Chris August Award
On Wednesday the 10th of October Philip Spowart received the prestigious Lions
District 20IV6 "Chris August Memorial Award" for outstanding service to the local
community. Phil is the treasure of Pyramid Hill Lions & long term Lions member, he is
always there to lend a hand & is our number one hamburger flattener at any Lions BBQ.
Norm Walkington & Bill Quinn presented Phil with the award. Somehow Robyn
Spowart & their kids kept the secret from Phil that he would be getting the award, great
work guys!
Chris August was born in Poland on the 27th of December 1911, & as a young kid
migrated to Canada with his parents. He then migrated to Australia in 1947 to assist
setting up the Bruck Mill in Wangaratta. In 1955, on a business trip to Sydney, Chris
met a Lions member & became interested the Lions Organization. On his return to
Wangaratta he got together with a few friends & business colleges to discuss the
possibility of starting a Lions Club in Wangaratta.
A formation meeting was held in November 1955, & the districts first Lions Club was
charted on the 17th of March 1956, with Chris August as the inaugural President. Later
on Clubs were chartered in Albury, Benalla, Shepparton, Beechworth, Euroa & Chil-
tern.
Chris regularly visited other clubs & was well known & respected throughout the region
& will forever be remembered as the patriarch of Lions in the 201V6 district. He also
achieved a 42 year Perfect Attendance Award! Christopher John August passed away in
Wangaratta on the 8th of January 1999.
The Pyramid Hill Lions Club would like to congratulate & thank Phil for his
tireless work in & around the club & the community.

TERRICK TERRICK NATIONAL PARK WEEKEND
The Friends of the Terrick Terrick National Park weekend was held on the first week-
end of October & attracted more than 50 people to the park, many of whom camped at
the Davies old home site. The weekend included evening presentations on the Friday &
Saturday nights, mini-bus tours of the park, nature walks, static displays & a working
bee.
On Friday evening, presentations were given by Yvette Pauligk of Zoos Victoria
“Plains-wanderer captive breeding program” & Andrej Hohmann of DEWLP “Spotted
Owl conservation work in western USA” On the Saturday morning, 17 observers
attended a bird walk in a section of the Terricks forest. Bush birds observed in the
forest included Australian Ringneck, Brown Treecreeper,m Western Gerygone,
Southern Whiteface, Black Honeyeater, Black-chinned Honeyeater, RFed-capped
Robin & Hooded Robin.
A mini-bus tour to Riegel Rock followed the bird walk. After lunch there was a tour to
Pyramid Hill. A grassland walk with botanists followed. A Parks Victoria report was
presented prior to the group’s A.G.M. & included a video about surveys at Bael Bael
Nature Conservation Reserve. Castlemaine Steiner School teacher Lisa Hall then
reported on a visit to the park by a group of her students during which they studied the
park’s grasslands.
On the Saturday night, Dr David Baker-Gabb spoke of his study of the Plains-wanderer
over a period of 20 years. The Plains-wanderer is a very old species – unique insofar it
is the sole member of its genus & family. The female is larger than the male & has
more decorative plumage. She lays a clutch of eggs & like the female emu she departs
& leaves the male to hatch the eggs & bring up the chicks. Depending on the season,
she may find another mate & lay more eggs. Video clips of the Plains-wanderer doing
displays were screened by Yvette Pauligk of Zoos Victoria. The clips showed Plains-
wanderers jumping in the air & rotating their wings - fascinating displays. Apparently
the flood years did not suit the Plains-wanderer & numbers declined - however they are
building up again.
Boort ecologist and ex-farmer Paul Haw then gave a presentation about indigenous life
pre-European settlement. He showed some aboriginal tools and demonstrated how they
were used. This created much interest. On the Sunday morning, about 20 people went
on a park tour along Rogers Track. The group stopped to look at wildflowers, a group
of White-browed Babblers, an indigenous marker & an aboriginal scar tree.

