New Children’s Sunday School this Fall Teacher and Assistant Orientation 8/21 10am Conference Room 2nd Floor of Education Bldg If you are signed up to be a teacher or interested in learning more about what we do in Sunday School, please join us. Even if you are planning to substitute or would like to be a helper in the room as opposed to leading the class, we need you! Our Sunday School classes have shown an increase in attendance with an influx of new families over the summer. It’s critical we have 2 adults in every classroom every Sunday. As with everything we do, we accommodate busy schedules. We just appreciate the extra help and with many volunteers, it is not a huge time commitment for any one person. The rewards are great, however, as you really get to know the children in our church as you all “Dig In” to God’s word every week. Help them go from KNOWING ABOUT Jesus to really KNOWING HIM and growing in relationship with him. We need you to make a difference in a child’s faith journey.

Wednesday Night Family Dinner

On August 24th, our Wednesday night dinners will resume weekly at 5:45 pm. Please know that our reservations start over completely, so you must let the

office know if you want a standing reservation again, or plan to contact us weekly. Full details about a new text alert system will be in the newsletter next week. We are excited to welcome Sharon Cooper as our new church hostess. Sharon will be coordinating delicious meals for us all to enjoy and welcomes those of you interested in helping to make this happen each week.

We thank Cyndy Tabakian for her 5 years of service as our church hostess and wish her well in her new endeavors.

The Chancel Choir

resumed regular Wednesday

practices on August 3. This is a great time to join! The

Chancel Choir is open to

anyone 16 or older. No

previous musical experience is

necessary. This choir leads the music at both

traditional Morning Worship services each Sunday, at 9 & 11 a.m. We rehearse each

Wednesday evening

from 7 to 8:30 in the Sanctuary.

We are saving a seat for YOU!

WAY STATION REQUESTS For the month of August, the WAY Station is requesting donations of Mac and Cheese. Please leave your donations in your Sunday school room or in the church office. Thank you!

What is Campmeeting? This is a Protestant tradition that grew from American frontier Christianity, beginning in the early 19th century. The movement of thousands of settlers into new territories meant there were few standing houses of worship, and even fewer ordained preachers. The "camp meeting" led by itinerant

preachers was an innovative response to this situation. News of the upcoming meeting was spread by word of mouth, and people would come from a wide area. Due to primitive transportation and little or no accommodations, attendees would camp close to the meeting site, hence the name. As participants were freed from the rigors of daily routine, the meetings featured almost continuous preaching and singing for several days. The camp meeting movement fostered a new tradition of music and hymn singing; hymns were often made up on the spot in response to a sermon or prayer. Although not strictly true campmeeting songs, similar music arose in this same time period that is closely related to (and often mistakenly attributed to) campmeeting; examples include Civil War era popular songs, revival songs, and Southern Gospel. Although the campmeeting tradition waned in the early 20th century as areas were settled and permanent churches were founded, the tradition survives today in many areas of the country through seasonal revival celebrations, and the rich repertoire of music remains and continues in worship today. During the month of August, we will pay homage to this musical tradition in our 9am and 11am traditional worship services through the use of hymn medleys, choir anthems, and other special music.

Newcomers Class On August 21st and 28th, we will have a newcomer’s class with Pastor Martin upstairs in our education building. It’s a chance to familiarize yourself with our church and programming and ask questions. If you have been visiting lately and would like to know more, please stop in or let the church office know. Even if only one of those dates works, we’d love to have you!

Leadership Role for Children in Worship- 4th Grade and Up Acolyte Training

6:15 pm on August 24th Our first opportunity for new Acolytes to help will be on August 24th in our Sanctuary. This opportunity is for those entering 4th grade and older. Even Acolytes who have al-ready been doing so, will get a special emphasis on Communion as there are extra duties those Sundays. We appreciate veteran Acolytes pairing up with a new Acolyte to mentor them and help feel comfortable. What is an Acolyte? An Acolyte is important role in worship as someone who lights candles and assists in the duties of Communion, or The Lord’s Supper. We ask that Acolytes be in 1st grade or older with 4th graders adding in the communion responsibilities on the 1st Sunday of every month. Bible Bearers are a way for our Kindergarteners to start assisting in worship by carrying in God’s Word to the altar table and back out again. Anyone Kindergarten and older can be a Bible Bearer. Interested in Being a New Acolyte? We are working to assess a good time for another training to bring on some new Acolytes and Bible Bearers. Acolytes must be at least in the first grade and Bible Bearers must be at least Kindergarteners. If interested in your child taking on some very important duties in our morning worship, please contact Erica Amason, our Acolyte Coordinator at [email protected].

New Administrative Assistant Donna Tussey

Please stop by the church office and welcome

Donna.
