Growing Curriculum Together (K-‐3) -‐ Saira Devji, Vancouver “Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the river.” Loris Malaguzzi Have you ever wondered how to “grow” projects organically with children? During this workshop, you will have opportunity to learn how teachers can listen to children and grow projects through “active, reciprocal exchange.” Participants will also have a chance to generate conversations about how to begin project-‐based learning in their classrooms.

Using Technology to Document Primary Science Experiences (K-‐3) -‐ Janice Novakowski, Richmond Photographs and video tell rich stories about the science learning that occurs in primary classrooms. We will discuss ways to document student learning in inquiry and process-‐based science experiences. Examples of Reggio-‐inspired documentation panels, Animoto video compilations, photobooks and iTechnology apps will be shared. An overview of the new science curriculum framework will be provided with suggestions for integrating competency-‐based experiences.

Come explore simple ways to inspire beautiful art using your favourite picture books. Take away creative ideas to foster an appreciation of art and reading in your classroom!

From Story to Masterpiece (K-‐3) -‐ Julie Paris, Vancouver Teach your class about art and artists through stories. Read a book, look at art, and create a masterpiece. Come and see how to inspire your students to create in the style of Van Gogh, Picasso, O'Keefe, and Warhol. Create your own artwork masterpieces!

The Wonder of Tiny Terrariums (K-‐3) -‐ Janice Lam and Wanda Yee, Vancouver Come and create your own terrarium. This hands-‐on workshop combines language, art, science, ecology, and sustainability. Using realia, students can learn about various plants that thrive in different conditions, and how to care for living things. Take home a beautiful, handcrafted terrarium to share with your students and family.

Teaching to the Big Ideas in Mathematics (K-‐3) -‐ Jennifer Barker, Richmond Have you reviewed the new curriculum draft for Mathematics and wondered how you will design lessons that will assist your students in understanding the big ideas? If so, then this session is for you! Jen will share several mathematically rich tasks and corresponding assessment, which you will be able to use to engage your students in the wonder of Mathematics while bringing the essential understandings to the forefront.

Adrienne’s new book Nonfiction Writing Power is HERE! Come to this session as she introduces the key concepts from her new book. She will explain the different forms of nonfiction outlined in the book, including description, instruction and persuasion. She will model several lessons and share many student samples. As always, Adrienne will highlight anchor books which support the lessons.

In this school session, Adrienne will share what she loves most – NEW BOOKS! Come to this session and learn about all the amazing new anchor books recently released and get ideas on how to integrate them into your classroom. Titles will include picture books, nonfiction and a few beginning chapter books.

Connecting Comprehension and Technology (K-‐3) -‐ Joanne Carlton, Vancouver Based on “The Primary Comprehension ToolKit” by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, learn to use a variety of apps to enrich our instruction in a variety of meaningful ways. We will look at ways to extend your use of iMovie, Puppet Pals, Comic Life and Book Creator. Bring your own ipad or you can use one that will be provided.

“I Can Write” – Writing Poetry with Young Children (K-‐3) -‐ Wanda Salewski, Richmond Children naturally play with words and language. They connect oral to written language through playful experiences. In the classroom, as children are provided with opportunities to explore words and the sounds of language, they become confident writers of poetry. Come and learn how to create a personal collection of poetry with each of your students.
