CLUB HISTORYRossington Main FC had been thought to have been formed in 1926. However, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when a club baring the name Rossington Colliery first played a fixture on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, making it to the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round in their first season at their new home. The club lost out to Lincoln City in a replay played on what is now the Welfare Cricket field in order to allow for greater spectator numbers. Unfortunately no official record of the game, or what is most likely to be a club record attendance, exists.

The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991 the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club were unable to match the expectations of the Central

Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Oxford Street for today’s match against the team currently topping NCEL Division One; Athersley Recreation.

This is, to my knowledge, the first time that the two clubs have met in a competitive fixture and everyone at Rossington Main extends a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Athersley on their club’s inaugural trip to Oxford Street.

Athersley are a well run community club, with a commendable junior set-up that, as you’ll see from their pen pics on pages 11 and 12, has produced much of their current 1st team. Given that at Rossington we too look to exist as a community centred club, perhaps Athersley’s current lofty league position can be taken as an encouraging indication that this approach to local football can bring rewards.

Thank you to all who picked up a copy of the new-look Main Issue at the

Askern game a fortnight ago. As that was my first bash at putting together a matchday programme it was nice to get some positive feedback, and hopefully today’s offering will have matched my debut as editor. And whilst I’m dishing out thanks, much are also due to my predecessor Pete Murden and my dad, Ian Wilson, for help in ensuring the appearance data is now up to date and accurate and, in the case of the latter, for the match report of the Askern game.

That home match against our Doncastrian neighbours proved to be a frustrating afternoon here at Oxford Street, as a very winnable game wielded just a single point. And sadly last week’s trip to Hallam proved even less fruitful with a 2-1 defeat. It will be a tough test to get something from today’s game, but, in what appears to be quite an open Division 1 this season, not impossible.

Enjoy the Game. Up the Main!Glen Wilson

ON THIS DAY

2007 // NCEL DIVISION ONEROSSINGTON MAIN 1-3 RAINWORTH MW

Still looking for their first league win of the season in this their tenth outing Rossington looked like they might finally put the W column in danger when they took a surprise second half lead against promotion chasing Rainworth.

Jason Stokes goal, ten minutes after the restart was soon cancelled out though by Danny Naylor for the visitors, and further goals from Lee Wilkinson and Jason Nicholson ensured another loss for the crowd of 85 to trudge home from.

The club don’t seem to have seen much action on this date in recent years, so we have to go all the way back to 1998 for their previous outing as Main made the short hop to Church Street for a local derby in the President’s Cup. This was the first season following the merger of Rossington Main and Rossington FC, and though the club was experiencing mixed fortunes in the league they had made it through to the FA Vase

1st round, and a tie with Goole that loomed large four days after this fixture.

As it was Rossington gave a decent account of themselves against their Premier Division neighbours, losing out by just the odd goal in five. Armthorpe went on to reach the semi final of the competition where they lost at home to North Ferriby United.

Twenty-two years ago today, a pre-merger Rossington FC hosted Rolls Royce on the Welfare in the Central Midlands Premier Division. Current Main manager Steve Lodge was in goal for Rossington as the visitors ran in three first half goals; things improved after the break for Rossington as Rolls Royce only managed to notch a single second half goal to wrap up a 4-0 win in front of a crowd of 92.

A quirk of the Central Midlands League fixture list that day meant

that whilst Rossington and Rolls Royce’s respective 1st teams met on the Welfare, their 2nd teams also faced each other at Rolls Royce’s ground in Hucknall. The Rossington reserves sadly didn’t fair much better than the 1st team though losing 4-2, with Darren Mountford and Pete Muir on the scoresheet. Also in the Rossington 2nd team that day were the current Main 2nd team management duo of Keith Bell and Paul Colley, the former at centre-half, the latter as an unused sub.

TODAY’S VISITORS

Athersley Recreation Football Club was formed in 1979, originally as Athersley North Juniors, and in the years that have followed have quickly become Barnsley’s most successful ever amateur football team.

The club is based at Sheerien Park on the Athersley North estate, two miles to the north-east of Barnsley. The ground lies adjacent to Athersley Memorial Park - dedicated to the memory of the 58 lives lost in South Yorkshire’s worst mining disaster in modern times, Wharncliffe Woodmoor, which devastated this close-knit community. Now the only recognised sports facility in the area (following the closure of Athersley Recreation Centre, from which the club took it’s

A WARM WELCOME TO ATHERSLEY RECREATIONname), the club is a vital part of the community.