A Step Back In Time With The Historical Society
PHA. January 27 1932
The Air Pageant which is to be held at Pyramid Hill on Saturday 27th February, is
arousing great interest and should prove one of the outstanding events of the year. An
additional interest is provided by fact that this is the first event of its kind held in Northern
Victoria and from reports available should prove a great success. The event is being
inaugurated in conjunction with the local Church of England and the building fund will
share in the proceeds while portion will be devoted to the formation of an aero club and
the establishment of Pyramid Hill as an airport:
The programme includes an Aerial Derby of 40 miles for the Northern District
Championship Cup, an open handicap club for trained piolets and balloon straffing, tin
hare bombing, parachute jumping, aerobatics, formation flying, crazy flying and sky
riding. Full details of this Pageant of thrills will be announced in subsequent issues.
February 17 1932. Air Pageant
Great interest is being stimulated in this big event on Saturday, 5th March, and it is
anticipated that the event will be a great success. The programme provides plenty of
interest and the whole event generally is unique, being the first of its kind held in Northern
Victoria. There will be a large number of 'planes participating and these include a huge
passenger machine from Melbourne as well as representatives from various aero clubs
throughout the State. It will indeed be a great spectacle, not to mention the innumerable
thrills. Fortunately Pyramid Hill is ideally situated for such events and the fine flying field
available through the generosity of Mr J H. Ryan, has been highly praised by visiting
airman. It is hoped to continue the pageant each year and lead to the establishment of an
airport as the development of aviation in northern Victoria proceeds
February 24 1932
Details for this forthcoming event are well in hand and indications are that it will be very
successful. A large number of planes will take part. Tickets are now on sale and are
numbered for the purpose of drawing the numbers which entitle the holder to a free ride.
The draw will take place at the pageant. One third of the proceeds is to be devoted to the
establishment of an aero club and drome at Pyramid Hill and to-night, Wednesday, a
public meeting is called to appoint trustees to receive funds. A Committee meeting will be
held at 7.30, and the public meeting at 8.3O. All interested are invited to attend.

A Note From Joan
A funny thing happened at THE FORUM today. Years ago we used
to play a game called King For a Day. It gave you the right to make
new rules & regulations i.e. “Every year there will only be two
holidays from Work /School” (everyone groaned), then the KFAD
would add “of 6 months each” (everyone cheered). But I want to
have a genuine discussion, so I will jump in feet first with a couple
of my favourite thoughts that should be prominent in our
democracy.
FIRST & very timely “Lest we Forget” Forget What? That we had
heroes? Won some battles? Had full employment while we were
creating instruments of destruction? NOOOOO. THE STUPIDI-
TY OF SOMEONE TRYING TO RUN THE WORLD BY
FORCE. And at what cost? Australia was a young country & lost
most of its young men to death & destruction in WW1 & WW2.
Those not killed or physically injured carried mental scars to their
graves. Every family in Australia suffered the loss of at least one
family member & the mothers cried that they had lost so many of
their sons.
LEST WE FORGET : THE SHEER STUPIDITY OF WAR. AND THE
SACRIFICE THAT HAS TO BE MADE BY EVERYONE.
Imagine what the world would be like now if the money that was
spent on munitions & the energy of those young people whose
lives were lost or damaged by war all over the world had been spent
creating infrastructure to ensure everyone had access to clean water,
a decent roof over their heads & education. AND lived in peace
with one another so that they could build up their family’s
resources, instead of having their homes blown up & needing to
start from scratch every few years. Mother Nature can provide us
with enough challenges, destruction & terror without humanity
adding to it. Australians will never glorify war.
Cheers until next time Joan.

Goldfields Libraries Update by Russell Easton
Can’t find what you’re looking for in the library? The Goldfields library catalogue has around 300,000 items (not all of them are at Pyramid Hill!) You can browse it online from the comfort of your own home, and then reserve items to be delivered to the library at Pyramid Hill for you to collect. Visit our website at www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au. Click on ‘Catalogue’ and use the search box to search the catalogue. To reserve an item, click on the check box next to the item (you can reserve more than one item), and then click on ‘Reserve Selections’. You will then be prompted to enter your borrower ID and password (borrower ID is the long number under the barcode on your library card, and your password is usually your year of birth). On the next screen, ensure the pickup location is set to Pyramid Hill, and click ‘Place Reservation’. As always, you can come and see me on a Tuesday between
11:30 and 12:30 at the library, where I can help you with any
queries you may have!

