INDIRECT QUESTION: ILLNESSES

An indirect question is when a question is ‘inside’ another question.

Take a simple scenario: we stop someone in the street and ask: “Where is the supermarket?” This is what we call a direct question .

However, let’s say that we begin with Can you tell me? or Do you know? Our original question is now ‘inside’ the new question: Can you tell me where the supermarket is? 

You will see that the word order has now changed because technically the question is now Can you tell me? Not Where is? This is what we call an INDIRECT QUESTION .

Instructions: Read the following dialogue between a doctor and a patient, and rewrite the question to make them polite, then play the dialogue with one of your partners using the polite sentences.

D: DOCTORP: PATIENT

D: Hi, What’s your name?

P: Hi Doc. My name is Peter

D: Ok, so... Why are you here?

P: Well… you know, I have been feeling sick.

D: What makes you feel this?

P: I don’t know, I just feel like I can't breathe well.

D: How long has this been going on?

P: It started like three days ago, but I just thought it was because of the pool.

D: In the event of a real emergency, please dial 911.

P: I know that I can dial 911, but I just want to come to the doctor.

D: In that case, can you go to our Urgent Care facility on Sunset Blvd.?

P: My family can bring me to Urgent Care?

D: Sure, they can.