The 60-year lease of the ground was bought by ex-Athersley Rec player Geoff Horsfield (who went on to represent Fulham, West Brom, Birmingham City and Sheffield United amongst others) and this has paved the way for extensive development of the club and the area he was raised in. Along with the tireless work of club founder/ secretary/manager Pete Goodlad and his dedicated team of local volunteers, the foundations have now been laid for future generations to enjoy these excellent facilities, the like of which has never been available to people of all ages and abilities from this area of South Yorkshire.

MAIN ISSUE // Official Matchday Magazine of Rossington Main FC 11

On the pitch, the success the Rec has enjoyed is unrivalled in local football. Countless league titles and cup wins have become commonplace, none more so than winning the Sheffield Junior Cup an unprecedented three years in a row (winning it 5 years out of 7, the other two years being runners-up!). Last season saw a clean sweep of honours achieved with a quadruple as well as the reserves winning their league at County Senior level showing plenty of strength in depth. To date, the record attendance has been over 500 to see the Rec play local rivals Wombwell Main - on a day when every other game in Barnsley was cancelled due to bad weather, this was testament to the hard work and skill of the groundsmen at Sheerien Park. With floodlighting now in place and Charter Standard status awarded, the future looks bright as the club enters into its first season at NCEL level. Plans are in the pipeline for further redevelopment, including a new clubhouse on site and new car parking facilities.

The club prides itself on its standing in the community and working together with local people, many of whom have given up a lot of their time and effort towards the bettering of the club - and with this bond so strong will endeavour to go on to bigger and better things in the future.

LEAGUE NEWS

Rossington’s next opponents Parkgate have a new man at the helm, with Russell Eagle taking over as manager. Eagle has managed The Steelmen several times before, initially taking charge at Parkgate a decade ago.

Eagle replaces Doug Shelley who resigned a fortnight ago following a 3-1 defeat to Barton Town Old Boys.

Our next visitors to Oxford Street, Bottesford Town, have received a welcome cash boost, as they unveiled a new Stand sponsor recently.

The Main Stand at our fellow NCEL Division One side’s Birch Park will now carry the name of local garage Rainton of Ashby. Feel free to add your own ‘motoring up the table’ type pun here.

MAIN IN ACTION

Despite conceding four goals in the midweek defeat at Pontefract, Manager Steve Lodge kept faith with the same back four but introduced Shaun Pendleton in a 3 man midfield in the hope that he would see more football than he did on his midweek trip to Warsaw. Askern Villa showed little sign of a player shortage after a glut of midweek signings and in fact had a stronger bench than ourselves. The visitors started the game much the stronger and moved the ball well, with their young tricky wingers causing problems for both Richard Spears and Brad Billam, and their right full back overlapping to good effect. Keeper Lee Appleby was forced into a couple of saves low down at his posts and another good opening was wasted as the visitors’ full back fired over. It took almost 20 minutes for the home side to get to grips with the game and a good move down the right saw Fraser place his shot wide of the far post when well-placed. The midfield and defence were now beginning to dominate and further efforts from Pendleton, Jonathan Mirfin, Dean Thornton and Nathan Fraser failed to test the visiting keeper sufficiently, but the chances were being created and Appleby was a virtual spectator. With a goal looking extremely likely, it was rather unfortunate that it came at the other end of the field two minutes before the interval. Main failed to close

down on the Askern left and the in-swinging cross was met by ex-Main player Mel Cotton, who had got between our two central defenders to glance a header past the stranded Appleby.

Rossington came out for the second half adopting a more familiar 4-4-2 system with Danny Taylor pushing on down the right, and Fraser and Thornton forming a more central strike force. It took a while again for the home side to get on top, with passes going astray and the forward pass often over-hit, but just before the hour mark we were awarded a penalty when Thornton was bundled over in the box. Mirfin’s spot kick sent the keeper the wrong way but rebounded back into play off the crossbar. Moments later came the most controversial action of the game. In a scramble on the edge of the visitors’ box Thornton was man-handled back onto his feet (the Askern defender obviously feeling Thornton was feigning another possible penalty attempt) In the melee that ensued Thornton and the said defender exchanged pushes before several players joined in, the worst of whom was the Askern defender Gareth Dawson who appeared to want to fight everyone in the “scrum”. With the referee following play out to the wing the incident occurred in full view of the nearside linesman, standing immediately below Pete’s camera position. Following a lengthy

VITAL STATISTICS

discussion with his assistant, the referee showed Thornton a red, Dawson a yellow and the initial perpetrator got off scot-free.

