glapwell.

Jack BARNETT – Midfielder/Defender20-year-old signed from Hucknall Town in mid-September. A former Sheffield Wednesday player, who went on to gain a first year professional contract with the club, though he spent last season at Sheffield FC.

Sam ECKHARDT – Midfielder19-year-old who joined Town in late September from Parkgate. Previously with both Hallam and Sheffield FC.

Carlos FORBES – Midfielder25-year-old who joined Town in mid-October Parkgate. His previous clubs include Retford United and Sutton Town AFC.

Joel HOLLAND – Midfielder19-year-old who joined Town in mid-January following his release by Mansfield Town, where he successfully came through the youth ranks before being promoted to the senior side in June 2012. Has spent time on loan with Shepshed Dynamo and Eastwood Town.

Ellis WALL – Midfielder19-year-old who signed for Town this month from Sheffield FC, the side he joined in 2012 from the Chesterfield FC academy system.

Adam WALKER – Midfielder30-year-old who joined Town during THE close season. Started last season at Belper Town, before a spell with Worksop Parramore. Previous clubs include Glapwell, Ilkeston Town and Sutton Town.

Mitcham HUSBANDS - Striker18-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday apprentice who joined club in November.

Kyle JORDAN – Striker24-year-old who joined Town in mid-September, he began his career at Sheffield Wednesday. Spent a short time on loan with Sun Hei in Hong Kong, before his release by the Owls. Other clubs have included Worksop Town, Sutton Town AFC and Sheffield FC.

Jordan LEMON - Striker20-year-old who joined Town in early October from East Midlands Counties side Holbrook Sports.

Tom MULLEN – Striker20-year-old who joined Town in mid-September, Mullen is a former Nottingham Forest Academy player and Scotland U19 international.

Jake VERNON - Striker22-year-old who joined Town during the third week of the season after last season playing for East Midlands Counties champions Heanor Town.

Dan WILLIAMS – Striker25-year-old who joined Town in late September Sheffield FC. Williams came through the junior ranks at Wrexham and his previous clubs include Heanor Town.


CLUB & LEAGUE NEWS

Tuesday was far from a good night for the club both on the pitch and off it as after we had locked up and left following the 4-1 defeat to Hemsworth we then suffered a break-in at the Tea-Room and Club-House.

This is the third such forced entry we have suffered at the club in the past two months, and the most costly of the lot as the heathens who broke in managed to force their way into the store-room there and help themselves to much of our stock, including chocolate bars, beer and spirits.

Since we built the new clubhouse, through the hard graft of volunteers, it has been one of the club’s main sources of income and arguably the difference between stability for the club and following the many other non-league sides in this area who have fallen by the wayside in recent years.

There is a chance anyone stupid enough to steal from their own community is stupid enough to brag about it, so if you do hear more on the break-ins on the village grapevine please inform the club or authorities.

ANOTHER BREAK-IN AT OXFORD STREET

STAVELEY MANAGER FOX OFFLong-serving Staveley Miners Welfare manager Billy Fox has left the Inkersall Road club. Fox has been manager of the Premier Division side since September 2009, but has been forced to step down from his role due to work and business commitments.

Fox presided over a particularly successful period for the club, taking them up from Division One, lifting the Wilkinson Sword Trophy and of course reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase. All at the club have understandably wished him well.

TEVERSAL 5-0 ROSSINGTON MAINAnother disappointing afternoon on the road for the Main as late withdrawls from Nathan Cook (illness), Dave Holvey and Liam Copley (both family related) meant a depleted squad of just twelve players made the trip south to Teversal; a factor which would eventually prove telling.

The heavy pitch caused both sides issues, but it was the home side who eventually settled to take control of proceedings. Goal scoring opportunities were rare though and it took until the 9th minute before the first telling effort, which went the way of the home side. Dave Cockerill came up against Brad Billam before back-heeling to Will Harcourt to unleash a powerful effort that forced Jordan Wildey into a quality full length dive to his left to save.

Rossington did manage some forays forward with Billam being the main architect down the left flank, but they came up against a resolute Teversal defence that would work hard throughout the afternoon to record their third clean sheet on the bounce.

The home side took the lead on 32 minutes when Greg Tobin’s well weighted pass put Kye Pilmore through on goal and the Teversal marksman left Wildey with no

chance as he tucked home the opener. Main managed to create a few opportunities of their own as we sought to get back into the game, the best chance coming on 38 minutes when Teversal looked like breaking from a corner. But Billam broke up the move and hit a delightful cross field ball to Nathan Fraser who did superb to control the ball and cut to unleash a fierce effort that unfortunately hit Brandon Fallon before the home side scrambled the ball clear.