Be Fire Ready
Bushfires and grassfires pose a significant threat to
all those living, working or travelling in Victoria.
Preparation and planning can save you and your
family from being killed by fire.
CFA, as always, will do everything possible to
protect lives and property. But there is only so
much that can be done. There will never be enough
firefighters, fire trucks and firefighting aircraft to
have these resources at everyone’s back door
during a large bushfire. The responsibility for
surviving the fire season is shared between
emergency services and the community.
You have a role in ensuring our community’s
safety. That’s why CFA has developed and updated
the Fire Ready Kit. It is an important resource. It
will help you plan for survival, beginning with the
basics of preparing before the fire season, through
to planning what to do if fire is in your area and
you cannot leave.
There is a section on ‘What you need to do to stay
informed’, including where to find warnings and
updates, and the actions you need to take when fire
is in your area. Above all, the Kit provides a
step-by-step guide to leaving early, from preparing
your leave early plan before the fire season, to
acting on it on a high-risk day. The decision about
when to leave may be the most important decision
you make during the fire season, quite literally,
your life and the safety of your family may depend
on your decision. You are not alone in your
preparations. Advice and support are available with
details provided throughout the Kit. Draw on these
resources to make this fire season a safe one.
For more information on keeping safe this fire
season download the Fire Ready Kit at:

Regional Achievement Awards Finalist
I’d like to congratulate Yarrawalla’s Kia-Ora Piggery on becoming a finalist in the Victorian Regional Achieve-ment & Community Awards in the diversity & inclusion category.
Kia-Ora Piggery diversified its workforce by employing skilled Filipino workers. It continues to expand their business, now employing 24 Filipinos, accounting for 50 per cent of their total workforce. The company was also featured in a New York Times article in May this year, which focused on the success of the town’s multicultural population.
The winners of Victorian Regional Achievement & Community Awards will be announced at the awards presentation on the 26th of October.

Pyramid Hill Lawn Bowling Club News
60 & Over
A very gallant effort by our 60+ players this week who returned from their trip to Boort full of news & excitement. The ‘awesome
foursome’ was reduced to a ‘dynamic duo’ who were subsequently bolstered by the inclusion of a couple of Boort gents, Ian &
Kevin. The strategy very nearly paid off as they came oh, so close to achieving the much coveted three game win. Ray, Allan &
their playing pals were within a bee’s sneeze of grabbing the dead chook. They were as close as two coats of paint. They won their
first two games & were right on track to pull off the big one. Sadly their last game was a tie, resulting in the requirement for an extra
end to be played, which they lost by one shot. Pipped at the post, they were. It was almost enough to make them pluck the feathers
from a duck!! So no chicken joke but a bit of mirth about his cousin the duck. A duck, a skunk & a deer went out for dinner at a
restaurant one night. When it came time to pay, the skunk didn't have a scent, the deer didn't have a buck, so they put the meal on
the duck's bill. Keep at it, guys; that dead chook would have been quacking in its boots. Perhaps the forth coming 60+ match to be
played on the 25th of October on our own turf will be the fruitful one- we can only hope.
Midweek Pennant
It was just as well that we had something to gloat about last week because this week was a totally different story with not a win
notched up anywhere at all. We’ll put it down to the Friday Factor. Division 1 played at Cohuna where the slick greens & strong
gusting winds tested us beyond our limits. Marie S. Nola, Marie N. & Graham were the most successful combination engaging in a
tight encounter until the 20th end, but then their failure to score on the last five ends brought them undone resulting in an eight shot
loss (14-22). Kate, Jan, Ray & Bill struggled to make a start but, after refuelling at the lunch break, they scrambled to also get within
eight shots of their opponents (13-21). They missed the incentive award due to their lower score. Glenys, Marg, Jeanette & Tony
lost 18-30 which brought the overall result to a disappointing close at 45-73.
Division 2 hosted Cohuna Golf & had an interesting but unsuccessful match which was a bit of a come down from their efforts of
the previous week. Just a few little organisational hiccups to be ironed out to ensure a smoother & more focussed platform. Robyn,
Lorraine F, Allan & George lost 10-33, while Lorraine D., Rose, Glen & Joe lost 19 – 29. Let’s hope that the return to proper
Mid-week bowling gets us back into kilter this week. Division 1 will match up against Kerang at home, while Division 2 will play
Kerang White as an away match. No wind would be a blessing!
Saturday Pennant
We knew it was going to be a challenging day but nevertheless we fronted up for battle to tackle our formidable foes from Leitch-
ville and Cohuna Golf. Division 1 faced off against Leitchville, the tipster’s Premiership pick, knowing full well that the going
would be tough. And tough it was - although we rose to the challenge & gave the opposition a bit of a run for their money. Lionel
lead his ladies (Kate, Jean & oops, sorry Ray) to an exciting drawn game – 22 shots a piece. It was a close encounter all day. Fred,
Marie N., Jan & Bill couldn’t quite get their act together & did not gel as they did the previous week with the resultant score, 17-30,
a bit disappointing. Beau, Marie S., Nola & Graham got caught on the starter’s blocks & took quite a few ends to flip over the
scoreboard before hitting their straps. Alas, the horse had bolted & they finished 14 shots in arrears (15- 29). The overall tally,
54-81, shows we are competitive but there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Division 3 put up a much better performance & were unlucky not to come home with the better result they aimed for. Lorraine D,
Wayne, Tony & George robbed the cookie jar with a 23-13 win & picked up the Incentive Award. Well done – a great effort! Robyn
capped off her birthday by leading her team (Jeanette, Deanne & Wayde) to an 18 shot tie. They started well but were slowly
pegged back as the day wore on but can take pride in their achievement. Charlie, Glenys, Joe & Rose had some good bowls but their
opponents managed to produce some even better ones & restrain them to a 13-28 total. The overall 54-59 left them 5 shots short of
the target. A fine effort that lost a bit of lustre on the record sheet. Next week both Divisions host our friends from Wakool. Please
check the team sheets for Duty Roster & catering. FOLLOWING THE DAY’S PLAY WE WILL BE PROVIDING A BBQ. Please
make an effort to spend a bit of time socializing with the Wakool folk.