Perhaps it was this injustice that sparked the home side and the crowd into life but the final quarter of the game was by far the most exciting, the Main being more determined and energetic a man down and our visitors sensing a possible victory in their recent troubles. The introduction of Marcel Chipamunga also excites the locals these days and with Spears and Taylor exchanging positions the game was suddenly end-to-end. Main fought hard for every ball and surged forward at every opportunity, often leaving themselves exposed at the back. Mirfin brought a good save out of visiting keeper Jamie Ward, and dragged another effort wide of the target. Chipamunga and Fraser combined well to carve an opening for the young substitute who saw his effort blocked by the advancing keeper and at the other end Appleby came out on top in a one-on-one with opposing

forward Gary Mundy. Eventually Fraser scored with a neat chip over the advancing keeper following a smart interchange with Chipamunga, who was proving a headache for the tall defenders. The game could well have been decided at either end in the final 10 minutes as neither side seemed satisfied with a point, with Billam surging forward on our left and Askern failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage on the counter-attack.

In the circumstances I suppose both sides would be happy with a point at the finish. Askern probably relieved that they had managed to raise a full complement and pleased that they had remained in contention with a vastly changed side, and Rossington, who with a below-par performance and a man down, actually deserved something from the game for their fighting spirit in the final 20 minutes when it looked like it could well have been “one of those days”. I.W.

The table on the right shows the difference between the 1st team’s league points tally across the opening 16 games of the current NCEL season (red) and the last (blue). After 16 games of the 2011-12 season Main had twice as many points as we currently have in 2012-13. The table also demonstrates what a difference losing key players can make to a club like ours.

MAIN IN ACTIONSAT 27TH OCTOBER // NCEL DIVISION ONE

HALLAM 2-1 ROSSINGTON MAINIt proved to be an underwhelming visit to the oldest football ground in the world for Main last Saturday. Rossington slunk to a 2-1 defeat to fellow strugglers Hallam in a scrappy game of few chances..

Going down Sandygate’s considerable slope in the first half Rossington had the game’s sight on goal, forcing Hallam ‘keeper Andy Coulson out to save quickly and bravely at the feet of Adam Wisdom. The Main number 9 was causing the home defence the most problems in the first half and it was his well-weighted through-ball that Ben Clark raced on to midway through the half, only for Coulson to get out quickly to save once again.

The majority of the first half though was being played out in Rossington’s third of the field, with Hallam capitalising on the visitors’ inability to get hold of the ball in midfield and keep the pressure on. Danny Booth came close to opening the scoring as he was played in behind the Main back-line, but his low shot struck the outside of the post. In the end Rossington had Lee Appleby to thank as they went into the break level, the keeper pulling off a brilliant point-blank save to deny Liam Morris unmarked at the far post when he looked certain to score.

At the start of the second half Rossington looked a much better side, finally starting to retain possession and cause their opponents a few

problems. Jonathan Mirfin had already seen an effort sail just over from a free-kick when another dead-ball, out on the right, brought the game’s opening goal. Niall Doyle’s fantastic inswinging delivery, glanced into the corner of the net by Wisdom to put Rossington 1-0 up on the hour mark.

Sadly for Main the lead wouldn’t last long as The Countrymen levelled things up inside two minutes. Hallam captain Ben Kistell leaving Appleby with no chance as he found the top corner with a superbly taken half volley to make it 1-1.

With the game in the balance Rossington had a chance to go back in front as Wisdom got onto a through-ball in the left channel and managed to skip past his man, but saw his shot blocked by the legs of the Hallam ‘keeper. It was to be a missed chance the visitors would rue as not long after Hallam went ahead. The Countrymen getting in behind Main on the left flank with the resultant square ball tapped in at the far post by Adam Carter.

Unfortunately Rossington’s early second half fluidity continued to evade them and they struggled to create any real threat to the home side in the final quarter of an hour. The victory was hard earned by the young Hallam side, who were the better of the two teams in a poor afternoon’s football.

IN RESERVE

A match in which Main struggled to get going as Hemsworth put them under pressure for the opening ten minutes. Forcing Rossington to chase the ball and defend the home side enjoyed several early chances, the best of which came as their striker attempted to lob Dan Lodge, but the Main keeper held on to his effort.

Against the run of play though it would be Main who took the lead; Dave McGee was felled as he entered the Hemsworth area and the referee pointed to the spot. Jonathan Cook slotted the penalty home for a lead which flattered Rossington. Within a couple of minutes the ball was on the spot again, this time for the home side as the assistant referee flagged for a penalty as Niall Doyle headed clear a back-post cross. The reason for the penalty remains unknown to us even now, but at least Lodge wasn’t unsettled by it, as he got down to his right to save the mystery spot-kick and preserve

Main’s lead at the break.

Rossington improved after the break and were enjoying greater possession in key areas. Despite this it would be the home side who found the net; Hemsworth midfielder Lowe allowed to carry the ball forward and bend his shot across Lodge and into the far corner. Back level Hemsworth were given the opportunity to go ahead as they were awarded the game’s third penalty; no doubt about this one though with Cook having brought down his man. Again Lodge was equal to the test saving down to his left, but Hemsworth’s Sidebottom was quickest to the rebound, tapping in for 2-1.