With five minutes remaining of the first period Teversal doubled their advantage following a neat passing move started by Jamie Goodacre who found Pilmore who in turn fed Rob Orton who cleverly ran at the heart of the Rossington defence before playing a return ball to Pilmore for him to calmly pass the ball past the stranded Wildey for 2-0.

Main did manage to carve out another opportunity before the break when Billam again did superb down the left flank before crossing to Fallon who simply could not get a shot away due to the defensive numbers crowding out the strikers effort.

...Teversal left flank combining with Eli Mitchell to make space for a driven low cross that found Harcourt who was denied by an excellent save by Wildey. However the forward reacted quickest to the rebound and managed to lay the ball to the unmarked Dave Cockerill who tapped the ball into the empty goal to make it 3-0 on 69 minutes.

It wasn’t until, the final six minutes, as Teversal brought on fresh legs, that the home side were able to cement the victory with a final flourish. Dave Cockerill went close as he played a short corner with Tobin and then cut in to fire a low effort that Wildey saved well at the foot of his near post. However the resulting corner lead to the 4th goal, when Dave Cockerill this time sent the ball to the far post where Goodacre eas on hand to volley home with five minutes still to play.

With two minutes to go late substitute Robbie Collins came on to have a decisive hand in the fifth and final goal. Collins ran at goal only to be denied by Wildey, but from the ricochet Collins was able to pick out Mitchell who fired home on his last appearance for the home side.

A bad day at the office, and one which meant that Main have shipped ten goals to Teversal across the two meetings this season, having been undone by the dismissal of Lee Appleby in the home game back in August. The relief is that is the last we’ll see of Teversal ‘til next year.

Sadly Main were without the services of John Tunney and Jonno Mirfin, both ruled out due to injury, plus Liam Copley and Chris Hanson through work, but David Holvey and Nathan Cook returned to the centre of defence whilst Adam Wisdom started up front. On paper this looks like another heavy defeat for the Main but we must remember that we have a lot of inexperienced players at this level at present even though there were occasions in this game when we were the better side. Our inability to convert our chances and lack of concentration when out of possession is continuing to cost us at the moment.

We got off to a good start and could have taken the lead in the first 25 minutes but two excellent saves by the visiting keeper denied both Scott Spencer and Nathan Doyle, then young Brandon Fallon placed his shot inches wide when in one-on-one, Nathan and Fraser’s shot did beat the Hemsworth custodian but struck the foot of the post.

At the other end young Jordan Wildey had produced a good block early on but then was not troubled until the visitors took the lead on 30 minutes when an inswinging free-kick was glanced home. Hemsworth’s second goal was a fast break

following a corner at the other end and we went into the interval 2-0 down. We started brightly again in the second half but in our eagerness to get forward we were again leaving ourselves exposed at the back and Hemsworth began to take control. They went two further goals ahead when strikes from the edge of the box beat Wildey in the home goal low down to his left.

Whether our visitors took their foot off the pedal, or we eventually saw the gravity of our situation, but to the lads credit we played some good stuff late on in the game. There was more movement, our passing was crisper and shorter and we were rewarded when a decent cross (at last) was headed home at the back post by substitute Scott Maughan in the dying minutes. There is no doubt that we have some very difficult games ahead and only hard work and a solid team effort (and a change in fortune in front of goal) will improve our situation.

IN RESERVE

The 2nd team suffered their first Cup defeat of the season against Div.1 high-fliers Hemsworth M.W. in an entertaining encounter at Oxford Street, the pitch just drying out following a midweek flood when a stand-pipe was broken. The 1st half belonged very much to the home side and they led 2-0 following errors in the Hemsworth defence, the first the result of an own goal and then Coburn chipped into an empty net from 25 yards as keeper and defender collided on the edge of the 18 yard box. A change in fortunes appeared a possibility when the visitors pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time.

The real turning point came 5 minutes after the interval when keeper Lodge was dismissed for verbal abuse to the linesman who had clearly missed an offside decision in the lead-up to Hemsworth’s equalising goal. Reduced to 10 men we were always going to struggle against a determined Hemsworth MW side

who were now in very confident mood and looked far sharper in attack. Stand-in keeper Coburn had no chance with an excellent 3rd goal by the visitors and as we pushed forward in search of some consolation, we were often left exposed at the back and Hemsworth scored 2 late goals to clinch a victory which had looked very unlikely after 40 minutes of play. The sending-off incident had proved a significant factor in this Cup tie.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS

CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDENO. 10. ALAN GREEN

I don’t subscribe to Sky Sports. I never have and never will. They’re responsible for changing the game beyond all recognition, and don’t deserve to have their hype pandered to when it comes to ‘Super Sunday’ (Its Aston Villa v West Ham lads), or ‘the Best League in the World’ (give it a rest fellas, Mike Pollet is in goal for Wigan).

