Living In an Age of Distractions Ellsworth Kalas’ recent book “Preaching an Age of Distractions” described well the life all of us experience. Life is filled with distractions, many of which are of our own choosing. His premise is that living in this age we must learn to live with distractions, but carefully. A few weeks ago I received and reviewed an email document on the state of the United Methodist Church. It disturbed me and I feared it would become a distraction to others who received it. The author’s concerns and conclusion were based on stances of the United Methodist Church on a variety of controversial subjects. Those are found in the Book of Resolutions, which he called a foundational document of the United Methodist Church. The foundational documents of United Methodists are three books. They were present in the saddlebag of every circuit-riding preacher in Wesley’s era and in the possession of every pastor today. They are in order of importance: the Bible, the Book of Discipline, and the Hymnal. As important as these are, Jesus Christ is the true north for our spiritual and intellectual compass. A question we should use to test the many voices that solicit our attention daily: “Will this distraction lead to more life or to less? Will it bless me so that I will bless others or will it diminish me so that I will enjoy diminishing others? Does the thought to which I’m giving attention in my life reading, listening, or thinking lead to the fullness of life or to a smallness and a corrupting of life?” (Kalas).

Living In an Age of Distractions

Ellsworth Kalas’ recent book “Preaching an Age of Distractions” described well the life all of us experience.

Save the Date! Youth Yard Sale - March 12th

You may start bringing items for the yard sale on March 10th. If you have any larger items you would like to donate, we can pick them up. Call the church office with any questions.

Appalachia Service Project (ASP)

The mission trip will be to the Appalachian mountain area of Virginia, July 10-16, with an organization called Appalachia Service Project www.asphome.org. There are openings for 2 teams. Each team is typically 5-6 people (5-6 adults or 2 adults and 4 youth). Anyone 14 and older is eligible. Youth must be accompanied by an adult guardian. The team will spend 5 days repairing a home for a family in need. Various projects include roof repair, dry wall, painting, flooring repair, and installing ground drainage . You do not need construction skills. The staff at ASP will provide most of the tools and supplies and will guide us through the repairs. This is a great way to give back to those in need!

The deposit of $50/person is due March 1 and there is a $95 fee to register the group. Cost is $325/person plus travel.

Hope to see you at the meeting February 21 at noon in the Curry. If you cannot make the meeting but are interested, please let Tim know asap. Thank you! [email protected]

Thank You!

As in the past, members of our church came through for The Wesley Community Center Love

Walk this past Saturday. A special thanks to Joe and Donna Hoke for their part in making this happen. This year we had 14 walkers and raised over $600. Thanks to all who were involved and know that each dollar raised is helping women and children have a little better life.

Invitation to Romans - 8 week Disciple Bible Study

Led by Jim Stephens, 6:30pm on Wednesdays beginning March 2nd in the Guest Room

Invitation to Romans is a short term Disciple study that has an introductory session followed by 8 weekly gatherings to explore and

discuss the week's readings and study. Sessions will last 60-90 minutes and require whole group and small group discussion that depend on completing six daily reading and reflection lessons before the group meeting each week. Two short video segments present narrated elements of key scripture and a look at the impact of Romans across the centuries. This is a facilitated discussion study. It is not a lecture series. Please contact the church office to reserve a book if interested in attending.

Acolyte Training

There will be acolyte training on Wednesday, February 24th at 5:45pm in the

Sanctuary. Anyone who has a first grader or older that is interested in helping lead worship by lighting our

candles is invited to attend.

Children’s Sunday

The time has come for our 6th Annual Children’s Sunday Service. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children of our church to take a leadership role in our worship service. We invite all the children of the church to participate, not just those in JAM or Joyful Jamboree. There is no children’s church on February 28th at 9:00am as we hope all children participate in the 11 am worship time.

We have been practicing in Joyful Jamboree and JAM, but also will catch other kids up in our 2 practices at 10 am on February 21st and 28th during the Sunday School hour.

All children will sit in the choir loft and lead the music. Hand motion videos are available to help your children learn at home. Just visit our website at www.rhumc.com. Click on the YouTube Icon on the home screen. Older children will lead prayers and readings. They will also act as our ushers.

We have a video skit put on by the 3rd Grade JAM class, which introduces the sermon, “Counting on God”. The JAM Elementary Choir will sing some songs featured at the Children’s Choir Festival, and we will also enjoy the Children’s Chime Choir. Thank you for supporting our children on this Sunday. Prepare to be blessed!

Prayer Ministry

Prayer requests may be submitted through the Prayer Ministry page on Richmond Hill United Methodist Church website, by placing prayer request cards located on pews in the offering plate, or by contacting Julie Seckinger or the church office. Prayer requests are sent to all prayer ministry team members via their preferred contact method: email, text, or phone call.

Please consider joining this ministry. Whether you have seconds or hours to devote and regardless of your age, your prayers can powerfully impact individual lives, this church, and our community.

“Don’t be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