Rossington rallied late on in search of an equaliser; Doyle saw a volley brilliantly saved by the home keeper whilst Dean Griffiths fired over from close range. But despite the late push Hemsworth held on for a harsh defeat on Main.

The second half was quite even, but Bramley were proving canny, catching out Rossington with their offside trap on several occasions. The visitors had already had a goal disallowed, when they did eventually get the winner; a ball through putting Salt in one on one and he finished with the outside of his foot, to pinch it for the visitors.

After losing last week to Hemsworth, the Main needed to put things right at home against Bramley Sunnyside. Unfortunately though, they went down 2-1 to the title chasers.

This was the first game of the season in which Main had conceded first. The opener came from a tame shot that Dan Lodge should have dealt with; he didn’t, and Main were punished by Brunyee. Rossington pressed for an equaliser and it came when Dean Jones clipped a

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 2. APPLAUDING A PLAYER WHO’S SENT OFFBeing sent off is nothing to crow about. Though the autobiographies of Vinnie Jones, Billy Whitehurst or Chic Charnley may try and tell us differently there is no pride to be taken in receiving a red card. Sure, if you pick up enough of them you might, in Vinnie’s case, land a few major Hollywood roles, but who really wants that sort of glamour and riches, knowing it’s been earnt of the back of football dismissals? Premieres and parties fuelled by sly kicks and dissent ? Swimming pools and models and Jacuzzis and groupies and Jacuzzis and models... Sorry, lost my train of thought there, where was I?

Red cards, that was it. Now, for some reason it has become de rigeur in recent seasons to applaud off any miscreant who happens to be dismissed no matter how ludicrous their misdemeanour, just because they happen to be wearing your team’s colours. This should not be. There is only one exception to this. A single scenario. And that is when a player unselfishly takes one for the team late in a match, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity (without trying to cause harm), at the expense of only a free-kick to try and secure a result for his team. Think Ole Gunnar Solksjaer tripping Rob Lee at Old Trafford in 1998. Even here though it is not the red card being applauded, but the selfless act that led to the dismissal.

Actually, on second thoughts, I’ve just remembered Doncaster Rovers’ Barry Miller getting sent off for punching the ever irritating Jimmy Quinn at Northwich, which, whilst no-one condones violence on a football pitch, was certainly meriting approval of some kind. However, the point remains, players being sent off should not be congratulated. Just the other month I was amongst Wales fans who, rather than admonish James Collins after the lumping centre-half ’s stupidity had single-handedly scuppered another qualifying campaign, had the temerity to clap him from the field as if he’d just batted a solid 37 at Lords.

Why are you applauding these people? They’ve left you in the lurch; abandoned you short-handed in one game and ruled themselves out of helping you in future fixtures. Try placing the scenario in another context. You’re at work when one of your colleagues stands up, pulls out your office internet server, tucks it under his arm, and buggers off home for the rest of the day. I suspect your initial reaction wouldn’t be to clap him down the corridor. Or you’ve stopped off in the park with the kids on the way back from the shops when your wife decides to take the car to go and see her friends, leaving you two miles from home with two toddlers and a collection of shopping bags. Hearty round of applause as your Mondeo disappears down the High Street? Thought not.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

SPECTATOR NOTICEThe committee, officials and all volunteers involved at Rossington Main have worked hard in recent years to establish a positive reputation for the club in both the local community and the wider footballing fraternity. We are rightly proud that this club is appreciated as one which upholds the true values of grassroots community football, and that Oxford Street is seen as a welcoming and friendly ground to visit. We ask that you help us to maintain this reputation during your time with us at the ground, ensuring that all present have a positive experience, regardless of the match result, and leave more than happy to visit us at Oxford Street again. Football is, after all, a game to be enjoyed by players, spectators and officials alike. Rossington Main is a keen supporter of both the ‘Respect’ and ‘Kick It Out’ campaigns, as such foul, racial or obscene language will not be

tolerated within the ground. Please respect the right of all supporters, both home and away, to enjoy the game of football.

Please do not;- Ride bicycles in the ground- Smoke in the Main Stand or any club buildings- Stand in front of the seated areas- Allow dogs off their leads- Consume alcohol from glass containers at pitchside.- Enter the field of play before, during or after the game, other than at times necessitated for Health & Safety. All vehicles parked at Oxford Street are done so at the vehicle owner’s risk, though our shooting has improved in recent seasons. Thank you for supporting your local football team, and for purchasing this matchday programme.