Board Members please note the change of date for the next Board Meeting to Wednesday the 31st of October at 8:00pm.

played. The $10 entry fee includes afternoon tea. The Tournament is generously sponsored by M.G.R. Accountant, Golden Rivers
Real Estate & Miller’s Ag Supplies so some great prizes are there for the taking. A BBQ following the end of play will be available

day successful.

Lock It Up Or Cough It Up You don’t lock your car? This could be your lucky month!
Joy ISN’T handing out the $161 fines for not locking your car, but only in October.
Instead, you will be the lucky recipient of a reminder notice on your windscreen!
Thefts from cars are often due to valuables being left in plain sight or doors & windows being unlocked. Thefts can occur at any
time, so it’s important to not present an easy opportunity for offenders to commit offences. Police statistics indicate that the most
common property stolen from cars in Victoria include number plates, cash, wallet/purse, tools, digital devices including mobile
phones & handbags. In order to steal, thieves will smash a car window or break locks, and the cost of repairs may exceed the value
of the stolen items. It is important that you take the appropriate measures to improve your vehicle security.
Car insurance companies usually require that policy holders take reasonable steps to safeguard and protect their vehicle. This means
that if your car is stolen because you left it unlocked, your car insurance claim might be declined. Furthermore, the theft of personal
items will usually only be covered if they were taken from a locked vehicle.
When it comes to the security of your car, play it safe, and don’t let yourself become a victim of vehicle theft. Lock your car, place
valuables in the boot or take them with you, and remove the keys and keep them with you.
Follow these simple steps to help reduce the risk of thefts
Be vigilant & report any suspicious behaviour to police via 000 or if you have any other information about a crime call Crime
Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Crime prevention is a daily responsibility & your ongoing participation is the best way to ensure a safer
& more secure community.
For more crime prevention information & advice , please visit the Victoria Police website at www.police.vic.gov.au
Secure Your Vehicle
• Parking where you or others can see your car such as well lit areas, outside businesses or areas with high pedestrian traffic
• Park in a locked garage if possible
• Park off the street in your drive-
way if you don’t have a garage
• Park in a well-lit area, thieves do
not want to be caught breaking
into cars, so increase the risk that
others will detect them
• Install a car alarm
Lock Up
• Lock your car at all times
• Close all windows
• Turn on your car alarm
• Lock your car always physically
check it is locked, even when
parking at home or just leaving
your car for a moment
• Close all windows including sun-
roof
• Tradespeople lock external tool
boxes and equipment if they can’t
be removed
Remove All Valuables
• NEVER leave keys in the ignition
• Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight, lock them in the boot or take them with you
• Remove GPS units and wipe the
suction mark off the window
• Do not leave personal documents
such as your registration or driv-
ers licence in your car. These
items contain your home address
• Do not leave house keys or garage
door openers in your car – they
may be used in home burglaries