So having boycotted Rupert Murdoch’s hyperbole fuelled empire what football I take in on a Sunday tea-time is done via the radio. But even then I never take in a full game. I can’t do it. Instead my Sunday football consists of minutes 1-23 and 45-68 of whoever happens to be playing, and the reason for this is two words; Alan Green.

BBC Five Live like to use two match commentators for a live game, alternating each quarter, so I take in what I can and listen to the each half get underway from the mouth of the reasoned and knowledgable Mike Ingham and then as he slides the microphone along the commentary box to Alan Green I switch-off and find something less harrowing or irritating to do instead, like poking myself in the eyes or listening to my Now That’s What I Call Nails Dragged Down a Blackboard album.

Green is paid to do a simple job; describe for those at home what is happening. From my flat I can’t see the turf at White Hart Lane or Goodison Park, and so if I am listening on radio I need to be kept informed of what’s happening. That’s all I ask for. It is all I want. Green however, seems to see his twenty-three minutes stints as an opportunity to put the world to rights, give tired gags a seventh or eighth airing, whinge about the handsomely paid very enviable job he has to do, and for the most part leave you guessing what it is that’s actually happening.

The most I’ve ever gleaned from an Alan Green commentary is that people at football like to stand up when they get excited. Green has been commentating forthirty years, and he is yet to grasp this fact. And so each and every game you will listen on as he complains about the way these people who have forked out a daft amount of cash to support their team have the temerity to stand in Green’s eyeline between a pitch he rarely seems to be paying any attention to anyway. Part of me hopes those supporters are doing it out of spite, I know I would. And I’d be wearing a grenadiers bearskin as I did so too.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

Q1. When was your debut for Rossington Main & who was it against?A1. I was 15 when I made my reserves debut at Mexbrough. My first team game came when I was 16 (August 2005) in the FA Cup, at home against Washington Nissan where we lost 2-1. Richard Sennett was in charge, he saw me training with the Over 35 team and asked me if I would be interested in playing in the FA Cup…and I jumped at the chance, of course! Q2. First footballing memory?A2. My first training session with my junior side at 9 years old.

Q3. First team you played for?A3. Rossington Juniors FC, loved every minute of it!

Q4. Which team do you support?A4. Although I’m not a die hard, I do follow Sunderland. I’ve never really had a club, just a general football fan I suppose.

Q5. Which footballer was your boyhood hero?A5. Zinedine Zidane. I loved watching him play, the man was a genius.

Q6. Who do you consider the greatest player in your position? A6. I would have to say Gary Neville. A very good right back and a fantastic attitude, the man was a winner!

Q7. What was the first professional game you ever went to watch?A7. I went to watch Sheffield Wednesday play Man United at Hillsbrough, I think it was 1995, about 7 years old.

Q8. If you could travel in time to attend any match ever which would you choose?A8. It would have to be the 1966 World Cup Final! The biggest game in English football history!

Q9. What is your favourite ever football kit? A9. My brother had an away Newcastle shirt. It was purple and dark blue hoops with a cream round neck collar! Cream shorts and blue and purple hooped sock. Very smart.

Q10. What make of boots do you prefer to wear?A10. I have always been an adidas predator fan, until the most recent version! I’m hoping they go back to their earlier versions next time around.

Q11. Favourite ground you have ever played at (apart from Oxford Street obviously)?A11. I played at Glandford Park when I was at Scunthorpe as an under 16, had a nightmare. My favourite NCEL ground would be Winterton, I like the surface there.

Q13. What is your most prized footballing possession?A13. I have the match programme from the last game to be played at the Old Wembley! It was a fantastic occasion, despite the result

Q14. What is your proudest achievement in football so far?A14. Serving as the Main’s Assistant Manager last season alongside my Dad. We had the most successful season in the Main’s NCEL history. I would love to go back into the coaching and management side of the game when my playing time comes to an end… again.

Q15. Sum what Rossington Main means to you in 5 words or less. A15. Proud to be a Blue

Q15. What has been your favorite moment whilst with Rossington Main? A15. Watching the lads reach the Wilkinson Sword Trophy final after an amazing game at Louth. I wasn’t involved because of injury but was there watching. A brilliant night.

Q17. Who is the best player you have ever played alongside?A17. Tough question….I am going to have to say my brother Matt. I have played with some very good players, but I am very proud of his achievements.

Q18. Who is the best player you have ever played against? A18. An ageing Chris Waddle once sat me on my backside without even touching the ball. He was playing for Staveley. He barely moved but he was class! He ran the game from the left wing, I struggled big time! I was about 17 years old, great education! Q19. Lastly, which other players would make up your dream 5-a-side team?A19. Moore, Pele, Maradona, Zidane (don’t need a keeper with that side!)

MEET THE MAIN MENShaun PendletonShaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions.

John TunneyJohn joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield.

Marcel ChipamungaYoung local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn.

Ben ClarkYoung and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders.

Niall DoyleAs the Reserve team captain Niall has become an important part of the club, helping the Reserves to a close title race last season. Niall likes to keep the ball moving and push forward into goal scoring positions whenever possible.

Nathan FraserAnother very versatile player who is naturally gifted, Nathan loves to attack and run at players and his creativity could prove important . Nathan’s ability to play out wide, down the middle, up front and even at the back makes him a key squad member.

Jonathan MirfinMain’s 2011/12 Supporters’ Player of the Year. Jonathan continues to impress at the Main with consistent displays in the centre of

midfield. Jonathan rarely gives the ball away, starting attacks and creating chances for his team mates. The controlled midfielder is also useful from free-kicks.

Danny TaylorDanny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well.

Brandon FallonBrandon burst into the Main squad in March. Tall, powerful and very quick and for such a young lad he fits in very well at this level. After only seven appearances last season, we are waiting to see even more of Brandon this year.

Tom McLaughlinPace, dribbling and finishing are just three attributes that make Tom a very dangerous opponent for defenders. He can play up front or on either wing. Tom joins after several seasons with Askern Villa and will be looking to cement a starting role at the Main this term.

Scott MaughanThe club’s overall top scorer last season.as he make his return to football after some time away from the game. It proved very successful as he fired the Reserves into a title chasing spot. Scott is a natural finisher who comes alive around the penalty area.

Dean ThorntonA former regular scorer for the Reserves, Dean has returned to force his way into the 1st team. Dean is excellent with his back to goal and good in the air, but equally as effective running past the back four. A natural finisher and confident in front of goal.

Adam WisdomAdam is blessed with pace and power and his physical attributes and appetite to work make him a handful for opponents. A threat running beyond defenders, but really comes alive from close range, where he scored all of his goals last season.


STARTING ELEVENTHIS ISSUE’S XI... FASCINATING FLOODLIGHT FACTS

1. The World’s first floodlit football match took place at Bramall Lane in October 1878. The match was between two sides chosen by local clubs and the Sheffield Football Association. The electric power was generated by two portable engines, one behind each goal; and the lamps, one in each corner of the ground, were on wooden towers 30ft high. They were of 8,000 candle-power, and a crowd estimated at nearly 20,000 saw the Association team win 2-0.

2. In 1878 Scotland held its first floodlit match as Third Lanark and Vale of Leven met at the former’s Cathkin Park ground.

3. In 1879 Wales got in on the act as the country saw its first floodlit game in December 1879 as Rhyl played the Grosvenor Club at The Green Field, Rhyl.

4. The legendary Herbert Chapman had floodlights installed at Highbury in the 1930s, but the Football Association refused to sanction their use for matches.

5. The first competitive match to be held under floodlights came in 1930 when Ollerton Forest met Welbeck Athletic in the North Notts Senior Cup Final at Mansfield’s Field Mill ground.

6. The first football club to install permanent floodlights were Southampton who had them installed at The Dell in 1950.

7. Though Southampton had played several exhibition games under the lights, the first official floodlit match in the UK was not until 1951 when Southampton’s reserves hosted Tottenham in the Football Combination.

8. In March 1953 Grosvenor Park in Belfast held the first British league game played under floodlights as Distillery hosted Coleraine.

9. The first international fixture involving one of the home nations to be played under floodlights was in November 1955 as England defeated Spain 4-1 at Wembley.

10. The first Football League game to be played under floodlights came in February 1956 as Portsmouth hosted Newcastle under lights at Fratton Park.

11. And lastly, a little closer to home, the central floodlight on the Main Stand side here at Oxford Street formerly shone on the Football League having previously been installed at Doncaster’s old Belle Vue ground.
